My stepfathers niece taught me to throw an entire cabbage in the freezer whole, then thaw it on a plate in the refrigerator, the leaves will just pull off, for stuffing the leaves.
This works great, but I have found that it does require some preplanning - it takes about 3 days for the cabbage to freeze entirely and also 3 days to thaw in the refrigerator
Where have I been while you have been collecting 250K subscribers? Not here, but I should have been. This old lady loves this young lady. You make me relive those wonderful days of so much busy-ness before I turned 77. I still grow my own tomatoes, garlic, cucumbers and peppers to have a reason to get my hands in the soil. However, my long solo road tent camping trips ended when I was 73 on my grand finale to Jasper, Alberta, Canada from Seattle. I will be back here for your enthusiasm for everything and projects to do at home.
Hello Kathy! It sounds as if we are kindred spirits, and my have you had some wonderful adventures. Canning, growing things, and simple family and farm pleasures is where my joy is found. Thank you for such lovely words!
This is too kind of you! I wish I could be more timely with posting, and I so appreciative your patience with me. I am so grateful to have my family, you said it. Happy Spring, sweet friend!
Your talk about family and neighbors really touched me...I lost my Wife the day before Thanksgiving 2022...and each day seems hollow...but there is still a reason to be living...and your Dad is a great veteran...thank him for his service...
I love to hear you talk about your parents and to see you and your dad together. My daddy passed 5 1/2 years ago and I miss him so very much still. I struggle, still, almost every day. To hear you say your dad was going to fly down and y’all would drive back, my heart melted. I know you already do but cherish every moment no matter how small it may seem. Thank you so much for sharing this video especially. My daddy was also a military officer. I was born on base. I miss him so. Thanks again! 💜🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽. Such a beautiful family! 💜
Hello sweet friend. You are a fellow daddy's girl, and one day, I too will have just our memories. It's sobering, but I do live with that reality (though you'll never be ready when the time comes). I know that I will be rocked to the core when he passes. Whew, I'm tearing up now. That is why my ultimate hope (and perhaps yours too) is that death is a transition, not the end and we will be reunited in glory. Thank you for sharing the sweet memories of you and your daddy. You were well loved and THAT is a experience not every little girl gets to have! >>hugs
@@BecomingaFarmGirl and I am tearing up now. He was the country boy. I was the city girl. Little did I know that country runs deep and lies dormant sometimes. My garden saved my life and every time I go out, I can feel his laughter because neither he nor I could have called this one. Maybe he knew but I did not. Now, I couldn’t be without the garden. I feel my closest to God and my Daddy, when I’m in the garden. It’s where I have my most intimate conversations and thoughts with them both. Though missing my daddy is overwhelming more often than not, seeing other daddy’s girl interact with their dads doesn’t make me sad or envious. It makes me feel so full to know there are other little girls, at heart, who will know what I know and feel the love I still yet feel, even in his absence. And yes we will meet again. Thank you for your kind words. And more than that, thank you for the hugs. 🥰💜🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽.
Dear C- I'm going to crush you a bit here, so sorry! OJ loses vitamin C when exposed to heat. But I love all the rest of the recipes, grocery list, how to, etc. You do so much to keep us excited about being a farm girl! Thank you!
Hi friend! You are fine and very much correct that vitamin C is a heat sensitive vitamin that looses significantly more of its nutrition than other shelf stable recipes. Luckily, what were mostly after is the taste and it feeling like an occasional weekend treat because OJ isn’t something we have all of the time. I’m glad you shared this, and I believe the kind way you stated it was to be helpful to me (and others)!
Your videos are so wholesome. Loved seeing those previous moments with your family and Ed. Also when your day was in the recliner, his reaction was priceless! Keep doing what you're doing!
Trista! Girl, its always good to see your comment! Haha, yes, it's my favorite game because I am always so thrilled to get a good bargain. I love the look on their faces. I just love, love, LOVE thrifting!
