  • This is a long interview with Frank Zappa from October 26, 1981.
    This interview only aired once as far as I know and ironically, Zappa was playing his last concerts at "The Palladium" in New York City.
    Covered in this interview is Frank's negative experiences with the stage hands unions.
    One of the reasons Frank never played the Palladium after November 1, 1981 was due to excessive stage hand union costs associated with doing concerts at that venue.
    The first thing I noted while editing this video is how relaxed Frank is and how good Sandi Freeman was at asking Frank open ended questions and then allowing Frank to answer. For such a long interview it has few commercial breaks.
    This is a 5 part interview.
    I am sorry for the poor video quality. But even "back in the day" when I was heavily into trading video NOBODY had a better quality copy of this interview.
    NOBODY.
    For a long time I thought this interview was lost in my tape vault, fortunately, I found it.
    Enjoy this little piece of FZ interview history.

    There's an ancient Japanese proverb that says "The nail that sticks up gets hammered down" It's always risky to swim against the current. That's why so few people actually do it.

    This is an amazing interview. I wish Frank had lived long enough to become more involved in federal politics as an elected official.

    Thank you for posting such a concise, common sense insight. It shows the clarity of thought that's so desperately needed today. I bet Frank would give you a hat's off on this one. I live for comments like yours, well said.

    None of his employees had a gun to their head to be in his band, and when one of them left, he went on his merry way, to be replaced by one of many others trying their damnedest to make the cut. This fact speaks for itself. It's called free enterprise.

    Very well spoken guy. I'm in agreement with him on a lot except taxing churches. Taxes are the Devil and should be abolished across the board. The only thing worse than taxes is people who like to pay them. I mean think about that.If I hear somebody say "I like to pay taxes," I'm running in the opposite direction because clearly they're insane.

    I think it's healthy to be reasonably cynical about our "leaders". It's necessary for survival because those clowns DO NOT have any of our best interests in mind. Carlin & Zappa forever!

    @silentthriller I'm not sure anybody likes paying taxes, but there's no currently a way around it. Until the government can find another way to fund the things it wants to do we will be stuck with taxes. The only thing we can do until then is devise a smart logical way to do the taxing.

    Nah, he was human, after all, and made mistakes. Case in point would be his digitally re-recording the drum and bass tracks on We're Only In It For The Money & Cruising With Ruben And The Jets (esp. the latter, what was he thinking?) Also, I'm in semi-agreement w/ the original Mothers' lawsuit claims for royalties which should have occurred upon CD re-release of the older albums. In general though, he was very fair to those he did business with, & therefore had no lack of applicants.

    Well, he did do business that way at first, which became impossible, in part leading to the dissolution of the MOI in 1969. One must grasp the reality of investment in rehersal costs, promotion, legalities, all of which must be budgeted for before you even see a dime of profit. Nonetheless, he had no shortage of talented applicants willing to subject themselves to the rigors & benefits of working for him. To argue that they were all suckers & chumps for doing so begs for facts not in evidence.

    I'm surprised he recommends taxing churches after he spent his entire career protesting censorship. He suggesting punishing institutions he doesn't like by confiscating wealth via threat of force by the state. And he's wrong on budget issues for schools. There has always been more than enough money to cover books, pools, libraries, parks, music programs etc...Its the public school union (totally illegal) that pay themselves with salaries and unrealistic benefits before one dime ever reaches the intended use.

    • @RSR423
      @RSR423 5 років тому +1

      What a total asshole you are. Taxing churches isn't censorship, you idiot. Even if churches were taxed, they'd still be able to spew their lies and hate speech just the same. You really do have the correct title of "headless soldier" because, obviously from your foolish comment, your brain was in the missing head. Maybe you were once a soldier, which would explain a lot.

    • @andrewharper1609
      @andrewharper1609 4 роки тому

      Taxation isn't censorship. Everything else is taxed so why not the churches? Freedom of speech is supposed to come with the responsibility of making sure that what you state is accurate and the churches promulgate a point of view of the world that is woefully inaccurate. Despite having a commandment not to bear false witness. And they try to interfere other people's right to free expression.
      I don't know about the US school system so I can't comment on that side of it.

