Tales Of Heartache In Troubled Yorkshire Seaside Town 🇬🇧

- Scarborough, once grand seaside town - the first true resort town of its kind in the UK - has fallen on tough times in recent decades. The rise of the package holiday has slowed the flow of visitors and social decline has been evident for decades. Viewers have told me it is Yorkshire's WORST seaside town, possibly the worst seaside town in the UK!
I met up with @wanderingturnip and we gave the town the once over. From the Grand Hotel on the seafront to the supposed roughest estate in Scarborough we met the locals and found out what life is really like in 2023. I also uncover the locations of Scarborough's darkest secret...
Is this really another broken British seaside town or is there any hope?

Alcohol and drugs destroyed these people. Not Scarborough.
A common trait of the losers here is to blame Scarborough rather than themselves.
@@jonnydoeson5562 Same in Blackpool mate. Toothless alcoholics and junkies complaining but never self reflecting.
@@kevfit4333 they’re just f’ing losers who have no concept of self responsibility. They must be middle aged with absolutely nothing to show for themselves other than sitting in the park in the middle of a weekday drunk off their arses screaming nonsense at each other. Absolutely pathetic and embarrassing. It would be fine if they left it there but they go about trying to drag the town and everyone else down with them. I’d like to see their reasoning if you offered to give them a train ticket so they could leave this place if it’s the reason for their troubles…
They destroy Scarborough.

asking the towns jobless what the job market is like LMAO
Of course, the unemployed/jobless do provide an important insight into understanding the job market. It could be the case that there aren't many jobs locally, or maybe the unemployed don't have the skills to be employed in the available jobs, in which case efforts could be made to upskill the unemployed. Understanding the job market cannot be arrived at solely from the point of view of those who are in work. Yours is part of the elitist mentality (those without, do not count) that's causing some of the problems up and down this country.
@@abctransparency5 aye its mostly coz they cant be arsed tho lets be real. and i know plenty of lazy sods who sponge the system coz they cant be arsed, while i am out working all day. and im not Elitist i worked bloody hard to get where i am , nobody helped me, and it boils my blood that people are so entitled nowadays, the world does not OWE nothing.
You’re asking the wrong people. Lived here for 10 years and it’s an amazing place. Ask the people that walk marine drive every morning for the sunrise. Ask the ladies that do beach yoga. Ask the fishermen that have breakfast in lookout every day. Ask the sea swimmers that brave the cold water because it gives them a buzz. Don’t base your opinion on a minority that don’t embrace the town.
these people didn't even exist i the 90s. everyone seemed classier back then. and the place now feels like the money has left
To be fair.... he chose the worst areas. Scarbados can be brill 😀If the council wasn't skint from putting up Pride stuff, some people might get more help 🤕a place to exist, Jobs?
Over a 100 bordered up shops in this small Seaside town since 2019 😐
I dont agree. Tourism had declined very markedly in the last 25 years..not a destination..lots of high st closure. Whitby...Ramshell are really deprived. Not a job destination for youth seeking employment....its bad
Lived here 40 years and this is not my experience at all. You did find a certain type of people to interview. 😂

I’ve lived there. In baracliffe too. It’s really not bad. Just the usual smackheads but in general scarbs is alright. Still jobs and money around.
Scarborough is fantastic. It's beautiful and quiet. If you interview drunks on the street, they are obviously going to say it's all sh**. If you interview ordinary middle class people, they are going to be far more positive.
Well that's obvs people with money anywhere will always be more positive.

