Since it was too hot in Vegas to go home, I decided to explore some higher-elevation sites - like this cozy volunteer cabin in the beautiful Sierra mountains! I was all alone in the bear and Sasquatch-infested woods, so it was slightly spooky...but I felt I had to do it, if I want to call myself an outdoorswoman! I also felt obligated to take a bracing dip in the nearby stream...YIKES!

I've always been blown away by every hunters camp I've ever ran across. The time & effort put into the construction out in the middle of nowhere makes these places a God send at times when the weather changes.
Wow! I stayed there In the late 80s with some friends. That creek chilled our beers in no time. I remember the porch being screened in and there was insulation in the bedroom. Good to know it's still there.

I LOVE YOU! I am a 63 yr old grand momma (Nana) my life has been a long hard road of never doing anything I wanted. I have lived my life for my family, for everyone else. That’s what I do. Not complaining. I love my grand babies, sons and family more than life. Everyone is grown now. They have their own lives. The grand babies are all “almost” grown (9 - 27). I am so ready to just LIVE! You inspire me. You make me laugh. You (even at your much younger age) teach me! I just want to fly out there and travel with you! I am living vicariously through you! Sarah do you realize what you found?! That's Bill William's cabin of Bill Williams mountainmen fame. He founded the mountain men. OMG I want to move there and spend the rest of my life there. You are right it is beautiful. What a piece of history. You've done it again. I don't know how you do it. You either have me rolling on the floor with laughter. Or absolutely amazed with bucket list finds.

I was offered a job to maintain the dams on a hydroelectric project in the High Sierra's a few years ago. The cabin I was going to live in was 2 stories tall because in winter the average snowfall was over 8-10 feet deep during the winters. Ended up having to pass on the job, my mother became very ill and I chose to spend her last months by her side. I wonder sometimes about the path not taken and how my life would have been different. BUT, no regrets, she needed a son who was near and loyalty to family is still more important than adventures. Take that snowmobile trip, Wonderhussy. Do it for me, and my mother. She would have loved your channel. ☮️

The Eastern Sierra's has so many amazing places to camp and backpack to. Been there enough, I'm friends with the rangers. Such history and beauty, glad another adventure was made.

If you have to go in the woods an outhouse is better than a hole but a nice outhouse to go in is priceless, while in the woods. Lived off grid in northern Cali mountains for a couple yrs. They had a concrete thrown poured. Just had to be scooped out every few months depending on how deep you dug it each time.

Great video! I just found your channel and am catching up with your adventures. You remind me of my ex wife both physically and with your adventurous spirit. We used to do similar long weekend trips but on a smaller scale. We would camp and hike up and down the northeast from Maine down as far as Virginia. With regard to sleeping in your truck and not the cabin we would often pitch our tent and throw all of our gear in it and sleep in our Chevy Suburban, talk about comfortable "roughing it"! I miss it and her. For the time being I will explore vicariously through your adventures until I get back out there. Stay safe and keep up the great videos!

Glad to see that you made it to the cabin. Last time I was there was on Halloween in the early 90's and yes, the midnight visitor woke me. Staying in your car was a good idea.
You were in my old Stompin' Grounds when I was stationed up there on the Eastern Sierra just above Walker CA in the mid 80's. We used to camp in the same type of terrain in the winter and summer. Your secret is safe with me . The Base is just off of Hwy 108 and everywhere between Bridgeport and Reno can be an adventure in itself. Glad you found that bit of Heaven .........
John Maliskey I live on the western side of 108. So is the base responsible for all of the “ boom” sounds we hear and feel over here? There is an entire FB Group here dedicated to the mystery booms and a ton of crazy theories.
I was winter and summer Red Hat qualified. Left there in '87. Was one of the first full time Corpsman instructors in the Medical Cold Weather Course. The only booms I heard was the snow pack settling during or right after a huge snow storm. Big Foot was reported stomping around at times as relayed by back packers on the High Sierra trail.... I never heard them.
@John Alarcon We supplied medical support to the Mountain Leaders Course and camped at the lake often. This was also summer or winter courses. We came down early one time and it had an avalanche about 7 hours later that took out some of the most beautiful scenery ever.
I know that beautiful area well. Quick funny story... Was camping in that area with my husband & 1yo son, 1982. In the morn I was walking, collecting dried wood for a fire, looked up & there was at least 50 Marines with a camp set up. They had come silently in the night, & if I stood still all you could hear was the wind in the trees. Haha, these guys were having breakfast SILENTLY. I loved it, have always supported our military, but I’ll bet they were laughing inside while waiting for me to see them! 🇺🇸
@@kristymoore7052 The base is used to dispose of old ordnance and that is why you hear those occassional booms. Nothing mysterious, they did it a lot more in the 70s as some WWII ordinance was becoming unstable and dangerous. They also did experiments with new explosives. A friend of mine was a conscientious objector and chemist and that is where the Army sent him. He was the one who told me some of what they do there. It isn't like it's Area 51.

