    The first half of the ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.

    Probably the best Ryan's Shed Plans on building a shed is hardly found ever . ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxcLVQopTIucrxiVRQA0khLGQEnDVKCSMG And Ryan's takes the mystery out of different types of foundation options, etc. He even shows how to build shed with different designs. Very comprehensive, covering different roofing materials, siding, etc.

    I have a working prototype rafter template tool that is in patent pending status that I will be sharing some videos around in the coming weeks. This tool will template a rafter on framing material for the ridge beam cut and the wall plate seat cut for any number of widths and dimension lumber. No more guessing, no more needing 3+ tools and a calculator. This tool empowers the DIY'er, weekend warrior and seasoned professional to cut rafters perfectly every time. One great thing I love about this tool is that you don't have to be a professional to build a roof now.

    Great video but you really don't need a fancy construction calculator and you don't need to be accurate within 1/16. 1/8 accuracy is more than adequate for rough framing. There's a rafter chart on the side of the body of your framing square. It will tell you rafter length per foot of run for any pitch from 2/12 to 18/12 and with that information you can use a normal calculator and be accurate within 1/8th.

    • @REVerbtalk
      @REVerbtalk 5 років тому

      Yea I have to disagree, no shade ... I prefer the calculator but the precision although we're talking that 1/8. You get enough 1/8 misalignment you'll end up with a lopsided roof I say lol. I like the precision. Just dials it in and keeps everything as snug as possible even though one will not see that 1/8. Hell your saw will cut an 8th directly over your line, that's why I cut mine just above it and hammer out the 8th if it's over lol.

    nice video... but to those dealing with a 3 1/2" seat cut, I believe he meant to say he puts the mark are 8 1/2", NOT 9 1/2".
    I'm sure it was just a quick mistake, but 9 1/2" - 12" only leaves a 2 1/2" seat cut.

    Excellent, calculator took care of math which good because I wanted to learn how to mark out the rafter, not solve right triangles. In measuring the overall run , the building measured 6' 3/4". If the building is 6' , then the sheathing would be 3/8" each side to add a total of 3/4 to overall run. The seat measured 4", that was demonstrated as 3 1/2 " plus 1/2" ( I assume 1/2 " sheathing) . If 1/2" was added to each side the overall run should total 6' 1" for outside to outside. Maybe I missed something, but not too concerned since the method along with clear instruction topped my list.

    A lot of the stuff is very well explained but a competent roof framer should learn and know how to do this using the ”rise per run ratio” method and also by using “degree of pitch” method, which can also be applied to many other applications in construction.

    Hello, do Canada use the metric system. I have worked in Ireland and Australia and use the metric system. Also we always had the Pitch with degrees,ie, 25, 30, 45 degrees on plans and drawings. Use quick square, set to degree and use the Calculator or Roofing ready reckoner by Rick Gloss.

    Very good method but my knowledge in geometry overcome this problem when I build my own house with gable and a dormer. If you run the point of intersection in the birds mouth along the length of the rafter and cut it you will notice that the rafter is divided into three pieces. Over all length of the rafter, the length of the diagonal with respect to the rise and run, and the overhang.