Such a shame to interview endless people with personal issues. I live down the coast in Bridlington. People often go to live at the seaside to begin a new life...but sometimes simply bring their previous issues with them, and then sadly blame the town as being responsible for their poor life choices. Scarborough is a great town with genuinely nice facilities for those who can be bothered to look and engage in something other than sitting in a pub. Great gardens such as Peasholm Park, a lovely Spa complex. Open top buses, two cliff lifts, a wonderful harbour and fishing heritage, old cobbled streets...etc...Just thought i would even up this one sided view of a lovely town. Interview a range of people not a segment of people hand picked that reflect your agenda. It is harder to pick something up than to kick something down......
I had exactly the same thoughts. (The comments are more interesting than the video)
I have to agree with your comment
Very true. I used to work in substance misuse and many of the afflicted believed that if they moved away their problems would be seen in the rear view mirror ergo solved-doing a 'geographical' as the Americans term it. It goes without saying how that pans out.
My thoughts are that they say what they believe, you say what you believe, and the truth lies in the middle. It's a wildly complex issue with multitudes of different variables and situations
The problem is that you describe tourists locations that take a day to explore. Many of the new spots like the water park are too expensive for locals to go to. The problems are much deeper than that. The town is/was just ran very poorly. You have 3rd or 4th generation of people living on benefits that don't know any better. I moved out of Scarborough 10yrs ago and the only sensible educational course for adult student was to become a graphic designer. How many graphic designers does a town that is made of falling apart hotels and restaurants need? There are nice areas but that is about 10% of the town and only some people can afford to live or go out there. The rest is sadly as it is shown in this video. The problem is that the town never changed from the times when it was a thriving destination and that already was 40 or 50yrs ago. Those people are old or dead now and because nothing happened to update the town it simply died off and there is no future for young people.
Long live Scarbados ☮️ it’s a beautiful place and nowhere near as bad as people make out!
Rumour spawns rumour and UA-cam and Facebook are the vehicles for spreading them further. You can bet your life that many who are doing this very thing have never even been to Scarborough at all, but still rubbish it to other folk. Folk on here who describe it as a 'shit hole' are probably right in a funny sort of way - any place is a 'shit hole' if you've got no job and no money - and somewhere within that is the root of all the rumours. The place is a seaside town that's fallen out of fashion -just like Blackpool and others on the South coast and other places - but a 'Shit-Hole' it is not.
They just drink all day then moan that they're bored😂
I like it too, but 'Scarbados' is a stupid name - just as Barrybados is. I know there's 'Skeg Vegas' but at least that has some logic behind it because of it having so many arcades. But these nicknames for resorts are best reserved for when they have an actual resemblance to a famous place, in another part of the world - such as Bournemouth being "Britain's Miami" or Aberystwyth being "The Biarritz of Wales".
Why do you only interview drug addicts, drunks and dossers ?
Rough town my arse, rough people perhaps !
I was there a month ago on a Saturday night and it was heaving and vibrant...thanks to the weather.

Rishi Sunak and his chums need to watch this and start pulling their heads out of their arses. This country's gone to the dogs.

Scarborough is a nice town with the advantage of been by the seaside. I am from Derbyshire and always found the Tykes to be friendly. It's much cheaper than Brighton probably half the cost for beer, coffee and meals I prefer it to say Skeggie, or Cleethorpes. Brid is OK aswell, but there is more to do in Scarborouth . It's worth a visit and a stay.
In this part of the world Whitby is by far the best seaside town
There’s something fascinating about Victorian seaside towns
Amazing buildings and architecture.
❤scarborough, the town centre is like everywhere else in this once beautiful country.
No it’s not. It’s a shithole. York, where I live, is not a shithole.
This country Is far nicer than it was back then
As a Midlander, with family near Scarb. I'd trade instantly, tbh. Yes, it's had (much) better days, but there's plenty going for it, even now. Only thing stopping me is the likelyhood of employment up there. The wider area is also a goldmine for exploration and natural beauty. But, granted, you'd need transport to see it. In contrast, the West Mids is an overbuilt, overpopulated, sprawling mess, with less and less to inspire as the years roll on. Your point about the relativity of what defines "rough" was interesting. I'm always hearing people from obviously comfortable backgrounds, talk about coming from "rough areas" which makes me laugh. Sometimes, you're more likely to be started on indiscriminately in a small-town, suburban place with boredom being the main currency. Whereas in a big inner city, the violence is seemingly a lot more gang-oriented, and - ironically - you're more likely to be ignored.
Good post. You make a lot of sense regarding the gang culture in cities like Brum. Most people aren't on their radar at all and given they live in a self-made, seemingly perpetual dog eat dog universe, I would imagine they spend a lot of their time looking over their shoulders, pre-occupied with their own welfare. I agree that you're more likely to fall victim to a drunken thug wanting to make a name for himself in some backwater town. It also seems to be largely governed by age with younger generations having goods on their person that are attractive to their criminally orientated equivalents. Outside of top of the range cars, that is. Even Tom Cruise with an entourage had his car robbed in Brum-ironically, when filming Mission Impossible.
They call that a "rough" neighborhood? LOL Ridiculous. Show how people exaggerate so much these days.
That second woman you spoke to is one of the many vagrants who have flooded our town, begging in shop doorways. The Grand has been neglected for years and got worse since it was filled with Illegals. The number of drug and alcohol addicts who have migrated to the town is one of the main reasons for its demise. Im Scarborian born and bred as were many generations of my family before and agree that the town is not what it was, but when you flood it with crap some of it ends up sticking
Ok boomer

