I actually think Sonic 2 for the Game Gear is kinda alright, then again I haven't beaten it yet and when I do play it I actually go for the Master System version because that extra screen space does make a difference..
I've played this game a few months ago on steam (with the better SADX mod) and i was pleasantly surprised by how good this game was, in fact this might be one of my new favourite sonic games. I enjoy almost all of the stories (besides big, I literally couldn't stand his gameplay and just used a cheat to unlock the final story) and the good stages in this game are incredibly fun. I definitely have problems with this game beyond big, but as it stands, sonic adventure is a really great game, (also, the mission mode added in SADX is incredibly fun and I don't get how so many people consider it unnecessary) and I'm glad I finally played it since I feel like every sonic fan must play this game at least once.
@@eMorphized Well, look at it this way: Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnick King Koopa vs King Bowser Only one of Bowser's names is good, and that's his US name.
Y'all think Sonic had a rough transition into 3D? SpongeBob had a rough transition into video games. This isn't even related but something to think about.
I actually really love the adventure/exploration elements of Big's stages. The fishing… is passable. I won't lie and say it's fun, but it definitely isn't horrible. It's a chore, to be sure, but it's an acceptable amount of weightlifting to endure to get through the game.
I actually kinda like Amy’s gameplay. I don’t know, it’s probably the hammer jump and the traditional plat-former feel I like about it, but that’s just me personally.
Her basic moveset is alright and she has some good levels, if she had better momentum (just a bit faster) and her stages didn't revolve around running away from some robot I say she'd be on par with Knuckles or Gamma.
I'm actually quite surprised people dislike amy, I found her to be quite fun (though not as much fun as gamma, sonic, and tails), and this is true for me in other games too like advance 1 where amy and fast rat are my go to characters because of Amy's hammer jump on springs, and sonic's air dash... though I understand where the point of view comes from...
One of the best things SA2 did was pick up the best playstyles from the first game ans expand on them. Even though people complain that they are a downgrade from their SA1 counterparts, I think overall I get more out of them in SA2 than I did in SA1.
Except for Treasure Hunting , it's a downgrade from SA1, and it makes the stages a hell lot longer, Meteor Turd is my least favorite stage in this game, but Rouge was never in SA1. So only Knuckles seem like a downgrade. And Mech stages. It's a downgrade from the Gamma stages. They are slower, jump lower, USES A FUCKING HEALTH BAR IN A SONIC GAME, and on the bright side, the time's limit's removed. That's the only point to the Mech stages defense. I recommend using the physics swap mod to change Tails and Eggman's physics to that of E-102 Gamma.
@@scoundrel8440 I actually like Meteor Herd though. Also when I said downgrade I meant the overall playstyle and not just the characters since you also didn't play as Tails or Eggman on a mech in SA1 either.
I like how you bring up the fact that parts of a game don't make the WHOLE THING bad! This is how I feel about the Sonic Storybook series, the controls were weird, but the rest of the game made up for it!
I think the best part about Gamma was that he stayed dead. No rebuilding, no amnesia, no plotholes. Gamma's story was told and thus he was gone. I can see people really latching onto Gamma because he never went through any weird character moments or flanderization nor did he become a background character that does nothing. He came, he told a heartwarming story, and he left. That deserves respect.
They changed momentum based gameplay by speed based gameplay. They changed physics based movement by railroading and paths. They changed multilayered branching levels by linear levels. They changed implicit word-built narrative into explicit conversation based narrative. They changed minibosses by nothing. They changed bosses by boss stages. They changed special stages by nothing. They changed supersonic by nothing, keeping just the very last secret level. They changed the elemental shields by a basic and magnetic shield. They replaced the elemental shield abilities and instashield by a momentum halting homming attack and a pace breaker lightspeed dash. They changed the 2 act structure by a single act structure. They changed a very polished 2d physics engine by a physics engine that breaks when you do exactly as you are supposed to do. They changed a cute cool character mascot by edgy adolescents. They changed level design built in replayability through characters' unique skills to multiple character playthroughs playing in adapted -yet linear- levels. Yes. It was REVOLUTIONARY. Many changes everywhere. If it's good or bad is up to the taste of every individual, but I think we can all agree that Sonic Adventure is not a substitute of Sonic the Hedgehog.
