The problem with buying a $4,000 pair of headphones is that your daughter might have to go without a Louis Vuitton handbag and you have to keep driving your 1991 SX Corolla for another 5 years.

Thanks Randy! That’s awesome you had a chance to check these out. I would love to do so myself. I have the 99 classics and while I do like them very much they can be a bit warm on some tracks. I am exploring ways to brighten them up just a little. Purchased the smaller ear pads but I can’t say they really did a whole lot to change the sound.

I remember the review on the Klipsch Heresy's. I always thought they possibly be a endgame speaker for me. At that price those headphones would have to be a end all in headphones.
Nice to see how the other half lives, lol.

I've been using the hifiman sundaras for years and still love them. I went to canjam a few years ago and tried dozens of headphones. The only ones that I could immediately tell were superior to the sundaras were the meze empyrians. Of course there is diminishing returns when it comes to price but the quality is definitely there with Meze.

    • @SB-ht6kf
      @SB-ht6kf 2 роки тому +2

Love the Sundaras too! I took the plunge and bought the original empyrean after hearing them at a show...Wow....amazing....so then also a while later, I saw Randy's review of the Xduoo M-604 and picked it up....running from a PC through an ifi zen dac...so what happened is I ended up hating the Empyreans, as the M-604 added that little bit of warmth to the Sundaras and tubey harmonic distortion to tamp down some of the funny metallic detail sheen....then I turned on truebass on the ifi zen dac...and it was incredibly hard to tell the difference between the two, they were basically identical...which was hilariously disappointing. The Empyreans look cooler though...yea...

    • @danpangione
      @danpangione 2 роки тому +1

@@SB-ht6kf Yeah see I love the detail. It gives me a reason to use them instead of speakers, even when I'm not trying to be quiet. They definitely needed a little boost tho, I run them with a shelf eq of +5db @ 100hz on monolith thx amp and its perfect for my ears. I will say they were harsh and fatuiging when new but they broke in nicely in just a few days.

My friend has the Audese LCD-X and they sounded wonderful. I didn’t have the budget so settled on the Sundaras and I love them. I’m using the ifi Zen Signature DAC and CAN combo and I think the Burr Brown chip’s characteristic warmth means they don’t sound over-analytical. The LCD-X is better and for my friend, who is a musician playing many electronic keyboards, they make sense. For me, however, the Sundara/ifi rig is just perfect.
Great video, Randy. Occasionally venturing into the high end definitely adds perspective to your regular gear.

    A taste of what’s possible :)
Haven’t heard these M E yet, thanks for sharing your impressions!
A few years back I heard the Focal Utopia hphones, and was blown away, to the point of obliterating my plausible budget for headphones.
Then spent a weekend at CanJam.
Exploring different end game head phone alternatives.
Liked the raw detail of Utopias, but not the grain. Loved the smoothness of Ether opens, just lacking a little detail.
Loved the ethereal quality of the ZMF Auteur Teakwood’s. Love loved the almost planar yet grain free detail of the Blackwoods where low is low non resonant details come out of nothing.
Not hyper detailed just really good overall. Listening almost daily since. Schiit Valhalla 2/Saga.
Been upgrading the signal out of my iMac to a Metrum Octave dac nos, with iFi purifiers for usb and spdif, redefined what I thought the dac sounded like!
But yes, the Auteurs listed for ~ $2k.
    And keep rewarding :)

I've totally broken the bank on black friday buying wharfedale 12.2s (Thanks for your vid on that) and an audiolab 6000a also got a sweet deal on a second hand 80s harman kardon integrated amp, tuner and cassette deck. was hoping to find a cd transport for about $350 USD eqiv but "budget" ones like the audiolab 6000ct still cost over $550 USD here which seems wild.

We just dig all audio equipment.
It’s ok ….. we won’t hold it against you.
That particular angle may have “launched” you …. but as an audiophile there is more to life than just the cheap stuff.
    I’ll keep watching regardless. Cheers!

I'm with it. I think Randy should bring in the occasional perspective piece to contrast the more budget gear against the higher end.
And let's be real. Even if cheapaudioman reviewed a 4k pair of speakers or headphones, what is that really in the high end market? A single interconnect or speaker cable, maybe? There are arguments that 4k in hifi is still within modest measure when the ceiling is as high as it is.

I’m glad you’re going to add an American company’s product to your “experience base.” I’d also be curious about an Abyss headphone (new Diana TC model is out). Because the way my lifestyle is headed, it seems likely I SHOULD make my most expensive piece of audio gear be my headphones, not my speakers or their amp. All my casual listening is Bluetooth IEM and 3/4 of my critical listening is on headphones nowadays. And foreseeable future in a down-sized home or apartment makes a headphone-centric audio life even more certain.

