Hope this helps. It's 14 quick points. Sorry about the length. Lol Fair warning. 1. Fraternities (guys) and sororities (girls) are essentially giant clubs for students to join. There are some that are co-ed. They provide students with a chance to get more involved on campus and in their community and meet new people. 2. You have to be accepted and pay dues to join. Dues can be expensive but the dues cover parties, help to finance events that your greek org puts together, events with other greek orgs like mixers and intramural sports, insurance in case anyone ever gets hurt, your meal plan if your greek house has a chef, shirts for events, and some service/philanthropy events. I've seen some pay $100 per semester and I've seen some pay $2,500 a semester. All depends on what is being offered to you as a member. But if the fraternity/sorority has an official house like the one in this video you can expect the dues to be a bit more. 3. You do have to meet certain GPA requirements and generally they are moderately high to get in. You also have to maintain a certain GPA or else you can be placed on academic probation which usually involves losing your social privileges until you pull your grades up. So in most cases the kids in these orgs do care about grades. Most, not all, but I would say most care. You will have some slip through the cracks but most try to avoid that. 4. A lot of them also require that you do a certain amount of volunteer/community service hours per semester to stay active as a member. So it's not just non-stop partying. 5. Not every fraternity and sorority has a massive house like this. At my school there are strict zoning rules for all students who wish to live off campus so the fraternities and sororities usually rent out larger houses around campus and make them unofficial greek houses. And there are around 8 to 16 people living in each greek house at my school. At some schools where Greek life is a super huge part of the campus culture you may see these giant mansions built by alumni donations or apartments designed by the school specifically to house a small percentage of Greek students. Some of these mansions might have 60 people living in them. But it is possible to see a house like you do in the movies. You also aren't required to live in the houses. But you do get a discount in your dues for doing so. 6. The size of the greek org also varies by school. A chapter of Chi Omega at one school could have 60 members but a different chapter of Chi Omega at a different school could have 350 girls. 7. There are some fraternities and sororities that are made for certain minorities ( black, latino, asian, LGBT, muslim, and religious students.) These minority Greeks tend to have more of a historical aspect with them and concern themselves with topics that impact them directly. Like a Jewish fraternity/sorority celebrating Rosh Hashanah or a black fraternity/sorority doing volunteer work to help impoverished black youth and doing things on campus to help with the black students. You can still join even if you are not that specific minority. Plenty of white people join black and latino fraternities/sororities. I know a guy who was black and Christian, yet joined a historically Jewish fraternity. 8. There have been problems in the past with traditionally white greek orgs not accepting minorities but within the past 20 years many have become very diverse. There are still small issues but it is better overall. 9. Some greek orgs are designed to focus on community service or are designed to help students of a specific college major and these place less emphasis on partying and more on networking, your grades, improving interview techniques, having you meet service organizations and potential employers, and helping to boost your resume and land jobs. There are even some service fraternities designed for kids who are music majors or are musically inclined as a whole. 10. This specific sorority in the video would be classified as a "social greek organization" meaning that they do party and have social mixers with other fraternities and sororities in addition to doing community service work. 11. As a Sister (Iota Gamma Alumni) I really loved seeing a bit of what it could have been! Being from Louisiana, we actually weren't allowed to live in the house. As much as I loved my sisterhood experience, having the opportunity to live together would have been a dream. A lovely house, totally classy.
"The other two girls live on the porch" ... I don't know what that exactly means but to me, a porch is OUTSIDE and i wouldn't want to sleep outside 24/7 😂
There aren’t many times I regret joining the navy but this makes me wish I was a 22 year old girl going to U of O and not breaking my back doing drug busts at sea.
Regina Bando V. It’s basically a bunch of girls apply to live and represent their sorority and sadly the girls who live there judge and pick from the group. I say sadly because most of the times they discriminate at least in my college that was happening.
imagine a club, but bigger i guess? u could really just go anywhere, be like "hi im in this sorority!" and then that's immediate common ground u can have with other people. u would go through recruitment where a bunch of girls sign up to attend events to learn about each different sorority and then by the end of it, you can receive a bid if they liked u and u liked them. there are a few types of sororities, the more mainstream ones are the ones u see here. i think the bigger greek life is at the school, the more strict/discriminatory they may be. they have other sororities that aren't as well known, but usually have a focus on something like volunteering, religion, ethnic groups, or lgbtqia+.
I was in a sorority when I was university. It was a blast. It was not like the stereotypical sorority you see in movies. Yes, we would go to parties and stuff. But, we also had the highest group GPA. We did a lot of volunteering. Almost all of us worked as well. I'm very introverted, but, it was a great way to make friends with a group of girls with similar ideals. Living is a sorority house was actually cheaper than living in the dorms. I don't know if every school is like that. I went to a smaller university.
I live in Australia and this is such a forgein concept for me haha in saying that I didn't go to uni here either but this is so interesting. The idea of so many people in one house is crazy but also heartwarming aswel. Great insight!
chloe You’re correct, I’m a straight girl and I have no problem sleeping with another girl like that. It’s really not a big deal, even if they weren’t straight, it doesn’t really matter either. Girls aren’t so worried about that
I lived in that house from 1986 to 1989. I loved every minute of it. At the time everything was pink with teal accents and the woodwork was painted white. The dining room had purple-flowered wallpaper. The other girls in the house were achievement minded so it really helped me keep my grades up and do well in college. I wasn't cute or popular in high school so I enjoyed being part of a group with such great women.
That looks so cute and so much fun to live with everyone, but how does a sorority house work? Do you have a cook/cleaner (the dining room looks set up like a hotel or something) or do you have to do everything yourself?
