IIRC this is the airport that Soviet pilot Victor Belenko defected to in his MIg 25 Foxbat. He was headed for a military airport, but was low on fuel, so he landed here. The Mig 25 interceptor is huge for a fighter jet (737 sized) and over ran the runway. See Wikipedia for more info.

John I'm glad whoever is at the controls is flying the plane. today's passenger jets the time that the crew is hands on flying these jets is 10 minutes the 5 minutes to take off and the 5 minutes to land the rest of the flight be it a short hop flight from Boston to NYC or 11 hours from San Francisco to Tokyo computers take over and fly the plane. technology is quite amazing!

Hokkaido has about a dozen airport, Sapporo’s NEW CHITOSE the only real international one. Hakodate is about as big as Asahikawa I think. I flew out of Kushiro last time, maybe just slightly smaller then here. The most popular portal is New Chitose not here. Cost: if you book more than 45 days in advance, it’s about ¥9000 to ¥11000 depending on location. Before 28 days, a little more. With less than a month, it’s more expensive and within a week, HIGH.
