We’re Marianne & Chris, a happily married couple from the UK. Marianne is a living kidney donor to her best friend, and realising that life was for living and never really knowing what’s round the corner - we decided to fulfil our dream of travelling full time.
So in March 2018 after the kids had left home, we sold our belongings, rented our house and moved into our campervan called Trudy. We set off to see the world and after vanlifing around Ireland and Europe, we grabbed our backpacks and spent 5 months exploring Central America.
Feeling like we needed a challenge, we planned the ultimate van life adventure! In Jan 2020 set off to drive around the World from UK to UK. But after arriving in Turkey, covid caught up with us and closed the borders, so we had a wonderful 18 months exploring this special country. Realising we were not going to be able to head further East, we decided to do a handbrake turn and go the other way and shipped our van to the USA.
We hope you enjoy coming with us, and we’ll continue to share our real adventures and hope you feel inspire to step out of your comfort zone and try something new.

Great video! I visited a wood carving studio in Custer, SD, just picture wall to wall finely carved duck decoys, I bought one for Mom and Dad. Nebraska is a special place, my mother lived in Nebraska a few months as a teenager when my grandfather was installing telephone lines in the area in the early 1950's in Osh Kosh, NB., her church held a bye-bye party the night before they moved on to my grandfather's next line job, lovely people in Nebraska! She said that's the first-time snow boots/over shoes were required almost on a daily basis to walk to school! Stay safe.

Well guys I’m an English person and I’ve driven down that road (well maybe not that EXACT road lol) but I live in Missouri so you came really close to us. I’ve driven to Nebraska many times transporting homeless dogs to a wonderful Nebraska rescue. Really enjoying watching your travels !!

Some years ago while on holiday from the UK with some American friends we crossed Nebraska and on a very straight road we came across some road works in the middle of nowhere, and I mean the middle of nowhere, The man on lollipop duty said we would have to wait about 30 minutes for a pathfinder to take us through the roadworks. After about 5 minutes a massive truck stopped full of bee hives with a cloud of bees around the truck and hives. The driver said he could not stop, as he would loose a lot of bees, so he was allowed to carry on through the roadworks on his own. After he left we had quite a few bees buzzing round the three cars waiting. We later learnt that they transfer the bees from South to North for the summer and then back down South for the winter. Wonder how many they loose during the trip. Only in America.

I grew up in Omaha, Nebraska and we would take trips through “out state” Nebraska and would frequently travel on some of those gravel roads for miles. You did a nice job in capturing the landscapes of Nebraska! Enjoy!
My husband I went there one snowy February morning after going to say our final goodbye’s to my husbands uncle. It was magical alone except for the snow plow driver. We saw turkeys, grouse, pronghorn, coyote, and buffalo in the snow. It was magical!

Regarding the mouse in your van I think it probably got into your engine compartment seeking a warm place to stay and then smell the food and got into your cab. You might look under the hood and see if there's any nesting taking place in your engine area

Longest train ever was in June 2001 in the Pilbar WA: The Australian BHP Iron Ore is the longest train ever recorded in history at approximately 4.6 miles (7.353 km). In the Pilbara region of Western Australia, BHP owns and runs the Mount Newman railway. This is a private rail network designed to transport iron ore. The Goldsworthy railway is the other of the two rail lines that BHP runs in the Pilbara.
The 7.3 kilometers long BHP Iron Ore on the Mount Newman line set a new world record for the longest and heaviest freight train in June 2001. Eight strong General Electric AC6000CW diesel locomotives propelled this long-distance freight train. It covered about 275 kilometers (171 miles) between Yandi mine and Port Hedland in Western Australia.
Custer State Park was one of our favorite. At the end, you can see Mount Rushmore in the distance. Be careful going thru the rock wide enough for only a school bus.❤️❤️❤️