At my school the sorority houses have people who cook their meals during the week days but not really on the weekends. No sure about the cleaning but wouldn’t be surprised if people came into help
At my sorority we have a cook and a handyman/cleaner. It is expected that girls keep their rooms tidy and vacuum them themselves. The room I lived in had its own bathroom, but we had to clean it ourselves. Other sororities on my campus had someone who came into clean, but didn't have a cook. The ones without a cook did catering instead.
That sounds amazing oh my god! In Ireland we don't have anything like a sorority and our college flats/houses are usually pretty horrible and overpriced, American colleges dorms always look so clean and nice hahah
Jessica Drew lol I live in the oldest dorm building at my college and it definitely ain’t super nice!! It’s old (but I do prefer the quality and storage over new ones) but I’d say it is really overpriced too!! My dorm and mandatory food account is more expensive than my actual tuition.
The way you showed all the girls rooms and described them was so cool and all the rooms are so adorable and you girls are so sweet! I love you Kiara... ❤️🤗
All rooms were absolutely adorable!!! ❤️It would be interesting that you made a video explain how can you enter in a sorority, how does the room selection works.... love u Kiara and also Katie ❤️
Hey! Thanks for this! I'm from Eugene and love historic architecture. Also, I was a security guard for Chi Omega a couple years ago. I used to check your doors three times a night to make sure you were safe. On occasion, some young lady would hear me and pop her head out the door and we would both have a good startle and a laugh! I think it would be wonderful if the various houses would give tours in the summer, or something, you know, for all us old house lovers.
I study in Germany and have my own apartment together with my boyfriend, but now i honestly wanna have one of those 12 squaremeter rooms and live in a sorority because this is the coolest thing ever, what the heck
Never been too big on the sorority thing, but this makes it seem pretty cool. Also, the fact it's a historical house and there is a picture of the original building makes it really special! Honestly, I thought the history part was one of the coolest things
If u haven’t watched house of anubis u definitely should cause u look soooooooo much like the main character an also you’re living in this very old house... u should really see it
Watching this because I miss being in my sorority house during the pandemic!! The house is BEAUTIFUL and all of the rooms are so aesthetically pleasing!!!
This is super cute! My mom is a Chi Omega from FSU circa 1979-1981 I think lol. Her house was pretty big but nothing like this! That house is incredible!
It's kinda complicated and different between every single house across America ...but basically you get points from your GPA, attending events, involvement in the house, and community service hours and then every girl gets ranked based on the number of points they have and that determines who chooses their rooms first! Hope that makes a bit more sense :)
@@KiaraMadisen That sounds so weird... Ranking people from best to last, is there a lot of competition between the girls then? And also, when you're in a house with like 50 people, do you get to know everyone or do you kind of stick to one smaller group of friends and only see the other ones at events and meetings?
Kiara Madisen can you make a more in depth video explaining these questions?!!! Pretty please even if you include other girls too answering the questions!!!
@@medyamnv2236 Sorry this is a late reply, but no it's not weird and not very competitive. If anything, the competition fuels involvement and good grades which are very positive things. To answer your other questions, we all hang out together and in my house I genuinely am friends with everyone. We naturally have smaller friend groups, but we do have a bond between everyone and hang out all the time :)
This is so interesting! I didn't really know the culture behind sorority in American universities and how they work but after looking at several videos and this one included, I think I understand it more a little bit better of how they work and represent. We don't really have sororities in my country but we have student associations and communities that works like sorority; doing fundraisings, charities, community services, etc. Having community/student housing for specific association is very rare but I see the appeal of having your own house and living together. We just have separate male and female dorms in universities but the majority of the students chooses to live outside campus anyways and live with close friends instead.
Wait sorry if this sounds so dumb but did you say some girls lived on the porch? When you were talking about the 4 person room? I could have misheard hahaha
Caroline Downing lol that’s what we call the sleeping porch which is a room with a bunch of beds but it’s 24/7 dark and quiet so I can’t film in there :)
You don’t live in the porch, it’s just where your bed is! It is dependent on how many girls live in the house. My sorority, sigma sigma sigma, has two porches. We have a 16 bed porch and a 26 person porch. We all have a room we share with 1-4 other people that’s where we keep all of our things, but we sleep in the porch!
Student here at UO. Never seen the inside of a frat or sorority house except in movies and tv shows. Nice video! It was very informative and I do love how reasonably intact the house is still in compared to when it was first built. I hope at some point during my time here I get to see the inside of one of the many we have with UO. I’m genuinely more interested in the history and architecture of the older homes. Good luck during your final couple of weeks!
Thanks so much for your genuine comment! It is truly so well built and amazing how much work goes into the upkeep of the house which is so appreciated by all the girls who call this place home.
Kiara Madisen I was serving, about a week ago, a group of ladies from one of the sororities (can’t place which one it was) who were having a chapter meeting and they talked a lot about their house too and how much they love living there. One take away some of the other people in this comment section don’t seem to understand that I find very beneficial about sororities and frats is the comradry. They can call it “buying friends” but do you know how difficult it can be to make friends at a new school with nearly 8,000+ students lol? How intimidating it can be. That’s what’s so great about these houses, making those connections and friendships right out the gate. It makes your overall academic experience more worthwhile and engaging. So again kudos to you joining and giving others an inside look 👍🏻. I can’t recall in the video but did you mention what year you are this year? What’s your major or what majors are you leaning towards if you’re still undecided?
Kiara Madisen I know! I’m doing an exchange year in America next year at college! Excited to see what it’s all about:) annoying that I can’t be a part of it though! :( x
@@Emilyc13 If I get into my firm choice I will have a study abroad year. LOL i was in a sorority at a city school in Washington D.C. and we didn't even have houses like this! we didn't have the space or the number of people to fill it up. i don't wish we had a proper house since i never lived in our townhouse anyway, but it still looks cool.

