My stand-ins were not distributed randomly only in X/Z, but also in Y, so that some were above and some were below my ground plane. I redid this several times, and came out with the same result each time.

Great video! I was wondering if you might know why none of my instances get drawn in the viewport. The only way I can visualize them right now is one big bounding box, but I'd like to see the individual instances so that I can compose my shot properly. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I was wondering do you have to make the surface live or something to get the plants sitting on a uneven surface?
In your tabs go to "Generate" -----> Make Paintable