    With all due respect, what is the evidence that he was "very fair" to his sidemen? Most musicians expect "per diem", a daily amount to operate on, and he didn't pay it, even firing Sal Marquez when he asked for it.Many musicians wanted to be in the band for the cachet.

  • @leetomboulian
    @leetomboulian 12 років тому

    He put his musicians up in cheap hotels while he stayed in luxury hotels, and never paid per diem. That's not necessarily treating your employees well.

  • @leetomboulian
    @leetomboulian 11 років тому

    According to Barry Miles's bio, he said to Sal Marquez, "I never have done that [paid per diem] and I'm not doing it now." Or words to that effect. There were also nine band members on the MOI payroll, and he was writing more abstract music for that band than he wrote for later Mothers. Anyway, I agree that musicians worldwide wanted to work with him regardless, myself included!

  • @leetomboulian
    @leetomboulian 11 років тому

    It's just not good for morale to stay in better places than your band. It's one thing if everyone stays in the same cheap motel, but..

  • @leetomboulian

    Yes, but it's not industry standard. You must not be a musician to say such a thing. No offense.

    Interesting, Zappa type one each, Frank's so called music irritates my ears and annoys my mind. I would expect music to sooth my ears and instill motion in my soul. Frank developed a knack to compose sounds that only the mentally deranged can appreciate. His accomplishments demonstrate his evil master mind of the strange kind, a legend to lost souls with troubled minds.

      Tony Iocca Really, Tony. I'm just curious at this point. As I view the Zappa interviews on UA-cam, you put this same comment in reply to every video. Of course, the 5 words only applied to the first video you commented on - that with Frank & Moon on Letterman. I've provided my educated reply to your remaining words...but, can you just answer one question please? What is your goal or point to commenting on every video of a man you dislike? Seems like a waste of time to me? Comments?

      scottsbooks I apologize for taking so long to reply to your question thanks to Sven for getting my attention. Seems like a waste of time... The people I knew that paid money for Zappa records back in the 1970's thought Zappa made their collection more valuable. I for one differ, I worked way to hard for my money to give it up to the likes of Zappa. Zappa worked hard to keep his recordings from getting played by radio stations so the only way to hear Zappa is to buy Zappa. To me that was Zappa's legacy, collecting money from record collectors. As far as music goes I call it like I hear it and Zappa is "NOISE POLLUTION."

      scottsbooks "Conceptual continuity", 'The Big Note', 'Project/Object' theories were developed as a way of manipulating the music business (with whom Frank had been playing games with from the get go), into believing that Frank is on a higher plane than the rest of the music industry, and should there-fore be given greater consideration (i.e. coverage and publicity). It should not be treated as anything more meaningful than that. I am convinced that Frank was a bullshitter. Frank left his definition of "Conceptual Continuity" deliberately vague, and has never really given any concrete examples of it. What he does do, is drop in the occasional "hint", just to remind us that there is a greater plan in the operation. (stringing his audience along) Frank's main proof of the existence of a "master plan" comes in the form of Them or Us - the Book. In this, Frank provides us with a sort of summary/overview of his work to date, linking a lot of it into a single story. Basically, he's trying to show us the common thread. However, this book just proves finally that there is no thread. Many of the connections between the individual concepts (Hunchentoot , Billy the Mountain, Joe's Garage, Greggary Peccary, etc.) are insubstantial or tenuous to say the least.
      Conceptual Continuity, is Frank Zappa's, version of something similar to "The Emperor's New Clothes"

      scottsbooks I tried to explain what the Zappa experience became. I know you and many more Zappa types think they are on a "higher plane" and consider Zappa as some kind of a "extraordinary creative super genius" I write to defend my comment, "Zappa's accomplishments demonstrate his evil master mind of the strange kind, a legend to lost souls with troubled minds".
