Given Jeeps quality and financial issues, I think it would be a great idea if Toyota went back to the Landcruiser roots and make a vehicle that is more Jeep like. Like they looked in 1968. Give us a Wrangler alternative!
@ChevyRobSCV it's not easy meeting fuel efficiency goals with such a boxy vehicle. Also, the new Landcruiser looks more like the early models than they have for a very long time. It took making a hybrid for it to be efficient. But for now, it's also buggy

$15k Hilux would sell like hotcakes. Toyota has a history of overly cautious missing-the-boat. Hope the hybrid or EV helps catch Toyota past the bribes they lobbied against EV.
I don’t understand why they would bring the full sized Land Cruiser here along with the 4Runner. It makes more sense to me to pick one of those and then the baby land cruiser. Toyota has so many larger cars focused on family etc. this makes me so sad
Well I was set on getting this vehicle but of course it can’t come here. What’s it gonna take for us to have a small 4x4 like the Suzuki Jimny because this is ridiculous!
Same, I’ve been waiting for this to come out….I didn’t want to get a full size Land Cruiser. Everything is family sized why can’t we just have a nimble little 4x4
I know this is depressing for USA. But it’s a true blessing for Thai car market. Forget chicken tax, we have 328% tax for imported car engine size over 2L to incentivize car manufacturers investing factories in Thailand. 55k USD MSRP Land Cruiser car imported from Japan gonna cost 180K~ish USD here without dealers markup . Meanwhile our yearly household income is 10K a year
Thanks for the perspective. There are so many false narratives about global 'free trade' and Thailand is not the only country with huge tariffs to block auto imports.
Finally, a real video on this long-awaited SUV!! Thank you, Kirk! I hope Toyota will make this model available in Europe. Please make a follow-up video later. Happy New Year!!
Interesting. I live in Thailand half the year and we’ll be shopping cars next year. I have a 2007 FJ in the states and love the idea of a 2.7 liter gas 4 cylinder in the Land Cruiser FJ. Makes sense that it shared the Hilux Champ platform because it looks just like it in the front. I was looking at the Fortuner but the FJ might be an option 👍
Bought a 24 Sport Badlands. Amazing and people who don't off road all the time, it is great. 5 year loan, so we'll see how the FJ Mini comes along. We'll See about the FJ Mini.... not holding out hope.
It makes more sense for Toyota to sell a version of the next generation RAV4 as an entry level Landcruiser. Yes it will be a unibody construction, but no chicken tax.
I dont think ameicans are getting inflation, the usa dollar is collapsing. Inflation means everything cost more. Honda is selling civic for 45G in Canada. CArs will never be cheap again
I know this is something i have been excited for. Most 4wds available in Aus have been getting bigger between each generation or go soft. Excited to see a smaller proper 4wd. Have a suzuki jimny and its great but it is a kei car and at the end of the day i was at the limit of its design with weight and mods. Hoping that this pitches a better option than the chinese tank 300, bring better payload and efficiency. Not sure if you get the GWM Tank's over states side.
They should turn the Land Cruiser name to an off shoot like the crown. LC FJ as the entry level, the current 250, and a 300 built on the sequoia platform.
I’m more sad that even Mazda fell for the “Headlights in bumper” trend… No consumer likes it, yet another thing brands just push & consumers have to accept.
No doubt, the orders will quickly exceed the annual production capacity, forcing a halt to new orders. If it goes global, it’ll likely become as hard to get as the Land Cruiser 70. Even if you’re lucky enough to buy one, you’d still have to worry about theft.
I would like the Mini Landcruiser in the size of the Toyota Cross with the RAV4's 2.5L hybrid engine & tranny + LE basic equipment to keep the price down to around $30K. And in bright yellow or bright blue color!
This is obviously a JDM and/or ASEAN market car. The tighter roads, tighter fuel requirements and more crowded dense cities. I won't be surprised if this is a rebadged Daihatsu like so many of Toyota subcompacts these days or based off the Hilux Champ. We need to come to grips that the NA market is now a completely different and parallel universe of it's own from the rest of the world.
Kirk, No Automaker is perfect and no automaker should be measured against perfection. If Toyota fails to build the affordable Land Cruiser FJ to North American standards, it will represent a major failure on their part but it will not be their first or last mistake. For the time being, I will maintain a faint hope the FJ will come here. 🤞 If I could have any Land Cruiser in production today it would be a toss up between the 250 Prado with the 2TR-FE engine, the 300 Series with the 1GR-FE and triple lockers, the SWB 70 Series with the 1GR-FE and manual transmission or the Land Cruiser single cab pickup with the 1GR-FE manual powertrain. Having said that, I would be willing to 'compromise' with any current Land Cruiser equipped with a gasoline engine.🤩
I have a 2023 Land Cruiser 70 series , or should I say it’s a Land Cruiser 78 Troop Carrier (Troopy) V8 manual diesel. I’m lucky to live in one of the true free country’s in the world. They’d most likely price this at $42k base and at that point it is competing too closely to 4Runner. Unlikely they will sell this here. They want you buying a 4Runner or RAV4.
They should start with a new model called the 1957. This would simply be the 1958 equipped with the 2TR-FE engine they already sell in overseas models of the 250 . Without the Hybrid and turbo complexity, it could retail for $10,000 less.
300 series all day every day. Give me the full fledged heavy duty Cruiser. None of the light duty crap that we get here now. With a diesel and a manual trans. But thats all a pipe dream. It will never happen.
So it’s not coming to usa. Not too surprised, Toyota already has the rav4 and corolla cross that are competitors to the bronco sport and doing very well. It was more of wishful thinking they would bring this here. But instead they will force buyers that want this to get a 4runner or the full fj if that comes. Damn. I was looking forward to a toyota bronco sport. That boxy shape is nice.
The 4Runner shares underpinnings to the Land Cruiser Prado, which is a bit more to the luxury side and meant to compete with the Pajero. Except the Prado also has a turbodiesel. Add Luxury and a V8, you get the Lexus GS.
With the repeal of the chevron deference and the epa being given non constitutional powers maybe we will get dialed back emmisions standards in the near future....
Let’s get rid of all the electronic bullshit and deliver basic all round off road vehicles that can be fixed without computer diagnostics. I want a vehicle that can be damaged with easily replaced panels without going back to the dealership. Fixing a damaged panel on a Rivian is not acceptable, 30,000 to fix a bloody dent is taking the piss. We don’t use off roads to drop off and pick up the kids from kindergarten, are the manufacturers off their heads 😮
Great trucks for low level rebel groups looking for a platform to carry various weapon systems. Everyone wants Toyota quality! So building in Thailand makes sense.
Toyota could call it the FJ Cruiser. Make it smaller and less expensive than the 4Runner. Equip it with the 2.4L I-4 with and without turbo, but no hybrid. Maybe a rear locking differential for the TRD version.
Toyota needs to narrow down their Suv's offering, it's good they have a wide variety of them it's might make it more complicated for the average buyers, great channel & always You're on top of the automotive market, thank you
Ikr, as an American ever since I discovered the global market and its offerings. Especially discovering the Suzuki Jimny while I was in Mexico, I was and still am incredibly devastated
I feel like with how popular SUVs are. Especially Toyota Suvs there is a market for a cheaper two door SUV under 30k for younger buyers. Toyota has gone crazy making various 40-50k plus cars and really needs to come back down to reality.
For years many of us believed the Chicken Tax only applied to pickups and vans but around 1989 it was modified to include 2 door SUVs like the original 4Runner and Nissan Pathfinder. That may be the reason we never see 2 door SUVs from Japan despite the fact they have built many over the decades. It may also explain why Toyota built the FJ Cruiser with clam shell rear doors instead of simply sending over the 2 door Prado.
@@kens8903 The ergonomic and visibility compromises of the FJ were a joke compared to the rational 4Runner and that is the reason sales faded to nothing after an initial burst of success. The 2 door Prado was a smoothly executed design that stood the test of time.
@ Probably faded because it wasn’t updated in the years they made it and was just a little bit too early on the mini off roader suv craze. Though if they sold it today, it would probably do good numbers. I believe they’re leaving money on the table by not bringing over a shorten land cruiser. Look at the prices of used FJ cruisers. People who want more space are going to buy the larger vehicle. People who don’t need as much well buy the shorter one. Right now potential customers are reduced to buying the 10yr old plus FJ cruiser with 150k+ miles hoping it isn’t a rust bucket for $20k+ or buying a two door wrangler or bronco.
Toyota already asked Suzuki if they could have the Jimny and Suzuki said no, it's too valuable to the brand. That's why they are working on the baby FJ.
Agreed, I have an XB I'm looking to replace (I'm keeping it) and would love to upgrade to something Wrangler-sized from Toyota. A new FJ would be perfect, and the new Tacoma is attractive but they haven't built one to spec I want and they don't take orders. The maverick might win out since toyota doesn't want my money.

