Your explanation about identifying the “big shapes” was so helpful Tom. It is all in the “seeing” and how to “see” like an artist. It makes so much sense. Love your painting of this stunning bird. Thanks Tom (-: Marion 🦜
Such a thrilling and fun approach! This is a new concept to me: identifying large shapes to anchor the piece which allows you to splash about with the rest. Thank you very much for sharing. Love your work and your videos! ~Simone N
Your tutorials started my watercolour journey last summer when i was in a tough place and ive not looked back. Honestly changed my life for the better improving my mental wellbeing and giving me purpose. I also see the world around me differently. Thankyou so very much Tom. Another excellent tutorial 🙏👍🎨
It really is amazing to hear this, thank you for sharing!! From my own experiences, and through teaching others, the link between creativity/painting and positive affects on mental health is huge!... I used to host a local community radio show and the station manager was very deep into Quantum biology and also brain science, fascinating guy, and he often spoke how from a biological point of view, in relation to our brain chemistry, we have evolved for creativity and time spent creating to be a vital part of our weekly life, if not actually daily life if possible... It certainly gives me a real purpose, a way to look at the world, express my self and interact with the world; and a stronger sense of who I am as a person...without painting (plus playing a bit of music), I would be completely lost! So in short, I hear you on what a powerful thing it is to have in our lifes...and what an amazing thing it is! ...and so glad to hear you have found it and that it has helped you so much. Here's to a creative life in whatever form that takes for us!!:)
The Resplendent Guatemalan Quetzal! My aunt has recently requested my take on this bird for her in a watercolor painting. You made this very powerful. Wonderful job Tom!
Nice demo! You have become my "Go-to" UA-cam watercolor instruction source. Your enthusiasm comes through and that is important to me. I feel you strike a good balance between theory and practice. Keep up the good work!
💥Paul Clark sent me here and I'm so very grateful !! I like to use my imagination when I paint. I like to paint a little bit abstract, a little bit real, a little bit loose, and a little bit EVERYTHING ... (all without having my painting turn into a hot mess!!) hahahaha And you have proved that it CAN BE DONE❗ 💕 I'm SO glad I'm here. 🤗
Haha yes, I can fully relate to that!!:) i love letting a painting evolve away from the reference, using imagination, abstract versus real...it’s fun!!! Thank you for a lovely comment and so glad you’re joining me over here:)
this is so incredible! It is super inspiring to smaller youtubers, like myself who shamelessly wants to get better at art and share it with the world, seeing you create something so beautiful is so motivating, very much enjoyed!! :) I am definitely going to try loose water colour painting soon!
Thanks for another encouraging and insightful tutorial. I started watercolour painting in 2020, and I am really enjoying it-love your videos and am inspired to go a little less controlled and break loose-pun intended ;) . Just love your paintings! Thanks for breaking down the theory and then showing how it applies.
Your videos have helped me so much. The way you explain ideas, theories, methods and techniques have made the most sense to my mind. Thank you for your talent, time and knowledge😊
Thank you immensely for sharing and demonstrating your art skills. Your ability to convey concepts is helpful and inspiring. Your voice is also pleasant which adds to the overall joy of learning from this channel. 😎🎉👍👍
Glad i found your channel! Love this work and im very excited to start loose painting :) currently im doing a splattered paint forest on a small quarter circle, like those pictures with giant objects sticking up from the planet and then loose sketching in ink the outer shapes, i think it will be fun!😊
Just found you and really enjoyed this tutorial. Looking forward to explore what you have posted earlier and to see new content coming. Have a feeling that you will teach me new things 😊 Thanks
PS I talk about your channel again in today's video that will drop at 10 Eastern at about minute 14:50. I seriously am so ga-ga over this bit of knowledge and am so thankful for you sharing it. I really think it will change my painting in a big way!
I'm brand new to watercolour and I love how your videos simplify what I felt was a very complicated medium. I have two questions: 1) 100% cotton paper is so darn pricey, I was wondering what's the difference between that and the cheaper cellulose paper, and whether that would frustrate a newbie 2) do you paint on an easel or flat on the table? Thank you for the great work you've done!
Hi ya Monica, so pleased you are finding the videos useful!!! It varies greatly across brands. You’ll find cotton paper generally stays wet a little longer, and can be more forgiving, the overall quality and feel is a touch higher in most cases, and generally a better experience Whilst I do feel cotton paper is worth the extra price, there are still some great wood pulp papers though...I regularly use Winsor and Newton classic range of pads and sheets. In my opinion they’re comparable to some cotton papers - you won’t get frustrated ... Just stay away from the really cheap stuff. It’s simply not worth your time and money... And whilst your learning, finding a balance of a good paper, that also doesn’t break the bank is key (you’ll get through lots of it, and not always successful paintings, which is normal!!:) For me, Winsor and Newton classic does that...but give a freer ands a go :)
Hi Tom, the minute I saw the reference photo, I could see how the movement would suit your style of painting. So that is a bonus takeaway for me - choosing a photo that suits your style. Thank you for showing which sections to keep detailed accurate shapes and which sections can be more expressive - I still need to grow and be brave in this. I'm keen to join the workshop I might just have trouble with zoom - is it only available live or will it be available to watch later? I'm a bit nervous of hitting a wrong button an everyone is like, where did Tom go and who is this?
Ha, I agree, I knew as soon as I saw the photo it would be painted soon!!;)....it's a great topic actually, choosing a reference photo. I'll make a video on my thoughts and experiences on it soon.....the bravery will come iwth time, I am still trying to push myself to be more brave!!:) Each session in Workshops can be watched after for 14 days (you can also purchase them to won if really wanted)...haha don't quote me (might be famous last words) but I m fairly certain it's very hard to make anything happen on Zoom that's unwanted (unless you are the host!!)....Im pretty sure you can't accidentally put all the attention on your video and suddenly you have to provide a painting demo because you've deleted me (haha!)
@@tomshepherdartist That's wonderful news, keen to hear about choosing a good reference. And... although I'm still on the soft pastels detour I think I need to clear some space on my phone so that I can load Zoom - and practice using it so that I can sign up and enjoy the class without stressing about technology- it helps that it will be available afterwards. I really don't want to miss this. You are very kind to offer the free workshop when you are showing so much on UA-cam already. Thank you
Thank you for this demo. I learnt a lot. This is how I’d like to paint. Going in with the details doesn’t seem to be compatible with me! I’ll try the big shapes tho, I think this an element that I’ve been missing. Thanks for this, will take a look at the demo.
Hi Tom, I have just started following you! Your paintings are amazing. How do you choose the colours as they don’t always relate to the photo but work perfectly.
Great question. I am generally squinting or blurring my eyes and looking for shapes that are a similar, or the same, tonal values. So on this one I saw the underside of the wing, the shadow on the body, neck and head as all one large shape, roughly the same tone...where as the back of the distant wing is very different tonal value form the underside of the other wing...to my eye they are separate shapes forma tonal point of view:)....turning a photo into monotone might really help...I hope that makes sense and helps. T
Thank you so much for making such a great video tom really helpfull. Im currently studying in watercolor technique but on digital, so the question is if i watch traditional watercolor tutorial can i also apply that on digital as well, even though the watercolor brushes in digital work completely different?
Thank you so much! Yes, absolutely it can apply...the technique to do so of course different, but the principal of using one or two large shapes to hold a piece together would apply to any medium, physical or digital, and any subject!!:)
