  • I personally really like this car and owned one for 6 years accumulating over 100K miles. Its a shame their run was so short. So lets take a dive into this car and see what happened.

I agree with everything you said about the GTO. I bought a new one in 04 and kept it until 08 when I got the new LS3 in the Corvette. I only had the Vette for 2 years. I always missed the GTO and actually liked it better than my Vette. Last June of 20, I found a 2005 GTO with 22,000 miles on it, original owner, 100% stock in immaculate condition. I drove to Wisconsin to see it and bought it on the spot for $18,000. I will never sell it. Thanks for your video!

I own a 2006 Spice red 6 speed with 33k miles, bought it from the original owner. I wanted it as a Pontiac man that I am, and to have a V8, rear drive two door that wasn't a Mustang, Camaro, or Challenger. I like how it is rarely seen on the streets, compared to the others.

I love my GTO I wouldn't sell for anything. It's truly becoming a highly sought-after car. Most people like them more in 2021 than when they first came out. Great video.

Hadn’t noticed them becoming sought after, what makes you say that? Just curious, the retail value on them do not seems to be going up at all in the last 5-10 years.

Still own my 2004 GTO that I bought new, for a steal price, and still love it today. To me they seem to be getting more and more popular. I get comments every time I stop to get gas, etc.....
Most just do not know what they are because GM really didn't advertise them. To me the body styling is really good as time has passed. They still look modern, even today, and definitely do not look like inflated Cavaliers. Ford guys like to say the Cavalier thing IMO. lol
For those that know a 2004-2006 GTO they are easy to spot in high traffic, because they do not look like any other car on the road. That is why I think they are becoming more desirable as the years pass.

I think one of the biggest problems for the US customers was the name. When you guys think GTO, you probably imagine aold school GTO from the 60's. This was not that car. This car is essentially a 2 door Holden Commodore which was made, built, and designed in Australia. The Monaro evolved from the 4 door sedan VT holden Commodore, and the name Monaro is as iconic here in Australia as say GTO, Camaro, Mustang, Viper, etc are to the US.
It may of been better to of simply called it the Pontiac Monaro instead, and develop a following from there.
But it's funny how all the cars Holden sent to the states, GTO, G8, Chevy SS, are great cars and pretty much all the reviews from the US have been very positive for the car, I remember a journalist reviewing the G8 when it first went on sale as being the greatest Pontiac ever, yet back here in Australia there was an additude of "it's only a Holden" and all these snobby pricks buying BMW, Mercedes, Audi, etc. And yet a Commodore built at the same time as them will outlast those euro trash cars. Built well and reliable, where the euro vehicles have so much cheap plastic crappy parts, wiring and sensor issues, heaps of overheating issues, etc, and a lot.of people still bought those euro trash cars instead just for the name.

It’s a 5th Gen not a 4th, but that aside, this was such a perfect description of the goat. I absolutely am obsessed with mine, bought my 04m6 PBM with 6k miles on it in 2015 for I wanna say 17,18k. Worth over that now with 65k miles and a few decent mods. I’m so obsessed with the thing it looks brand new. I love them so much

The 2004 GTO was introduced just as the 2005 Retro Mustang design was being shown in media. A pretty big shadow to be thrown into. Fast forward to 2019, 2020. The Mustang profile looks similar to the 2004 GTO. The GTO has aged very well.

The 2004-2006 GTO was intended to be only a 3 year run from the start of production. GM never intended/wanted production to go beyond 3 years. 3 years was "IT" from the start of production, regardless of sales.

Right. They had a limit of 15k a year in sales, although they never hit that. The GTO roughly equaled the Trans Am WS6 in sales which is what it was priced at.

I’m looking to buy an 04. I plan to change exhaust regardless, so it’s just a back bumper additional cost. Stroke a 5.3 to 383 so initial engine isn’t important. I want a cowl hood so the 05-06 isn’t necessary.
The intentions I have make paying extra for the 05-06 is pointless, as I’m not looking for resale value. I want to reach a 1000hp to hunt hellcats. That’s the plan anyway.

