I’ve discovered that the tremolo still sounds off here and I was able to figure out what Mark is doing to get the sound he gets. He’s actually using the high e and b string. It’s hard to explain by text but you have the proper notes here you just need to also pick the b string with your thumb. Make a d minor shape starting at the 8th freight (you don’t need your middle finger here though, just your pointer and ring finger. Pointer on e string 8th fret, ring on b string 10th fret). Hold this position as you go up and down the neck using your thumb to pick the b string and your other three fingers to tremolo the e string. Hope this is helpful.
@@patienthands Correct, they will be the same note which allows the b string to sustain while striking the e string with your, i, m, a fingers. Try it out, I would like to know your thoughts, while tuning down to how he plays it and playing along, I’m convinced that this is how he’s doing it. So, trying to be as clear as possible, starting position: pointer finger on the e string, 8th fret, ring finger on the b string, 10th fret then work your way up and down the frets.

I stopped playing and singing for a few years now, but now I am more motivated to pick up lessons and improve. I've definitely missed the self-healing that playing music gives. I'm getting the hang of this already in 2 days but the triplet is very difficult, especially trying to sing and play the triplet at the same time. Thank you Sensei!🐱👤
Thanks for your comment Dylan. I was self-taught as well. Didn't take a lesson til I was 26. It certainly helped, but I only had a few sessions. My playing dramatically improved when I got myself a hand-made guitar. You can hear and feel everything so much better with a nice instrument. It wasn't expensive, it was less than an intro Taylor. But anyway. I guess I find you just have to approach guitar with curiosity, to keep your interest. And along the way you develop your own set of first principles; your own method.

are you playing with a radiused capo? Look down your fretboard and check out the curvature. Classical guitar capos will be flat. What it sounds like is probably too much tension on the capo in the centre. Otherwise, could be a bad fret. Or just general intonation issues, but if your other frets are fine them in not sure.
Ugh, so good. Thank you. Saved to tutorials folder. Spent half my life as a lazy bedroom strummer and stopped for a few years. Yet recently, picking up the guitar again, I found a patience and confidence which had been missing before. Learned a couple of tunes I’d always figured were beyond my ability, kept at it ‘til it felt familiar, and now here I am, half wondering whether triplets are something I should even tackle at all. Seems unreachable. You teach it in a way that makes sense to me, though, so there’s hope. 😊
Been waiting for an aged for this tutorial, and you doing the lesson in perfect way, tons of thanks for that! Can’t wait to see another Mark Kozelek / RHP / SKM tutorial! 🙏🏻✨💖
I'm just now watching this, and this song is what got me playing guitar. I've looked at tabs, but it didn't help. But I'm starting to learn it because of you. Is there any chance you could also do Carissa by sun Kil moon?
Right? I blind A/B tested it with some solid body Martins in the store when I bought it, and preferred this one. Now I play a custom Halcyon from Vancouver, but this was my main guitar for five years.
@@patienthands only thing I have problems with are the triplets... most traditional fingerpicking comes naturally to me, or maybe I've just got it down by learning a lot of folk fingerstyle tunes from artists like Jansch , Kottke, Fahey ,etc.. ya know how it usually alternates back and forth from thumb to finger. but the triplets really just don't register with me... Any suggestions, tips, or exercises for getting over this? also isn't the "part we all want to learn this song for" literally constant triplets all on one string? do you play it thumb pointer middle ring? or backwards? like ring finger, middle, pointer? sorry i know this is a long comment. I guess I'm not so much concerned with how to play the song tab wise that all makes sense to me in my head. Its just the right hand that baffles me.
@@beemelonhead1 Okay so the actual tremolo picking on the 1st string, is strictly speaking not a triplet. You strike the string 4 times, first thumb, then ring, then middle, then index. Start slow. Play it gently, with the very tips of your fingers. It's easier on a nylon string if you have access to one. If this part is still giving you a hard time I suggest you look up a tutorial for tremolo picking for classical guitar. The triplets in the 'fun part' are the same as those in the verse. Are you struggling with the ones in the verse as well? Just think about picking 3 eighth notes in the time it usually takes to pick 2. And they are played thumb, index, ring. You can practice this right hand only on whichever strings you like. Just pluck them quickly in ascending order. Mute the strings with your left hand. So you only focus on your right. Do this at various speeds until it becomes second nature. I hope this helps!

