- The Queen has paid tribute to the "heroism, courage and sacrifice" of those who died in the D-Day landings.
She was joined by 16 world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, in Portsmouth to commemorate the 75th anniversary of history's largest combined land, air and naval operation.
Mr Trump, who was on the last day of his UK state visit, said D-Day "may have been the greatest battle ever".
Veterans of the landings in Normandy to liberate western Europe also attended.

The Queen was the only world leader that lived through it all. When she talks about D day it was happening then and now for her not just taking a walk in someone else shoes.
They are still just as respectable as the British or US soldier. That is, provided they weren’t some Nazi lunatic running death camps. For example, the Wehrmacht. They were fighting for not their leader, but what they saw as their country, family, and in the end had no choice.

Yeah it's me fine, but most of those countries were not in this operation. Except for India.
Most of those were colonized by imperial powers at that point anyways. They certainly contributed but many contributed under the banners of those empires.
These commemorations specifically mark the D-Day landings on 6th June 1944 and the following liberation of Europe pushing in from the Normandy coast, they aren't looking at both world wars or even the whole of World War II.
The Turkish army was fighting from the other direction in Europe and to my understanding did not take part in the D-Day landings. Turkey only declared war on the Axis powers in February 1945, almost a year after the D-Day landings had happened and only about two months before the war in Europe was finally over, and so no Turkish troops ever actually saw combat in World War II.
Indians and Mexicans would have been serving as part of the British and American forces respectively at that time and thus are presumably represented by the Union Jack and the Stars and Stripes as are those of all nations who fought in those armies. As distasteful as it may seem now India was still part of the British Empire until 1947 - it was not yet it's own independent nation with its own flag in 1944 unlike Australia, New Zealand and Canada which were and whose flags are thus represented. The 15,000 Mexicans serving in the US army did so because they'd been offered US citizenship, meaning that actually by the time they'd served they were effectively US citizens anyway.
China wasn't part of the D-Day landings or the liberation of Europe.
I presume the other flags shown either represent countries which directly took part in the D-Day landings and the liberation of Europe from that initial push, or flags of people from Europe who fought for their countries which had been free before the war and whose governments were in exile based in London (e.g. France, Belgium, Netherlands, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Norway, Greece, Luxembourg) and lastly those nations which were also liberated from that initial push from the D-Day landings - some of which will be the same as countries with governments in exile already mentioned. You will notice that Angela Merkel attended on behalf of Germany even though the German flag is not represented despite their country losing a huge number of soldiers due to the D-Day landings and the liberation of Europe, presumably since those actions specifically concerned the liberation of Europe from German occupation. I was very pleased to see that Mrs Merkel attended.
We specifically remember all who fought in both world wars, and indeed in all wars whichever side they fought on, on Armistice Day on 11th November each year. However, today is not Armistice Day.

@cultfigure 22 we also inspired much of their culture. also we colonised it(not that i am proud of it yet that is a fact) so if you are white, then you will likely be a descendent of the british. the spanish and portugese mainly colonised south and central america but you may have slight traces from there. i would also like to point out that many of the plans for the allied invasions were made by generals from Britain and its empire, and were then looked over by the supreme commander of the allied force- Eisenhower. also general montgomery fought in both WW1 and WW2, and has overshadowed Eisenhower in terms of battles won whilst in the position of a military leader.

We fought to liberate Western Europe from the Nazis, while Russia fought to liberate Eastern Europe, but when Russia liberated Eastern Europe from the Nazis, they kept those countries, and nobody went to liberate them from Russia and their brutal dictator Stalin. The plan was that the US and allied forces would liberate the west while Russia liberated the east, and then we'd meet up in Berlin. When we arrived in Berlin, weeks after Russia had already got there, our US General Patton was angered when he saw the millions of German women that had been raped by the Russian red army. He was also angered that Stalin was keeping all those eastern European countries he liberated from the Nazis. General Patton tried to get the Western European countries to join with the US and wage war on Stalin and free eastern Europe, but they all said no. Referring to eastern Europe Patton said 'They were liberated from one monster, but they are now in the hands of a worse monster" meaning Stalin. After the western European countries, and even our own US president at the time, didn't want to liberate eastern Europe from Stalin, General Patton decided to do it anyway. He decided to organize what was left of the German army, have them join US forces and wage war on the Russians. While Patton was in Berlin organizing his plan, he was involved in a minor car accident where a car pulled out in front of the one he was riding in. He was taken to the hospital and mysteriously died, which ended the liberation of eastern Europe. Decades later a Soviet defector to the US told us that Stalin had learned of General Patton's plan and staged the car accident, then had him taken to the hospital where he was poisoned. We can talk about D day and this and that, but it was a crime against humanity to have left eastern Europe under the oppressive rule of Stalin, when many of those countries such as Poland fought to help liberate Western Europe from the Nazis.