Two things I never understood regarding popular criticism: "It looks like a Cavalier," To me, it looks most like a Grand Prix coupe, which I guess make sense since its a 2 door Pontiac with 90s styling. "It was a failure because it was only on sale for 3 years," Gm planned this car to be discontinued at the end of 2006 to make way for the next gen Holden Commodore which the Monaro/GTO was based on. Apparently there was no plan for another generation of Monaro so then no GTO. You could make the argument that the G8 which was based on the new Commodore and came out in 2008 was the successor to the GTO. They stopped making those when they stopped making Pontiacs.

I love my GTO for a lot of the reasons you listed and a few more. I like how they are fairly rare and there isn't a ton of other ones at a car show or meet. It's not the fastest car I've owned but I definitely slides better then any other car I've had. They drift very well and are easy to control. There is a ton of aftermarket support for them also. They have a few flaws like their weight, brakes and crappy stitching on the seats but all of those problems can be easily addressed aside from the weight. I also get more respect from car guys in the gto. Mustang guys don't even fuck with me on the street. I think in a few more years they will start going up in value also. Like you said probably half have been totaled or parted out.

I did the doors and floor to the back seat in Dyna mat, im doing to trunk floor and lid in dyna mat soon, 12" sub and amp is probably another 35 40 lbs. I've also got a Nx express nitrous kit that weights 20 lbs with a full bottle. I'm probably touting an extra 150 to 175 lb. The dyna Mat has made a huge difference in road noise and took away all the squeaks out. So the extra weight is worth it to me and the Nutrous more then makes up for it.

@@StelioKontos42069 The road noise wasnt bad except where the shift comes through the floor. The rubber grommet that seals the shifter up was basically destroyed and let a lot of air and noise in but I didn't know that until I took everything apart to do the dyna mat. Now its super quiet inside the car. No rattles inside or out with my radio turned way1 up. And it killed the drone I would get in the cabin from the Slp exhaust. I'm going to swap out the Slp exhaust VAREX adjustable muffler system that can make it almost a quiet as stock to pretty loud with a hit of a switch or I can use an app on my phone. The Aussie GTO was a fill in for the outgoing Camaro and FIrebird. They got shit on for their looks but were the 4th gen F bodies any more attractive? I've got an 04 IBM with the blue interior, They were a bit more advanced in the fact that you got IRS. Their build quality was far superior to what GM was making at the time too. The 04 GTO interior was far nicer than a same year Corvette. Oh yeah, its still under 28,000 miles.

fifth gen, not 4th gen, Torrid Red did not "become" and has virtually no relation to Spice Red Metallic, and if you ever see a Cavalier and a GTO in the same picture you will see they look nothing alike. GTOs are clean and sleek Euro styling, and still are mistaken for new by the uninitiated because the styling is timeless. And yes, bought mine new in 2006 and love it.

Reviews were lukewarm?!? Evo magazine. the gold standard of European exotics, gave it a rare four of five stars, well higher than many cars that cost multiples, Top Gear UK called it magical, and their favorite muscle car, Road and Tracker: GTO vs. Charger, go for the KO with the GTO. Mustang (post-Fox) and Charger were both muscle cars of same era. So much misinformation.

I do agree the marketing sucked. Really sucked.

Also your prediction of future value was good. I think of them similar to E body Cudas. Barracudas were, even in their best year 1970, only 1/3 and 1/4 of Camaro and Mustang sales, but are the most sought after today. sales figures at the time are not a predictor of future value.

I an an original owner of a 2004 PBM A4. Except it’s now a LS3 418. 2nd motor..3rd transmissions Numerous brakes, tires, alternators and my original starter just went out. Different hood bumpers fenders, everything. Lol. Seriously thinking of selling just because I want a Vette. Click my page to hear my car.

2004 owner here...bought brand in April 04. First one in town. Only 78,000 miles in 16 years. Best car ever owned. Mostly stock. Coworkers recognize my Goat. Stock 04 exhaust sound is great...too good to change for a better performance muffler. Changed the tail-lights for HSV version. Removed the spoiler. Still turns heads...not bad for an ugly cavalier.
