    This was one of your best reviews Lachlan! The comparisons of the Empys and Susvaras were incredibly deep and well thought out. I think anyone looking to purchase any of these is much more well informed after watching this. You mentioned the Verite Open but you might want to give the VC a chance as well. Many people receive the VC more highly than VO and also treat the VC as the best closed backs on the market.

      Thanks Ace! I do intend to give both the VO and VC a try. I always assume that open cans compete most directly with other open cans, but I definitely take your point. Cheers!

    Hi, Lachlan (aka 'Passion for Sound'): I really like your review of the Meze 'ELITE' and the way in which you go about comparing its sound to that of its predecessor, the 'EMPYREAN.' Comparing headphones is, by its nature, a very personal experience. I think you do an exemplary job of defining the differences you hear between and amongst the various headphones you cover in this review. Your approach to comparing headphones is, to me, exquisitely fair and balanced - you take the time to point out the many subtle differences which distinguish one make and design of headphone from another. You are truly a top-notch reviewer. You leave it up to us to decide what headphone we might prefer, because you encourage us to THINK about all the possibilities.
    I own the Meze ELITE and I am absolutely in love with it - it IS my headphone of choice now. Its all-around performance and musicality is hard to beat - and it reveals bad recordings for what they are: *bad recordings*. When you listen to really well-done recordings of all genres, from electronica to thumping-bass dance tracks all across the musical spectrum to vocals, rock, pop, jazz and even classical, all of it comes through excitingly on the ELITE. I also own a FOCAL CLEAR MG and the Japanese-made FINAL D-8000 Pro Edition headphones, both of which are also quite impressive-sounding in their own right.
    There is one more comment I want to add: *HOW* WE HEAR MUSIC OVER OUR HEADPHONES has a LOT to do with the EQUIPMENT we are using UPSTREAM of the 'phones themselves! I have recently become aware of the revival of an old-school DAC technology (R2R or LADDER DACS), which for the longest time have been overshadowed by the now ubiquitous chip-based Sigma-Delta DACS, which now make up nearly 100% of all DACS out there, with the exception of the dCS 'Bartok' RING DAC and the CHORD 'DAVE' - M-SCALER combo. Now all of these DACS are getting some very heavy competition from the HOLO AUDIO 'MAY' KTE DAC, a top-flight R2R DAC, which I now own. This DAC, when operated in its *NOS*, or Non-Over-Sampling, mode, is something you have to hear. It is a game-changer in how we are hearing DIGITAL audio. I will leave it at that for now, other than to say that listening to the Holo Audio MAY KTE R2R DAC over the MEZE ELITE headphones is a sonic revelation, which makes even ordinary Red-Book CDs sound so much more ANALOG and musical in quality! The MAY is best used with a CD TRANSPORT to get the most from CDs. The MAY DAC is also well-equipped to accept all forms of streaming audio inputs and formats, and can even decode true SACD audio natively, rather than as most DACS do, by first converting it to PCM - and THEN to analog.

    Happy to see that you've made a comparison of the Elite and Empyrean! Listening over the Empyrean after I've sold my motorbike to get these 5 months ago.;)) I've watched your review over the Empyrean over and over again along with Zeos' before pulling the trigger on a used Empyrean.
    Based on what you've said, I would definitely need a listening session with the Elite to see if I can hear much difference, but based on what you've said, I will stick with the Empyrean for now for sure, because the extra rumble from the base is very much welcome because the amount of EDM music I'm listening to and the games I'm playing need the extra boom.;))

    Had a chance to listen to both the Elite and Empyrean side by side, and I honestly preferred the original Empyrean. The major warmth is has gives it a unique and very pleasant sound, even the vocals has a warm tonal quality which is very pleasing. The Elite doesn't have that, and sounded kind of boring in comparison, even though it's more neutral. That said, the comfort and the design of both are still some of the best I've ever tried, and other headphone manufacturers need to take notes.

      @@PassionforSound the Elite offers something quite rare in a flagship headphone, technicality & musicality. It strikes such a good balance between these 2 attributes.
      Technically the Susvara is slightly better but some people still find it too bright in the top end & it needs quite a bit of current to power & drive.
      The Elite is much easier to power too.
      And if people keep going on about resolution & detail, there are 30-40 year old Stax headphones that retrieve more detail than any planar.

    I agree with you on burn-in... I bought a pair of HE6 SEv2 and they were terrible out of the box. Once I gave them a week or so burn in ~20 hours of play... It started to loosen up and the base filled in which was before a roll-off and slightly hollow sound. It also wasn't psychological burn in because I would a-b-c several of my headphones and could easily detect the problem early on.

