Jan, I have had my R6 II for six months and never really bothered with a deep dive into the menu system. This was exactly what I needed. Thank you so much!
I decided to rent a Canon R6 Mark 2 and it arrived today. After using your settings, I am simply amazed at the quality of photos taken of my Macaw family. I ordered an Canon R3 yesterday, so by the time it arrives on Monday, setting it up should be very easy. Thank you for all the help and coaching my friend!
I've recently began practicing wildlife photography by photographing water fowl. I wondered why only a few of my photos were sharp, but most of my others were slightly blurry using the RF 100 - 400 lens. From this video, now I see that there are extra settings I have active that may have slowed my camera and affected my images. Thanks for this!
Perfect timing for this video Jan. I just purchased the R6 Mark II and this video is extremely helpful in setting it up for wildlife photography.. Thanks a ton for sharing the video!
Hi Jan Just brought this camera yesterday and it's a revelation after my 1DX ii. Thanks so much for the set up guide Jan. I followed your settings but changed a few things: I've set up the custom buttons to vary the fps with C1 set for 20 fps and Electronic shutter, C2 again e shutter but 40 fps and C3 mechanical shutter 12 fps. I've also programmed the AF point selection AF point selection button as a 3rd back button set to All area tracking. Looking forward to your review of the RF 200-800 which I'm considering buying. Cheers Noel
Thanks Jan for this setup vid. Got me going with my new R6II. I've gone with a triple back button Focus. Seems like a great way of taking advantage of the AF options it has. So flexible I love it.
I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on this camera - this video seems invaluable for setting it up to do bird photography and especially BIF. Great job, Jan!
Only just bought the R6m2, (coming from a Fujifilm X-T5, and it is REALLY quite different!) so I very much appreciate this video as there are not many videos about the R6m2 to do with setting up for bird/wildlife shooting. I shall have to watch it again as it's a lot to take in.
Great video! There were so many aspects of the settings I was unsure about that you touched on. i will definitely be utilizing a lot of the changes you suggest. Thank you!
I have just got my R6 mkii from a 7d ii and 5d iv. Glad I found your video to set up for the new camera.have followed your advise and setting so this weekend I have a good base set up. Thank you.
Just received my R6 m2. Your explanation was clear and concise. ( I did follow the transcript during your video and paused to catch up). This had to have been my easiest set up of a new camera. Kudos. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Your videos for my R6MK2 and the R7 were excellent for both Bird and Sports action photography. But the best feature was the setup PDF guides allowing me to setup the cameras without going all thre the videos each time … the setup guides were well worth the small amount of money …. Well done
Very clear video. Just switched from Nikon to Canon and always used back button focus. This video helped me a lot to get my my settings right... Thank you!!!
Very grateful for your thorough screen-by-screen settings review. I was having serious trouble understanding the adapting the new focus features. I 'm been accosted to simple siingle-point focusing with my 5D Mark 2s.
I find Jan I play back your guide videos in 1/2 speed and I can follow the button changing instructions :-) and still understand what you're saying too. Thanx
This is a video I needed. My whole life I had ancient cameras. Which I loved and proved it is not about the gear. Cost a lot of sweat and postprocessing to show that old cameras with a prime are more than competitive. 20D, 30D and last 10 years 5D Classic (2005 manufacture date). Two days ago I picked up R6ii and holy moly. Milions of features which do the job for you. Literally. 5Dc could only point with one cross type middle focus point and then you recomposed the frame. Slow fps. Limited DR etc. Now I feel like in startrek 😅
@@HerringLiz Congrats, good for you :) I have 2 5D Classics. One is very used and one is like brand new. Gonna keep it and make it a museum artifact :)
I have just got an R8 and as expected, 90% of the set up you have used in this video also applies to the new R8. Great work thanks Jan, that has save me a load of time and made my workflow much easier 😊
I found this video extremely helpful. How might you change these settings when shooting stills of sports? Ie. if subjects were wearing helmets making eye detection more difficult.
oh my gosh turning off whole area tracking servo AF saved me from going insane!!! Why do they ship cameras with the most jacked up settings? Thanks again you're a lifesaver!!!
Excellent video. While reading the manual is always helpful, having a video with detail settings and rationale really helps me make informed decisions on the settings that are right for me. Thanks very much.
