  • Direct-to-Film (DTF) vs. Screen Printing | What's the Difference?
    What’s your best option?
If you need to print 10,000 1 color designs for a big brand, there’s nothing better than screen printing. But if you’re NOT, then there’s a good case to make high volume DTF Printing your technology of choice.
To see a full demo on how the Direct-to-Film printing process works, watch this video: • How It Works | Printin...
Here are the biggest advantages of Direct-to-Film Printing:
    - Print hundreds of transfers per hour
    - Very soft hand
    - Surprisingly stretchable! Okay for your most demanding fabrics
    - Pennies per print. It makes short runs very realistic.
    - Washes like screen print transfers and feels even BETTER over time.
    - :15 second press time - TOTAL
    - No set up time
    - No set up costs
    - Less real estate needed
The more we compare high volume DTF to other technologies the more see that a combination of products is best for MOST busy shops.
One of our favorite machine combinations is the DTF-24H2 with the DTG G4.
A DTG printer is great for when shops did to do a simple one off or want to quickly print a shirt and don't want to set up the full DTF printer.
You can learn the differences between these two printing technologies in this video: • Direct to Film and Dir...
Screen printing is one of the oldest ways to decorate t-shirts. People who screen print describe it as more of an art work. Screens are developed with digital negative films and a special ink is squeegeed onto the shirt. Then they are sent through a tunnel dryer.
The DTF-24H2 is ColDesi's newest 2 head DTF printer that automatically, prints, adds adhesive powder, warms, and rolls up your transfers for you. It can bust out hundreds of prints in minutes.

digital printing has its own segment of the market just as there is for silkscreen printing. It was not mentioned in this video the pros and cons for both, just comparison of the amount of work that needs to be done.. but is it practical to use dtf to print a single design to a thousand shirts? which is more practical, economical, and faster? its still screen printing.. the hard labor of preparing the screen is only done upfront before printing, but it is still faster and economical to use this traditional process when you are printing large numbers of shirts. of course, you don't use this printing process to print 10-50 pieces of shirts, that's not the market for screen printing. That is where digital printing can be more efficient in time, labor, and cost.. so the real difference is the market segment to which a t-shirt printer provide service. That determines what is more suitable printing system or equipment to use.

Who says DTF can't easily produce 1,000 shirts? FYI a typical DTF printer can print 1,000 designs in a couple days.

@@joemarz2264 There's only one way to find out. My buddy has a screen printing shop and would love to challenge this gentleman to a print-off for 300 tees with a two-color print. (Quick note: He also has a DTF printer.) DTF is a fantastic solution for small numbers but not giant numbers. Also, preparing the screens is not as bad/timely as he makes it out to be. I would undoubtedly be on your side if I didn't see it with my own eyes.

Great question - you probably would not do just one - but you CAN put as many "just one's" as you want in one run. So if you had 25 different design/shirt orders you can gang them in the software and run them. For one offs we would pare this printer with one of our DigitalHeat FX white toner machines or a DTG G4

My problem with DTG & DTF is the quality. It doesn't have a soft nice feeling to it like Screen Printing. DTF is also merely a sticker on a shirt I don't like it tbh. But all & all thank you for the good and concise review.

@@joemarz2264that could be for a variety of reasons. Maybe it was printed with a low mesh count and alot more ink was deposited. The type of ink can effect the feel as well. Its also possible that the print was not cured properly

@sollysuliman2357 i’m not too savvy on how the whole DTF process works, however, I am aware that DTF and heat transfer vinyl or two different things as well as sublimation, maybe it’s possible that you have received heat transfer vinyl print instead of DTF because vinyl prints usually have that thick sticker feel to it on the T-shirt.

I’m not too savvy on how the whole DTF process works, but it’s possible that you’re thinking about vinyl transfers, because those usually have a thick layer on top of the shirt and it feels like a sticker and a peel off after sometime. DTF heat transfer vinyl and sublimation all require heat and pressure from press to be applied onto a shirt however they are all different in terms of the technology used to get the print design onto a film

Unfortunately brief statements about which is harder doesn't tell the entire story. We have many large volume users who would say that they are very happy to not be screen printing anymore, that it was much more work. However, in some cases screen printing could be a better solution. For anyone who isnt sure, it would be great to get into a deep conversation with one of our pros at coldesi.com. That would clear up misconceptions.
