Did you just nonchalantly say the LS3 was putting out 535 horsepower. Why would they sell the LS3 at 535 horsepower, when the LS7 was only putting about 5:05? And a much more expensive option?
I think you meant to say 4:35

I have owned a 13 GS for about a year and a half now. I bought it with 24K miles in FT Lauderdale and paid 32K used at a Chevy dealership. I added Comp cam, Kooks headers and X-pipe no cats with stock Corvette mufflers as well as Circle D converter, ATI balancer, catch can, Holley Intech CAI, 1000CC injectors and Flex fuel system (plenty of E85 here). On Mustang induction dyno it produces 467 RWHP, closer to 500 on a Dynojet.. I'm still in cheaper with same performance and I doubt I will ever drop a valve. Plus, I can take the targa top off and enjoy the sun. Try that in your Z. Certainly not to take away from the Z, I love all Corvettes but we all have our favorites and the GS is mine

I probably spent less than you for my mods, but my C6 Z06 has heads and cam, injectors, headers, MSD and flex fuel. It made 640rwhp and 571ft lbs of torque.
I gladly skipped out on the targa, for the raw power delivery of the LS7.

Cool video. I have owned both. I had a 2008 C6Z H/C/I bought it supercharged had 5 owners 2 accidents reported bad decision on my part. Nothing against a C6Z fast car but this paticular one was a huge money pit n had many problems so i finally got tired of throwin money at it so traded for a 2010C6 GS 1 owner car 23k miles X pipe n muffler delete only. Absolutely love it. It is an auto car n silver vs the black C6Z i had which was a pain to keep clean. The GS is obviously not as fast but as far as just a great daily that sounds good looks good n dig the targa top. If i wanted more power could do some bolt ons but for now i am content. Ultimately it is personal preference both are cool cars but i myself like the GS better for what i use it for.

Whatever corvette you buy, aside from buying a lemon, you're a winner! I just picked up a bone stock 2013 LT3 GS with manual transmission and love it! The wider body gives it a really nice look, alot of people complain about the factory bose and paper speakers, I think it sounds pretty good! Ive noticed going for a rip on a hot day, the top can make alot of creaking sounds on the roads. I need to do some digging if there is something to reduce that, beyond turning the stereo up!

Ls7 blocks also have a cracking issue cylinder and block. I test drove a 2008 Z06 and the clutch was so bad my sneaker fell off. Reved it up through the gears. First gear was way to tall going up to 60 MPH and felt flat on a hot day in FL. I drove away in my base 08 a6 convertible with Kooks/Loudmouth and a first gear with more torque topping at 45 MPH and was very happy. 11.8 @121 at BMR. Nothing like hearing the pipes roar with the top down. My 427 stroked ls3 98 Trans am is my really fast car anyway.

I chose Grand Sport because i wanted to go boost with a stock block, get a newer model year for the same money or less, wanted the ability to finance on a longer term if need be due to newer year, liked the stock Grand Sport fenders and wheels better, and wanted a targa. Was in Ohio at the time....
If I had to do it over again.......
    Moved to Arizona.....
I would strongly consider maybe going back towards a C6 Z06. In hot weather states, keeping the car cool with AC on, while racing it, or sitting in traffic on 120 degree days is a legit concern on most 700+ whp boosted set ups. So really a N/A Z with a killer Heads, Cam, Intake mani, & bolt on on E85 would almost do better in climates like this. It may not make as much dyno rwhp as a boosted SBE Grand Sport but with the lighter weight of the Z06 and better gearing a well set up N/A Z06 can be just as fast. Plus I planned on getting heads for the LS3 anyways. So if I got a Z06 i would at least do H/C/I. That would mitigate the valve guide and valve drop issues. Also, since the Z would be N/A the thinner cylinder walls due to bigger bore and closer spacing wouldn't matter too much if the car was properly speced tuned and maintained. The Z would just make for a better daily driver in the heat for summer time in extreme heat & has the potential to be just as fast. Will also always be worth more & more desirable than my GS.

Totally agree with you, I’m actually thinking to upgrade from my C5 to C6. Used to be a huge fan of Z06 since that was one of my dream car when I was in high school. However after reading too many issues about the LS7, I’m now looking for Grand Sport only, also I love the targa top, the only reason I finally decided to go with C5 coupe instead of Z06 is because I love the open top experience when I still have my C4.