Dave. The wandering turnip. He's absolutely brilliant!
Scarborough used to be a great place to go, especially for the Easter weekend when thousands of bikers and scooters would descend on the town. It was great for us West Yorkshire boys to come for a weekend and end of Amateur Rugby League season do's. Since the early 2000s it's gradually declined and is really sad to see 😢
ALL seaside towns are 'rough' to an extent. There is a facade that hides a lot.
The way you spoke of the Grand and describing it as being 'run down'and then only showing the lovely well kept parts was quite amusing! I took the kids up to Scarborough a few years ago and we stayed at the Grand - The room we were given was what I'd imagine to have been on a par with Rudolph Hess's at Spandau. It was on the side of the steps and actually below step level - No windows so no 'view'.
Another thing that drags seaside towns down is the strange migration of certain elements of society that flock to these places from the inland towns and cities. (As witnessed in this clip) Gotta feel for that elite athlete/fashonista who's only option for trainers was JD.
Whitby is the same nice on the surface but underneath not a nice place

It's good to see your evaluation of Scarbados was favourable at the end of the video. I can assure you that Scarborough was not almost flattened during WW2. Did you not notice the plethora of Victorian buildings here and there? It was targeted in WW1 from the sea and the odd random building over a wide area was destroyed, including the barrack building at the castle.
I was about to say the same! This video is just clickbait full of fake facts Wandering Turnips was much more fair

From what i can see on your video the streets are very clean and all the railings painted and not rusty, council must do a good job maintaining the place
At the expense of Whitby is what ive heard…is Scarborough the favourite spoiled child ?
They really try to make it nice good memories, we have with the kids 🏖🥰
@@griswald7156You have it absolutely the wrong way around. Whitby succeeds at the detriment of Scarborough and always has. It was always overrepresented in the council and the whiny councillors always put roadblocks in to stop Scarborough from ever being funded for projects or anything. As a result whitby is definitely the wealthier of the two and doing a lot better socially.
The problem is that councils in the UK like to house a lot of unemployed benefit dwellers in the seaside resorts where there is a notorious lack of jobs. They needed to be housed somewhere where there are factories etc to get these people out working in, but instead they leave them sat around getting dependant on drink or drugs.
Scarborough is a truly lovely place, its the alchies and junkies that create the dark cloud, they create the violence because they've nothing better to do.
Scarborough didn't change, the kind of people living and roaming around there did - and no, i dont mean illegal immigrants because ive never seen any there despite what onr or two on here are trying to insinuate.

@@griswald7156 you don't think there are such things as factories and everything is made by magic wand! There are plenty of factories where I live, Hull has them, Grimsby has them, the country can't function without factories and manufacturing plants. You need to wake up to the real world!

