As a 2020 SDGT owner: KTM 6th gear is an overdrive. The real top gear is 5th I now have mines flashed abd dyno tuned. If you think its fast stock, the tuned version is totally insane
Yamaha was doing this 30 years ago, 850 TDM.. and the late 80s TDR250 which was a cross over from Road/Mx which never had the chance to continue an evolution of the bike.
Having owned both of these (currently the GT), 6th gear is an overdrive on the GT. It's not happy pulling 6th until 80 mph. Motorways, in 5th, sub 80 mph, you can easily get 50-55 MPG out of the Duke.
@@bikerboi1983 Not ridden the R, but not surprised. Having come from inline 4's, I've had to retrain my head to run a gear lower for a given speed. 2nd for 30, 3rd for 40, etc. Love it though.

Now that the Super Duke GT "Gen2" has pretty much the exact same engine that the Super Duke R has, the top register in the higher revs has more power than the gen 1 engine had, the gen 1 engine was somewhat downtuned from the R engine. So for a V-twin the Super duke engine is very strong in the top compared to most other V-twin engines. So those extra horsepower combined with a lot more torque and even some kgs lighter than the S1000XR makes the Super Duke GT Gen 2 a faster bike than the BMW. Also the S1000XR even though better than before it still has those vibrations in motorway speed where you do not want them. It has become less obvious since they have added a lot more rubber mounting in the bars and pegs but it is still there and you do not have that in the same way with the Super Duke GT. Also the riding position on the GT is a slightly more aggressive which I like a lot more, less weight on your a$s and less windblast since you are leaning slightly more forward into the wind which is much more comfortable when touring. The only thing I think BMW does better than KTM is reliability, even though BMW still is a euro brand and does not have that awesome reliability of the Japanese bikes it is still somewhat better than KTM. I would feel more "safe" riding a BMW around Europe on a long trip than on a KTM that is just how it is, there is more problems on a KTM if you look on statistics than BMW. I think BMW is a bit more expensive on services than KTM though but I could be wrong about service costs between the two ? Personally I have had much more problems with KTM than on BMW, my friends as well. KTM for me, is more fun to ride on though PM. The 6th gear on the Super duke engine has always been kind of an overdrive gear, it is for very high speed cruising. Many times when going 60-70 mph (100-120km/h) I have found that the 6th gear on the Super Duke is useless, it runs better at that speed on 5th gear weirdly enough. Can't wait for the 1390GT.
Having owned the XR, I now see the beast that KTM is… wow!
The KTM has pretty wide ratio gearing. You can be doing 90-100 mph and in 6th gear, the big twin is just singing calm baritone.
I wonder how the XR goes against the 1290 SAS, cracking video
I would still get the XR, fit and finish, etc........
I think the S1000XR was in rainmode
I always admire the ktm , since I currently own one,
But now I need the SD .1290.
After this video ,I'm sold
Sport bikes made comfortable if one wish to ride longer distance!! Upright seating position with wide handlebar!!
Please please do the middle weights 750 Hornet GSX8S KTM790 TRIUMPH TRIDENT etc al
Come guys we need bragging rights at the pub
Two words. Simply Awesome!
Awesome, the ultimate real world A to B machines 🥰
The LC8 is unbeatable
That KTM is fast. The first 2 pulls the XR was cold, the red screen was screaming "not yet, not yet" good job KTM! What is the difference in price?
This exactly!! the motor will limit the power output to protect it. It was obvious. Third run was much closer. I would like to put my tuned 180 HP XR against the KTM
The GT will always fail at 6th gear roll on. Gearing is way too tall and 6th isn’t usable until you are silly speeds over 80mph. They do take some riding learning the gear ratios but they have so much character and are so rewarding.
I really wanted a SDGT, but the ADV ergonomics, for me personally, are just too good to give up that I just had to pick the Super Adventure instead. Oh no, I only get 160hp and extra torque for my STREET sport touring fun machine, what shame. haha Love these bikes.
There is no Replacement to Displacement
And it sounds better too! RELASE THE BEAST!
Lets no forget the KTM has 30 % more cubes than the XR. Triumph are doing the same with their ST
wow that orange swan, the torque stay alive with any condition ❤
Love it! Nice presentation. Is the SDGT geared the same as the SDR?
I’ve owned both at the same time. Gearing feels the same. But the SDGT is heavier with better wind protection.
@@kj385 Awesome. What a pair. That gearing is so tall, though! I have gone one tooth down on the countershaft of my SDR and she’s still really long legged. I use my SAS for sport touring and that works well, too. But I’d love to ride an SDGT.
It’s crazy how fast they are for what they are. I can attest to the XR personally. We were out for a large group ride a couple months ago and it was a very fast paced ride. We were on a long boring straight section and I started horsing around with a guy on a brand new XR (it was identical to the one in the test down to the red color even) and when he romped on it he absolutely just stomped a hole in my poor little Street Triple 765. 😂
Funny that my uncle has a triple black 22 plate one and my mt09 sp gen 3 kept pace with it
@@DucatiDale I ride with 3 MT09’s (none are SP’s but that’s just suspension stuff) and one of them is even the newest gen with the TFT dash and my Street Triple pulls on all three of them. Not hard but definitely pulls them. Maybe the BMW I played with had a Bren tune? I know he had a pipe but not sure what else because that was the first and only time I’ve met him. They were visiting from another state so he’s not local.
@@cfltitan yeah the st has a better top end than the mt09 probably slower to 60-100mph being a fair bit down on torque but Upto 145mph indicated I kept pace with the xr then we both let off
@@DucatiDale that’s damn impressive. Those bikes are crazy for being a “touring” type bike. That engine is a work of art though. I ride with a couple S1000RR’s and they’re just mind blowing fast.
@@DucatiDale The Street Triples R(116hp and 57lb-ft) and MT-09's(119hp and 68.6lb-ft) are pretty similar, especially given the Triumph is lighter.
The Street Triple RS has 129HP though, either way the Triumph is a refined track day weapon where the MT is just a brute, even with the SP lol I mean no offense!
i just prefer the sound of the bmw over the ktm- even if the duke is a bit faster. probably can’t go wrong either way though!
