The Palästinalied ("Palestine Song", also known as Kreuzlied "Song of the Cross") is a song written in the early 13th century by Walther von der Vogelweide, the most celebrated lyric poet of Middle High German literature. It is one of the few songs by Walther for which a melody has survived.
I tried to translate it as good as possible, but it was sometimes hard to translate those old medieval meanings and the version of this song is sometimes a bit different from the lyrics on Wikipedia. I hope you´ll still enjoy it!
The first line is Middle High German, the second modern German and on the bottom the English translation as always.

Ich denke, es gibt zwei Gründe, warum dieses Lied so schön ist: Erstens drückt es hohe Ideale und Prinzipien aus, die von der heutigen populistischen, kapitalistischen, selbstsüchtigen Logik nicht verunreinigt sind; Zweitens wird Volksliteratur mit ihren natürlichen Melodien und Instrumenten gespielt. Dies ist nicht nur die Geschichte der deutschen Kreuzzüge, sondern die gesamte Geschichte des Mittelalters und gilt für jede Nation. Opfere dich nicht für Ehre, Würde, Nation oder Religion... Diese Situation ist natürlich nicht in jeder Hinsicht vertretbar, aber sie war wahrscheinlich besser als die heutige korrupte Kultur und Zivilisation.

Warum mal Stolz auf etwas ist zu dem man nichts bei getragen hat finde ich nicht verständlich, aber im Großen und ganzen ist die Geschichte der "deutschen" eine der Faszinierendsten die es gibt. (Deutsch in Anführungszeichen, da ich die Geschichte von Gebieten des HRR etc. z.B. Böhmen mit einbegreife)

I love this song. I've heard more than a dozen different versions now, and there's not one I didn't like. Having said that , the versions by Tandaray and Arany Zoltan are my personal favorites. Thanks for this collection Dr. Ludwig. This is an awesome, incredibly beautiful, song. It makes my old heart soar.

Das Palästinalied stammt von Walter von der Vogelweide. Diese sehr würdig vorgetragene Version im mittelalterlichen, mittelhochdeutschen Dialekt ist auch mein absoluter Favorit. Wunderschön. Kleiner Wehrmutstropfen : Nicht alle der bekannten Strophen werden gesungen und leider kein durchlaufender Text. Viele Grüße !

Diesmal das Palästinalied nicht nur für Liebhaber, sondern für Kenner zum Vergleich. Musikalisch sind alle Varianten so echt wie möglich, doch phonetisch ist das Mhd. dem Nhd. bewusst oder unbewusst angenähert; die Gesetzmäßigkeiten des Mhd. sind für unseren Geschmack doch wohl ziemlich sonderlich bzw. schwierig, originalgetreu zu akzentuieren geworden.
@@weiterimtext8134 Dürfte die Version von Qntal sein. Wäre meine Lieblingsversion neben der leider noch Kürzeren von Annwn.
Aber ich bin auch kein wirklicher Kenner sondern nur auch von den persönlichen Interessensgebieten her im Mittelalter "zu Hause", verstehe gern etwas aus der Zeit heraus. Hier auch auf Basis einer tief im Christentum verwurzelten Seele. Von daher sind die getragenen, schon ehrfürchtig vorgetragenen Versionen die passendsten. Und auch die Geschichte zu Walter von der Vogelweide / der Kreuzzüge samt Hintergründen sind weitere Recherchen wert um nicht zu sagen : Voraussetzung, um dieses Lied auch wirklich zu verstehen. Es ist nämlich ungeheuer berührend / sehr nahegehend.

Yes this is medieval German and I can understand a lot when I can read the words. It's like a strong dialect, but as it is based on Upper German dialects, it's easier for Bavarians or Swabians to understand it^^
