    • @mariotolentino557

Those horse driven “caretela” drivers lie and will say something lower price when they’re “selling” their ride but then they will show you the price on their card which is way too high than what their “come on” sell was. I am a Fil-American visitor being taken around by a local host and the same scam happened and we almost got into a fight but they were so many of these “drivers” that we were afraid of our lives.
To tourists: don’t get sold with this horse-drawn carts. They are scammers!

My first time to the Philippines was in April 1986. My friend and I were walking along Roxas Blvd (exactly where you were) and we were told by the driver of the horse and buggy that the next block was very dangerous and he would give us a free ride to the “safe” zone (one block).
After we got in, the driver kept going and was speeding up when we asked him to stop.
It was only when we stood up to jump off that he finally stopped and demanded money.
    Some things never change…

the most densely populated thing only applies to Manila city, which is just a tiny part of Metro Manila. It's almost like the old forgotten part (destroyed during WW2). Most of the commerce and business have moved further inland like Makati, Ortigas, and BGC. Those are the new "downtowns"

The actual price of the ride is 1,500, however he told you its 50 pesos to convince you to make a ride. Next time be familiar with different kinds and cost of transportation so you will not be scammed. Like the horse ride is not for transport to bring you to the hotel rather its for someone who would want to experience the kalesa ride and to see attractions around

Hi Gabi, I've watched your vlogs before. If you still plan to ride around Philippines, I would suggest roaming the island of Luzon first since some of the most scenic roads and landscapes are here. Mindanao is an underrated island with lots of hidden gems and indigenous culture. You might hear a lot of bad stuff about Mindanao but its generally safe. Visayas region is beautiful too with tons of surprises on different islands but you need to prepare mentally and physically for the long RoRo boat rides. Regarding food, Filipinos prefer more of home-cooking than streetfood. You're lucky if a Filipino family invites you to dine with them. Best of luck!

Hello Gab, good to see you exploring our country. I'm a Filipino from Davao City but im currently residing in Macau for more than 5 yrs and been travelling to different countries particularly Asia, my last travel just recently last Feb in Phuket and Bangkok I am happy that i found your vlog and really learned many things. Now seeing you exploring our country makes me more happy that you will experience and learnfrom our culture. But its a sad thing to know that you got scammed, well actually this is not new to us even us local people still a target for this shameful things thats one of the reason that me myself never explored Manila but by watching this video makes me want to. Manila is just our gateway going up north or flying abroad. Regarding about your plan buy a motorcycle is not the best thing to do coz yeah theres a lot of paperwork it will not took you just a week but more than a month luckily you didnt pursue.Just renting is the best way. Anyway try to visit CEBU is theres a lot of activities there i know you will enjoy. Also consider Mindanao specially Siargao its a backpackers haven for young people. Try also consider Baguio, Benguet & Sagada if you want high mountains, if you want beach mindanao has a lot to offer from mountain ranges to sea. Samal Island is one of few.. I am happy to tour you but unfortunately im not in philippines currently. Hope you enjoy your visit there..reagards to you and ploy! DAGHANG SALAMAT

Why would a horse carriage only cost 50 pesos??????? My gosh! If you live in the Philippines for at least 14 days, you would know that something like a horse drawn carriage, which is only for tourism should cost a minimum of 500 pesoses. He probably thought he was experiencing something cultural, ha ha ha ha. He was expecting something cultural from the streets of Manila and it cost a dollar,

The swing from high class to low class, clean to filthy, ultra-developed to slums are evident once you tour around the metro. It even goes down to differences with the residents of each city. Few travel bloggers can fathom the diversity that you see & experience in Metro Manila. It's just mind-blowing and overwhelming, both in positive and negative ways

Mabuhay Gabi! Definitely recommend staying and hanging more around BGC in your next time in Metro Manila - which for anyone who hasn't been here is the new downtown area for Metro Manila. It comes alive from 5pm, but during the day its quiet and chilled. The area is fully developed and has places like the Mind Museum, American Cemetary, Venice Grand Central Mall, Bonifacio High Street (the main uptown lifestyle center for the entire metro), and Forbes Town (for chilled restaurants and evening hanging out). Another place you could see next time is the SM Mall Of Asia (MOA) complex called Bay City which a large new area in Manila Bay. That's where you'll see all us ordinary middle class Filipinos and other tourists if going by the Bay area. That part of the bay you went to is a bit sketchy to be honest, so I'm not surprised you were scammed by that calesa driver (we avoid taking calesas). At Bay City you can ride on the Manila Eye ferris wheel with lovely views of the entire metro, see the world's largest Ikea store, and the world's second largest dancing fountain at Okada. They do free shows between 6-10pm every day. The thing with Metro Manila is that there's a big divide - most tourists and expats hang out in the better areas of the metro like BGC and Bay City. Binondo is culturally rich, but its in the sketchy part of the city. Makati too is getting a bit dated now, since the center has shifted to BGC, and it shows in the dilapidated quality of the Makati sidewalks and sometimes sketchy characters who are there.
If you're able to go to Baguio and the Cordillera highlands and see the 2,500 year old rice terraces on the UNESCO world heritage list (its 3-4 hour trip via bus on the expressway to Baguio, but a longer trip to see the rice terraces once you're in the pine-filled highlands) - or Batanes (the NZ of Southeast Asia), its highly highly recommended - its unique to this country :) Subbed!

Of course I did Intramuros and the beachfront but when I tried to go to Makato and BGC I was stuck in traffic. Enjoy your time in the Philippines. I would seriously recommend, if you go to Palawan, El Nido, book a trip with Tao Expedition!!! At least 5 days trip on a boat to some small Islands between El Nido and Coron. Don't miss that experience! For me it was the best in Philippines and I am still there in my thoughts. Have a save trip and enjoy!

This drivers sometimes take advantage but the Grab, buses and jeepneys are more reliable. Yes, Manila is so diversified even us locals come in different shapes, sizes and colors but we are friendly and loving people. There are also many Filipinos in Italy. I'm a Filipino from the city of Cebu and have been to over 20 countries, but I'm ashamed to admit that I've never explored much of Manila. I just don't like the vibe there, but I'm amazed at the knowledge of the trike driver who toured you around Intramuros. In fact, I have learned a lot of new things about the history of my own country from him. haha ! This video kinda change my impression of Manila and might take the time to explore it soon when I'm back. Right now, I'm on my way to Nepal :) Enjoy Philippines, Gabi!

Manila is very promising as many teens nowadays are getting better education and have access to to higher education like entering to college. Many graduates are now getting a job which afford basic commodities in average living. Contrary to many Manila has started to its drastic changes and started eliminating informal settlers enjoying government's housing projects. Hopefully, Filipinos in general shall maintain tactful way of living like being clean to its environment and respect to nature itself as it is one major catalyst to poverty if you let it ignore.