I respect how much effort you put into them and please keep making more videos! Also I am so looking forward to scream when I run into you at school😫😫
I’m genuinely astonished that they share rooms. It’s literally just not allowed in university accommodation in England it would never happen. I would also kick off soooo much if I had to share a room tf that’s the only space that you can escape from everyone when it gets too much and then there’s other people in there??!
Josie Jones Yeah, that makes sense. People fight due to diff personalities, jealousy, stealing, bullying, etc. Can’t imagine having to deal with that while trying to live a peaceful and studious college life.
it's really not that bad...everyone has such busy schedules it's not like your roommate is always there, plus there are so many places in the house to find quite space where you can chill too :)
Kiara Madisen If you’re lucky to have decent people around. My mom’s friend’s daughter said her roommate bothered her studies when she brought guys to fuck in their room and kept locking her out their room and kept music loud. When she confronted her roommate, the more the girl did it (idk why). She endured it until she could leave and enlisted in the navy.
Ugh love. It’s like MTV Cribs Sorority addition. I really like seeing the less “extravagant” houses like many schools in the south have. It’s a cool contrast to have a bit smaller and more historic house that has that really homey feeling like this. :)
@@KatRettino Haha i know this house is totally beautiful! Look like an Alabama sorority house tour though and you'll see what I mean. They just have like 50 bedrooms and pools and crazy things at some schools.
I dont know if you'll see this, but you got a new subscriber :) I like how you're all about your college life first and youtube is secondary, unlike SO MANY youtubers! I want to see a slice of someone's real life and not just them being a celebrity. Stay real, Kiara! Much love xxx
This was so cute! I’m not sure about anyone else but here in the uk we spend our first year in dorms and then we get flats with friends to live in for the rest of school.
I’ve never been a fan of Sorority girls because they do often have a reputation for not being the nicest group of girls. However....you girls are really adorable, your house and rooms are adorable, and you make me miss being in my early twenties and wished I had experienced that. Cest la vie. Thanks for the tour, you girls are presh. 💗
I always wondered what it would be like to live in a large sorority house! I lived in the smallest Chi Omega house! We only had 4 people who lived there!
yo i was literally in a sorority and these videos are so weird to me LOL. because i went to a city school literally right by the White House in the middle of D.C. and we only had room for townhouses, not actual houses. these mansions are nuts!
@@db1365 yeah. there's literally no room lol, especially not at GW. Georgetown Greek life is basically nonexistent, i heard way more about AU Greek life

