I watch a guy on UA-cam called Self Suffient Me. He does year round gardening videos in raised beds, a bunch of different fruit trees, all sorts of dehydrating his produce, etc. He is in New Zealand, but so much of that he deals with can be adjusted to what you do in Arizona. Everyone can use the tips and gardening tricks. I hope you don't mind me suggesting another YT Channel.

Love the raised garden beds. I bet Ashley doesn’t get much sleep cuz she is always thinking of cool things to do around the homestead and I bet Jonathan doesn’t get much sleep cuz Ashley is always thinking of cool things to do around the homestead 😂. Your family is one “Go-getting machine”. Ocho has the cutest personality. He reminds me of a toddler always trying to get moms attention while she is trying to talk to others ❤. Always enjoy and look forward to your videos. Thanks for sharing ❤️❤️❤️❤️

You should plant some Bougainville and Red bird of paradise somewhere around your place. I had some when I lived in Tucson. Really loved them and the color in my yard.

I LOVE those beds! And they look so great in a tidy row. When we lived in the desert in California, our beds were the same height but made of wood, and were very productive using hugelkultur, BUT we found we also needed a covering of a couple inches of wood chip mulch (Back to Eden style) to hold in the water at the root level or else our kale turned into kale chips and died due to the arid hot desert sun. We used the Dig watering system with timers on all our raised beds and it worked so well. An old timer there told us to crack an egg into each hole the peppers and tomato starts to go into, and it fertilized them beautifully. We sprinkled in some azomite and worm castings into the good soil on the top, and those beds were always crawling with earthworms when we dug down. Happy Planting!

Mulch is also important in Minnesota! Helps retain water throughout the summer, and it keeps the weeds down. In winter, it helps prevent heaving. This is when the ground freezes and then thaws. As this cycle keeps happening, the plants are pushed up out of the ground. The roots dry out, and the plant dies. Mulch prevents that!
I am very excited to see what things you learn from gardening in the high 🏜 desert area. Be sure to ask your neighbors what has worked for them and equally important, what has not and why! More life lessons! Get messy! Make mistakes! Fix 'em!💞🐑🦌🏜P.S. You are the best medicine that I could take right now. I can eat crackers today!

You can already start spinach, radishes, spring onions, mangold and lettuce. Seeds germinated in warmth , wait for second leaves and then plant out with a frost cover. You’ll be eating by early spring. Love how productive and excited you are! Great video!

I use raised beds and what I have learned is that you should plan your plants based on your sun rise, hottest time of the day and tallest plants to either shade during that time of the day to protect early morning sun loving plants. Also trellis planting is wonderful for space saving but if you can have the structure leaning away from the other plants. You could however contract a trellis over tender plants like lettuce using poles at the end of the bed and volleyball net stretched across the middle.

I also use sheer curtain panels for shade. Knowing how the sun moves across where the beds are will with what plants you grow in which. Peas, cucumbers and melons do great on a trellis. I did use old t-shirts to sling the melons on the trellis. Good luck.

Use cardboard as a weed barrier on top, or as a delay to keep water in the bed a bit longer. As a weed barrier, soak it, and hide it under mulch.

Just remember the word “hugelkultur”. Put simply, hugelkultur is a centuries-old, traditional way of building a garden bed from rotten logs and plant debris. These mound shapes are created by marking out an area for a raised bed, clearing the land, and then heaping up woody material (that's ideally already partially rotted) topped with compost and soil. And it works amazing in raised gardens.

You built those beds pretty much like we did ours. We only did one layer of cardboard, then half full with whatever brown organic we could find (the dead fall from a park behind our house helped), then local dirt, and top soil for the top 6 in. Still need to put some more top soil each year, but it is good and rich now (after a few years).

think it's gonna be easier there in southeastern ARIZONA to grown loofas rather than a lot of the areas around Tennessee & western North Carolina & Northwestern South Carolina where so many YT homesteaders are altho I wish them much success. It will be another competition to see who has loofa success this year. you all use biochar too in beds??? you could consider charging it in barrels in water u have collected, with goat gold mixed & sitting for a weeks or so, what do ya think? your videos are fun to watch because you're all so industrious & especially so cutely entertaining good folk! so much has been done in these past 2 years. Ocho is so funny ,and helpful too lol!.. you could do with starting a composting bin so next year you will benefit from some beautiful rich nutritious soil that you have made yourself. We used to have two ,one to start whilst we were emptying the other. We added it to our heavy soil each year and it gave us lovely plants that did really well too,as well as pride,we did it ourselves. We put all sorts in,egg shells, peelings ,table scraps, not bones, ripped up paper and card ,layered so it broke down quicker, grass cuttings, clippings from trees smaller ones as they composted quicker as well as leaves etc, from the garden. The soil from it grew beautiful tomatoes and cucumbers!beans, greens etc and flowers were bigger and and stronger too.We also used it when adding trees and shrubs.I loved my gardening.I don’t do it anymore due to disabilities and am in a flat now.I love these tubs they look really strung and very robust ,they also look really nice too.Love n Light to you all 🥰