Loved the baked sweet potato/carrot muffins. I added an egg for extra protein, a handful of pepitas for extra nutrition and used some frozen pumpkin I had instead of sweet potato. Note the write up in the newsletter doesn't quite match the video, mentioning coconut sugar and almond milk. No biggie. Delightful. VERY excited to try the Orange sauce. Definitely going to try making that this weekend.
Quick tip to avoid burning your fingers when doing the cabbage. Instead of boiling, freeze your cabbages and then take it out and let it thaw and it will soften without boiling…
THANK YOU, Nadine! As I've read the comments you and one other person shared this INCREDIBLE hack (and now I'm sharing it as I reply to others). Next time you drive down I-95, you should stop in Dortches, NC and go to Smith’s Red & White. They have the best homemade country sausages that are well loved in Eastern NC and the south in general. Love thrifting. I bought two Haute House sofas $200 for both. Looked on line one costs 10,000 the other $8,000. The lady told me they were worth thousands and thousands. She moved back to Mexico from Canada. You did really good with your thrifted finds. Looks great.

Your dad is hilarious! I'll admit I'm skeptical of Peeps for s'mores, since they always taste stale right out of the pack to me, but I might be tempted to try the marshmallow fluff with whatever my kids have left after their history diorama project (an annual tradition in our homeschool co-op.)
Here's a chocolate tip.....When putting chocolate into molds, pick up the trays a few inches off counter and drop a few times after filling. This will even out the bars and remove air bubbles for a nicer end product and a smooth back. Hope this helps.
Oooh, I like that idea!!!! Thank you! Now that I have the molds, I'm certain that I'm going to want to gift a few bars and would want them to look a bit more presentable. This is such a good tip!!!! Thank you, truly!!!
I'm so glad you decided to stay and give us great ideas and let us breathe in your fabulous personality. :) My kids and I have always hit the after sale. Always had enough chocolate on hand for cookies and we were famous for chocolate fondue parties. My kids are now adults and the g babies get excited for fondue party time.
Hey Susan! Lady, I'm so glad you're already hip to this trick. I love post holiday shopping to the point that I dare not get anything that I know will be marked down in the days after whatever holiday. The price you'll pay is night and day for not "following a calendar". You built such sweet memories for your children and now, with your grand babies! Beautiful!!!!
Good luck on your canning journey! I can lots of fruit and now I’m using the pressure cooker and making stews! It’s so delicious and you know what is in your food!
Hi Melissa! Congrats on taking an important step towards a skillset that will separate you from the average consumer. The ability to take advantage of price when seasonal foods or low, or stock up on clearance items, or be able to make your own broths, soups, and other pantry meal starter items is incredibly satisfying. Don't overwhelm yourself. Each year I slowly built my jar inventory and zeroed in on what I wanted more of in my pantry that I actually used. Keep me posted!
Thank you!!! I love cabbage and this recipe is so useful when it comes to using up ingredients. I just finished replying to another comment that gave me the tip to freeze the cabbage whole so that the leaves will fall off when it defrosts! I learn so much from the comments. Thank you friend!
You are AMAZING! I grew up in the country in Florida and I tell you the things I am learning from you iare beyond great! So my word for you is AMAZING! I live in the Middle East now and I’m trying to get all my stuff together for living a self sufficient grow your own can your own kinda life like you when we move to our new home that’s being built! Thanks a million times over for everything you are sharing and teaching us!
Ohoooo, those sweet potato muffins with some sunflower seeds would be delicious. We stopped at that Buc-ees when we went to Florida last summer. Going back in June.
Shelia, you've got the right idea, I could totally add some nuts. Buc-ees is wild! You've got to 'see' it to believe a place like that exists. It's the best price on gas that's for sure! South of the Border is even more of a ghost town!
You are an excellent storyteller and the pictures add a personal touch. Keep up the videos learning so much about prepping and homesteading.❤ Thank you!
Aww, thank you so much! I appreciate that you don't mind me veering off the topic a bit to share the random things that are meaningful to me in my life! Thank you for such kind words!
