What makes this transformation so unique than many others across Shonen Jump series is that Luffy ain't putting up a serious, angry, overly aggressive front that we've seen with Goku, Naruto, Gon, Ichigo, etc.

The real treat in reading Gear 5 in the manga was just how much fun it was. It felt like Luffy had returned the campy rubber attacks from the very beginning. It also gave me such Jim Carey Mask vibes. Definitely have high hopes for how the anime adapts such epic fun.

The drums they use for these things hit me so hard. I was in marching band throughout highschool, and there was always something so powerful about seeing and hearing the drumline up close. The vibrations going through your body so powerfully that they literally can set off alarms on nearby cars, (it happened a few times) and that's the PERFECT feel here, it's the kind of feeling I imagine Luffy constantly has in his chest while in this form

This is probably what Oda originally intended for Luffy’s power to be now in the final saga he can truly let loose he’s finally free to draw Luffy however he wants to.
He confirmed that it wasn't, gear 5 was something he originally drew as a joke idea after the time skip. But he just loved the idea and design so much he decided to make it Luffy's peak power. And then wrote more of the story to fit it.
(he always intended the gum gum fruit to be a secret other fruit, he just didn't know what design/powers to give him)

This anime has always been off my radar since last year and everybody has been hyping it and my friends kept on saying I'm missing a masterpiece of a creation. So I decided to watch it from the very start. I started watching One Piece from episode 1 last year and I'm proud to declare that I am 11 episodes away from Gear 5 by the time I wrote this comment. It's been a long journey and I am yet to experience sanji and zoro's banger episodes (I'm at 1060 now). Glad I made the right decision on watching this anime and it's really high up there on my list. People who haven’t watched the series in it’s entirety up until now are the only ones hating gear 5. Also people who only like cliche edgy transformations/power ups.
Gear 5 would have been great if the studio did a good job with the animation. The repeat animations, unecessary camera angles and hiyori killed the hype it should have. It looks like the episode got rushed because they were padding for time. Hoping for a comeback next week.

Wow, I love how they adapted the “drums of liberation”, it’s incredible sound design that really emphasises Luffy’s sheer insanity here much more than a traditional soundtrack. It’s also a departure from the normal OP background sound which really helps it to stick out as such a unique power compared to anyone else we’ve seen.
The Drums of Liberation sound amazing, as well as The Cowbells of Freedom.
I wish they didn't put it in the trailer tbh, cause I had already been spoiled on the form, but wanted to hear the music live but thats my own fault ha ha

Dude the way Tanaka, Luffy’s VA, was moved by the animation and dedication of the animators despite their working conditions and how it made her give her all for Nika’s performance and laugh…she had me crying with her.
Edit: Guys, I’ve known that the larger studios like Toei and Sunrise have better working conditions.. I’m just an idiot and could have worded it better. To reiterate, “…dedication of the animators and how they tirelessly produce these cuts…” She stated in the live stream how she was inspired by the work of these animators (naming Vincent and Chris) and that she knows how taxing of a work it is.

My one problem with gear 4 is how serious luffy gets and we lose part of his personality. Gear 5 seems to be completely different and im loving it.

Big hats offs to toei animation for bringing gear 5 to reality far far better then i expected. The animated just suit him so much. It look like all the animators enter one piece aniverse and took all the notes and bring gear 5 to life. It is not just perfection. It is MASTERPIECE

The VA goes hard in this!! When he says “I can do everything I wanted to do!” I feel his just pure excitement and swell of power and energy. Truly amazing. I am, however scared of how the dubbed may sound. Personally, I think the dubbed Luffy sounds too young.

Rightfully so, Colleen Clinkenbeard is a great VA but her range is limited and she tries to make Luffy's voice sound too raspy for his age. I don't think Erza or Gohan make for a compelling Gear 5th

While I'm only on Whole Cake Island, I am eager to see Luffy's new form. I started one piece last year in January and since then, I've been slowly grinding it out. When this form was spoiled for me last year, I immediately bought the manga for it and saw luffy going stupid and having fun. I absolutely cant wait to see this animated