I go to school at UIC in Chicago and we aren’t allowed to have sorority houses. It’s considered a brothel in the city of Chicago to have numerous girls living under one roof.
Idk _ it honestly depends on the school. i go to the university of Michigan, and I was assigned one of the more expensive dorms my freshman year. i will be living in the AOII sorority house next year, and it is slightly cheaper.
K T that’s a really negative way of thinking about it. yes, there are chapter dues you have to pay, but you get so many things in return! there are tons of events throughout the school year such as bid day, sisterhood events, philanthropy events, date parties. i love my sorority, and it is a lot more to it than just “pay for me friends”.

this confused me so much please explain @kiaramadisen

Kiara Madisen what is a sleeping porch?
it's kinda like a bunk room that is 24/7 dark and chilled so you can have optimum sleep :)
Kiara Madisen thank you!! That clears that up a lot haha
so sororities kinda stuff actually exists outside movies. usa keeps amazing me

How does the whole sorority thing works? We don´t have that kind of thing in my country
We dont have that in Venezuela either... we only have movies just to imagine how it would be...
Where is your bedroom
I was in a sorority when I was university. It was a blast. It was not like the stereotypical sorority you see in movies. Yes, we would go to parties and stuff. But, we also had the highest group GPA. We did a lot of volunteering. Almost all of us worked as well. I'm very introverted, but, it was a great way to make friends with a group of girls with similar ideals. Living is a sorority house was actually cheaper than living in the dorms.
I don't know if every school is like that. I went to a smaller university.
Imagine playing hide n seek wowza
wait that's such a good idea 👌🏼
I live in Australia and this is such a forgein concept for me haha in saying that I didn't go to uni here either but this is so interesting. The idea of so many people in one house is crazy but also heartwarming aswel. Great insight!
i need all of your sorority sisters’ pinterest boards
“these are our sorority gorls” (camera pans to a picture of human bodies with Gru heads). I’m screaming what. Why is this so funny 😭
Living in a sorority house would have added on so much more stress to my life. I'm glad I lived in a conventional residence hall.
girl: “DONT open my closet”
other girl: *opens and shows it anyways*
sooo rude
Your sorority house is so cute and all the girls room are adorable!!😍😍 this was such a cool vid too, I’ve always been curious haha
Aww thanks so much for watching & for your sweet comment Sarah!
Is no one gonna talk about the “mega bed”?
straight girls bruh...
And how it used to be in the closet lol
chloe You’re correct, I’m a straight girl and I have no problem sleeping with another girl like that. It’s really not a big deal, even if they weren’t straight, it doesn’t really matter either. Girls aren’t so worried about that
If people think this is crazy you should see sorority houses in the south - they're on another level