I'm not the sort who'd go to a 3 star Michelin restaurant and wonder where they keep the ketchup. I'd simply savor the moment, turn brain off and enjoy. $4K headphones are ridiculous for most but it's silly not to appreciate them given the chance. In the long run though I'd miss the grittiness, rough edges, and quirky personality, in short the imperfections and flaws that characterize the things and people I love. What first made me just listen to music was the six transistor radio my ten year old self had. Lots of gear since has done the same. Now my old ears love whatever can help me hear what my younger self used to hear so easily.

Nice to see you trying these out. I picked up the Liric which is the new closed back premium headphone from Meze and costs $2000. They're the most expensive headphones I've owned, but they're also the best closed back I've heard. They're even more neutral than the Elite and in my opinion have better tuning. They're not detail monsters but have great clarity. The bass is some of the best I've heard from any headphone, especially the subbass. I haven't enjoyed listening music this much in a long time. If you're serious about the Elite but don't want to pay that much, definitely give the Liric a try.

    Hello Mr.C.Audioman,
    Nice work here !
I just saw you on someone's site and thought that I appreciate your approaching philosophy. So I subscribed immediately!!!
It seems that Audio has the possibility of hitting 200,000 subs on UA-cam, you could raise that bar if you bring a catchy excitement like Cassey Neiset did. Hmm.
You reporting that music sounds better with these headphones kinda says it all but I'll probably stay with my Sennheiser HD 580.
My next possibility will be.the Abyss Diana because they make me look good ( sounding good is a bonus )
I'll be staying with you till you give up in frustration or until you decide to censor follower's comments.
If I think of a catchy click-bait, I'll send it your way.
Thanks for being there for us all !!!

If you like what Audeze does, LCD-2C might still offer pretty good value. They're unfortunately more expensive now than when they were released, but they are still the most affordable "big" Audeze headphones. I had been shopping in the mid-hi-fi space for, eh, around a decade, but when I heard a pair of older LCD-2, I knew immediately this is what I like, this is what I want. M1060 was touted as a cheap LCD-2 alternative so I tried my luck with that, but it _really_ didn't live up to it's hype and I just ended up returning those and going for the real deal with LCD-2C. Zero regrets, I love how Audeze sounds, if I ever come up with enough disposposable money the only way I'm going from these is up the Audeze product range, though I'd be perfectly happy to stay right where I am with these too (and have been since 2018).

I haven't heard the Elite. My friend had the original Empyrean and Audeze LCD-4. And I have LCD-4 too. We both liked LCD-4 better and he ended up selling the Empyrean. Audeze can often be sourced in perfectly good B-stock from local dealers. My brand new LCD-4 cost me $2800ish. Still a lot, but I use them every day and love them. For good value in high end electronics to drive them, I recommend Audio-gd.

    • @BrJD-ii4iv

Good to know! Yesterday, I just purchased the Audeze lcd 4 for $2800ish myself. I haven’t received it yet, but everyone keeps raving about the bass and so I had to give into my curiosity. The lcd 5 has no bass and so I sold it..

    • @zackw4941
      @zackw4941 Рік тому +1

@@BrJD-ii4iv Congrats! And yeah, LCD-5 is a joke. My other audiophile buddy, I mentioned before, bought a set to satisfy his curiosity too. He brought them over here a while back. Two of our other friends came by as well.
We had our two LCD-4's, the LCD-5, two LCD-2c's, early Rosson RAD-0 with wood cups, maybe something else, don't remember. For electronics we had my Audio-gd R1, Master 19, Audiovalve Solaris, topping A90 and then his Denafrips Ares II, Schiit Ragnarok 2, Folkvangr, THX-789, again maybe something else, don't remember.
No one in the room liked the LCD-5. The LCD-4 was the most liked. LCD-2c has a similar signature at lower cost, but the LCD-4 just does everything better. The RAD-0 is very good and leans in the direction of LCD-5, without giving up so much body. I heard the newer ones at Canjam and from memory, the new RAD-0 compared more favorably to my LCD-4 than these older ones. BUT, I was listening to both on the awesome Fidelis, which is a little warmer than my own equipment, so hard to tell.
My friend had actually already arranged to trade his LCD-5 for ZMF Verite and cash, but told the buyer this meeting was happening first. The buyer had owned and sold LCD-5 before and apparently wanted them back. The same day he received them, he told my friend that he remembered why he sold his LCD-5 the first time! Poor guy..
As for bass, the LCD-4 may not trample everything you've heard before in terms of raw quantity or extension, though they have plenty. For me, it's more the weight and texture that they give to the whole spectrum. They have a large sound stage in all directions, and a very lush sound that makes it hard to go back to anything else. All these new high end phones with their thin sound, will give a high sense of resolution and speed, but are not satisfying for me to listen to. The LCD-4 are no slouch in resolution or speed either, with the right electronics. They just don't throw as many details in your face, with the thicker sound. I bought and sold more expensive gear before calling it quits with my reasonably priced Audio-gd stack and I think this is a very good combination.
My same buddy recently purchased the R27-HE and I haven't heard it yet. I hope it's not too much better because I really don't want to spend more money!
Oh, I forgot to mention, there is a bit of variance between LCD-4. My pair is especially lush, which I like, but vocals have a higher probability of sounding recessed. My Audio-gd stack does a pretty good job keeping them forward though. My friend's LCD-4 is a little leaner, faster, more vocal forward, in spite of him using hybrid pads and mine with full leather like stock. (We both have Dekoni Elite pads.)
Last thing, they're heavy. Doesn't bother me, but I'm a big dude. If you get a hot spot, DMS has a great guide for unscrewing the headband strap and then lowering it a little. Worked great for me!