Love Scarborough. Such happy, happy childhood memories and beyond. Squirrels in the park waiting for food, hilltop walks. Arcades, ice cream, seagulls. The boat thing in the park lake. Beautiful buildings. That walk along the front. Fish n chips. The sea! The beach. The drive down into Scarborough. Love it. I have just read heaps of the comments and I have to agree with them. You are talking to down and out people and are hardly going to get anything but a negative response. I noticed that on another of your recent vlogs. You mentioned a bad homeless and drug problem, but another vlogger I watch just loved the place. In fact I just emailed them yesterday to clarify this. I doubt there is a town in the world right not that doesn't have drug and homeless issues. If you based your residency on this, you would never find the perfect place to reside. I think you need to get opinions for a variety of types of residents of a town, before you get a true representation of the place.
Good comment, No one wants to listen to the opinions of losers, except perhaps other losers.
I use to go to Scarborough every year for the North British conference,
A great few days spent there .
I visited Scarborough early June for a black metal festival at The Spa and I was pleasantly surprised! The beach was great for walking my dogs on. Dog owners are super respectful of space for other dog walkers which was a shock to me coming from Norfolk! My two are reactive and Norfolk is full of the Joules welly brigade who think it’s fine to let their dogs with no recall run up to mine and scare them 🙄 I took them down to South Bay on the Monday and they ran around for two hours without seeing another living creature, heaven for them 🙂 My only complaint is how much they hate motorhomes, yet refuse to define what one is. I got a parking ticket for parking a “motorhome” in the wrong place, even though my vehicle doesn’t comply with any legal definition of a motorhome, and was told I couldn’t appeal. Litterpicked a lay-by on the edge of town before I headed back south and removed two binbags of rubbish left by taxi drivers and day trippers, yet somehow I’m the problem?
Its a hidden tax. The same as all of the other parking tickets and fines etc. They generate a lot of money. I'm guessing it was a council ticket rather than private?

Very interesting , the first holiday I had was at Scarborough exactly 70 years ago , aged 4 and have not been back since, living in a friend's house in Grosvenor Road, the detail is fading at that tender age , but recall the road in a steep gorge and the bridge you are walking over bringing it all back with the blue railings - and The Grand of course .It also was heaving with holidaymakers like us and the weather was beautiful for a fortnight !.I'm afraid it is just one of many seaside resorts in the same decline .
Was in Scarborough back in June 2003 as a 15 year old from Norway. It was a great class trip at the time. Had nothing to fear when roaming the streets back then and we wandered all over.

Looks lovely to be honest
It's so easy to find the characters interviewed on this video.... it looks like most were people that came to the town for their own reasons and have not found what they are looking for. Perhaps these people should be asked why they chose to leave their home towns and cities.

