It was probably last February or March when I heard Cardiacs for the first time, and I just really didn't get them at first. Loosefish Scapegrace is the song that changed that. I remember being in awe at how many different ideas could be smooshed together in one track, and not just sound good, but also be super catchy and memorable. This was the start of an obsession for me!
Yes, it was a saxophone you were hearing. That's Sarah, she was a core member of the original six-piece lineup and was also a prominent member of The Sea Nymphs, which is like the gentler version of Cardiacs.
I'm 67 now, and I was introduced to Cardiacs 6 years ago - I have in that time listened to virtually nothing else. Wish I had discovered them earlier so that I could've seen them live (which was a sight/sound to behold, apparently). IMO, the greatest British band since the Beatles.....
Lots of Tim's lyrics contain snippets of famous literature, poets, and hymns. This song for instance, steals some shakespeare with the "So I dissolve away, to be such stuff as dreams are made" line. And Tarred and Feathered ends with an excerpt of some obscure hymn. Of course, Tim takes things and molds them into his own abstract vision, much like his music. It's so cool to see someone on UA-cam who really understands how much of a genius Tim was! Here are some personal recommendations to really get a sense of Tim's diversity (often times lots of recommendations for reactions will tend to be skewed towards the more wacky and manic stuff, but I strongly feel that Tim's genius spanned so much more than that) Fanny - Spratley's Japs Come Back Clammy Lammy - Guns Veronica in Ecstacy - Tim Smith's Extra Special OceanLandWorld Maresnest -- on land and in the sea No Bright Side - Day is Gone EP Gina Lollabridgida - The Seaside Dinner Time - Garage Concerts Helen and Heaven - Heaven Born and Ever Bright Faster than snakes with a ball and a chain - One time release on a 'Greatest Hits' album Lilly Whites Party - The Sea Nymphs Made all Up - Ditzy Scene Bellyeye - Sing to God Ocean Shipwreck - Tim Smith's Extra Special OceanLandWorld Truth be told, I could go on and on, so I better stop there. Mad hatter he is.
He already did a Faster Than Snakes reaction, same day as this one. I've also put in a formal request for Big Ship and Lilly White's Party (live version) so those should be coming up in a couple weeks!
You should check out the album "Real Estate / Fake Inverno" by Sterbus. They're very influenced by Cardiacs and they got Cardiacs' drummer to sit in with them on drums for that album. Probably a good track to pick would be "Prosopopeye".
Great album! (Double). There are something like 20 musicians involved in that project (including Bob Leith, the last Cardiacs drummer, who flew out to Rome for the sessions - as you mention). Their new album is lovely, too. Let Your Garden Sleep In.
Foy! Goosegash! I sometimes think of it as "circus music". Bears riding bicycles. Another way to hear the more "jagged" (stocatto, I suppose) parts is as "classical music". The "classical covers" of his music I've heard on UA-cam all seem to work so well, it's as if the music was written for a string quartet (or whatever such rock group) right from the beginning. Gibber and Twitch, by Mozart, for instance: ua-cam.com/video/hACkgEVS794/v-deo.html
Your joy that I watched when repeating the last 45 seconds over and over . . . and over again . . . it truly WORTHY OF LAUDATION sir!

Fantastic song, your growing love and appreciation of cardiacs is truly great to see, keep em coming, there’s so much more fun waiting for you!
Possibly my very favourite Tim tune. He didn't write a bad one though.

Love the musical reference to Shepard Tone Tim embeds in this track
RIP Paul Ryder of Happy Mondays who died today at the age of 58. WAY too young. Amazing bass player.
Yeah, i was sad to hear that he’d died, a true legend of the madchester scene
Genius
Anyone else getting Bonzo Dog meets Syd Barrett with a sprinkling of Blur?
Cardiacs were actually a big inspiration for Blur, so I can see why you'd say that. This would've came out about a year before Blur formed.