Thank you Jan, got my R6 mk2 yesterday this was super helpful being a motorsport shooter i love my single point AF on track, but in the pits I take photos of people so having eyeAF available quickly and easily will be a massive help
Thanks for this! I'm a bit late to this party, but I've kept using my R7 for birds, but with the 200-800 I've moved to using my R6II and wanted to come up with advice on the AF modes. There's one notable difference in the setup I like: since (as you suggest) I don't use the record button in stills mode, I reassign the "dial func" menu (normally on the M-Fn button) to that button. Then the M-Fn button I set to the tracking toggle, which you have set to the DOF preview button. THEN I use the DOF preview as a panic button, in case something unexpected suddenly happens. This "panic button" mode switches to a different AF setup entirely, trying to pick up a subject in the entire field of view, and widening the acceptable exposure settings. Then if I'm busy trying to get a nice, careful shot of some nesting GBHs in one direction and I suddenly hear a bald eagle making a raid on the rookery, I can pivot, hit the panic button, and hope to grab something.
Hi, I'm in the orange settings and when I try to use the back button customize section, I don't have the AF button to select on my dialfor eye checking. I don't have a couple of the options (I did scroll down and I didn't see them)
I like how you went through all the settings, but I think the title of this clip is a lil misleading. I mainly shoot people, weddings, portraits and adult images. These settings a aimed more for the wildlife, nature and landscape photography and not the settings that I would want shooting a wedding, or in a studio with lights.
His settings are great for all round photography but where it differ would be with events and portraits in regards to the AF / Metering / Eye Focus / Shutter Buttons. When shooting fast-moving events and portrait sessions, it can cause some setbacks. Outside of that, everything is solid.
Not aimed at landscape photography at all, Automatic eye tracking, AI Servo mode, electronic shutter 40 frames a second , Back button AF are all the preserve of Sport and Wildlife photographers, Landscape photographers only require very basic settings, would generally use mechanical shutter, and One shot mode, no need for back button AF altho that would be a personal choice.of the individual, He's basically set up the camera to specifically suit his type of photography, as he's primarily a wildlife photographe, these settings would also be useful for Sports photography, but not for Landscape photography.
Thank you for the best instructional video I have ever seen! I only take photos/videos of my Macaw parrot family, both outdoors and indoors. I have used a Canon 1Dx Mark 2 since 2016, and with the new eye tracking function and 4K video abilities, it is time to move up to either an R3 or an R6 Mark 2. I just rented an R6 Mark 2 and it should arrive in 2 days, so this video will be a lifesaver! Thank you very much!
Great video, I definietely will come back to - thank you for sharing the settings, thats how I learn best when I can see various settings in comparison to what I am using myself. LOVE bird photography so this is very helpful!!!
Setting up my new R6M2 today -- my first mirrorless -- using your settings. Great video overall; thanks especially for explaining dual back-button focusing two and three times as you progress through the menus. Question about IS modes on the Canon 100-400 EF L ii lens, which I'll be using with dual back-button focusing as you suggest, with the R6M2 and EF-to-RF adapter: Which lens IS mode is best for hummingbirds moving erratically -- 2 or 3?
This is a highly useful guide and I am going to make some changes. I have been having a great deal of difficulty since acquiring the R6ii and 100-500 Canon lens, specifically with birds in flight and even aircraft at air shows. I am either unable to grab focus or constantly losing it. I previously had a 7Dii w/ Canon 100-400ii, and I had none of these issues. It’s been so aggravating that I am concerned I made a big mistake moving to mirrorless. Any additional assistance is appreciated.
looks like shooting quick birds has made you fast, too. I had to stop and repeat the video several times.😃 So it was very good to have the chapters. Thank you for your efforts. This will definitely help me to get a better understanding of the camera.
You put a lot of work into this... Thank you. I'm still working with a 5D3 that was purchased at rollout, but I am looking ahead. Your video is most helpful.
Very thorough video thank you. Watched originally to confirm that R6 MK II I'm looking at buying will allow shutter button to be reconfigured as video start (it does). Massive bonus though was when you briefly mentioned the "Movie Servo AF Speed" this is really useful for slow focus pulls when videoing, and it turns out that my current EOS-R already has the feature but I hadn't realised!!! Thanks again.
Thanks for the exhaustive video, Jens. Just one thing - and I’m sure it’s because I missed something - I followed your instructions re back-button focusing, but now my R6 mk ii is no longer metering. What have I missed?
I am in the market to upgrade my D7 Mark II and this video has provided me with a wealth of information. I believe the R6 II is a good fit for me as primarly a bird/wildlife photographer. Thank you for the information.
Hi Jan, thanks for the great video. Just want to confirm your worklow on the field. Please correct me if I am wrong. By default you have the AF set to (Spot focus, Servo, Eye detection-off, tracking-off, subject detection-animal). You set the focus point either using the joy stick or top-right corner of the screen. Hit the "*" button to acquire focus. Hit the "AF-ON" button to enable eye detection. Hit the front button to enable/disable tracking. The last 2 buttons not necessarily in the same order. This would really help understand your workflow. I own a R7 and would like to see if your workflow helps me improve my keeper rate. Thnx in advance👍
I usually only hit the AF-on button and only when the eye tracking doesn’t find the bird or misses I will use the * button. The button on the front I almost never use
Alas, the R6 Mark II is out of my price range, but I have pre-ordered the R8 and I think I can leverage at least some of this for that camera, since it shares the same sensor and AF system. Thank you!