Wow, that was an awesome turkey call, Marian. We used to have turkeys like that roaming thru' our neighborhood. I think a neighbor used to put food out for them. I haven't seen any in years. I am kinda glad....they were a pain. Noisy. Now we have sand hill cranes. 😍😀 so elegant. Wow. Didn't know those woolly mammouths existed there, still. Fascinating. I assumed they were long gone. There is a similar museum in maybe S. Dakota (?) where you can see old bones, etc

As someone who has always lived in Nebraska, there's a lot of hidden gems. They definitely found a few but I can think of more off of the top of my head. They also didn't go to the bigger cities.
I stayed at the Circus Circus Hotel in Reno on the 25th floor in 1987, And saw a Freight train go through the Station that took 15 minutes! It must have been doing at least 30/40 mph! 😁
Great start to a fantastic state. I spent 37 years in Nebraska (21 in the McCook area, 16 in Omaha) and if you keep going south-southeast from Potter and hit extreme SW Nebraska there is a place on highway 34 just outside Trenton called Massacre Canyon. It was one of the last intertribal battles of Native American peoples on August 5th 1873 between 1200 Sioux warriors and around 700 Pawnee men, women, and children. The bloody battle over some of the last and most coveted bison hunting grounds, ended with 157 dead Pawnee (mostly women and children), with a small encampment of US military soldiers preventing an almost total annihilation. It’s well worth looking into if you happen to be in the area. SW Nebraska is truly a hidden gem🤙🏼
We followed a similar path in October. I didn't know about the mammoth site in Hots Springs. We had dinner in Hot Springs at a restaurant that was also a pawn shop. That was an experience. We went through the corner of Nebraska on our way to Colorado. Stayed in Crawford and then drove through Scott's Bluff the next day. Enjoyed seeing the bison in Custer State Park again. You got some great sighting.
Wow, you *were* close to Crazy Horse! You could still see it from your car park! Seeing the wreck when you woke up, my first thought was a deer strike. Then you saw a couple carcasses. 😞😞 There's a Midwestern goodbye when you leave a family's/friend's house: "Watch out for deer and tell you folks I sez "Hi." Captain Marianne was right, mornings & evenings one has to be vigilant on the roads.
The shoulder seasons are the *best* time for those wildlife drives! You're both in the genius category in my book! Gorgeous animals, and just as in "Shrek" the donkeys stole the show. I think the prairie dog was shouting, "Brits! Brits! Brits!" 😁😁 That bison was DEFINITELY eyeing you off. 😬
Carhenge made me laugh! Reminded me of Eddie Izzard's joke: "Before Stonehenge was Strawhenge and Woodhenge."
Anybody who says there's nothing to see in the Plains isn't even trying. Besides, sometimes Nothing is really something to see. Nebraska and Kansas are mind bogglingly flat. You could watch your dog run away for two weeks there! 😆😆

We have been to Nebraska City in 2011 which we enjoyed. We stayed in a RV park called The Victorian RV Park. Nebraska City had brick paved streets in some of the residential neighborhoods which was charming. So very happy you went to the Custer State Park Wildlife Drive there in South Dakota! My impressions of Kansas was that there were oodles of wheat and Sunflower fields and it was f-l-a-t! Will try to get to the Columbian Mammoth park next time near Custer State Park. By the way, hubby learned that the Great Plains in the USA were burned hundreds of years ago in an enormous fire that killed millions of trees.
The funny thing was to see the lady that attended the coffee shop, she looked like my sister in law, which does live in Nebraska but not there, funny isn’t it?? I am glad you have discovered the country side of Nebraska…
Reminds me of working in Namibia. Years later we found photographs of a bend in the road and had no idea why we took them. Then it dawned : 4 hours driving on a straight road with possibly two cars coming the opposite way, then a bend!

This is surreal, ever since you entered the US, you've traveled virtually the exact route I've taken a few times in my bus. I took shelter in the Sydney Walmart lot last spring during a severe storm, hail, winds, it was scary! When it stopped I looked outside and all the shopping carts were up against my bus lol! No damage though, she's a tough old (blue) bird 😊. Looks forward to seeing were you go next! Stay safe!