    Thank you so much for this amazing review. I had the opportunity to try out the Elite for myself yesterday and rewatched this review and was in awe of how well you captured and described the nuances of the sound and what the Elite represents. I will add that I was initially really disappointed with the Elite when paired with a Shanling EA5 alone. The headphone sounded a bit lazy and the separation was so exaggerated that the band members didn’t seem like they were playing as a band and that they had all just rolled out of the bed. When we added a fairly large tube amp (don’t recall the name) after the EA5, it fixed most of the problems, but I am not looking for such a space consuming setup. I then tried the Elite with a Shanling M9 DAP. The sound was pretty great but lacked a bit of punch, highs and energy. We then added a Cayin C9 into the mix and that’s when I felt like I got to experience the sound that you had so articulately described in the video. I am new to the hobby so am looking for my first set of equipment. I am now pretty much sold on the Elite and the Cayin C9 but do not want to get a DAP that might become unusable in a couple years when it becomes unsupported and cannot be updated. Do you have any DAC recommendations to pair with the Elite and the Cayin C9? Any reason why I should steer away from the C9? While portability is not that import to me, I do have very limited desktop space, so the small size of it is definitely a huge plus for me. Thanks for everything! PS - I also got to test the silver cable v the copper so will be leaving a message under that video as well.

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  2 роки тому +1

      So glad to hear that my descriptions translate well!
      As for a potential setup for you, a DAC like the EarMen Tradutto could work well if you're limited on space. I'm in the process of reviewing it at the moment, but it's very nice. The Schiit Bifrost 2 is another excellent option, but a little bigger overall. I'd choose the Bifrost 2 for pure sound quality, but the Tradutto is also very good and has a few more features.

    • @Guitarmon8
      @Guitarmon8 2 роки тому +1

      Thank you!! I will check out those DACs. Any thoughts on the Cayin C9 or other amp I should look into? I really loved the 4 sound options on the C9 (tube/solid state and class A/AB combos) with elite. All very usable and enjoyable in their own right, but can’t help thinking whether I can find something I like better for the price (USD2000) as I just started testing amps.

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  2 роки тому +1

      I haven't tried the C9, but it looks like a pretty cool amp. For the same money (or less) you could get a great amp like a Burson Soloist 3XP or a Sparkos Labs Aries (base version), but I can't say how they'll compare, they're much larger and they don't have the multiple modes.

      The tunings of these two are vastly different - well beyond what an amp could/should change. The Susvaras definitely benefit from the right amp pairing, but will never match the bass from the Elites - they have their own strengths though

    I am also worried about many reviews stating that the resolution on the LCD-5s are objectively better…? Is this your experience? Are the LCD 5s that much better that it would matter in a mixing/mastering/music production context?
    Thanks for your time!

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  Рік тому +1

      I certainly don't feel like the LCD-5s are more resolving. I think their tuning just focuses you more on the details.
      As for mixing/mastering with Elites, they're a little more coloured in their tuning, but the LCD-5 has its own colourations with the rolled-off bass and midrange emphasis so I actually think you'd need to adapt a bit to either headphone. The LCD-5 is closer to a monitor sound though so I think that's why it's a more obvious mixing/mastering choice.
      In other words, I would be happy using either for mixing/mastering and think both need some adaptation to ensure the mix sounds right on other gear.

I understand you consider the susvara better than the elite or empyreans, from what you say in the video. But i wonder what about comparing the susvara and the utopia, more so given tbe utopia has some qualities in between the susvara and empyrean or elite. And when i say the best i mean regarding enjoyment and being able to follow all parts and instruments....like being in a real concert at tbe front rows. Or are they both very close and not worth changing one for the other if one owns one if them?. As an aside, and after watching this and some other of your videos regarding those headphones i mention, i wonder how one headphone can be more enjoyable and musical (thecempyrean or thevelite), but have less detail than the other...i would say that the one presenting the most details would sound as in real life, and that ought to be the more enjoyable and musical....otherwise those details maybe have to be somewhat artificial....i'd appreciate if you vould clarify this to me....thanks again for such excellent and sincere reviews.

      That's a hard one to answer about the Utopia vs Susvara because I don't own the Utopia anymore. What I can tell you is that the Susvara is wider and less deep while the Utopia presents more depth and less width (if that changes anything for you). The other thing is that the Susvara is a flatter overall response which generally results in better and more even coverage of all frequencies coming from an orchestra so I'm guessing the Susvara would be my choice, but I can't say for certain. Have you checked my Susvara and Utopia reviews? They might provide further clarity that I'm forgetting.
      As for enjoyment of less detailed headphones, it's all about tonality. For critical or focussed listening, detail can be important, but when I'm just looking to enjoy music without being absolutely focussed on it, I find the tonality of the headphone is the biggest factor. Many detail-oriented headphones are tuned a bit brighter than what I think of as natural so my favourites are often a little smoother and warmer.

