Bob, I am doing the same job because I have water in my gear fluid. I plan to replace the seal on the shift shaft and replace my water pump while I have the lower unit off. But isn't there also oil seals around the drive shaft underneath the water pump? I'm thinking that it makes sense to replace those seals as well. What do you think?
I also plan on replacing the prop shaft oil seals and the O-rings on the lower casing cap.

When I called to have this job done and I mention the oil seals blow the driveshaft underneath the water pump and they said start with the shift shaft seal because there’s no need to mess with something that is not leaking because if you don’t get it perfect then you still have the same problem. I didn’t change it and my lower unit is just fine after the shift shaft seal and a new gaskets, I was going to change them like your thinking I’m already in here let’s do it but they told me not to so I didn’t, i’m gonna leave that up to you but I did not change them in my lower unit and is fine. Just make sure to line your shift shaft up correctly in neutral when you put it back together
      And thanks for stopping by.

Great idea with the lower unit mount. You can put the impeller on the shaft first then turn the drive shaft clockwise while pushing the impeller housing down. Saves having to line everything up.
I also just clip off that cable tie on the speedo tube and pop the hose of because those plastic fittings are a shocker.

Good old creamy lower unit fluid....Definitely the shift seal and since you're in there replace the pump and use a high performance lower unit oil.....Your freshwater unit looks a lot better than my saltwater unit!!

Good catch on that problem sir this video was informative definitely can't run that milk through your lower unit. I appreciate the video I'm trying to find one on the four and 6 hp Yamaha I have an issue we're not just the lower unit period but the actual housing that connects the top to the bottom has a little bit of Play It's not at the lower unit it's higher up where the black seal meets the pivot point I know it needs a little tightening just trying to figure out where to Titan that with my torque wrench

I'm waiting on this seal to be delivered and come across your channel. Good stuff! There's a break in this video around 13:35 that skips explaining how you got the seal out of the housing. Can you share your tips for getting this seal out without removing the housing?
    Thanks,
    Grge

    • @bobcrappies

Thanks for stopping by-that is a very good question. The seal is in there pretty good, I took a small drill bit smaller than a pencil lead- drilled very carefully to relieve the pressure and it popped right out I didn’t put that in the video because you have to be very careful not to go all the way threw the old shift shaft seal, I didn’t put it in the video because sometimes you can work them out By moving them back-and-forth and I didn’t want nobody to do more damage, Hopefully that makes sense and answered your question and I did have to remove the housing.

Appreciate the quick reply. A small hole to give me something to work with is the direction I was leaning; I'd seen someone on another forum mention it. Camp clean up trip on the river this weekend and a long camp trip for Memorial weekend, so I'm hoping this is an easy swap. If I think about it, I'll reply to my own comment and let any viewers how it went.
      Thanks,
      Greg

Sounds good and good luck with your project, if the shift shaft seal is not too tight you can work it out but if you do decide to put a little hole in it to have something to work with just barely barely go through the top let us know how it goes

Great video Bob! I really loved it. I have a 2011 Suzuki 60Hp and which is leaking oil from the water intake. The only things I have changed so far in this outboard are the fuel filter, oil filter (every year), and the lower unit lub oil. I think it is time to change the water pump and the shift shaft seal as I was told this could be the problem. Do you think my outboard has the same procedure of replacing these parts as per yamaha one shown in this video? Thanks!

Bob, I followed your video and all work out fine. I bolted the lower to the motor and with the control box in neutral the prop won't spin. tried numerous times clocking the shift shaft trying to find neutral with no sucess. Do you know the correct way to index the shift shaft? Thanks Mark...

    • @bobcrappies

I had that same problem because after I got done it would only go in reverse and took a pair of vise grips with a rag on it and slowly turned the shift shaft to neutral and I could feel when it dropped in neutral And then I was fine, Hope that helps

Hi, thanks for sharing this, do you know what determines the vertical position of the shift shaft? Is the bottom of the shaft resting on the o-ring under the splines, or is it the bracket that's fixed in the bottom cowling? Many thanks !