Racist bigot!
Just to mention Scarborough harbour wasn’t flattened in WW2 - many children we’re evacuated to Scarborough.
Your conclusions at the end of the video are a fair summing up.
There are good and bad in all towns especially with drugs and alcohol.
Problems arise when people with issues from other Northern towns, having probably had a nice holiday in Scarborough, leave their crap from their old lives and bring their crap to Scarborough.
The locals born and bred have their own issues with mental health too.
I really hope people find a little bit of happiness.❤
The problem is because of the type of people you interact with. They are the problem, people are not going to spend money as tourists when they are having to deal with these sorts of people. The worst thing is that a lot of these sorts of people are moving from town to town as they do this kills the tourism industry in that particular town. We have become a nation of misfits . It's really sad but that's the truth of the matter.
Exactly, my partner had a weekend in Scarborough last September which isn't cheap to do anymore even for one night, anyway the place was as charming as it always until we went to the Wetherspoons in the town that night for a couple of drinks before moving on for a meal and when.we left there was a number of loud and intoxicated people on the street, possible smackheads but they were intimidating!
Yes exactly lol, the people who were asked about Scarborough, without being judgemental: looked like the kind of people who were bringing its reputation down. I read somewhere years ago: that a lot of benefit claimants, drug addicts, alcoholics etc: moved to seaside towns, and that's probably why some towns have gone downhill.
Are you surprised that this happens when more concern is placed on the plight of the mythical noble refugee than on our own people and culture? These people are victims of a war of England that cowards like you cant even bring yourself to mention.
@@poshgentleman559 it's very difficult not to be judgemental when you see how damaged these people are. It's very sad that society seems to have given up on these people and cuts in social services doesn't help. If they had the funds thrown at them on a par with the money we spend on Illegal immigrants (which is £1,000 a day per person) minimum then they would have a better chance of turning their lives around. Our culture has suffered enough through the woke culture that currently exists and it would seem the powers that be won't be happy until the British culture is none existent. This country has been ruined by adapting our own culture to embrace others and their differences in religion it's a joke to be honest. When people adopt a country as their new home they should also embrace the culture of the country of choice and not expect it to alter to accommodate their wants and needs. It's bankrupting us and making the indigenous people turn racist and I think it's really gone too far. The indigenous people of this country have no rights and it's getting worse.

