    Edit: As much as I'd love to have my purchase justified by a reviewer I trust, I appreciate your honest review. I don't have "golden ears" and they sound phenomenal to me so it's not like I'm going to return them now. I think they perfectly round out my current collection of cans.

    I got these one year ago this month during the intense covid lock downs. There were no shows or anywhere to test tons of different headphones. I was able to demo them at home for a few weeks from my local dealer. Those few weeks gave me enough to know I would be very happy with them. Sitting here 1 year later and still very happy and use them constantly. Ended up upgrading my DAC and amp this past year and finally have my PC audio set up complete. Friends who aren't in the hobby are blown away how good they are. Think I'll stick with them for awhile although I am dying for a chance to hear the Susvara soon! If they are good enough guess it's time to start saving :)
    While they list at $3,000 I ended up paying about 75% of that for a new pair which made it more palatable. Still a lot of money for headphones though lol!

    Nice review! I have had mine for about 6 months now and got a great deal from my local HiFi store.
    Ex-demo (as new) for the local equivalent of US$2700. For me they are the best cans I have owned and I like them much better than the LCD-3s or HD800s which are the other “flagships” I have spent most time listening to. To my ears they are rich, full and detailed without being fatiguing (I am very sensitive to zingy treble), easy to listen to for hours on end and do my music justice across every genre. Comfort and build is impeccable.
    I have them hooked up to a Topping Dx7/A90 stack and see no need to upgrade or experiment further in the headphone domain… (remind me of this in 12 months time…)

    Thomas & Stereo’s recent video opens a discussion on a topic I’ve been pondering for quite some time now-“more” is not necessarily better for everyone. I find the Empys a headphone to not get technical, to not be wow’d, but to rather sink in and just relax. Nothing sounds bad. Pop, electronica, rap, and hip hop sounds fun. If anyone wants a headphone that does “more”, these aren’t it. If someone’s looking for a headphone to have fun and relax, I find these check that box.
    Back to Thomas’ point, “more” might not be better, and whatever you’re budget might be, everything within that budget should be fair game, retail price notwithstanding. “Everything sounds good” seems to be the running theme from friends who have tried them. One even went as far to say, “It makes badly recorded music sound good.”
    Great review! Thought it was well articulated and detailed. 👍

  • @ocramidajzj
    @ocramidajzj 3 роки тому +36

    Been in this audiophile hobby for well over 30 years and many of the Empyrean reviews, including yours are weirdly inconsistent. You say it's enjoyable and engaging and then you say they're not worth it, even given the build and presentation? I suppose everyone has a different measure of "great". But aren't we in this hobby to enjoy music? And given that most music is imperfectly recorded, it would appear that Meze has built a excellent headphone.
    For those who want to listen to the gear and not the music. I get your point. To each their own. For me the Empyrean is about enjoying the music and each time I sit down in a quiet room and sink back in my chair they do just that. Empyrean is not about taking apart the music or upstream gear. IMO

    • @jamescruz8678
      @jamescruz8678 3 роки тому +6

He didn't talk about whether he tried the other, but in my opinion, the alcantara pads are not even close in terms of sound quality to the leather. You wouldn't think the pads would make a big difference, but when I swapped back and forth, it's night and day. The bass, soundstage, imaging, pretty much everything sounds way better with the leather pads.

    @maximilianmaier3950 3 роки тому +10

    I would love to have these, but they are ouside of my reasonable price range.
    However the price is also kind of what I appreciate about these headphones. They manufacture these as their flagship and they sell it as a flagship.
    They are a romanian company and manufacture in Romania and they give you a lot of extras like an extra set of ear pads, a stellar case and a the balanced cable.
    They could easily have these be produced in China, get rid of the aluminium case, remove the extra cable and the ear pads, and sell them significantly cheaper, but they don't.
    I personally wish they would've gone for a midrange Planar that I could reasonably afford first, but when companies release a flagship product, it should have no compromises in terms of build quality, overall quality and accessories and I think that's exactly what Meze has done here.
    If you compare that to the trend some smartphone manufactures started to get into, where they sell their flagships without charger an manufacture them in China, i think what Meze does with the Empyreans is admirable. And I don't know what it is, because if Apple just included a charger and asked for 40€ more, I would have had no issues with it, but having to order a charger seperately when I buy a phone for over 1K, having to order the charger seperately just annoyed me.

