Use any phone number you like, it doesn’t really matter. You confirm whatever you entered and that’s it. Put in all 9s if you like. Will they contact international numbers? Probably not, who knows. You’re probably gone from Japan by then if you don’t have a Japan no. That’s why they recommend tourists get the Welcome SUICA card. Don’t lose it 😅
I was in Japan August 4-11. The only IC card available was the Welcome Suica card. I got mine and loaded it with 10,000 Yen. When I left, after all the subway rides, bus rides, and various store purchases, I returned to California and only left a balance of 330 Yen. The card is expired now, but it did well for me.
Didn't seem to be a problem in July (2024), when I was there. If you go in and ask at the JR rail office, they will often just make one for you on the spot.

It is nice to see the Suica Card is back. I am using the app which is also OK. Easy to charge, but it asked me too often to enter my password. One time I enteref a wrong password and the Suica App was locked for almost 2 days and I couldn't use it. Very annoying. I understand it is because of safety, but... it is very anoying to always confirm the suica with my password. So the Suica card is much more convinient than the App.

Regular. You have to provide a deposit but you can also charge it and add more. I’m not certain if you can with the WELCOME tourist one. If you’re here for 2 months, gets a normal IC card but it doesn’t have to be SUICA. If Kansai, get ICOCA. I think it’s cooler 😂 I’m using TOICA now, from Nagoya but in the end, you get what you can get ^_^
I'm quite surprised that they are not doing any collaborations with these cards. You can get credit cards with a lot of anime-based designs, and videogame character designs, but these Suica, ICOCA, Pasmo, etc cards are the same all the time. I wonder if the chip shortage has anything to do with this or if this is somewhat expected.
I think in a few years the IC card will be gone. It’ll just be credit cards or smart phones. I think that may be why, they see the end and already working on the escape plan.

Types? Those are IC Crass but they’re not “Suica” - SUICA is for JR EAST. I think it’s trademarked. Monorail is neither metro or JR so they want to hold some of that IC reserve money too. So we get more regional and intercity brands but it doesn’t mean much to the consumer.
Is it possible to get the green Suica card at Narita airport? Last time I got the Welcome Suica there but I would like to get the normal one so that I don’t have to get a new one every time I come to Japan
It's possible but usually you have to go to the service counter, not the machines, to buy ones. As a result, it might be easier to wait until you get into a major JR station in the city so you're not waiting in a long queue.

John, is your birth month August? The instructions on the SUICA card dispensing machine weren't very clear about YEAR MONTH DAY or YEAR DAY MONTH. The example they gave of February 2 was quite ambiguous. (If so, we share a birthday and first name)
My family got Suica cards from the nice people at the Tokyo Station customer service office (just left of the view of your camera as you were approaching the ticket machine) in early June. However, they only had the suica cards, not the welcome cards or child suica cards. Usually not a big deal, but one of our family members is only 11 years old, so we had to pay adult fares for her, not cool! Wife and I just used our Iphones.
Soon! I read they’re working on it for the ticket machines. I’ve no idea on getting money back. You can at the ticket windows with staff I believe. The money stays there for 10 years after last use but if the e chip breaks or is damaged, you may lose it. I believe they have the total in computers and can give a new card with left money at the windows.

Avoid the Welcome Suica card! The funds expire after about 3 weeks or so. It happened to me in the middle of a trip. My Suica just stopped working and I was told that my remaining balance is now property of Suica.
28 days. Yeah - not a pleasant “welcome” it’s intended for people visiting less than 4 weeks and you can get the money back before that time. Not sure if they can legally “KEEP” it though but it does expire AFTER FIRST USE.
In my opinion, the Suica card was never really unavailable. In May, we had to put ourselves out a little bit to get one of the cards, but it was available in Ueno.
Try it, no one checks - you can put ANY number you want. You only confirm it. I think you should ask if you put in a US number, can they call you if found? I don’t know … maybe. You add in the number you have and maybe don’t lose it 😂 there’s no guaranty it’ll be returned.

Supposedly Suica cards have a 10 year expiration date, but I just keep using the same one I got back in 2011 during my first trip to Japan.😅
They expire if they are inactive for 10 years, so as long as you reuse them in that time period they’ll never expire

Credit cards are not fast enough for JR ticket gates. IC cards let people walk through up to 5x as fast.

For a Children's Suica, you need to go to their office located in the basement of the North Tower.

I do think ¥25,000 would be more useful. ¥30,000 maybe. ¥50,000 is a lot - I’d never do it. I don’t want the company to have that kind of surplus.

Try it, no one checks - you can put ANY number you want. You only confirm it. I think you should ask if you put in a US number, can they call you if found? I don’t know … maybe. You add in the number you have and maybe don’t lose it 😂 there’s no guaranty it’ll be returned.

I landed in Haneda last week and got a Pasmo no problem. Didn't register a phone number - not that I would have a Japanese phone card to register. Joke's on me, now I'm in Kanazawa and they have their own ICa and don't take other cards on the busses 😂😂😂 it's fine tho I low-key collect IC cards anyways, I have like, 5 from different prefectures