Excellent setup. Even when I change it, at least I understand why. I am coming from the Nikon menu system, so this was rather different. I call Nikon a "side-menu" and the Canon a "top-menu." I wish they had a way to save the settings to a card.
Thank you for a great (but very fast video with lots of pausing :)). I haven´t tried back button focus before because I think my hands are too small to handle it but I´ve decided to give it a go anyway. So to my question. When i focus with the star for eye fokus the square is very big. I hade it on auto since i photograf both animals and people. I tried to change it to animals but still got that big square not letting me know it really just have the focus on the eye and not the whole face (tried on my dog). Did I miss something?
Hi Jan, Great video and helped me a lot with my upgrade from Canon EOS60D! I only started playing around with it this afternoon to learn to use it (watching your video) and am concerned by the whirring noise it makes when I switch it on (no rattling when it's switched off as somebody else mentioned). Is this normal? Or did I buy a lemon?
Great video, Jan. Thanks for all your fantastic footage. I really enjoy watching all of them, even the ones that are not too relevant to me, like this one for instance (I own the R5). I will re-watch the R5 settings video. So far, I was unable to assign the depth of field button with the wide autofocus tracking on my R5, which is something that I used on my 5Div before I changed to the R5.
Please tell me, I have a Canon 5 d m3. I want to change it to mirrorless. Initially R6m2 or Sony a 7m4. Or should I buy the R5 right away? Sony a7mr5. I can buy a camera once and I won't be able to anymore. There is a Canon 24-105 L 1 lens of the first version. Megapixels are welcome
Thanks. I bought your PDF. Much easier that start and stop video. Help! I had my 5D4 set so C1 did a three shot bracket. I switch to C1 and press the shutter and it did three images automatically. I have on my new R6 Mark II C1 set to a three shot bracket but I can't figure out how to make it do all three shots with one shutter push. I set it up on y 5D4 many years ago and I nit longer can figure out the setting. Can you help please!
Hi Jan, I´m considering to buy the R6 Mark II so my boys can come along with me and start enjoying being out. I went to a nearby shop and while I was having the camera on my hands I notice if you shake a camera just a little bit you hear a noise like something is loose inside. I don´t know anyone that have that camera. Is that what you can experience on yours as well? Thank you.
I'm trying to understand the "retract lens on power off" thing. Does the RF 35mm F1.8 extend automatically? I have an EF 24-70 that extends manually for zoom (also an EF 70-200). Will this lens be ok if I disable "retract lens on power off"? I'm guessing it's different because it dows not extend to focus, only to zoom, whereas the RF 35mm doesn't zoom. Great video, thanks!
Great video! Been waiting for this... I had mine set to most of your recommended settings and your video filled in the blanks to make it perfect. However, I did find one quirk that I hope you can explain and show a fix for. At 22:00, you show how to set up the star button. This works great when shooting horizontal but If I go vertical, it stops working and seems to go to a wide area multi-point AF.
Hi! I don't recommend using cRAW, take a couple of shots with dark exposure in RAW and cRAW, and then add the exposure in Ligntroom to normal. After that, zoom in on these two pictures and see what happens there. cRAW saves pictures with some strange step of skipping between pixels. And if you have such a situation where you accidentally take an important shot with underexposure, then this picture will already be unsuitable for work. And it happened that you want to tighten the shadows and there is a mess of pixels. So, RAW only ;) Thank you for this video, it's useful!
I did all the tests and find the difference negligible. The only real IQ difference I see is between the 14 bit mechanical shutter and 12 bit electronic, that is a lot more.
Great video and love the info and now I have to make some adjustments to my setup. I love my R6II and newly acquired EF 600mm F/4 IS II. I'm shooting stills 95-99% of the time but have found myself shooting some 180fps videos too (a few examples on my channel). Maybe I'll start editing videos in the future.
Quick question for you.. In photo mode, I want to be able to just press the record button and record video. I was told this will default to the video settings that are saved in move mode, in C3. So, I flip the camera to movie mode, set the exposure the way I want for video and save in c3. Great. Then, back to photo-mode and off I go taking photos. When I press the record button, it starts shooting video, but its not at all the settings I saved. Its in some type of auto mode? Its weird. How can I fix this?