When I bought my C6 GS, I was going back and forth with the base C7, they were both about the same price. I ended up going with the GS, mostly because I thought it looked better and it had lower miles. I like the interior in the C7's way better though. I live in Florida, so I love riding with the top off and just cruising.

I’m in that exact boat now. I test drove a couple C7’s and even though they’re gorgeous, none felt remotely as comfortable or solid as the c6 gs. The C7 interior is styled really well but it’s cramped and feels cheap. My heart keeps coming back to the first one I test drove, a 2013 C6 GS. I’m in the minority I know but I liked it better in almost every way despite how dated it is. It’ll be my daily starting next week.

The valve issue was non concentric (relative to valve seat) valve guides causing the valve head to shift slightly when seating, work hardening the stem right before the taper. Effected small number of heads.
Also the sleeve thickness isn’t the problem unless you want insane low end torque.
It’s the ring gap #1 hyper-eutectic pistons #2 11:1 compression #3. I built a 97-98 LS1 Fbody and cracked a sleeve (3.898-3.903). GM increased the wall thickness after ‘98 model year and all subsequent LS motors aren’t known for sleeves being too thin while some are less prone to distortion than others. Application matters.
I boosted my stock long block LS7 with 33k miles on it, which I purchased for $33k In the dead of winter. I ran an ECS Novi 1500 centrifugal kit pushing 7lbs of boost making 560rwhp. Lost cylinder 7 due too the top ring butting and the piston pushing up through the stuck ring and losing a portion of the side of the piston. I drove it for another 2,000 miles on 7 cylinders and tried to grenade it on the drag strip. It was still pulling mustangs with trans brakes and slicks when the TSP 427 went in.
Now I’m out of blower at 700whp on a mustang dyno. My intercooler is trash so IAT’s kill timing on the rollers.
Also the C6ZR1 was manual only. No autos.

If it affected only a small number of heads like gm has said why is it across all model years? Its been discussed but i dont see it brought up. @@greg12m3 My Z06 snapped the #2 cylinder exhaust valve destroying the motor. it cost me $7k to get the car back on the road. How you might ask? Texas speed GM aluminum 5.3 sleeved blocked bored with custom pistons with stock crank and rods bringing the the LS 5.3 327 C.I to the original 427 C.I. I had to replaced one of the heads adding steel exhaust valves, double springs and bronze guides. Im waiting to see how well this holds up. I can assure you my Z06 had coating issues on the Ti valves. The previous owner had the heads fixed but I did an oil analysis and had high bronze in the oil. Car failed wiggle test as well causing me to pull and dissemble the heads. Physical inspection showed most all of the coating had worn off destroying the valves. Reassembled the heads and sent them to AHP who called advising the valves were shot, confirming my diagnosis. Like $4000 later, I reinstalled the heads and sold the car. Some things that weren't mentioned:
    1. GS has different gear ratios, and though it has the same rear diff as the Z, it ends up feeling like it takes off quicker, but you suffer in higher gears especially if boosted.
    2. The Z has a magnesium front cradle, which reduces weight over the front end. A lot of the performance in the Z cars comes from being so much more lightweight.
    3. M6 cars got a dry sump oiling system, forged crank, hand assembled engine, battery relocated to hatch area. This excludes convertibles. A huge added value.
    4. The Z cars had larger sway bars, and stiffer dampeners.
    5. HUD (Heads Up Display) came standard on Z cars. GS you needed to check the option of get the 2lt or 3lt.
    6. Z cars had both carbon front fenders, and hood.
    7. Later model Z cars had a carbon option, adding carbon ceramic brakes, and tons of other carbon. Also blessed with the ZR1 aero package.
    8. Z cars do not have a heimholtz resonator on the intake, resulting in a cleaner engine bay look.
    3. Z cars got a taller center spoiler.
    Corrections:
    1. Not just a run of the mill LS3. They have 821 heads. As stated previously, dry sump engines had forged crank, hand assembled.
    2. LS3 rated at 430/436 with optional bi-mode exhaust.
    Think that's all I got.

I have a GS with an auto transmission. Why? Because I have zero interest in rowing gears in Houston traffic. As bad or worse than LA traffic. With a CAM, headers, NGK plugs, 160 thermostat and a tune. Its 570 at the crank and 470 at the wheels. Which makes it faster than a stock ZO6. All things considered. The GS is a better buy.