Studying in Germany is boring. There is not enough fun and too much work.

The sorority gorls had me dead!! That’s amazing
Never been too big on the sorority thing, but this makes it seem pretty cool. Also, the fact it's a historical house and there is a picture of the original building makes it really special! Honestly, I thought the history part was one of the coolest things

This is super cute! My mom is a Chi Omega from FSU circa 1979-1981 I think lol. Her house was pretty big but nothing like this! That house is incredible!
i’m at the zeta beta chapter of chi omega at the university of arizona!!! hi sister!
Ashtyn Gee wait what
Can you talk about how the point system works and how you get your rooms
It's kinda complicated and different between every single house across America ...but basically you get points from your GPA, attending events, involvement in the house, and community service hours and then every girl gets ranked based on the number of points they have and that determines who chooses their rooms first! Hope that makes a bit more sense :)
@@KiaraMadisen so the people with the lowest points live on the porch? you said 2 girls live on the porch at 4:32
@@KiaraMadisen That sounds so weird...
I refuse to believe that people actually live like this
well we do, and we have a lot of fun so believe it :)
Lol they decorated all the rooms the same way.....
We just have separate male and female dorms in universities but the majority of the students chooses to live outside campus anyways and live with close friends instead.
all the rooms are so aesthetically pleasing 😍
Wished we did this in Britain it looks so good like being with different people and connecting to each in different ways seems really fun 😭❤️❤️
same, im british and this makes me so jelly omg
Wait sorry if this sounds so dumb but did you say some girls lived on the porch? When you were talking about the 4 person room? I could have misheard hahaha
Caroline Downing lol that’s what we call the sleeping porch which is a room with a bunch of beds but it’s 24/7 dark and quiet so I can’t film in there :)
Same
@@KiaraMadisen How many girls live on the porch? DId they decide to live there? I am so curious about this!
@@briandsky2 This doesn't sound very convenient. Have you ever lived in a room arrangment like that?

there’s more than just this, google the coin flip between pettygrove and lovejoy.
I’ve been watching so many sorority house tours and none of them made me want to join one until this video - the vibes are emasculate!!!
when Katie said megabed...i felt that. haha but in my sorority house we also push our beds together and call it megabed :)

I was a Chi Omega at a small school in Kansas! It was so cool to see all the similarities between our two chapters!
Cute! But idk why the brick room is most popular. It was the darkest and smallest to me lol.
I’m genuinely astonished that they share rooms. It’s literally just not allowed in university accommodation in England it would never happen. I would also kick off soooo much if I had to share a room tf that’s the only space that you can escape from everyone when it gets too much and then there’s other people in there??!
Josie Jones Really? In England, do you get individual rooms? I live in the US and I hate the thought of sharing dorms or rooms.
Vane V yeah, you can get shared apartments in second/ third year but it’s not advised at all
Josie Jones Yeah, that makes sense.

Is living in a sorority house cheaper than a dorm?
Idk _ for some school yes
You have to pay for friends also so not really
Idk _ it honestly depends on the school. i go to the university of Michigan, and I was assigned one of the more expensive dorms my freshman year. i will be living in the AOII sorority house next year, and it is slightly cheaper.
K T that’s a really negative way of thinking about it. yes, there are chapter dues you have to pay, but you get so many things in return! there are tons of events throughout the school year such as bid day, sisterhood events, philanthropy events, date parties. i love my sorority, and it is a lot more to it than just “pay for me friends”.
Yes, at my school it is :)