I spent the 1st 21 years of my life in Nebraska and seemed to keep getting sucked back into it somehow over the next 3 decades...must've been the tornado effect, or possibly because my folks still lived there ❤. Finally broke free from it's grip when my dad passed in 2011. Twice in my life I've seen it nearly 70 degrees BELOW zero fahrenheit, once in Nebraska and once in Michigan...NO THANK YOU!! Now I live in your heart throb of a place, Turkiye. So stop in and share a meal when you are here next time, we are right on the water on the Dardanelles in Canakkale. Iyi Yolculuklar!!

@@annies8075 yes it was in the early to mid 80s when I saw that temperature in nebraska. I remember them saying on the news to not have any skin exposed when you were outside. To have everything covered up.

Thanks for showing my home area. Born and bred in Scottsbluff, NE. Hopefully you saw some pronghorn antelope on the drive. The original Native Americans and the later settlers had to be very tough to survive with the weather extremes.
Great video. You should check out the Serpent mound in Ohio for some real cool Prehistoric sightseeing. Lots of controversy about the real age.
Western Nebraska is cool. Haven't watched this episode yet...but we loved what we saw of Western SD and Nebraska. I loved Custer SP - I think it was National Park worthy!
In western KS almost to the Colorado line, in Gove county are the Monument Rocks. They are a series of huge chalk monoliths that come out of the flat plains around them. They are designated a National Natural Landmark. Free to drive to. Must see if you are in the area. Also if you are in Amarillo, TX, must see just south is Palo Duro Canyon State Park. 2nd largest canyon in the US. only to the Grand Canyon. In some places it is wider than the Grand Canyon (18 miles) at 20 miles across. Great video!

I live by Chappell NE, your video popped up and I had to see what you thought. I work on a farm north of Chappell and I haul Garbanzo beans up to Alliance and the grandparents live in Rapid City South Dakota so I drive those roads a lot!! FYI if you're ever back through Chadron stop at Chadron State Park we've gone there for years! It really is a neat place!
It's very possible that my mum and dad went down some of those roads in their UK van!!!!! LOL And it was a Talbot!
I've recently found their receipt for shipping their van to Canada in 1991 for a cost of £3190. They would've had to pay for their cabin in top of that, as they sailed on the ship, with their van in the hold. They spent a year travelling Canada and the USA.

In the video you’re headed to Amarillo, the minor league baseball team there is named after prairie dogs. They’re the “Sod Poodles”
Though rare, tornadoes can happen in fall and winter. Nebraska had an October tornado in 2013. And further south in the midwest had a pretty nasty one last December. I recommend following some storm chasers on social media and have Accuweather or Weather Channel apps downloaded with alerts for severe storms on.

The part of the nebraska national forest you went through is called the pine ridge district. It is a natural Forrest. The bessey district is a few hours away in the sandhills region of nebraska.
Absolutely enjoyed this. I was born by Potter Nebraska will have to check out the coffee shop looks really cool. Born and raised in the good life. Lots of small towns in our beautiful state. Also vacationed in SD and went to the Mammoth place. We loved it. You guys are awesome. Hope to do the same some day. Have a blast! Be safe.

You guys are correct when saying NE, KS, OK and TX are all in the tornado alley.

The Pine Ridge Division of the Nebraska National Forest that you drove through is native ponderosa pine, not planted. You're thinking of the Bessey Division of the NNF in the heart of the Sandhills.

Do you ever get on each other’s nerves being to close over a long time?do you ever long for your bedroom beds?is your GPS speaker English or American? I lived in Omaha Nebraska back in the last century 1996-1998. Just a suggestion. Marianne’s voice is occasionally less clear when Chris is holding the camera especially when you are driving.

Hi Chris and Marianne, we have been following your adventures for quite a while as we have been planning the build out of our own 2009 Sprinter 3500. I was bingeing some of your past episodes today, and back in Utah and Nevada, you were concerned about having extra oil and fuel filters. If I might offer you a suggestion you might want to also ensure that you have extra air and cabin filters.
