Was Utah Jazz Pick Kyle Filipowski Groomed by a Mormon Girlfriend, Caitlin Hutchison? | Ep. 1915

  • Tonight we will be discussing one of the biggest surprises of the 2024 NBA Draft - the fall of Duke forward Kyle Filipowski. Filipowski is a skilled 7-foot big man, two-time All-ACC selection and All-American in 2024. He was projected as a first-round pick by many accounts, but ended up being chosen as the second pick of the second round. Most are blaming Kyle's Mormon girlfriend - Caitlin Hutchison (8 years his senior) - and accusing her of grooming him as an adult while he was a child/teenager.

I was investigating the Mormon church in 2007 in a “flirt to convert” scenario. A very attractive, returned missionary wanted to marry me and told me that he couldn’t unless I converted to the church. I thought I loved him but I couldn’t understand why I had to convert for us to be together. I was raised in an evangelical family and my parents were secretly petrified that I was going to convert and they were going to loose me. They handled it so well … instead of forbidding me to see him or date him (which would’ve backfired), they encouraged me to research and my dad said let’s research this church together. We got online, purchased books, looked at official and unofficial sources and then discussed them together. I ultimately decided that the evidence against the church was so damning that I couldn’t convert. I told my handsome returned missionary that I’d like to stay with him but could never be Mormon. He said that sadly could not happen. I’m so thankful for this ending!

That's pretty wild. It reminds me of one day when I went to my then-girlfriend's apartment to pick her up for a date when I noticed two young, somewhat attractive female missionaries dressed nice and wearing their nametags standing in the parking lot and looking in my direction. I sat in my car for about 15 minutes to take a work-related phone call and they were still there when I got out of my car. They were both extremely flirtatious and kept asking me if I wanted to meet them somewhere more private to discuss their religion (I am not LDS nor have I ever been). Gave me a creepy sister wives vibe and I got the hell out of there.

One note about college basketball (recruiting and team culture): families are often very involved. They typically build strong bonds with the head coach and assistant coaches during the recruitment process, and often travel with the team to road games, etc. For the family to be cut off from their son AND the coaches shortly after he arrived at school…and basically replaced by the gf and her family…is very unusual. A coach would not go unresponsive to a player’s family unless the player strongly convinced him not to. There’s definitely a lot more to this story.

I heard that Kyle gave all his tickets to games to Kaitlyn's family. I doubt his family was banned from campus, but they'd have to buy their own tickets. If I was a coach, I wouldn't think it was my place to tell a player he has to give his allocated tickets to his family or that he has to talk to them. But his brother seems to think the legendary coach K would have.

Families at times do have conflict sad to say but true. Yes, families do have conflicts over who a son or daughter dates and that can lead to them not communicating. Have you seen that letter that Kyle wrote to his family. If not how do you know the words in that letter. Anyone can take words and change the meaning or just make up stuff that suits what they are feeling. I also think that if you do leave this subject alone that the son and family will start communicating again but you keep pushing that many never happen. So the best thing I can say is that leave them alone and let the family work out their disagreements.

Mormons aren't as strict about dress before the temple as they used to be. I live in Utah and you can't tell by clothes anymore, except on Sunday, who is and who isn't active. If she's got no tattoos, that's more of a tell these days. But even tattoos aren't frowned on as much as they were.
Females who haven't been through the temple are much more liberal in their clothing choices, often showing shoulders etc these days.

John, seems like the NBA sees the Kyle and Katelyn relationship as the source of any potential problem, not his mom and brother. They've stayed out of his life for 2 years. They weren't causing any problem.
For the NBA to drop him down so far with all that talent, the problem has to be one they see with his relationship with HER, and whatever comes with her. And like his mom said, you're not going to get the story from him, if he is being coerced and controlled.
I think it would be worth it to read the clips he had about new York's coercive control laws. South Carolina is trying to get laws about coercive control passed because of what recently happened with Mica Miller and her pastor husband controlling her. I have a feeling, that the whole reason they are angry with Duke is because they knew of this reaching a level that is abuse that he was suffering. If Duke coaches knew he was being abused, lied to and coerced in ways that harmed him, and swept it under the rug so the NBA would want him, that would be a reason for his family to blame them. Their reputation is tied to his, i can see where they would hide a problem so they can have an NBA star come from their school.
The NBA would fear if she has undue influence that rises to the level of abuse. If they think she is controlling him in abusive ways and he isn't good at standing up for himself, that could be why they got scared. And the family is thinking why didn't Duke help him, when they knew she had isolated him from them helping him?!
It doesn't seem likely his family are the toxic ones, since they have stayed out of his life for 2 years against their will, until it came out in the news. They might think this is the last chance they have to save him. Not just from the Mormon church, but from this girl and the Mormon church united to control him, taking away his free choice, maybe harming him mentally or even physically.