I don’t think there’s any play styles in this game that I actually dislike but I definitely agree that there is a tier list of quality. In my opinion, Sonic is amazing, Tails, Knuckles and Gamma are good but they have a lot of room to be improved, Amy is very “eh…?” but I think I actually quite like Big, it’s weird but he’s one of my favourites, I know everyone hates him but I actually quite like the fishing. It definitely needs improving, the camera on the bobber and the badly explained controls are far from ideal sometimes, but I didn’t dislike it and it’s really short so even if you hate every second of it you can beat it in an hour or two and it’s not difficult. Amy’s gameplay certain fits the series better than Big, but it’s slow and clunky and doesn’t really have anything going for it. It seems like it’s gonna try to go for a Survival Horror theme but Zero is a slow pushover and it’s just a slow chase aside from one or two good moments, and none of the levels are exciting. I always leave her until last as I have more fun with everyone else, she’s not terrible but her cutscenes are so similar to Sonic & Gamma’s cutscenes involving her and her gameplay isn’t great. I think an Adventure 3 could have a lot of promise, I love most of these styles and if they brought back Sonic, Knuckles, and Gamma’s style and did it like SA2 did but with SA1 controls and more Sonic stages I would really enjoy it. I never liked the mechs in that game and while I do enjoy knuckles a lot I found myself spending less than 1/4th of my playtime as Sonic, half the game was terrible mechs and 1/3rd of it was emerald hunting. I think due to the way they messed up Sonic’s controls in SA2 I actually enjoyed Knuckles the most, but I could never enjoy that game due to the mechs dragging it all down.
I actually prefer playing through the pinball sections in Casinopolis (the Sonic one), it feels like a nice change of pace to go for as much rings as possible without worrying about any enemies or hazards to rip your rings out.
Tbh, I didn't know the trash area was accessible in the Casino level as Sonic. Plus, I DO enjoy the pinball parts, especially the callback to Nights. ...until I tried to beat Nights and found out I suck too much to actually get a chance to beat the game cause it requires all stages to net a C Rank or higher, bosses included.
being someone who recently played adventure for the first time i can say it was the best 3d sonic game ever in my opinion. the characters had variety and for the most part were just copy pastes of sonic but slower. plus each character had a compelling story even amy had one even if it was kinda dumb. Edit: I didnt mean to say they were copy pastes of sonic but slower i meant to say they werent (i know i could just rewrite that part of the comment but screw you ive commited)
Thank you Garrulous64 plushie, good review. SA1 (And probably 2 at some point) is a game that I still need to fully play through, I just never got around to it for some reason
I have a few questions. How does everybody feel about combat in a Sonic game? How far would you like it to go? When has it gone too far for you? Would combat be better suited for a different character entirely?
I think it can be good. That's why i like the werehog. Some characters like Amy or knuckles are suited for good combat. If not too broken. I would like it to go with most of the cast. Too far i think would be if it breaks the game.
Glad to agree with you on saying that Sonic Adventure is my most favorite Sonic Game of all time. I actually like every story (Except Big for obvious reasons 😒) so glad I’m not the only one who praises this amazing game.
Having played the game through BetterSADX, I will say that although the Big campaign was a bit boring, everything else was fun. You say that the knuckles levels were fine, I found them amazingly fun, running around it these big open areas picking up speed and gliding. This is what made me particularly dislike them in Adventure 2, they are more confusing and force to follow z linear order. Honestly appart from the sonic stages I think the game modes in Adventure 1 are executed far better than in Adventure 2.
Sonic had the best transition to 3D, way better than Mario honestly. It took nintendo all the way to 2011 with Mario's 3D land to make a proper 2D mario to 3D. I really love amy and bigs levels. Bigs lefel can be beaten in a very short time, and i find amys levels interesting and fun. Sonics levels are still the best tho
I like the pinball stages, but only because I'm the type of player who liked all the casino levels in Sonic games because of a horrible gambling addiction. Also one of 7 people who played Sonic Spinball

honestly in my humble opinion eggman had a great transition into 3D better then bowsers anyway
my dyslexic ass read browser's and I thought
yes google did have a rough transition to 3d
Unironically yes, Eggman had several unique boss fights while Bowser only had three variations of the same boss fight but with added gimmicks.