@@zackw4941 Thank you so much for that detailed response! I’m a bass lover & I was so disappointed when I’ve heard the LCD 5. I was beyond upset because I paid $4500.00 fr Moon Audio and stuck with it over a two months trying to like it. I eventually sold it and took an L on it. @@BrJD-ii4iv Stinks taking a loss on something. But if we don't try, we won't know!
I never liked LCD-X, can't put my finger on it. I believe those Sonys and Klipsch are quite warm, but maybe not so "hi-fi?" They are a very pleasant listen though.
My same friend (Yes, he has more money and a bigger problem than I do!) had LCD-3 as well for a while. I don't think I ever heard them side by side with the 4, but I had my LCD-2c at the time. (which I bought right after hearing LCD-4 at Canjam and couldn't afford them yet.) I think we both felt like the 3's are nice, but the whole range is so close, really the 2c and 4 are the only two that matter.
I think you're going to be very happy with the 4. Between the two of us, my buddy and I, we've been through a LOT of headphones and speakers and nothing outright beats the LCD-4. Nothing. And I just got my Tekton Moabs a few weeks ago too ;)
The Rag 2 has plenty of power and will drive them fine. But for a dedicated headphone amp, I don't think it performs at its price point. A Topping A90 is really just as good and neither one quite stands up to my Audio-gd Master 19, which is bloody fantastic, IMO. Even my more expensive tube amp doesn't get a lot of use any more. They do different things better and both do everything well. But the Master 19 is solid state, so it uses less power and I'm never thinking about tube life. More details, a little less 3D space vs. the tubes.

Yesterday, I purchased the 4’s on eBay. They say it’ll arrive between Nov 2 - Nov 15 (as it’s coming fr Japan). can’t believe a headphone that’s 7 years old and it’s still talked about. I’ve heard the abyss 1266 is a beast but the sight of it is not so attractive. However, the 4s are absolutely gorgeous to look at!

Nice review, Randy. You didn't seem convinced about the Mezes from the start. For $4000 they should've knocked your socks off..........and then massaged your feet, gotten you a cup of coffee, etc..... Are siths allowed to disclose where they got that lovely rocktopus? I’m afraid as uninitiated practitioner my eyes have just been badly burned after googling rocktopus.
    On a more serious note:
I keep auditioning and reading about different headphones trying to make a decision which one is going to be my first hi-fi set. So far I’ve been a mid-fi guy with hd800s, clears og, and a few other sets from the same price range.
And the more I do the more apparent it becomes that as you go into hi-fi the more of the extreme you get. Susvara being an example of an extreme, just like utopias, final audio, etc. while these bad boys are the example of not so much an extreme music characteristic but rather of an extreme musicality.

I was just listening to some Mink Deville on my ultra suede sofa with a cheap pair of thousand dollars headphones (I'm embarrassed) and having some cheap $200 caviar (embarrassed again). I was wondering if there is going to be a Christmas Special? Last Christmas some peoples like myself hadn't discovered your channel yet. I was looking through some old stuff, and found a ticket given to my great great grandfather Henry Harrison Fahrqhuar (made up name), and found a ticket from Dec.1st 1893, that was slapped on him for not having mandatory sleigh bells on his horse drawn sleigh. Imagine a head on collision involving a sleigh and horses! The ticket was for 35 cents, equivalent to about $8 today. He must not have paid it. Will there be a Heavy Metal Christmas song playlist? The biggest recorded snowflake: 15 inches and 8 inches thick. Each one is different. We are all missing out on it least some things not living at The North Pole.

My takeaway from this video is that I can listen to, and be engaged by, music for four thousand dollars US (that's over AUD$5,600), or I can languish on the sidelines trying to be satisfied with my HarmonicDyne Zeus (which I do not think are cheap at US$350). But I take your point - you need to have listened to a great headphone before you can make subjective opinions of other, cheaper, headphones. Selling out? Nope, I don't think so. But I guess we now have a reference for comparison. So, how do my Zeus do please?