      @@PassionforSound Thank you for your response. Yes i viewed your reviews of the utopia and susvara. But if i recall correctly the utopia was made when you had not listened the susvara yet. In theutopia obne you said it was thebest or one of the best, andin the susvara more or less similar, or that it was almost perfect. And that the uopia was a sort of middle ground between the empyrean and the susvara leaning more to the empyrean, with a romantic tonality....THat's why i wanted a more direct comparison between the two. So if you do not have theutopia, i understand you have sold it in the end, since i think you said in the utopia review you owned it, and you were hesitating in keeping the clear, selling the empyrean for the elite, and also somethign about you were thinking maube selling the susvara as well... What has happened in the end? maybe you sold the utopia and kept the susvara? Any comments on what was your thought process fro whatever yu decided to keep and sell?. SO i wonder if the susvara is the one more neutral ( imean natural sounding as in real life) or more colored for detail, if else the emyrean or elite are the more natural, or that warmish characteristic is another form or coloration, and the same with the utopia. I heard the utopia only, and i find it uncanny on the realism of thevoices and details....but i suspect it is maybe a bit unnatural on some way....becasue when i listen to natural sounds (I think, maybe wrongly, thiscould be a way to know how realistic the reproduction is, since we all know how natural sounds are, instead of instruments or certainconcert which we dont exactly know....it was a sound on the internet site about testing headphones ( i do notrecall now but i may look it up) about a knocking on a wooden door...the utopia sounded a tiny bit too woody to be natural maybe... I wonder then if the susvara is a much better headphone for natural sounding, or if the emyrean or elite are...THey are so expensive it has to be just one, if any,...not all three...Thanks again

      You're right about the Utopia review happening before the Susvara review so that does make it a bit tricky. I think your summary is really accurate though in that the Utopia is wonderful for vocal music, but a little bit coloured in general which can be both good and bad depending on the recording, genre, etc.
      If you're looking for the more natural/neutral option, the Susvara is it IMO. That's the reason I kept the Susvara and sold the Utopias - the Susvara is more versatile and great with just about everything if you have a good amp for it. You don't need a speaker amp, but I find it sounds best with amps that have a full and weighty sound. A good tube amp can be wonderful or something like the Sparkos Labs Aries.

    • @PassionforSound

      I don't believe so. It has sufficient power, but its sound is quite flat and unengaging. For a headphone on the level of the Susvara, I think it's false economy to use an amp below something like the Sparkos Labs Aries, Burson Soloist GT, GS-X Mini/Mk2, etc.

    Your reviews are always a joy to listen to. Both informative and entertaining. However, in regards to the Elite & Susvara comparison you said the comfort difference was around 5%. By the way, I own a TT2 (and MS), what adapter do you normally use to connect the Meze upgrade balanced cable to the TT2? Nice Review again :)
    I just invested the most I have ever paid for a piece of Hi-fi in the form of a (second hand) DTS Bartok.
    This transformed the Empyrean's into a much more technically proficient; detailed headphone. You expect that of course with a DAC at that silly price but it shows how capable they can be. I can hear each and every instrument so clearly (separation) without losing any of that lovely fun, warm meaty sound. It's very impressive. They have never sounded so good.
    That said; I am still looking for a second pair of headphones on a slightly higher technical level (once my Bartok is paid off) and am interested in these Elite's...especially as they retain most of the character of the Empy's that we know and love.
    Incidentally the guy I bought the Bartok from had the Utopia's and I also found them occasionally a little harsh in the treble. I also found them less comfortable to wear.
    I am using a Feliks Audio Euphoria AE Tube as a Headphone Amp as these Meze's seem to love tubes.

I'm looking to find a good DAC/Amp to use for the headphones, I understand your current choice would be the TT2, which is just currently out of reach, but something I can look forward to in the future as well as the M-Scaler. I was looking at the DO200 and the HO200 combo mainly because I'm a big fan of the appearance, and also your review in saying you'd likely purchase the combo over the D90/A90 combo in terms of value. Do you think the DO200/HO200 would be a sufficient pairing for the Elite? I'm willing to spend more if the combo won't deliver everything the headphones are capable of. What else would you recommend as a great starting DAC/Amp for the Elites?

If you want a matched stack though, you'd have to go for something like the Soloist 3XP and Composer from Burson. If you're happy to mismatch the stack, some good DAC options are the Chord Qutest, SMSL DO200 or Schiit Bifrost 2. For the amps, I'd go for the Rebel Amp, Singxer SA-1 or Burson Soloist 3XP.