Some context/counterpoints from the other side:
-This was a very flat draft. Kyle Filipowski wasn't even the Jazz draft pick that slipped the furthest. Isaiah Collier was picked three spots ahead of KF at 29 but was the number one high school recruit in the country last year. He slipped way more than Kyle Filipowski. Cody Williams, the Jazz's 10th pick also slipped in the draft. Yes, KF should have been drafted earlier, but something like this happens every single year.
-The Filipowski family hasn't gotten a single credible news source to pick up their story. People aren't rushing to get the scoop on such a salacious story that's bound to get eyeballs. We should be asking how credible the family is. They make vague accusations, and tell us to do research on grooming, so we're left to speculate the worst. It's entirely possible that this girl is a gold digger, but it's also possible that the family saw Kyle as their meal ticket, and he's being abused on both sides. The mother also got the age of Hutchison wrong. She'll be 27 in September, not 28, KF will be 21 in November. So yeah, there's an age gap, and yeah it's weird, but he's an adult now, and not only an adult, but an adult with one of the best and well respected agents in the country. If he's being manipulate its possible he's being manipulated by a GF, an agent, and his family. We just don't know and no party is being clear enough to come to a conclusion.
-Call me crazy, but Hutchison doesn't come off as the type to groom someone into Mormonism, especially if their relationship has been sexual in nature. She might be a controlling succubus that wants his money, but conflating all that with Mormonism when it doesn't appear she's particularly devout and he hasn't converted, suggests that Mormonism is being dragged into this unjustly. I mean I'm an exmo so there's no love lost, but this seems like a stretch to me.
-One last thing I'd point out is we don't know who instigated this relationship. KF went to Duke, his twin brother went to Harvard. This might be a high pressure family he was looking to escape and she was his out. The age difference could also be explained by the popularization of young men fantasizing about being with older women. Words like Cougar and MILF have entered the vernacular and it's clear KF knows people will stare as he said in his IG post. A few years back a rookie in the league was dating an older porn star, same with Jimmy Garoppolo in the NFL. It's possible this is something KF fetishizes.

I think I'd consider the age difference in the relationship a 'cougar' situation if he was older when it seems to have started. The prom thing makes me not care who instigated the relationship. If she was dating him when he was in high school and she was in her mid-20s, then she instigated it, whether she thinks so or not.

Kyle's girlfriend does not look or act like a Mormon, so if she is Mormon, she is probably a Jack Mormon. I think Kyle's family has gone off the deep end and has caused the separation between them. I think that all of the negative talk regarding Mormons has put them in a tailspin. I don't think they would approve of Caitlin even if she was not Mormon, because of her age. She is a beautiful woman and he is a handsome guy, and apparently, they are in love with each other. If the family truly wanted a relationship with Kyle, they would not be the one's trying to control him and trying to separate him from the woman he fell in love with. She is a beautiful woman, and she may be beautiful inside and out, and that is why he fell in love with her. I am not Mormon, but was raised Mormon. Caitlin is not a staunch Mormon. You can tell that by the way she dresses. If they are living together and not married, she would probably be excommunicated from the church. My Aunt was excommunicated for living with a man, after her children were raised, and not married to him. So, comes the question. Who is really trying to control Kyle? I think his family pictured something else for him, than what he has chosen, and they are freaking out because they cannot control him. They have gone off the deep end, blaming the Mormon Church and everyone else, which is only going to further the separation between them. It is going to be hard to repair their relationship after all this drama.

