- Easy way to remove tarnish and brighten up a silver instrument. Here is a demonstration of cleaning up a heavily tarnished, almost black, silver plated horn. Simple process using baking soda, salt, aluminium foil, and hot water.
I followed your instructions and soaked a gold plated Bach bugle that was made for the US Army, and within 30 minutes the dark tarnished spots were gone! Thank you
I'm going to use this on my horn. Haven't played consistently for a few years and am now ready to get back to work.

This is outrageous. So many folks who only understand music trying to handle a chemical reaction issue. Low and behold, a basic understanding of chemistry accomplishes so much more impressive.

Actual gold? Not that I know of. If you mean brass (gold color) then brass polish will do the trick.
How long is a little while?
Do you have any idea what the ratios would be for a trombone in a bathtub? I own an antique silver Conn valve bone.

Well, yes I do have a PhD, but I'm not a chemist. (Although I did study enough chemistry to comprehend ion exchange at a basic level).
It would have been better and faster if you had used boiling water a 1/2cup or 1 cup of baking soda , and salt.