It sounds like you and your parents are in nice places, and the commute also seems pretty nice too. Appreciate what you've got. When we were kids we went to visit our grandparents in Florida every summer. Our grandfather would go out every morning (often with us along) in his boat to go fishing, and then Grandmother would cook up the catch for dinner. That's where I acquired my taste for Southern fried catfish, just the way you cooked it up. You made my mouth water! Every year my wife used to buy a package of every variety of Peeps, and there seemed to be new varieties every year! Too sweet for me. I love that idea of repurposing chocolate rabbits. The price of chocolate is expected to go up for a while yet, so this may remain the best way to buy chocolate going forward. Furniture has almost no resale value so the only way to get your money's worth is to buy used. Leather and wood can usually be reconditioned and will last a lifetime. Those are great thrift buys! I used to work at a big Goodwill store and they really don't know how to price anything. My wife got a bunch of useful kitchen utensils there for pennies.
Hello friend! Truly, what I value so much is the people we live next to. my townhouse neighbors really add to my life in ways that are hard to explain and, the day that we move will be bitter-sweet because I see these folks nearly every day. You said it best, "appreciate what you've got." It sounds like you grew up with folks that knew the secret to the god life. My dad is originally from Louisiana and, even though he married a northern woman, we grew up eating lots of fried Catfish! I just love the thrifty tips you shared--no truer words my friend!
Thanks for your warm videos. You’ve suggested the “commute” between you and your parents can be quite nice. Especially when they end with warm greetings. I’ve missed this since I moved to California thirty years ago. Only recently I’ve moved back to Ohio, now living across the road from my sisters who each live in their own homes, next door to each other. It’s now very easy and enjoyable to help each other out.
I just love every video you create! I am always learning something new! Love that chair! Loved seeing your dad and his friend and your brother! You have a beautiful family! You are just amazing with all the delicious food you make and can and all the things you do!
❤ loved the chat! Canning tips awesome! Naming vehicles is a thing. My girl is Ethel.. Old Ranger was little pup. Plow truck was big dog.😊 Tried your muffins & froze some dough too. Thank you for sharing!
Ethel! Oh I love that name!!! Yes, cars are part of the family, especially because we hang onto ours for decades at a time. I'm so glad you tried the muffins!
I haven't and I need to! This year I'm planting onions for the first time in my GreenStalk planters. You are not the first person who has shared this with me so I'm thinking I should get a move on it!
Definitely necessary for the recipe in my family. You want the sauce to cook down a bit and mingle with the meat juice, but we don't cook the meat filling before stuffing and baking.
I was totally LOLing when your dad started dancing in the background. Love your channel. Randomly found you. I’m starting my “farm girl” lifestyle while living in a townhouse too. That’s for all the information
I select the freshest produce from my garden and yard and preserve. Seeds give you the biggest bang for your buck and if you save seeds, you only have to buy them once. I get fresh eggs from my chickens too. You can also regrow some things from your produce...garlic, potatoes, celery, onions, lettuce. I can squeeze a nickel til the 🦬💩
Please record (if you can) when you start your seedlings and green stalks and any tips on keeping out pests(racoons, groundhogs, squirrels, bunnies, deer, etc)☺
Hi friend! I have that video coming next. It’s and overview of seeds I’ve started indoors, planted directly in my planter or starts I’ve transplanted. ☺️
HI, Cassandra! Thanks for the April grocery guide! I took you up on frozen fruits that were in my freezer and canned them up for quick morning smoothies. I have some OJ in my freezer that could also be jarred up. Over the coming summer break, I plan to really build up my canned pantry. Carrots have been on sale at Aldi, and so have mushrooms. I love the marinated mushroom recipe in the USDA's Complete Book of Home Canning. Welcome to the home stretch of school! See you next month, or sooner! Take care. PS I've had 2 Volkswagens that I named- Walter my HS car and Rosie, a red convertible. My gray car could be a Gray Goose-LOL
Buckee's is so fun! My sister told me about them a few years ago and we've been to both of the ones in Tennessee, Crossville and Sevierville. I just love the candied almonds. Like you I'm a military kid, my dad was in the Army. We did 3 tours in Germany so those almonds are a blast from the past for me.
