    Use any phone number you like, it doesn’t really matter. You confirm whatever you entered and that’s it. Put in all 9s if you like. Will they contact international numbers? Probably not, who knows. You’re probably gone from
    Japan by then if you don’t have a Japan no. That’s why they recommend tourists get the Welcome SUICA card. Don’t lose it 😅

    I was in Japan August 4-11. The only IC card available was the Welcome Suica card. I got mine and loaded it with 10,000 Yen. When I left, after all the subway rides, bus rides, and various store purchases, I returned to California and only left a balance of 330 Yen. The card is expired now, but it did well for me.

      Didn't seem to be a problem in July (2024), when I was there. If you go in and ask at the JR rail office, they will often just make one for you on the spot.

    It is nice to see the Suica Card is back. I am using the app which is also OK. Easy to charge, but it asked me too often to enter my password. One time I enteref a wrong password and the Suica App was locked for almost 2 days and I couldn't use it. Very annoying. I understand it is because of safety, but... it is very anoying to always confirm the suica with my password.
    So the Suica card is much more convinient than the App.

    • @onlyinjapanGO
      @onlyinjapanGO  3 місяці тому +1

      Regular. You have to provide a deposit but you can also charge it and add more. I’m not certain if you can with the WELCOME tourist one. If you’re here for 2 months, gets a normal IC card but it doesn’t have to be SUICA. If Kansai, get ICOCA. I think it’s cooler 😂 I’m using TOICA now, from Nagoya but in the end, you get what you can get ^_^

  • @petersziraki7672
    @petersziraki7672 3 місяці тому +1

    I'm quite surprised that they are not doing any collaborations with these cards. You can get credit cards with a lot of anime-based designs, and videogame character designs, but these Suica, ICOCA, Pasmo, etc cards are the same all the time. I wonder if the chip shortage has anything to do with this or if this is somewhat expected.

    • @onlyinjapanGO
      @onlyinjapanGO  3 місяці тому +1

      I think in a few years the IC card will be gone. It’ll just be credit cards or smart phones. I think that may be why, they see the end and already working on the escape plan.

    Their are two other Suica types
    the monorail one from Haneda airport
    that has a tunnel on it. While the other from the Rinkai Line has a dolphin.

    • @onlyinjapanGO
      @onlyinjapanGO  3 місяці тому

      Types? Those are IC Crass but they’re not “Suica” - SUICA is for JR EAST. I think it’s trademarked. Monorail is neither metro or JR so they want to hold some of that IC reserve money too. So we get more regional and intercity brands but it doesn’t mean much to the consumer.

    • @kevlarcardhouse252
      @kevlarcardhouse252 2 місяці тому

      It's possible but usually you have to go to the service counter, not the machines, to buy ones. As a result, it might be easier to wait until you get into a major JR station in the city so you're not waiting in a long queue.

  • @Traveljet14

    Thanks John. Very helpful.
    Questions:
    Do tourists have to use a Japanese phone number and not an international number?
    1) What happens if you lost it and can’t find it the card? There’s no way of proving you lost if someone doesn’t pick it up and report it. Do we make an official report at the police station first?
    2) Technically it’s not transferable but who is going to check? If someone dishonest picks it up, they can use it especially if there’s a big balance inside.

    Avoid the Welcome Suica card! The funds expire after about 3 weeks or so. It happened to me in the middle of a trip. My Suica just stopped working and I was told that my remaining balance is now property of Suica.

      28 days. Yeah - not a pleasant “welcome” it’s intended for people visiting less than 4 weeks and you can get the money back before that time. Not sure if they can legally “KEEP” it though but it does expire AFTER FIRST USE.