    I'm torn. I tried these at CanJam London in 2019 and was absolutely floored by the build quality, comfort and sound as well! I really remember thinking that it was on another level at the time, compared to some of the other headphones I tried e.g. Focal Stellia and Utopia, Audeze LCD-4 and others, and some Hifiman ones - didn't try the Susvara though sadly. I guess the build quality, comfort and presentation might've just made such a stellar initial impression on me that it made me blind to some of its flaws in terms of sound that majority of people seem to agree on are present. Especially considering I thought it just sounded fun, dynamic and yes, good, as well. I couldn't really find any music that sounded bad on it when I demo'd it, granted for 10 - 15 short minutes in a big loud hall... I really need to give them a listen again and compare them with other headphones at a local hifi place some time.

    Have both the ZMF VCs (African Blackwood, Auteur Lambskins) and the Meze Empys (Leather Pads). Running balanced off both Cayin HA-300 and iFi DSD Pro. While I like the detailed review, it just convinces me of the truth that there are no headphones extremely competent on all types of music, and depending on what you're planning to listening to or the mood you're in that day, you can definitely use a different setup to give you what you want. I would rarely ever be listening to the selection used in this review for the Empys. I can attest that listening to Charlie Hayden's Art of Song on the Empys driven by the HA-300 (with WE300Bs) is superb, in warmth, balance, soundstage, pretty much as good as I've ever heard. Cranking up Pat Metheny's Are You Going With Me (Live) on the Empys on the iFi, you can definitely hear the separation and layering of this very busy track, not quite missing as the review implies. The ZMF VC is indeed more heavily coloured and richer, and might fit the kind of music selection in this review.

    Well I did post an earlier comment which seems to have disappeared?! Anyway I just don’t get this review. Not being able to go into shops we have to get some idea from internet or well known and trustworthy UA-cam reviewers. I did the latter and the Empyreans came out as possibly the “best in the world” at the time. Obviously you have to take such comments with a pinch of salt. However the reviews I watched used a comprehensive range of music, recommended a possible change of leads but always had an opinion on the 2 sets of pads. Meze state that these have an affect and have to be considered separately. You failed to do this and comments below reflect. Also review titles rarely include a statement such as you “shouldn’t buy”, even for poorly reviewed items. I bought these headphones with a 30 day return if not satisfied. Never had one thought to return as they just got better over time. ‘Burn-in’? Never been an advocate of that but they certainly have improved.
    I enjoy music from the 50s up to the present day which includes all types except hip-hop and electronic via Qobuz, Amazon HD and Spotify. Have not gone down the Tidal route due to your excellent MQA investigation. Thank you for that but this review is not up to your standard.

      its more because the $1500 mark for headphones has become so competitive that it is almost always worth buying two headphones in that price category than 1 TOTL headphone as their proficiencies for certain genres and types of music will outweigh the very slight technical advantage the more expensive headphone possesses. As if that hasn't been done a thousand fucking times already.
      Look, here's the rundown. The 600 series get the one single most important thing about a headphone right, that being the midrange presentation & timbre, which most other headphones at its price point stumble over. This makes them seem at first glance like they're punching above their weight class, and they kinda are, but only cuz they're choosing to focus on that one single thing at the expense of everything else. Bass extension & tightness, treble smoothness, dynamics, soundstage, imaging and so on. You buy a more expensive headphone, you get a midrange about as good as the 600 series, PLUS all that other stuff you were missing out on.
