    I love how you articulate your thoughts. Sometimes one needs reminding on why and how fell in love with an artform. The thought is applicable for any creative endeavour, watercolour just happens to be our current fascination.

    Almost every one of my favorite paintings has resulted from tapping into that freedom and freshness. I was able to do it a bit with hot press paper today. Usually with hot press I bog down with details, or obsess over the harsh drying lines, but today I just layed down the colors quickly and simply, kept the washes to a minimum, and achieved a result that almost perfectly matched what I had seen in my head.

    • @tomshepherdartist

      Hi Teri, thanks for the comment. The macaw was on Winsor and Newton professional rough, being cotton rag and rough texture it stays wet for a good while and colours look great!! The hummer was on Canson, Moulin du Roy. It dries quicker but colours look great and it seems to lend itself to quick brushstrokes and is quite forgiving as a paper. I prefer this one at a smaller scale. Hope that helps :) T

    Love this video! I've been painting since maybe September last year and at first I was seeing a lot of improvement in my paintings but recently felt like I'd hit a wall and was over-working my paintings getting too tight with all the details. A couple of weeks ago I decided to just use totally unrealistic colours to represent what I was painting to try to loosen up and I ended up having a lot of fun and getting some really lovely effects. One of them has actually ended up being one of my favourite ever of my paintings! :)

    How brave to paint the eyes towards the end. I have to ensure the eye is done properly right away, before spending time and money on paint and good paper, only to have the eye misplaced or expressionless. The eyes are everything.

    • @tomshepherdartist
      @tomshepherdartist  3 роки тому

      Yes! I do totally understand that. I do sometimes start with the eye and spiral out from there...was feeling brave and the eye was the little reward right at the end (ha!!) Thank you for the input, T
