- then her dad died and the household couldn't afford to keep its staff AND the expected lifestyle of [whatever lesser nobility Tremaine was]
- keeping up appearances, in a household occupied solely by women, was VITAL: any of the girls could be blackmailed, extorted, or otherwise entrapped were anyone - thieves, creeps, etc - to learn the realities of their very vulnerable living situation
- gainful employment was not a legal option for any of the girls nor Tremaine (unless they wanted to be publicly shunned, etc) so marrying off daughters ASAP was essential lest the financial situation force their hand...
- (& none of these women would have the skills nor street smarts to survive as working class - ella MIGHT but she'd run herself into the ground trying to keep the girls together and fed and safe... and if cindy's assumed as being 16-18 years old, her step-sisters are similarly aged or younger)
- okay so economic realities aside, tremaine is emotionally abusive and neglectful (and actively enabling of her daughters treating ella in the same)

- cindy might quietly hope for a match of her own but, like, her family DEPENDS on her (which, yes, is also tremaine's gaslighting speaking but her sisters are legit disaster children) and tremaine would NEVER let her go before her sisters

so, like, ella made the best of her circumstances: she worked DANG hard for no reward, she kept her thoughts to herself (and animals she would be talking to, just to keep herself sane, EVEN IF THEY WEREN'T CAPABLE OF TALKING BACK) and hoped for a night off from looking after her family home, haunted by the happy memories of her early childhood, and to maybe find work or a match that would get her away from it all (whether in the form of Ana or Dru getting hitched, some merchant who remembered her father and could sponsor the girls for the season so tremaine could properly get wedding bells underway).
no, ella couldn't fight - what good would it do, in her circumstanced? enlisting in the armed forces might be a paycheck but would leave her (& fam) EVEN MORE VULNERABLE THAN THEY ALREADY WERE. meeting her family with violence would only worsen her situation AND break her internal code of remaining kind to spite her dire straits (that code and mantra being one of the few things in her life she CAN be in control of). plus she'd, like, be thrown in gaol &/or out on the streets.
Cindy isn't a scholar but she's never had the OPPORTUNITY to be academic. there is no one to value or even notice any cleverness done on her part - her life is too busy with chores and belittlement to risk being starved in punishment for ACTUALLY TALKING BACK TO HER FAMILY (she DOES show off some of the scathing witticisms she's saved up on Lucifer so we know she's at least THINKING sarcastically at everyone, even if voicing it is a huge risk).
so, like, ESPECIALLY for the era she was written for, Cinderella is HELLA valid. un(der)paid, unappreciated, overworked, holding out through it all because SURVIVING means that there could be a better tomorrow, a future where she might THRIVE. ella's white and [heteromarried] and dainty, yeah, but ella's arguably the MOST relatable of the Disney princesses, beyond the lens of scorn employed in the direction of housewife-adjacent character types.
So the courage in kindness, in the face of hostility, is a form of empowerment that shouldn't be looked down upon: for a lot of people, in history AND TODAY, it's an accessible, private sort of resistance that can see a person through dark days & lonely nights.

@@kishinumaayumi No, not replaceable. They can’t hire someone to do your job role anymore because then it would just be firing and not redundancy. They also give you a “redundancy package” where they give you some extra pay to compensate for your job not existing anymore