Wow!! What an amazing catch! I loved watching the video of your dad and Mr. Ed❤ That's cool that you were visiting them in Florida. That's where I live, but my parents live in central Florida so I still have to travel 6hrs to visit them. I love the relationship you share with your parents. It's so nice meeting your brother too! 🙏🙂
Hello Anna! Isn't Mr. Ed just the best?! We just love him and his family so much. My folks are in northern FL, and over the years, we've learned to make the distance work. And yes, I'm so happy my brother wasn't camera shy this time! Happy Spring! :)
@Cassandra, this was a great pantry chat and I really enjoyed it! Loved seeing your Mom, Dad and meeting your brother. He looks just like Dad. You are very blessed to be able to share with them. I loved all the recipes that you shared as well. I have been dehydrating everything that I get my hands on. Rough days are on the horizon, that's a given. Thank you for sharing all the great ideas with us, God bless and keep all the great ideas coming!
Hi Kathy! It's good to 'see' you as well! I'm so happy you are stocking your pantry and preserving everything you can find. Knowing the value of being able to preserve food truly gives you a leg up at the grocery store. Take good care!
Tracie, you will love batching cabbage rolls to have on hand. Girl, I just got a comment from someone else that told me you can freeze the cabbage whole and then defrost it in the fridge and the leaves will fall right off without doing the whole pot of hot water like I did. Genius, right? I'm gonna try it that way next time!
@@BecomingaFarmGirl now that sounds like an amazing tip. I have a head of cabbage that has been in the fridge for a few weeks I didn’t use for what I was going to, and we all know we don’t throw away food around here 😀
I love your videos! Thank you for always sharing your tips and tricks to get great quality on food and other items for little $$. Always looking forward to the next one!
Hello friend! Aww, I'm soo happy to hear this. I've got to get better at posting a bit sooner, but work has been hectic lately. There are still ways to stretch your dollar at the grocery store, and I love sharing (and learning) with others! Happy spring!
Cassadra, I can't wait to try the cauliflower and cabbage recipe. We are on a keto diet. This will give us a welcome change. These are like mini documentaries. They are so full of great information. Loved the story of your Dad and his friend. Loved that you took your Mom to an Airbnb. It was fun to find out how you named your truck. My husband and I got two baby Americano chicks, last year. One is silver and one is gold. I named them Sterling and Goldie. The name's weren't quite right. We decided that my Husband would name one of them. He decided to name the Silver one Silverado. It is the perfect name for the chick. You bring great joy and plenty of good ideas to your Channel. Thank you!
Hi Alice! You will love the cabbage recipe. Be sure to season up your filling as you like it. Since dad was in town and he tries to eat mostly Keto, they were the perfect recipe. Also, I have received so many comments on this video about NOT boiling the cabbage, but instead sticking the whole head in the freezer, then taking it out and letting it thaw out in the fridge and the leaves will fall right out without burning your finger tips (like you saw me do). Isn't that clever? Thought I'd pass that along. My dad and Mr. Ed are total best friends and I'm telling you, he's such a good guy. Dad totally stole the show and named the truck for us, but it totally fit. SILVERADO? Oh, I LOVE that name! See---you know when you know! Thank you for such kind words!
It is soooooo good! I'm so glad I can bottle it up without the preservatives, added salt, and who knows what else that are in the store brands. It's soo good!
Hello friend! That's how I try to keep it. Even with just doing a few small projects each month, you'd be surprised how it starts to make a difference. I am SO HAPPY to hear it's helping you out. Happy Spring!
Yum the catfish looked delicious and your muffins are always over the top. You go girl! Love the chair. I have used a leather color product before with amazing results. Happy your father flew up to make the long trip extra special and safe. Fun time with Mom to do girl stuff. Thanks Cassandra.
