I don't know why, but the feeling I get hearing a song as melancholic as Medicine Bottle sung so calmy and stripped down (more than it already is at least) is so comforting. It's like hearing your father play an old song he'd sing to your mother to you..
A real Kozelek scholar you are. Thank you for sharing these amazing performances with the world. For such idiosyncratic songs, you really manage to inhabit them with a really authentic emotion. I’m so glad I discovered your channel
I am going through a hard time. Recently divorced. Living in a small studio. "Hiding in the bedroom." "Not been so alone since kicking in the womb". I'm 31. When I was in high school, Medicine Bottle was my bad-day song. Bad week. Bad year. Recently, I listened to it so many times that I found myself seeking out covers. For some variety, while still enjoying the song. Anytime I like a song, I seek out covers. Always interesting to see how artists add their own touch. This is a phenomenal cover. I don't often leave comments, but I have to in this case. This song has a heavy emotional weight, and your voice+guitar playing flawlessly carry that weight and deliver on the power of the original work. Thank you for learning, recording, and posting this. It is helping me through this hard time. God bless you.
I'm a ´´similar`` situation, except well, I'm a bit younger... Yeah... Things have been quite bad for me as well... It got to the point that I'm probably going to end up in a psych award or either in... ´´Another place``, by the end of this year. I fought against all of this all my life, but now... I just gave up, to be quite honest. This song is one of my favorites of all time, probably my favorite and most frequently listened since I've heard it the first time, and since the end of last year and start of the current one it is keeping me company on these days that have been breaking me in ways I could never imagine before... Those chords and lyrics... I was stunned when I heard it the very first time; It felt as if someone peaked into one of my personal notes about what was going on with my life and made a song about it... Jesus... Lost my promising job, got cheated on by my long term now ex-gf, fell very deep into depression since last year, my PTSD and anxiety got so bad I can't barely function as a human being, my dog that I grew up with developed 3 tumors and I can't keep a job that allows me to pay for his and my treatment, pushed everyone away and I've been doing little more than the usual chores that keep me sane and... Well, hiding in my bedroom. This song is quite heavy for me, emotionally heavy. It always makes me feel something, even when I'm nothing but a catatonic mess. Sorry for my English, btw. Not a native speaker.
This is such an outstanding cover. Thank you for this gift. I consider this song possibly the bleakest, shivering-coldest song ever written and this cover lends it a bit of much-needed warmth if that makes any sense.
wow That was an excellent cover. You know I saw these guys live one time in Ohio and mark sang grace cathedral park acapella it was very unexpected but very awesome.
Thank you! You can get many tabs here, but many of the tabs are not correct, so you still have to use your ears :) www.reddit.com/r/BlueGuitar/comments/g8ww93/blueguitar_tabs_and_lyrics_archive/
Hey, I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out all the chords by ear, Can you tell me which shapes/chords you used? I tried finding a good tab, but I haven't really had much success at that.
There are RHP tabs here, although I did not use them for this video: web.archive.org/web/20190720204645/www.blueguitar.info/Tabs/RedHousePainters/DownColorfulHill/MedicineBottleV1.txt
I downloaded this from a site some years ago - it is not exactly what I play, but not far off: Medicine Bottle (V1) By: Red House Painters Album: Down Colorful Hill Tuning: CGCFGD Note: This is kind of a challenge. Not that the song is that complicated, but it's a lot of people's favorite. It really is a classic ! It's a beautiful song indeed, very sad and quite angry too but I wouldn't say it's the RHP's best. This here is the electric guitar tab, but you can easily find the acoustic guitar part by strumming the chords. They're given above the riffs when not too obvious. I like to mix the riffs and the strummings : that way you can play the song all by yourself, if you're not the social type. I wrote down all the riffs but I didn't specify exactly when they're played in the song : listen to it to get the entire structure. I thought at first that the guitar was tuned in cause it was a lot easier to play. But in the instrumental break you can hear a low C. So I guess it's then, though it makes the fingerings much more difficult. You can also try but I think that would be wrong ! RIFF 1 :
