The best part of visiting Catedral de Segrada Familia was the workshop of Antoni Gaudi in the undercroft. Unlike older cathedrals, with their gothic arches requiring flying buttresses to keep standing, the arches of Segrada Familia were designed by constructing a model upside down, where the arches were simulated by chains dangling in catenary curves, thus creating a self-supporting structure. Both architectural and structural brilliance unprecedented for Gaudi's era in late 1800s, and early 1900s.
Wow so unique and a vision over 100 years ago as started....as a tourist & undergrad Architect student I toured it back in 1980. Now my career is semi retired and still waiting for 2026 completion! I think the great Cologne Gothic cathedral in Germany took about 400 years to complete as did a lot of the other big cathedrals -even St Peter's in Rome took hundreds of years.
I have been to the Sagrada Familia twice. The first time in the 60's when it was just a facade; a huge doorway with nothing behind it! and the second time about 20 years ago when it was about half way finished! It is one of the most stunning buildings in the world. It's unbelievably, jaw-droppingly beautiful!!! Can't wait to see it finished! 🏗🕍 :)
Until the city does not find a solution for the city block where the main entrance is supposed to be the Sagrad Familia will unfortunately stay unfinished forever.
I have not visited Spain .Gaudi and his church were mentioned in my architecture lecture class. In my opinion of one : it always reminded of a melted candle ,it does not have the soaring spirituality of the Gothic nor the clean lines and open construction of modernism. It does have the same over the top excesses of the Baroque. None the less, It is a architectural marvel .
How can you talk about the shape and unique load bearing ability of the support columns and not show the upside down hanging string model on display which was used to work out how to form them?
Yes, seeing that model was the best part of the experience of visiting Segrada Familia, at least in 1987 when I was there. And they aren't "leaning columns" they are "caternary curves" the same as fine chains of the upside down model assume, which made the forms self-supporting without needing flying buttresses.
I think it's wonderful that there's such a monument to Christianity in the tradition of European cathedrals. It's revolutionary, extraordinarily beautiful, and devotional. A remarkable testament in the modern age.
The Sagrada de Familia is far from being finished. The main building will be finished in a few years but the main entrance to it is uncomplete because it will require the removal of many buildings and the street where the entrance will exist. This means 3,000 people and all the businesses along that street will have to be relocated and a long legal battle could take many years in order to complete the entrance. Since the vision of Gaudi was lost during the Civil War that completely destroyed his architectural plans, there is a fight going on about what that vision should be in the future. All they have are photos of Gaudi's model but not all the land around the Basilica.
Gaudi was a genius with a great artistic aesthetic .an engineer inventor and pioneer. just think kids he did this with NO computer NO AI bs -only the one in his head! his followers have to use the latest tools in computing to complete his original designs
The Glory Façade will take a while as the entranceway will be the most complex of the three, in addition to its four termite mound-like towers which must match those of the other two façades.
theres actually and issue about edning the basilica. which is that the rear of the building should be made with a stairs of (aprox) 10 meters, which right now is not posible due to the buildings next to it with a separation of less than 10 meters
A stunning achievement with stone from all over the world and funding from many people around the world. A truly world-class artistic concern, showing what GOOD can be carried out if we all worked together towards improving everyone's lives, instead of global destructive forces... war... transgression... demolition and dismantling of positive traditions... or political "leaders" taking pride for what they do not deserve: La Sagrada Familia belongs to the whole of mankind!! ❤🌍🌎🌏🙌
As if you are going to casually stroll about and suddenly cone up this colossal structure. It can be seen from all parts and everyone knows it’s in Barcelona.
Conceived by a genius, built out of unwavering faith by members of Catalonia's large Sacred Family. I am a bit puzzled by the building licence episode at this stage of development. Has this been verified?
An amazing engineering marvel, is anyone planning on visiting this?

When I was young it was estimated that it would take 200 years to complete
I think it's wonderful that there's such a monument to Christianity in the tradition of European cathedrals. It's revolutionary, extraordinarily beautiful, and devotional. A remarkable testament in the modern age.
142 years to build and it still looks like something from Ender's Game.
This is so amazing. I am to old to make the journey there.
it does qualify to be in the next categories of " wonders of the world"...
Thumbnail makes the cathedral look like a planet based pulse laser defense system powering up to launch a bolt of energy at a target in orbit. 😂
That's like right out of the "Lord of the Rings".. invokes images of Minas Tirith a little bit.
I’m not too crazy about the look of the outside, but the inside is nice and the engineering is cool.
View City beautiful
Gaudi was a genius with a great artistic aesthetic .an engineer inventor and pioneer.
just think kids he did this with NO computer NO AI bs -only the one in his head!
his followers have to use the latest tools in computing to complete his original designs
Outside is amazing. Inside looks like a 2-day drywall project covered in ceiling white.
Should have got the Polish in to build it - Would have it built in 6 months 😁
Can´t wait to hear Ganon's concert once finished
What a magnificent tribute to the worshippers' faith in God!
I am not religious in any way but I felt quite emotional when I entered, I will go and see it when it’s finished
Cologne Cathedral took much longer to complete. Some beautiful things just need some time it seems.
The Glory Façade will take a while as the entranceway will be the most complex of the three, in addition to its four termite mound-like towers which must match those of the other two façades.
Just great!
This is my favorite structure on the Earth.
Catalans are a great nation!
A great Spanish region indeed... and also grateful for the tons of money donated by citizens from all over the world!! 👏👏👏👏
..every square inch of city is covered in buildings here...probably for all eternity . Perfect place for an Iconic Cathedral...!
theres actually and issue about edning the basilica. which is that the rear of the building should be made with a stairs of (aprox) 10 meters, which right now is not posible due to the buildings next to it with a separation of less than 10 meters
The quarry where they get the stone for this is in Lancashire.
Very impressive.
As if you are going to casually stroll about and suddenly cone up this colossal structure. It can be seen from all parts and everyone knows it’s in Barcelona.
The only problem I can see is the grand staircase in the front
you're right. City Hall corruption
Conceived by a genius, built out of unwavering faith by members of Catalonia's large Sacred Family. I am a bit puzzled by the building licence episode at this stage of development. Has this been verified?
Just one question, do they celebrate mass there? That is the real miracle. God bless!
This proves something.
So anyone could get a job building it ??? ... 😮 Wow !!! Impressive !!!
