Couesnon Clairon Bb
This is a French Clairon made by Couesnon in 1941. This is the style bugle commonly used in the American Civil War. This is also the type of bugle the Gen Pershing purchased for his Army in Europe at the end of WWI.

Powerful Men
Переглядів 2834 роки тому
This is a bugle march titled "Powerful Men". I first learned this piece when I was a cadet at West Point in the Cadet Field Music Group. I believe this was written by Jack Pratt when he was the arranger for the Hellcats (The bugle parts are unmarked, but the drum part does show him as the composer). The first few bars are the same as "Monty" from Price's 12 Modern Marches but then it differs. I...

    Hi Buddy, this video is a little more than 6 years old now, and in it, you said you wouldn't pay $300 for one of these. I played one in 87-88, and it would be fun to have one again, but the only ones I see are listed at almost $500 (or are in really bad shape). Post-pandemic inflation, what do you consider a fair price for one of these today?

    me being a very young person and not able to find much information is this by chance the type of horn that the blue devils used in 1989?

    • @ericroethe6944
      @ericroethe6944 12 днів тому

      Yep. And I'm still pissed that DCI let the 89 Devils put their semi-finals show on the recordings. Sure would have loved it if other corps had been allowed that privilege, I know there's several fracks I wish I still didn't have to listen to. But when you're the Blue Devils, apparently you get to literally name your own tune.

    It is not called a bugle due to the key it is in. It is a bugle because it does not have the fully chromatic scale of a normal, three-valved brass instrument that is used in bands or orchestras. That was why there was such a huge stink when the DCI Rules Congress voted to legalize fully chromatic instruments (still in G) and then trying to do Damage Control with the fan base, because essentially DCI became G-pitched, brass marching bands at that time - drum and bugle corps ceased to exist at that point. Nice, old soprano, there, sir… and you sound great on it. Keep posting!

    Freelancers Alumni has some Dynasty 3 valves and they play horrible. When you try to hit a high A, good luck on what pitch actually is achieved. I got a Kanstul direct from them a few years before they went out of business. Plays much, much better.

    I have that Getzen, and an Olds of the same vintage. I think the Olds sounds better, but the Getzen rotor assembly is way better engineered then the Olds' patented "self-loosening pivot screw".

    Ralph Vaughan Williams called for one of these in his Pastoral Symphony, it’s a piece based on World War 1. The cavalry trumpet excerpt is based on a bugler’s warmup routine he heard as a field medic. He uses the flat 7th partial a lot.

    I played this bugle in my drum & bugle corp and and have thought about it for 30 years but could never find one. I thought I remembered it wrong, only to find out that they stopped using them. Where are they all now? I got a trumpet, but it's not the same. Just today, I found one available and my husband bought it for me. I am hoping to recreate the magic that I had back then, it brought me so much happiness!

    I have an unidentified G-D tenor-baritone that is actually the same pitch as a bass-baritone, but more narrow bore. I bought it at a flea market many years ago for $18. Since it has no manufacturer branding on it, I assume it was made for military use. Looking at pictures of different tenor-baritones I have concluded that it is probably a Gretsch. It is very rough but does play. Takes a lot of wind to play it, much more than either of my trombones.

    I marched with The Cavaliers in the two-valve bugle days and we switched from Olds to Dynasty; I far preferred the Olds Ultratone II. The high register was ridiculously easy and I thought the tone was more consistent in every register.

  • @raymondfallon7429
    @raymondfallon7429 Рік тому

    Earliest date for this horn is 1967, when the key of G-F was okayed to replace G-D. The rotary valve replaced the earlier (half-step) slip slide. Nice horn - that bad boy will play forever, and sound good. The Olds was one of the few mellophone horns that could be played in (relative) tune. Your fine collection on the wall indicates that you probably know all that. Did you march?

    Something I did on a silver plate cornet that I'm happy with is use a car polish that has carnauba wax in it, on just the bell up to first attachment, and the mouthpiece. DPO Dreaded Previous Owner AKA eBay seller had polished a part of the stencil done for Chicago retailer, and tarnishing of unpolished area was uneven, ugly, weird. Only polish by hand, I think DPO Q&D handiwork may have softened the stencil marking. I'm very happy with the way the cornet looks now. A Good way to polish silver is with the hot water, baking soda, aluminum foil method, but I won't be doing that. The carnauba wax in the car polish probably lessens/slows tarmishing a lot. Some instruments have little knobs on the slides to help pull them. If using the rag pop method to pull those stuck slides there must be a long cut in the cloth the knob passes through to eliminate any stress specific to the knob because the rag will pull them up & be a ugly mess.