Donna! Always good to see you! Wasn't that recliner a steal? That leather balm really did wonders! Mom and I had a fun time. She flys out this weekend!
Well…great. Now I need to see if I can still find peeps, lol. Homemade marshmallow fluff for the win 🏆. Love me some catfish, that’s what my Dad and I used to fish for. He’s passed now so thank you for the memories. 😘
Hello friend! Yup, homemade marshmallow fluff! It'll be a fun treat once we kick start our bon fires again. My dad is from Louisiana and even though he married a northern lady, we grew up eating it. Oooh, it was so good! I know you had a good papa, too!
Yes, I so needed your energy to jump start my monthly plans. I have to make your orange sauce. I have made marmalade, canned halo oranges, and did a mix of oranges, apples and pears for a mixed fruit on the shelf.
You are going to love the orange sauce! It's excellent on chicken, fish, turkey, vegetables, you name it! The list of what you've already preserved is impressive! Way to go, girl!
My friend, you said it best. I am so thankful for my family. Having a core group of folks is the biggest blessing anyone could have. I hope that you have experienced the same :)

Good luck on your canning journey! I can lots of fruit and now I’m using the pressure cooker and making stews! It’s so delicious and you know what is in your food!
@@LoisJessop hey thanks for the encouragement , can I ask you where did you purchase your canning pot ?
The cabbage dish is golabki (pronounced gawumpki) a Polish dish. ☺
Thank you!!! I love cabbage and this recipe is so useful when it comes to using up ingredients. I just finished replying to another comment that gave me the tip to freeze the cabbage whole so that the leaves will fall off when it defrosts! I learn so much from the comments. Thank you friend!
The true meaning of Easter and Christmas is never going to change.... Hallelujah!
This was a great video! Loved the intro to other family members and the stories of your dad and his friend.
How did I not know this about the juice concentrate??!! Game changer
Gołąbki!!! (Cabbage rolls) Yum!!!
You can tenderize the though leaf stem parts with a meat tenderizer/mallet!!!
Say what?! Oh this makes so much sense!!! Thank you for sharing. This will be waaaay easier than boiling it!
I so wish I had a neighbour like you.
When you're setting the chocolate in the molds, bang them on the counter top and it will remove all of the air bubbles.
Oh this is a super valuable trick! Thank you for sharing. I'll do that for next time!
She called me Honey 😊 Stop making me blush. 🃏
You said kale twice ;D
😊 😂
I’m becoming not just a farm girl, but a southern farm girl. 😃
I just love every video you create! I am always learning something new! Love that chair! Loved seeing your dad and his friend and your brother! You have a beautiful family! You are just amazing with all the delicious food you make and can and all the things you do!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR VIDEOS!!! I love that you share so much FABULOUS INFORMATION that is SO useful!!! I so look forward to them all!!!
Can't wait to make all the recipes! Yum!
As always, what you share is pure gold! Honestly! Thanks so much for including the unusual things as filleting the caught fish! Love it!!
Love the fishing adventure ❤
I go the break bleeder and saver top because of your videos! I love the no electricity vacuum sealing
Have you tried growing ginger in your garden . I highly recommend it’s the best tasting ginger you will ever have!
I haven't and I need to! This year I'm planting onions for the first time in my GreenStalk planters. You are not the first person who has shared this with me so I'm thinking I should get a move on it!
Love cabbage rolls...my mom used to just pour sauce over them before baking. YUM!!!
Definitely necessary for the recipe in my family. You want the sauce to cook down a bit and mingle with the meat juice, but we don't cook the meat filling before stuffing and baking.
Woot, woot! Cabbage rolls for the win! You’re right, they are sooo tasty!
I was totally LOLing when your dad started dancing in the background. Love your channel. Randomly found you. I’m starting my “farm girl” lifestyle while living in a townhouse too. That’s for all the information
Isn't dad crazy? I can't take him anywhere!