    This may seem like a crazy ask but I am stuck as to what headphone or IEM to get next. I am thinking for headphone it may be the Meze Elite and for IEM the FIR Radon 6. I have tried multiple high end headphones but no high end IEM's. Could you possibly compare your experience with high end headphones Vs high end IEMs? I have an Xduoo XD05 pro and Chord mojo 2 the XD05 pro being my favourite. I guess one of my concerns would be the FIR Radon 6 with the XD05 pro do you think the audible hiss would come through on those? I know you have tried everything I have mentiond and I would really appreciate your opinion. I understand you may not have tried these combinations together.

      I actually own and love both of the headphones and IEMs you're considering. I can't comment on the Rn6 with the XD-05 Pro, but I can tell you that they sound magic with the Mojo 2. I'd probably go with the Mojo 2 for the IEMs and save the XD-05 Pro for the headphones.
      As for the experience of using both, the IEMs won't give you the soundstage size of the headphones, but are equivalently as good in every other way and might be even better tuned than the Elites.

I really really love the Empyrean’s for the music they match well with, however for the music they don’t it’s been a bit of a let down. But something you said in your review, there is no perfect headphone and you will always compromise this for that has helped finalize my decision. Rather than replacing the Empyreans for a “perfect” headphone I’m going to keep them and add a more detailed focused headphone to my mix and just switch between the 2 as appropriate for the music. For detailed listening I am going with the Diana V2 from Abyss, I would of gone HIFIman HE1000V2 but I do not like the way HIFIman headphones feel on my face. Passionate review. But I don't get one thing. You say that Meze claims that this is an entirely new headphone. But then you say the build is the same except for the color. You say it's a "totally different headphone" at 2:55. Then you say the driver has been redesigned 9:15, but then at 11:08 you say the driver is also just subtly, subtly different. My guess is that Meze are lying about this being a "completely new headphone". Just like they got the branding all wrong. This is not an Empyrean they say, but their very own box says, literally, "Empyrean Elite". This is a totally new headphone, they say, but they just changed the color and subtly adjusted the driver. WTH... the amateurism of the company is enough to put one off.

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  3 роки тому +6

      Sorry if it got a bit unclear. Let me step it out...
      Meze are branding it as a whole new model
      The chassis, headband design, etc. are all identical except the colour
      The driver is a new design using the original Empyrean principles with some tweaks
      The initial print run of the cases DO say Empyrean Elite, but this was either an error or has been changed from a marketing/branding perspective since the initial print run. Reproducing all those cases would be way too expensive and really not a big deal anyway
      So, it's a newly designed headphone building on a strong foundation of the Empyrean, but improving on it.
      Meze are definitely not an amateurish company either - they're one of the most professional headphone manufacturers I've come across in terms of their communications, the R&D behind their products, the build quality, etc. One printing error or late change of branding doesn't represent them at all.

    I don't understand reviewers' notion that hearing every orchestral instrument is a good thing. It's absolutely fake, and can only be done because of technology. If you sit in the front row at a concert hall there is no way you will hear every instrument. Worse, you'll hear individuals near you totally ruining the balance of string sections. Classical music is meant to be heard at a distance. That's the difference between acoustic and electric/electronic music. The hall is a part of the experience.

    • @PassionforSound

      @@PassionforSound Hi Lachlan, my setup is: Innuos Zenith mk3 digital transport > Innuos USB Reclocker > Chord M Scaler > Chord TT2 > Elac Adante Speakers. Your excellent videos helped push me over the line with the Chord products and certainly no regrets there!
      With the Empyreans, there’s a thinness and I guess a distance, I often don’t get the depth. I know there is nothing wrong with the headphones because other tracks sound phenomenal. Thriller sounds amazing for one but lesser recordings can really suffer. I think I’ve got a pretty revealing system and while it’s certainly true that poor recordings suffer to some degree when played through the Elacs, it’s only really relative to the unbelievable sound I get from others. It never becomes like I don’t want to listen. With the Empyreans i do have music I just don’t want to listen to.

      Billionaires?! Lol, that’s a bit extreme.
      In the UK, the Elite & the Utopia are identical in price (£3699) and the Utopia came out around 5-6 years ago.
      As far as I know, the most expensive headphone (that doesn’t have Diamonds on it) is the HiFiMan Shangri-La Sr at over £15,000.
      That’s very ambitious from a manufacturer that is notorious for it’s poor QC.
      The £51,000 Sennheiser Orpheus HE1 is a headphone system, the headphones cannot be bought separately.