Hey this tutorial is fantastic, thanks for sharing! Just a heads up, I don't think anyone is able to access the google doc you included with the tab. You might need to adjust the security settings, it's making me ask for access.
quick question: are you using your second finger to pick the E string? just used to using my third finger and wondering if it helps with the triplets to use your second finger, thanks!
Here I am using the second finger, but nowadays I use the third. I don't think there is any principled reason to use either, just do what is most comfortable and or sounds the best.
Maybe a helpful tip for playing the tremolo part: rather than 4 fingers repeated on the 1st string, thumb 2nd string 2 frets higher and the following 3 fingers on the 1st string... this achieves the same notes but is more comfortable for me. I think it’s how the ‘camo shirt’ guy does it in his cover.. shout out to the camo shirt guy. Great tutorial and great song!

Hello Alex, greeting from Finland! I really enjoyed this, this is my all time favorite song actually. I'm a fledgling guitar player myself and I wonder if you could help me with something I'd really appreciate if you could figure out which tuning Sun Kil Moon uses on the song Birds of Flims. I just can't get it down but I'm sure you can 🤔 I'd really appreciate the help. It's my mom's favorite song and I'd like to play it to her on her birthday.
Hi Tuomas, thanks for your comment! So I just tried the song this morning. I figured out a tuning that kind of works? From the bottom up: D-G-C-F-#-A-B The bass notes for the first verse are like this: 4th fret 5th string, 2nd fret 4th string, 4th fret 5th string, 4th fret 4th string, 6th fret 4th string, 4th fret 5th string. You can play a chord that sounds like his if you just play the bass note and play a triplet on strings 1 and 2 (you can also add 3) just like we did with Alesund :) Hope this helps!! Happy birthday to your Mom!
Hi Simon, this is not a long-term solution to the problem but would it help you watched the video at 0.75x speed? Also, '6-5-2...' are the string numbers, yeah? Not the frets. 6 is the lowest string (by pitch), 2 is the highest. So the picking pattern is 6-5-2-1-4.
Hey man! I'm a lil confused by your wording when you say "7 7" and "12 10." like does 7 7 mean pluck the 7th fret on two strings at the same time? I'm kind of new to this and I don't get it. Could someone explain what he's saying? Thanks.
Yes and no. It's 7th fret 3rd string, and 7th fret 1st string, but you don't pick them at the same time. Then 12th fret 3rd string, 10th fret 1st string.
Hey Matthew thanks for your question. If I have understood it correctly - the triplets are played on strings 5-2-1. I tried to teach this by showing the bass progression, 6-5-4, 6-5-4, or 6-5-4, 3-6-4. So when you play the bass progression with your thumb, try picking 2-1 just after the 5, or in the second pattern just after the 6.
Hi Connor, I would recommend watching some classical guitar tutorials on tremolo. They will show you how to practice this. In the meantime, you can play it with fewer fingers and fewer strokes. Like when I learned this song, I used to just play it with my index and ring fingers.
Hey, can you be more specific about which one? The first one in the section I’ve identified as “the fun part” or the one throughout the verse? I find the verse one easier. And is it a right hand coordination issue, or a rhythm issue?
@@_chesecak_ just try picking with your thumb, index, and middle fingers, consecutively. You can use those strings, or any others. Just start slow and once you get a hang of the motion increase the speed.
Hey I've gotten a few requests for that one recently. I've just finished final exams and I'm in Belgium now without a camera setup, but I'll see if there's a way I can make it happen.
Fantastic song and a good clear explanation. If only I had sufficient talent? A couple of years ago I visited the beautiful town of Ålesund and this song came to mind and accompanied me! It’s a pity that you didn’t play the song at the end of your tutorial but well done!

