John had mouth cancer and part of his jaw removed. The removal and reconstruction surgery took over 13 hours with lots of follow up sugeries and skin grafts and months of rehab. Fortunately they got all the cancer and he is now cancer free. His family have said that he can actually still sing. But we doubt he will ever perform publicly again. John is one very strong and resilient man and you just never know, he might surprise us yet. But at 75 he has well and truly deserved his retirement if that's what he decides to do. We are just thankful that he has recovered ❤❤❤
My father had the same cancer and I am too well aware of what John went through. I just wonder how his eating is, my father had to adapt and there are foods he can’t eat because of lack of saliva and just the whole lower jaw being different
The guitarist is Brett Garsed, an Australian musician and songwriter, best known for his work as a guitarist with John Farnham and T. J. Helmerich, as well as being a former member of the American band Nelson.
John always had a spectacular voice and just perfected it over the decades. He also had the best musicians and backing singers. His shows were always the best ever. And to top it off, he is one of the nicest people you could ever meet. That's why we love him.
"When the War Is Over" is a song by Australian band Cold Chisel from their 1982 album Circus Animals. The song was written by drummer Steve Prestwich (RIP) and was also released by Little River Band in 1986 when John Farnham fronted them.
Brad, great reaction to a powerful song about soldiers returning fron Vietnam and going through PTSD. John had cancer of the jaw and is now cancer free and he can still sing as he does around the house. As to if he will ever perform in public again is a different story. We certainly hope so.
So glad you reacted to this particular performance. He was 54 at this time. You are so right about the depth of feeling John can generate with his voice. It isn’t about the belts, it’s the whole composition including the way he works with his musicians, who he loves and respects and many have been with him for years. He always acknowledges their work. Brett Garsed’s work in this particular song really supports the lyrics … the cry of the guitar. Hope you get the chance to go back and listen to it without interruption. John has recovered from cancer in his jaw with a full reconstruction needed and rehab to talk and eat again. Will we ever hear him again? We all hope so, but when you watch him sing, you can see the work his jaw is doing to help create the tone. Anyway, we have decades of his work to play on repeat.
Ain't nobody gonna steal that voice away! The only blessing, for his fans, is that his body of work since the late 60"s is on UA-cam and, for John, the cancer came at the end of his career not earlier. So pleased to hear that the cancer his in remission and he actually can sing if he wishes.
Brett Garsed has been a guitarist for John for many years. There was a period in the middle, though, where he was a guitarist in Nelson. When that ran its course, he came back to playing with John. It goes without saying that an artist of the calibre of John Farnham would have a band that is also near the top of the tree.
I saw John in concert in 2019 and his voice was just as powerful. It was a “bucket list” worthy concert. He is Australia’s national treasure. This is a Cold Chisel song that is so well loved here down under. Loved your reaction and recognition of our Farnsey.
It is so worth checking out John singing whose loving you live at his 50 th birthday with human nature ….its amazing I think he might go higher ❤love your reaction as always❤❤
You're so right. I have seen John sing live many times and watches every video that's out there. I have never heard him sing a bum note. On the other hand, forgetting the lyrics..hmm well that's a different story lol. ❤❤
I have forgotten the number of John Farnham concerts my wife and I have been to, they have always been beyond our expectations. I am currently in rehearsals with a choral group for a concert in early September where I will be taking the lead in this song, so nervous that I can do justice to it.
The female backup singer that you mostly hear in this song was in a the "sadie the cleaning lady" video. Yes her mother was the dancer and was pregnant with her at the time even though you can't tell.
That’s why Australians consider him a National Treasure, and what you see is what he is like all the time no ego always acknowledges the band and singers.
I was at that concert. It was one of John’s first Last Time concerts, he was going to retire. He performed for at least 2 hours and stopped for 10 minutes in the middle to change into dry clothes. The last time I saw him sing was with Celine Dion when he was 70 or 71. Just before COVID. He had a number of goodbye tours and we were grateful. John had mouth and jaw cancer. He had 26 surgeons remove it and rebuild his face. His voice is the same. Thank you.
Hi Brad 👋 Thanks for reacting to more Farnsey 😊 This performance is so beautiful. The way John just builds and builds to those crazy high notes takes your breath away ❤ John brings out all the emotions every time he sings, but this particular performance is on another level for me. I think the song resonates more with John being that bit older, though he still performed for nearly 20 more years after this!! Such a legend 😊 The band and backing vocals are just perfect- that Brett Garsed on guitar is so good!! Thank you for appreciating John and his band. Loved your song once again. Nice and cruisy this time - love that 😊 You have such a lovely voice 👍 Can't wait for more Farnsey - I think you are getting well and truly hooked 😅❤❤
Yes John is great and I was lucky to see him perform on numerous occasions over the last 40 years. Always brilliant!! So good to see someone give compliments to his band and backing singers. Most of them have been with him for many many years which tells me he is also a great guy to work with. They too are all wonderful musicians.