Nope, the harsh truth is that in order to cut costs this (if all of this is meant to be real, as I've hearing of "this will be launched in a few months" since 2022) won't be as reliable and sturdy as other vehicles from Toyota.
Suzuki wouldn't allow Toyota to rebadge the Jimny and Swift, as they should! This "FJ" is Toyota's reaction to that and I think is poised to be the rumored sub-Fortuner product. Also thinking this would be the successor of the long in the tooth body-on-frame seven-seater SUV-ish MPV Rush for developing markets. As for a "cheaper" LC for North America, I thought the 4Runner already served that purpose?
@KirkKreifels Honestly think North America is too snooty of a market for something that's runored to be based on the platform underpinning the Hilux Champ/Rangga/Tamaraw, which is a true workhorse. With a potential FJ priced at the upper $20k-mid $30k range, I could just imagine complaints on how such a vehicle isn't sophisticated or smooth enough for N. American tastes. What I think would really fly over there is a production version of the FT-4X, a rugged looking unibody crossover that's just like the Bronco Sport.
Let’s all hope and pray the new administration starts cutting some of these overreaching emissions regulations, among others so we can have more vehicle choice and lower cost options. Freedom of choice 🇺🇸

Yes but LC and 4R are about the same size. We want something smaller available
Cool
Toyota -- fall from grace?