Hardly an objective view of Scarborough. Perhaps these were the only people you could find to interview during the day. Most normal residents would be at work. The woman who said the town was bad because you only had one sports shop to choose from for trainers was priceless.
Well it says everything about her doesn’t it. She had to really kick that brain cell into gear when he asked her the question.
I don't dress in "Sportswear," but even I can name 2: Sports Direct and King of Trainers. Of course, there is TK Maxx as well. Like most towns, the Internet has reduced trade and the number of shops has fallen over several years.
@@sphericalearth1205 I judge my towns on how many places there are where I can buy trainers.
@@user-dd6cz5qd3d the narrative he wanted to portray was that of his clickbait thumbnail. Everyone “interviewed” in this video was part of the same gang of drunks and losers - about 6 of them - who make our town look like crap. (Except the 3 no. Off Vicky Pollards who were dossing around outside the pub at 1am on a weekday)…
A beautiful place , nice video Wendal
love the videos man, it's the skater kid you met in Coventry and I was wondering if you are bringing the video out? ❤
Hey mate. That video will be out in 2 weeks, thanks for helping out 🙏
@@WendallExplores no worries mate 👍, thank you :)
Scarborough is no worse than any other seaside town , it could do with a decent cinema and more transportation links but it’s worth a visit
first time viewer here, you're good at this- cheers
Brilliant as always
THE WEF WILL BE PLEASED EVERTHING IS CRUMBLING ,,,LOOKS LIKE THE PLANN WORKING
Whole video is Bollox and the pair of them do not know what they are talking about. We visit and stay in the town virtually every month and have done so for 25+ years, yes it has areas and "people" that are rough and ready but the town is in no way unique in that respect and there are a lot of other towns and cities in the Uk that are much much worse.
We said we thought it was a decent place 🤷♂️
The people interviewed in the video were that gang who hang around the back of the town hall scaring people and getting drunk in the middle of the day.
1/2 the video is spent talking crap about WW2 German air raids and interviewing all the down and outs.
@@ericsmallman1904 I liked the bit about ww2 - it’s a defining moment in Scarborough’s history. Interviewing the town drunks and those fatties at the end of dean road is a bit of a slap in the face though. Te town is extremely vibrant and has a diverse array of people and families who are passionate about it. This lot on here are just losers and they’re not representative of the town at all.
You can literally go anywhere in uk and find people who will moan about it, but Scarborough is a amazing place. Yes it's getting worse at the same rate as every town in UK,
That reminds me I've got to book nye there...
Hello to Wandering Turnip, your channel was recommended after I watched some videos on his channel.
It was shelled in World War 1, not World War 11.
How's that??
World war 11? But we haven't even had 3 yet! Seriously yes it was indeed bombarded by German cruisers in WW1.
@@leeboy26 Wow I didn't realise that there was this kind of naval conflict off the British coast at that time. It's a genuine surprise.
It’s all the Wessies & Benefits Vermin who move to Scarbados who make it what it is !!!
Scarborough is absolutely brilliant. This is so biased and negative. I go most weekends on my own and sometimes also with my daughter. It has loads going on for people from all walks of life who want different experiences. Interviewing people with mental health and suffering from substance abuse isnt representative at all of this town. North and South bay both have loads going on. Open air threatre. Peaseholme park. Castle. Beaches. Arcades. Sealife centre. The grand has some amazing views and is being renovated. I guess it boils down to your own perspective and mindset. Everytown has its negatives.
It could be so beautiful! Heartbreaking!
Don’t worry , it’ll be full of doctors , engineers , accountants in no time , young men who will integrate and make Britain better 👍
Already is the grand hotel is full of em
@@stevelufc64 , oh no . What a stunning hotel 🥲😫
It already is and also has willing locals to act as guides
Scarborough is rich in history, with its castle perched high above the North and South Bays, and a town which is proud to be Britain's first seaside resort! We're proud of our story which has lead to millions of people visiting every year...
including illegals
His videos are designed to make anywhere he films look horrible !! The clown who made the video has done it with many places ! He makes everywhere he films look like a Hell hole ! He only interviews the homeless and druggies and not ordinary people and only shows the worst parts of the town he is filming ! Different towns SAME FORMULA ! He reads a guide book for 3 minutes and spouts a lot of rubbish like saying Scarborough was badly bombed in WWII !!! A Total Plonker !
Historically this was a holiday resort for miners and similar who took their day or week, depending on what they could afford. Income was seasonal, like Blackpool, Morecambe and the likes. Those people then went to Benidorm on package tours. These places then died
My family is from Morecambe and it now has the same problems. Including a Grand Hotel
enjoy your videos...it nice to learn some history of the places
Im surprised there is no Sports Direct.
Love the videos, keep up the good work.
Imagine that Grand Hotel back in the day!!! Amazing.
I’m sure there is a sports direct if you look hard enough 🤣
There’s a sports direct it’s the people you interviewed who are on another planet 😂
Sports direct opposite the train station
@deetsrogue Rating the town on the amount of sport shops 😂
unfortunately there is
Drink and drugs have ruined society
Great and interesting video thankyou 😀
My Nan and Grandad used to take me to Scarborough in the 90s when I was a little kid. I remember water slides and a cable car with a dinosaur park. Also a really good scary ghost house on the seafront. At the end they give you a warning” if you are elderly or have heart problems go left , if you’re brave go right” I chickened out and took a left. And a real guy masked up chased me out with a chainsaw. You run to the end of the corridor burst through the doors and you’re on the street with every laughing at you. It’s was great!
… you certainly found a few randoms .. but like to say , you looked hard for them . Scarborough is really booming and the people that love know what the problems are 😜
Isn’t there good and bad in every place? I live in Malvern which is a lovely place but if you look hard enough I’m sure you will find people that disagree with that statement. Life is what you make of itxx
I live near Malvern and yes life is what you make of it, but on our spacious, well maintained council estate a few people chose to behave like pigs and still blame everyone else for it.
i love watching wandering turnips channel he really is so positive and happy chappy and he really has a love for chimmneys and stone brick walls.
Lived here since 1995.. started in a rehab..! Yes it has its share of problems...but no more than any other sea side town..but the true locals are among the best people in the world.
I bet the gold casket has a different angle now
It’s funny, but this vid actually wanted to make me visit.
Respect to you… great skills 👍👍👍
YT recommended your channel to me. Canny video. I had a little chuckle over the hard cut from an amusement arcade to a graveyard. That appealed to my dark sense of humour. Subsscribed. :)
Glad to hear someone else can laugh at the gallows 🫡
The amusement arcade featured is in Whitby. 😂