Hi Brad and my fellow Farnsey fans. Wonderful reaction Brad. Thankyou - yes, he is just phenomenal, the power, passion, the emotion, the audience drawing in. Natural God given talent - cant get a bad note - so true ♥️💗❤️
Hey Brad, great reaction to our amazing John. It was actually cancer of the jaw and he is now cancer free!! His family have said that he ok and he is still singing around the house so maybe we might still hear him sing again. Also you have a great voice so more of your music please!!
One Aussie legend singing the song of another legendary Aussie band…. Farnsey, Barnsey & Mossy (from Cold Chisel)…. 3 legends, one phenomenal song! Please check out the version of this with Jimmy. John has always been an outlier….someone who is a phenomenal singer but decided to stay in his adopted home country instead of leaving to pursue fame internationally, a man with no ego whatsoever WYSIWYG, an artist who has always seen his band members (from every iteration from original solo 1960’s to LRB to Whispering Jack and onward) and his backing singers as family. This is why we love our John, this is why he is a legend!!! ❤
I've seen him numerous times in my life and he is one very special human! We love him here in Australia, he's our icon. Absolutely a freak of a singer and a damn good human! Such a shame about his mouth cancer, when life is really unfair. But we still have him, so that's a blessing
John is the greatest and most versatile male vocalist of all time. And this version of the iconic song is imo the best ever, it’s just epic the power, passion and emotion he puts into this and every performance. Incredible. And Brett Garsed on guitar, brilliant as usual. And if you want to see Brett play so really special guitar you need to have a look at “let me out” live from John and co.
Yes! That guitar solo in Let Me Out is insane 👍 One of the best. I also love the solo he does in the intro of We're No Angels from the MSO concert. Brett just kills it 😊❤
@@AnnieD.1982 totally agree and also in it’s a long way to the top(if you want to rock n roll) with the mso in Melbourne, and well everything hi plays is great. And the black dog sound check one that was luckily recorded and John in that was insane, and to think he uses that song as a warm up song. Incredible.
@beresfordthompson1370 Couldn't agree more. That version of Long Way To The Top is incredible. Good for lifting your spirits 😃 Farnham's version of Black Dog is one of the best things I have ever heard. To think it was completely live and only a warm-up.... truly mind-blowing!!! 👍 😲 I think it is far better than the original! Controversial but I don't care!! 😁
@@AnnieD.1982 totally agree, better than original and yes it was, from what I’ve heard just a fluke. John and band use it to warm up and it was like and one of the crew just happened to hit record, amazing.
Had a private concert with him performing to us, and then a couple of hours of talking with him and sharing a few cold beers about 10 years ago. The man is a legend, and a properly fantastic bloke to hang out with. Humble, funny, delf-deprecating in his humour. A fantastic fella, let alone one of the greatest male voices of all time in my opinion.
Hi Brad. Thanks for reacting to John again. It's always a pleasure watching your reactions. I'm pretty sure there are some songs on youtube where John hits higher notes. Love your song as well, mate. 🤗
John's voice never changed, it's like a fine wine that gets better & better. Just hope that one day soon we'll be able to hear him sing again & grace us with his unforgettable voice & presence.❤
Thank you for your great reaction again and appreciation of our Phenomenal Aussie Legend, John Farnham! John is The GOAT and always has been for over 50 years. He had the most amazing bad of awesome talented musicians as well. Please watch many more of his hit songs and concerts from the past 4 decades. Enjoy.
The young girl you see singing back ground harmony it was her dream to sing with him Her mum was johns back up singer and performing while she was in her mums womb I seen the interview with her and john speaking about it Cheers mate 🦘🇦🇺👍
You want to hear Farnzy go higher you MUST react to 'Who's Loving You' Live with 'Human Nature' - John Farnham 50th Birthday Concert & 'Georgia On My Mind' - Live circa 1970's.........can't remember the name of the show. I eagerly await your reactions. Enjoy mate!
It was mouth cancer and he has been recovering after surgery. One of his sons has said that he is singing around the house again. So, you never know. He might just do some more live shows. As I believe that singing is more a compulsion with John, he may well do another comeback. 😊
I know it has been a year so maybe you dont remember but you reacted to the original performers (albeit not thier original performance) by Cold Chisel Live 2003.
John's does the best cover of this song, but nobody does it better than Cold Chisel, who's song this was. I'm pretty sure you have reacted to Cold Chisel singing this at the 2003 Cold Chisel Ringside live.
He CAN still sing and does so around the house according to his sons and close friends, but we don't know to what extent. But yeah, he had had a sore cheek, trouble sleeping on his side, when he went to a dentist appt, they said he had an ulcer and needed to get it checked out, so he did and it was cancerous, this was all around the time Olivia Newton John died, so with her being such a good friend, he knew she would want him to get it treated, so it really pushed him. Sadly cos he left it so long it had spread a lot and into his jaw, needing 12+ hours of surgery and a long stay in hospital after, a lot of oncoming surgeries after the main one so he wouldn't be left disfigured...but it wasn't for certain if he would even survive the surgery at first, but thankfully he made it and is just enjoying the home life as he always did, only "coming out to play" when he had albums or tours to promote! He always enjoyed his little patch of serenity.
This is not a happy song it's a sad song it's all about the 1 2 veitnam war when John farnham points to he's heart that what ther soldiers heart you have to listen properly to the lyrics of the song because it will make you cry