For climbing veggies: climbing beans - make sure the tag states "pole bean", otherwise you'll have a bush type (Kentucky Wonder Gold pole, Italian Pole, Yellow Wax), peas, loofah gourd, squash (except Amabssador or bush type zucchini. This variety climbs: Costata Romanesco and it's pretty too!), scarlet runner bean (it's flowers are sure pretty but pick the beans when they are no longer than 2.5 to 3 in - longer they are the tougher they are), cucumbers (Long English, National Pickling), climbing nasturtium (the leaves have a peppery taste and are great in salads-so are the flowers, and you can pickle the seeds like capers), Malabar Spinach - pick the leaves when they are young, melons (cantaloupe or honeydew or dwarf pumpkins), tomatoes (indeterminate works best - cherry varieties like Sweet 100, Sweet Million and Yellow pear. For larger tomatoes - Early Girl Bush, Burgess or Greenhouse type), tomatillo, Rocoto Pepper (spicy bell pepper). There are endless possibilities and the fun part is try crossing one flower's pollen with another to see if you can create a new variety for next year... this can be a school project and teaches perseverance and patience. Read the labels of each seed packet carefully and a word of advice - plant water needing types together. Also try companion planting like beans with potatoes - they keep bugs off of each other. Hopefully your hens and rooster won't come pecking..... Have fun!!!

If you take the cattle panel and put it on the outside of the two oval beds and put a T post in to hold them your plants that are climbers can climb on the cattle panel as they’re growing in the winter time, you cover it with six mil plastic, and you have a greenhouse and you can grow all year round. That’s what we do.

Love those raised bed. Wish they had been around when I was gardening. I firmly believe that gardening in raised beds is awesome. Looking forward to seeing you plant them. Hang in there, warm gardening weather is coming soon! Lining the beds with the cardboard and adding discarded limbs and shrubs is a smart move. I had several inches of mulch on top of my raised beds which made them virtually weed less and very easy to manage as well as helping regulate the soil temperature, suppressing weeds, and conserving moisture. Through in a drip irrigation system to make it even less work. As the mulch degrades, it enriches your soil. and mulch

sandy soil is great for growing root veg like potatoes, parsnips and carrots in, also if you do grow potatoes, you could grow tomatoes alongisde them so you can get twice as much out of the same bed. some treated 2x4 and 4x4 inch mesh wire makes the easiest reusable "trellis" for growing vined vegetables

You can also mix in ashes from firepit and ground up eggshells to help fill it. They have excellent nutrients for gardens.

The hog panels are a good idea, they'll allow you to hang some shade cloth over your beds.. I have a feeling you'll need it for part of your growing season. Best of luck! Love your videos, my son lives nearby you in Safford, AZ... I'm in TN

Those are so cool & I hope you add the cattle panel trellises, because I’d really love to see how they work for tomatoes. Those tomato cages you can buy are so flimsy. Also, I just love your new green shirt, Ashley, from, what was that company??? Lots of love from Oregon! ♥️ Jessica

My gardening has always consisted of layering (aka: Lasagne Bedding/Gardening). It always began with at least 6” of dry cardboard as a weed/grass barrier ( metal staples & adhesive tapes removed). It is eco friendly because it is biodegradable. The layers consisted of fresh ground bark mulch/ saw mill shavings, newspaper/shredded paper, Bokashi vegetation, tree limbs, fresh cut grasses, compost soil and wood ash…. Not in this order. If I could attach photos to the comment section I’d share a couple of small harvests. Your family will greatly benefit from non-processed REAL fresh food. Your commercially sourced foods costs may even diminish.
I grew an array of herbs, spices, fruits & veggies, popcorn. I canned and froze (FOOD SAVER System and dehydrator) the bounty. The cabinets were stocked with soups, preserves, sauces, fruits, veggies. The freezer had ground herbs ice cube form, pie fruits, cakes, muffins & pastries, peppers, sauces and the list goes on. While I enjoyed all of the process ( still do but on smaller scale) The hard part is not in the prepping. It’s in the harvest. Waste not want not.
Am sending warmest vibes of learning and successes (as always) to you all in your self-reliant endeavors. Peace, and harmony to you all. 💫🍇🥖🧇🍅🍆🧈🍿🍪🥚🧀🍓🫑🌶🥒🥬🥦🐓🐐🐇🐝🦬😃

Regarding the trellises: if you were to hoop them over the bed structures, it would also create shade needed during more hit temperature seasons. You under/ companion plants such as radishes, carrots, beets would greatly benefit as well as a second round planting from seed or starts.

cut grass makes for a great ground cover to hold in the moisture and warmth as it breaks down and feeds your plants . cold frames are a great way to get your plants started a bit earlier . any old windows will work (reduce reuse recycle rethink). love the content .

You guys did a great job! Mark at Self sufficient Me has a couple videos on how to fix bowing on those types of raised beds, that comes from the compost settling over time on the cross braces. He fixed his without removing all the soil. They looked good as new after, and it didn't take long.
