    Great video! My mum actually got this brand new for my 16th birthday so that would’ve been 1999. Still use this exact same amp 23 years later. It takes pedals really well and love the auxiliary input with the headphone jack to play along with your favourite tunes without pissing off your neighbours. I’ve never actually had to get this amp serviced, ever. It just keeps going.

    Great video Dave, yet another example of how to get great sound from cheap (and much maligned) equipment. The only thing I do notice is the MG30's tendency to sound a bit 'boxy'. I had the same issue with mine, but found that I could fit a 12 inch MG speaker in the cabinet, so I put one in that I had taken out of my MG cabinet, which now contains 4 G12T-75's. The 12 inch speaker eradicated the boxy sound and makes the MG30DFX a really great practice amp. It's also easy to fit a switching jack socket so you can run the MG30 into a cabinet, once again a massive improvement in sound quality. You can pick these things up scary cheap and for about £30 all in for a decent example you have a very versatile practice amp, which can be run through a 4x12 if you so desire.

    I really like your tutorial of the MG30DFX. Good coverage of the features and you play well. I watched a few others which caused me to regret my commitment made today to buy a used one tomorrow. Cheap! However my enthusiasm is restored. I will sell the 30 watt Peavey that is blessed with the same features but despite prolonged effort, I cannot, cannot get it to deliver the effects anywhere near to the level you've demonstrated on that Marshall! You've made my day. As Clint used to say.

    Dave i am with you all the way on the whole mg series i have an mg 50 dfx and an mg 250 dfx stereo which is amazing, i gigged this for many a year and it never let me down. Why do people slag off these amps they sound brilliant and are unbelievably cheap not only to buy but to repair, all the components are stock stuff. Great playing by the way i wished my brain and fingers would coordinate as well as yours clearly do. stay safe and cheers for sharing. Andy. Scotland.

Eveybody just like all tubes amps, but these are a great marshall amps im my opinion. So, I like it so much that I have three of them. A 100 watts head , a 100 watts combo and a 15 watts to play at home.

    I have owned one of these for more years than I care to remember, bought almost brand new from someone who found it too complicated, for £50 :-) . It is well used and a bit battered now and her indoors does not like it (thinks it's ugly !!!). I sometimes mess with it still when she's out but mainly just for blues and Hendrix type stuff. Bullet proof reliability. Takes pedals OK as well so no complaints from me - got to be the best £50 I ever spent.

    I agree… of the Marshall practice combos, this is one of their better ones. It hits right! There was also one in the mid 1980’s that was equally sweet.. I have to remember which one that was. I had it but long since sold that one for an “upgrade” which I learned to regret.

    just bought a used MG50FX for $99 USD.. sweet cleans with stock speaker (i am a clean tone guy, with some low-to-mid gain saturated tones added for spice).. my fender champion 100s are exceptional amps, but they are fender amps thru and thru.. really can't get the fender eq out of it without destroying the tones.. so, looking to add to my stable of solid-state amps with some marshall flavors.. looking forward to putting some cream and green into them.. just purchased a pair of fane A60 alnico for good measure.. most folks are really missing the sonic capabilities of these amps.. make them as good as they can be (with some great pedal-driven harmonics, great speakers and great pickups).. they can be top-shelf tone machines without being "valve" clones.. many thx for being a trailblazer on the oftentimes lonely solid-state path..

    I find with this amp you need a compressed space for the optimum sound.
    If you have this amp in your yard or a big room or basement it’s not going to sound the greatest as the sound with not carry that well and will become somewhat flat.
    But if your at home and jamming at a low level these are good.
    There best for practice because a large 100 watts amp on 1 or 2 can be louder then this amp so if you but one and you live in a apartment you won’t be able to use a 100 watt amp because even on low they are loud especially tube amps.
    Everyone thinks just because it’s a Marshall that a amp like this is good for a stadium when it’s not.
    It sounds fantastic but it’s not meant to be driven past seven or eight max I don’t even go past six on my volume because these amps are not going to sound good cranked.
    These amp sound very good if your looking for sound quality and not volume it perfect and I love the one I have.

    So Dave since I acquired my first MG100hdfx I've been in love. I only paid $80 for the head and the footswitch came with it. I didn't have really any idea what these sounded like, I just wanted a cheap 100 watt backup if you will.
    For those that don't like these amps, give them a listen again. Perhaps your ears have changed a bit cause these amps are killer. I now have 3 of these amps, the MG100HDFX, the MG100DFX 1x12 combo, and a MG30DFX 1x10 combo. I'm about to get another MG50DFX if the guy will trade me.
    I personally don't like the sound of the AVT or the Valvestate series, I think those are terrible sounding.
    Anyways, Dave, good job!! Looks like it's me and you who are collecting these things.