What are all these numbers you keep throwing out like 777. I am new to guitar and this song is the reason I wanted to learn so I don’t get all this lingo.
Do you know how to read tablature? It's an alternative to traditional music reading. Basically, the 6th to 1st strings are depicted horizontally, and then the numbers, e.g. "7" indicate the fret position on that string. One advantage of tablature is that since we're in an alternate tuning here, it's much more intuitive to read than the same piece would be on a traditional score. Since in the latter case the musician would have to adjust their mental map of the fretboard to account for the different tuning.

Hello Alex, is this the same tunning as "The Poisoner"?
Why, yes it is!! Very perceptive!
loved this video, but can you please do the outro?
I don't even know the outro!
I honestly like how this sounds more on a steel string
Thanks, me too. I like the sustain and harmonic richness
For the triplets in the verse, are you doing 2-1-1 (in relation to the strings) or is it 3-2-1?
Awesome tutorial, thanks!
@@patienthands ahh that answers my question, thanks!
@@matthewmcquade5175 Happy to help!
Thank you very very much!
You're welcome, Anna
Thank you so much, awesome tutorial
Thank you!
PERFECT TUTORIAL! Even showed us the tuning! Thank you!
YOU'RE WELCOME!
Any tips on how to learn single-string tremolo picking? Cannot get that part.
Hi Connor, I would recommend watching some classical guitar tutorials on tremolo. They will show you how to practice this. In the meantime, you can play it with fewer fingers and fewer strokes. Like when I learned this song, I used to just play it with my index and ring fingers.
@@patienthands thanks man!
Can you teach us "Carissa"?
What guitar dude? Sounds mint

Thank you my guy. Got a new sub.
my pleasure :)
Super💫
Hey! Any advice on the triplet? That part has always been kinda hard for me.
Hey, can you be more specific about which one? The first one in the section I’ve identified as “the fun part” or the one throughout the verse? I find the verse one easier. And is it a right hand coordination issue, or a rhythm issue?
@@patienthands the part on the verse, the first and second strings
@@_chesecak_ just try picking with your thumb, index, and middle fingers, consecutively. You can use those strings, or any others. Just start slow and once you get a hang of the motion increase the speed.
@@patienthands I kinda have trouble with the timing, it doesn't sound quite okay when I do it
@@_chesecak_ Can you count the beats in your head while you play?
Lmao the Kierkegaard drop is sick
Thank you ;)
Hey it looks like the google doc is private?
I don't manage it, sorry about that...
what’s the cords for verse 1? i got lost
there's a tab in the description
estudo violão mas não tenho habilidade para desenvolver essa musica ainda. mas obrigado pelo video!
hey, could you make a Tutorial for blue orchids? Great Video btw
Hey I've gotten a few requests for that one recently. I've just finished final exams and I'm in Belgium now without a camera setup, but I'll see if there's a way I can make it happen.
When is the next video. Hear the clamour at the balcony.

At your service ;)
This song is my Everest. I want to learn it and play it live before I head up to the sky...
Hahah, that's beautiful. You can do it!
Wow!
i am so thankful for this. this is realy awesome. but can you play the full song for us? i think many people will be thankful :D
Fantastic song and a good clear explanation. If only I had sufficient talent? A couple of years ago I visited the beautiful town of Ålesund and this song came to mind and accompanied me! It’s a pity that you didn’t play the song at the end of your tutorial but well done!
Thanks for sharing! Maybe one day I will upload a proper cover ;)
All good and well, nicely done. Why you wearing a jacket tho?
Hahaha, because where I live it is freezing cold for nine months of the year.
What kind of guitare is that?

Amazing! Can begginers play? Maybe part part?
This video was aimed at beginners, so maybe just start with picking the bass part only in the verse?
@@patienthands Thank you for your answer. I'll try. Stay safe.
@@poyraz2171 Good luck!