I think NBA teams are taking players’ support systems more seriously as a factor when drafting these days after some high-profile draft picks have struggled once they got to the league with performance and health issues on the court and, sadly, poor off-the-court conduct. Hitting right on a draft pick can be a game-changer for less valuable franchises as acquiring talent in other ways becomes much more expensive, so teams want to make sure the players they pick will be resilient, and having a solid support system is key. Players come from all sorts of familial situations, but Fillipowski seemingly being willingly estranged from his family would definitely be considered a potential issue.

That felt odd to me. Also I wanted to take duke's side, but wondering about seeing the recruiting process if maybe that coach who had left maybe told the family and stayed them thinking and so they trusted him with their son and then he was gone and they saw how much worse it got? John let’s pause for a second & realize he was living in a athletic department dorm @ 17 his first semester in college. If they let her stay over, then that’s illegal and on them. If the athletic director banned his family in the arena, when he was 17, that is illegal without him emancipating. This is literally half the premise of the show One Tree Hill except in this case a grown woman found a 5 star recruit still in high school and used the move to duke to monopolize his life. Duke only cared about getting their blue blood program back on track after coach K retired & needed filipiowski to rebound. Bottom dollar of the athletic department means they keep the rape (statutory in this case) under raps to avoid the legal consequences of allowing this to happen under their supervision of a minor. Simple

They do seem overly aggressive in their X posts. It is understandable that they'd be concerned, but once your kid is an adult you have to let them make their own choices. If you try to control too much you risk getting cut off.

I think you have to be very careful here. This probably started out with a 16 year old boy dating a 24 year old woman. While Kyle was in high school, his family probably had some control of the situation. It's understandable that Kyle's family saw his girlfriend as a gold digger and an inappropriate sex interest. They may have good reason to go after his girlfriend while Kyle was in high school. If so, they would have addressed the problem with local authorities. The problem is once Kyle turned 18 and entered Duke, he could legally date whoever he wanted. Duke would have no legal right to get involved in interfering with Kyle and Cailyn's relationship.
I think it is pretty clear that Kyle's mother is using Caitlyn's loose Mormon association to advance her theory that Kyle is a victim of a cult. This appears to be a bunch of nonsense. If anything, Kyle is a classical victim of a teenager letting his sexual drive to override his brain functions. Any improprieties would have occurred while he was in high school before he attended Duke.
Whenever a mother seriously attacks her son's girlfriend or wife, it often leads to estrangement. It doesn't require cult shunning for this to happen.

Feelings aren't facts. But my feeling is that these college players are very pampered with training, healthcare, nutrition, massage and even mental therapy provided by the schools.
So this basketball player was definitely telling someone about his life, dating history, gilrfriend and challenges (confessing things to coaches and teamates-- esp if he didn't talk with his parents as counselors).
The conerning part is the power differential with the girlfriend, the classic cult isolation, and the possibility of professionals at the college, damaging other people to groom and boost this career into the NBA.

If the genders were reversed, the older partner would probably be investigated by the police.
"Age is just a number" one might say, and I would agree if we're talking about people 25+ years old but not young adolescents or worse, teenagers.
A 30 yo and a 37 yo sleeping together sounds reasonable.
A 24 yo dating a 17 yo teenager that they used to babysit is creepy. Throw a healthy dose of religious manipulation in the mix and you got yourself a very concerning situation, even if both parties say they consent.
An age gap is fine but *both parties need to be equally mature* and that is only _really_ possible once the brain is fully developed (at 26-ish.)

Hi John, just to correct you, coercive control is a form of abuse and is slowly becoming recognised as a severe form of domestic violence as it very rarely involves actual physical violence (so nothing to report) but is manipulative, isolating and controlling, removing all agency from victims. It can and does escalate to severe violence when the controlled party attempts to leave, so police have to be trained to understand what coercive control is to adequately deal with situations and appropriately identify the real victim and provide them with assistance. It is not only high-demand religion that uses coercive control. A great guest to understand coercive control is Laura Richards (@CrimeAnalyst and @RealCrimeProfile).