      I have a MG30CFX and I like it. There is an MP3 input where you can plug your ipod into your amp and play along with songs which makes recording so much nicer. I can't imagine any reason why the DFX would be better. But people like to hate on Marshalls for any reason basically.

    Hey dave, have you ever tried the Marshall DSL40C? I typically use the MG100HDFX but I wanted a combo because I got sick of lugging the half stack around. Wonderful tube amp! A loud 40 watts with a switch to go down to 20 watts if need be. The Creamback variation is choice!

      So far the reverb is the biggest weak point for the DSL, not as lush as the MG. But I feel it still retains nice tone at low volumes.

      I've been intrigued by those for a long time, I may get one for the birthday and throw a celestion redback in there. I liked the Marshall MG30DFX I got around 07 or 08. Bought a Musician's Friend exclusive in purple. And you know what? I wish I still had that amp. Probably the best home amp I've ever had.

    • @bumblefritz
      @bumblefritz 7 років тому +1

      Ian Alderman
      Indeed. I'm keeping my MG100HDFX. It's a Really great amp. Tonally the DSL and MG are a little different, both excellent, both very Marshall. The DSL'S cleans are wonderful. I'm unfamiliar with Redbacks, I'll have to try some if I ever come across them. I'm in love with the Creamback so far.

    • @ianalderman9290
      @ianalderman9290 7 років тому

      Bumblefritz
      The redback is a very new speaker from Celestion. 150 watts, 2 inch voice coil, a bit relaxed in the treble and supposedly a "darker" Creamback. Very interesting speaker and should do well for Celestion. And like your Creamback it's made in the UK. Do you have the H type or M type Creamback? I'm still very interested in the DSL40C, I just wish there was one that I could actually try out. There are lots of UA-cam video demos and many seem quite off putting. I think the issue is that the DSL needs to have a good balance between drive and volume on the Ultra Gain channel. I've heard across the board that the reverb is quite weak, but I've got the Hall of Fame if I really want to get the signal soaking wet. How does it sound with boosts and fuzz boxes up front? Though I've been a Mesa guy for years and dabbled with PRS Archon for a bit, there's something special about boosting a Marshall up front with a good OD. Have you done any mods to your DSL like the C19 mod that everyone seems to be into or is it pretty good to go out of the box?

    How about a comparison between the Orange Crush 35RT and the Marshall MG30 DFX?

    Looks like a great amp! The MG50DFX has a fan (and a 12" speaker) so do you think it would gig a lot better than this? I have a MG100HDFX and LOVE IT, but I want something lighter

      @thedavesimpson  5 років тому +1

      The 50 would gig better but sadly they don't sound that great. The 30 tends to start crapping out after about 30 minutes. The 50 is the weakest amp in the old MG catalog.

      @@thedavesimpson Hi Dave I know this is an old video and discussion. But I was wondering what you Don't like about the 50dfx? I just repaired one that someone was getting rid of, and it sounds okay. Nothing Inspiring, but just ok. Do you think a speaker change would help. It seems like a pretty generic speaker that came with it.

    I had the MG50DFX of that era and liked it a lot. Great cleans. The overdrive section was let down by the speaker though. Got fuzzy fast. Very little sweep for a good crunch sound. But plugged it into my 4x12 and it sounded great. Ended up replacing it with a Marshall Lead 100 as a solid state backup. Otherwise would still have it. Think it had a fan too.

    I wish the new 30 watt MGs had effects loops and I wish there was an external jack on the back to connect to another cabinet.

    i just found one on the side of the curb infront my apartment sorta beat up but it turns on. i don’t have a electric to test out if it works but i been wanting to get an electric for the longest time just don’t have any money, looks like a great practice/bedroom amp tho. hopefully i can get my hands across a guitar too so i can hear how it sounds myself. also left handed so finding an old guitar someone isnt using anymore is hard. i will update when i get a guitar lmao

    Question: Marshall amps sound amazing when you play them, but every Marshall i’ve ever owned or played sounds fuzzy, nasely and dry with absolutely no richness to it.. What’s the deal, man? Is the key to get “the” Marshall sound just to crank it and find the sweet spot?

    • @stuartmacdonald5361
      @stuartmacdonald5361 2 роки тому

      In my experience MG's are not the easiest amps to dial in. It can take a lot of time and effort to find that sweet spot.