@@jazzcatt I still use my 1995 Chevy G20 conversion van. Comfortable, but limited with only two wheel drive.
Takes a little getting used to. And I can sleep anywhere.

I just spent sometime at my land tent camping in Northern NM. Being by yourself is a little wierd but I also love it. I did some videos and a blog on it area. Love what you do, keep it up!

Wonderhussy, been watching your videos on and off for about a year and just subscribed recently but this is the first time you have been to a place I've been to several times over the last fifteen years or so. I recognized it as soon as I saw the cabin. I'm guessing you didn't find the geocache hidden just under the front of the cabin to the left. Also you didn't mention the old log cabin just up from the cabin at about the the top of that clear area above the cabin. There is only a few logs left to each wall now. The road continues up the canyon but is pretty much a ATV trail. I have never stayed at the cabin because we always camp in our motorhomes and trailers just the other side of the highway at the pass there just behind a hill just out of view of the highway. This is a pretty "sweet" area if you know what I mean. This is a nice place to go when the temperatures are high in the lower altitudes during the summer. Keep up the good work and thanks for a look at some of the places I haven't been able to get to yet.

I found a cabin that looked just like that in the woods. I was about to open the door to check it out but heard a woman talking to herself inside. Freaked me out so bad I spent the night in the woods with the bears.

I know exactly where that cabin is. Been there 6-7 times over the years. If you check the cabin log book you'll find my name or K6TPK, listed numerous times. One time I came up there in my FJ40 Land Cruiser and manged to get up the road on the other side of the creek since it was a drought yr and water level was way down. Found some nice iron ore specimens that I have out in my front yard. Normally, the water is too deep to ford, but you can hike up the road. That road isn't all that bad coming up to the cabin. It used to be a lot worse back in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Another good place to visit is Boulder Flat which is not too far up the hiway from where the cabin is. I'm a long-time member of the Mono Lake Committee and knew David Gaines well. Lee Vining is my favorite hangout spot to work out from. Haven't been back there since 2005 tho. I got lots of video and slides of the old cabin and that area in general. I love the Eastern Sierra and have been prospecting and investigating old mines/camps since 1972. Love your vids, especially the one at your Mom's place in Norcal. I got 2 huge Sequoia Sempervirens growing in my yard. Planted them in 1976 when I moved to Clyde (North Concord).

I think I already said this once, and I'll say it again, Please Sarah, "GET A WINCH PUT ON YOUR TRUCK" lol Always be prepared when alone out there, that winch, if nothing else, will save you a ton of time not having to wait for a tow or other help. Great vlog as always, be safe
No cell signal- no towtruck. Get a winch,
Winch saved me many times in my old Jeep, on the list for the new one
Get a receiver put on the Front of your truck if possible and a Winch mounted on a 2" hitch so you could position it at front or rear of vehicle. You have been lucky so far.... I wouldn't go in that cold pool, even with You nekkid! Always tell someone responsible where you are going.
She's been doing this so long. All of her good freinds are in the know about where and how she is doing. I bet.

It's kind of funny, I'm my best company, too. I like being with other people but when I explore I like to be by myself. I know it's not the safest thing to do, but I like imagining I'm the first human to see things. If I had a cabin like this I would live there fulltime. I'm like Huell Howser and so are you, I'm just delighted and amazed when I see neat things.

I stayed in that cabin in 1974 with my friend Dave Denton in a Spring snow storm. It wasn't QUITE abandoned because as we were setting up for dinner a grizzled old mountain hermit came back and told us to vacate the premises with a few profanities thrown in. We didn't think it belonged to him and told him we were not leaving because of the weather or else we'd be happy to leave. He got pissed and pulled and .45 Colt on us and told us to go. I pulled out my 44 mag and Dave pulled out his piss poor H&K 22. The ole hermit said, "Shit! You got me, you can spend the night!"
I told him,"Fine, but give me your .45 first" and he gave it to us. His name was "Bud", he wouldn't give us his real name, but he was happy as Hell because we brought Jim Beam Bourbon. He actually supported himself by gold panning and selling handmade wood trinkets he carved during the long winters. He thought we were going to steal his food supplies.
My guess was that he was an escaped convict hiding in the mountains. We never said anything to anyone at the time. Figured that he didn't shoot us outright so he wasn't that bad, bet that grave is his.

There were many times I was camping and a cabin like that would have been better than a three star hotel. Thanks for the video tour. Every mountain cabin needs a field trauma kit for those paper cuts on the Pamela Anderson notebook. That hot water heater is equiped with too many bullet and buckshot holes.
