With the way he keeps saying things twice, I'm fully expecting him to say "I'm gonna go get the papers, get the papers."

Drove me nuts through the whole thing. It seems that more, and more speakers are repeating themselves like this.

I agree he's an interesting well informed speaker but his habit of repeating himself is distracting

That's a technique used by many teachers to emphasize key points.

"jellicoe should get credit for the victory..." This guy thinks the RN WON?!?!?!?! LOL! I hate to see what a defeat looks like to this guy! XD

Listen to the whole thing genius.
It was an operational defeat but a strategic victory. Britain could afford the losses but not the Germans.

Well, after Jutland...despite the German Press lauding the higher losses for the Royal Navy, Scheer wired the Kaiser and basically told him, "We can't face the Royal Navy like that or we'll be destroyed." The Grand Fleet was good to go after a few days, the High Seas Fleet licked their wounds for months. Not the Trafalgar Jellioce or Beatty was looking for, but the stranglehold wasn't broken.

You need to study the war some more before sharing your opinion.

If you want to see what defeat looks like, take a look at the High Seas Fleet. They saw the Grand Fleet, and ran away, never to come out again.

    " . . . when the Beatty family stopped suing people . . ."
The Mill of Hagiography grinds exceedingly slowly . . .
A great lecture and well worth my time. Thanks, National WW1 Museum and Memorial!

What's with the new fashion of completely siding with the Germans and only focusing on the questionable decisions of the British?
    Oh yes, it's 'edgy'.

I don't think that's fair the old interpretation is that Jutland was a tactical loss strategic victory for RN. If you look at the fleet movements the high seas fleet was a nats bollock of a huge defeat

On the topic of Blockade Runners, the Germans had a class of cargo submarines (one was even called the Deutschland) which was used to carry in critical supplies. They ended up investing more into commerce raider submarines then cargo submarines which was a key decision in the war. These merchant submarines were very profitable and easily cover the cost of the ship and then some with each visit to the US. This all went to hell when the US declared war on Germany.

They built two cargo merchant submersibles, converted to U boats. Any U boat is a commerce raider of it targets merchant shipping 😎

All that investment in these behemoths and so little testing of all the theories. Good talk but a tad irritating with the repetitions.

If you're a believer in capitalism, like I think this guy probably is, isn't a black market just an expression of capitalism; meaning that it is a response to government control of food distribution? And if capitalism is supposedly more efficient wouldn't the black market be more efficient than the system in place?

I take it you’re NOT a believer in capitalism? Have you discovered anything better that has t already been tested and proven murderously (literally) wrong?

More efficient at moving food to people willing and able to pay for it. Less efficient at deliberately feeding only what the war machine requires.
