The blight is insight (again). Not part of the original design and the origin of the fire, the spire has been included in the restoration to it's detriment. The conservative restoration means that timber and lead will be used for the framework and the roofing, foregoing the opportunity to use safer, more sophisticated modern materials (like gluelam oak and copper tiles). The use of lead is particularly sensitive because of its toxicity and a clean-up mess from the original roof. This is the site that used innovation (of its time) to build higher and thinner to create this masterpiece, why not re-build for future generations?