Ah! Okay, well that would explain it then. I guess on the R6 II it's less of an issue (now that I think about it) as there is a dedicated button to switch over, so I guess I could just get the video settings the way I want first, in that mode, switch to photo, shoot etc.. then, its just a matter of flipping the switch to switch over and start recording. Still pretty fast.@@jan_wegener

There's one notable difference in the setup I like: since (as you suggest) I don't use the record button in stills mode, I reassign the "dial func" menu (normally on the M-Fn button) to that button. Great video, very helpful, May I suggest using the SET button to review photos. It's very handy and if you accidentally tap it, no changes are made.
Best camera ever
Thank you so much Jan for the detailed video 🙏🤗
Glad it was helpful!
such an amazing setting well done keep it up! one question we don't have to save the settings after it's done?
No they stay that way once put in u less you reset the camera etc
@@jan_wegener appreciate it. I couldn’t find the contract, saturation- - - on this camera any advice please 🙏

@@jan_wegener I see thanks again!!
What a helpful and informative video! Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Great video mate! 👍
Thanks! 👍
Excellent setup. Even when I change it, at least I understand why. I am coming from the Nikon menu system, so this was rather different. I call Nikon a "side-menu" and the Canon a "top-menu." I wish they had a way to save the settings to a card.
Does nobody manually focus their camera anymore? This was a very helpful video as I just bought this camera
No 😄
Thanks Jan, I get my R6 MII next week can’t wait to set it up and start shooting, all wildlife very active now in the breeding season. 👀👀
Congrats! You will enjoy it
Jan, Thank you for sharing these settings. I am still learning what works for me best. It is definitely a journey :-)
I set it up like this and it works good, I do notice though the when using the EF600/4II with the 1,4ext it is annoyingly slow to focus
That’s the lens and extender tho unfortunately
Thank you for a great (but very fast video with lots of pausing :)). I haven´t tried back button focus before because I think my hands are too small to handle it but I´ve decided to give it a go anyway. So to my question. When i focus with the star for eye fokus the square is very big. I hade it on auto since i photograf both animals and people. I tried to change it to animals but still got that big square not letting me know it really just have the focus on the eye and not the whole face (tried on my dog). Did I miss something?
Great video. How is your background so blurry?
Long lenses

Hi Jan, Great video and helped me a lot with my upgrade from Canon EOS60D! I only started playing around with it this afternoon to learn to use it (watching your video) and am concerned by the whirring noise it makes when I switch it on (no rattling when it's switched off as somebody else mentioned). Is this normal? Or did I buy a lemon?
Yes, probably the Ibis and sensor clean, too
@@jan_wegener Thanks, that's a relief to know!
Thank you Jan !
You're welcome!
Keep ruling Jan! Couple of theses changes help my r5
Hi mate I have just set myR62 up like you have how does it work when there is more than one brids in flight
Can be hard to pick on
Hi. I've just got the r6II and I noticed that tracking is not working with any lens if I don't activate the "Preview AF" in the menu n.3 of AF section
I'm newbie in wildlife photography, and also with the R6 MII so this video feels like the Holy Grial for me!! Thanks so much ❤
Glad it was helpful!
Jan, the dot (like how it appears at 05:55) inside the focusing point/square is missing in my camera..how to get it back...?
Hi Mike, Jan has it on the very last one (Spot AF), is it possible you might have it set to the second one (1-Point AF)
It will also disappear if it’s not in the center
@@jan_wegener ahhhhh Jan, I never knew that 😊
@@Bassmunchkin1 Terry and Jan thanks... yes when I moved the point (spot AF) with multi controller / joy stick the dot in the centre disappears..
@@tonygreenmike it seems we both learnt loads of excellent tips and suggestions today from the master 👍
Simply awesome ! Thanks Jan :)
Glad you liked it!
Yes, it affects lenses where you don’t manually zoom, but the lens protrudes in an out by itself basically
Great video! Been waiting for this... I had mine set to most of your recommended settings and your video filled in the blanks to make it perfect. However, I did find one quirk that I hope you can explain and show a fix for. At 22:00, you show how to set up the star button. This works great when shooting horizontal but If I go vertical, it stops working and seems to go to a wide area multi-point AF.
probably the setting for different Af points/zones messing with you in the pink menu
@@jan_wegener You're amazing! That was it. AF menu #4, Orientation Linked AF point. Thanks!
So, RAW only ;)
Thank you for this video, it's useful!
I did all the tests and find the difference negligible. The only real IQ difference I see is between the 14 bit mechanical shutter and 12 bit electronic, that is a lot more.
Great video. This will be very helpful for all the R6II users!
I hope so!
That only works on the R5 and R3, not the other bodies unfortunately
Still pretty fast.@@jan_wegener
great tips Jan !
thank you very much 🙏
I'm gonna make a few changes to my autofocus settings right away 💫
Glad it was helpful!
Great video! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