I love that you name your cars/trucks, we do that too 😁
Gosh your channel is so wholesome and fun. Your family is amazing.
I just sent a request for a monthly grocery guide. I also am a new subie. I love your content. So very informative.
I can squeeze a nickel til the 🦬💩
Haha, love your thrifty ways, Lynn! And yes, I have to get better at seed saving.
Cassandra! I appreciate these chats and all the knowledge you share. Thank you once again and always.
You are more than welcome, my friend!
You have done all the ground work for us. Thank you so much for sharing, you are a blessing to many households.
Hi Katie! Aww, thank you so much. I'm happy to pass along what I'm learning because its been a game changer for us. Thank you for such kind words!
If you lean your break leader on the counter and push you use less force
You are Amazing my friend. Thank you 😊
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and ricipe plus family. That's God! Praying for you and your family!
It's my pleasure, sweet friend!
We just bought a 2014 Ford F150. Its blue and we love it!!
Love your channel. Love your energy. White Ford 150. Monster, red journey fireball. White town & country snowball.
Girl!! I just found you!! Farmgirl love!!!!
Grey wolf!! I love it!!
When dad rattled that name out, Tre and I looked at each other like, "Yup, that's the name!"
Ive seen salmon slow roasted with orange and fennel that ive been meaning to try. Will try chicken thighs too!
Linda, the combination is amazing! It's a quick meal that its my default when its fennel season!
Wow! I will be making that marshmallow fluff every chance I get now, thanks!
Just found your channel, and i love it!!! Your wneegy us refreshing!
Hello sweet friend. I only wish that I could post them more timely. There are still ways to live a good life by making the most of what you've got!
Hello fellow military friend! Yes, Buc-ees is certainly set up for travelers and they do have the best candied almonds!
Wow!! What an amazing catch! I loved watching the video of your dad and Mr. Ed❤
That's cool that you were visiting them in Florida.
@@BecomingaFarmGirl ❤️❤️❤️
You’re a farm girl and also a great storyteller. Loved the fishing buddies!
Hello Sonia! Aww, thank you so much. And yes, my dad and Ed are the cutest pair of fishing buddies you eva did see!
That chair! Amazing! ❤️🙏🏻Val C
Girl this is so smart! Live in the x season and preserve for the future. Blessings Abundant
You said it best, my friend! It feels like a covert game, because so many folks don't do this and pay full prices for everything.
I can’t wait to put some of those cabbage rolls in the freezer
Thank you for the new video! I can't find the recipe for the orange sauce. Where is it? It looks great.
I can smell the orange sauce from here 😂. That may be my favorite. All the recipes look amazing! Thanks for sharing.
It is soooooo good! I'm so glad I can bottle it up without the preservatives, added salt, and who knows what else that are in the store brands. It's soo good!
Such a nice pic of dad and Mr. Ed
Isn't it! I have so many of them from there almost weekly trips together. Those two are such good friends.
Omgosh girl, I see so much of your dad in your brother lol Thanks for another great pantry chat :)
I know right?! Those two look like brothers :)
You make it all look so easy. You have helped me with menus so much!! Thank you!!
@@BecomingaFarmGirl I am so proud for you two.Enjoy every minute.Enjoyed your video.
My first car was a green 59 Ford Fairlane 4door. I called it the Green Tureen bc it rolled us inside like soup.
This made me laugh out loud!!! Perfect name, my friend, "The Green Turtle". This is actually the name of a popular MD restaurant franchise :)
Thanks so much for your help with getting access to the April Grocery Guide, Cassandra! I love your channel and love the Grocery Guides!
No problem, my friend!
You are amazing!! I love your videos!!!
Awww, thank you lady. I'm sure you're amazing too!
What a gorgeous family. So blessed. ❤
My friend, you said it best. I am so thankful for my family. Having a core group of folks is the biggest blessing anyone could have. I hope that you have experienced the same :)
@@BecomingaFarmGirl oh they are the best. I live only 10mins away from my mum and dad and both my sisters. Family dinner every Wednesday night!
