Nice presentation. As a native NEW YORKER, I simply love DETROIT! I fell in love with the city, it's culture, and overall history back in my BG (Bowling Green) college days. Some of the classic buildings and sites of Detroit remind me of the vintage landscape of NYC.
Detroit was my home 22 years ago and I still call it home today. I grew up visiting “The Island” as we called it. You video was very well done. Thank you.
4:23 mark. I remember riding in the back of my father's pick-up truck as a kid in 1986 when the bridge was being worked on. The construction made the bridge temporarily into a narrow one or two lane path in both directions and you could see directly into the water outside of the narrow lanes...scary stuff as a kid.
My mother and father moved to Detroit from Colman Mich. in the 30s my dad would tell me how great the island was and without AC people would take blankets and pillows to the island to sleep on hot summer nights. We would take our kids down to the Zoo before it closed, great for small kids with the raised walkways. Glad to see the rebirth now we take our G kids there.
Hi Helena , let me start off by saying I do NOT feel in anyway bad about celebrating thanksgiving. I not only descend from a famous Pilgrim my great grandmother was full blooded Potawatomi! My family were also some of the earliest settlers of Michigan. History is RIFE with examples of mans inhumanity to man. we should look beyond it. Detroit will make a comeback after being ruined by statist/leftist politics AND obsession over race.
It was a lovely place to visit, which we did fairly often on Sunday drives when I was a kid. Especially remember the aquarium--with our favorite, a big old catfish with a dislocated jaw that we made a point of visiting. The grounds were always beautifully kept. I had some photos of Mom and my brother and me...of course Dad was taking the picture so he's not in it. But he always regaled us with stories of Belle Isle's younger days when he was a kid.
4:04 mark... Imagine in 1915 sneaking your parents Ford Model T or A & driving across the Belle Isle bridge and while on the island the bridge burned 😳
Thank you for your video.. I visited the island for the first time yesterday and I was surprised to not find more videos on UA-cam on the history of the island.
Very Nice video. But you failed to mention that the only marble lighthouse in North America is on the island and not visited by many only way you can get there is by foot. I grew up on the island has my father worked there till his passing in 1971. Still visit the island several times a year if not once a month. Have a great day.
I love it. I'm actually on belle isle ritenow and been coming here for years. I can't even get my ppl who live next to it to even come smh but it's cool I let my uncertainties go
Great video.. Thank you for the history I never knew about.I just remember Mayor Kilpatrick was going to close it down. And then we got Mayor Dugon. What a difference a Mayor can do. Saving Detroit
This video was very well done. I hope you got an A+ on your project!! Seems like island will get better and better now that the DNR has taken over management of the island.
A city full of crime, poverty, and political upheaval isn't exactly a description that would make anyone want to come visit. I don't think our narrator thought that statement out as clearly as need be. Just the clip before the fellow was saying it wasn't dangerous like people think and now here she is wrapping it all up saying just the opposite. No one's going to drive through danger to reach something tranquil.
Helena! i was in your wayne state film class. remember me, margareta? you were one of my favorite people in class. thanks for making this video and hope you're well
Fascinating history, amazing architecture. Enjoyable plants and animals. You might enjoy seeing the video we made about Belle Isle Conservatory & Aquarium from our visit there in 2016. Have a great weekend!
It’s now owned by the State (MI). Not Detroit .. so it’s a State Park now. It’s slowly but surely coming together. A lot of construction. It’s definitely more family oriented and safer . It needs the community’s hand in it more. I see a lot of volunteering to keep it up to date but it needs constants updating
Correction: still owned by Detroit but now managed by Michigan State Parks as a State Park starting in 2013 with a 30 year lease. It is now being maintained and run by a bureau that cares about the beautiful island. Crime has gone down substantially and is safer and much more pleasant to enjoy its glory.
Bear River you need to pay a visit. Since the state of MI took possession of the island from Detroit, they have done a marvelous job of cleaning it up and making it family friendly. Other than the zoo (which hasn’t been rehabilitated) the rest of the Park is just as nice now as it was when I was a kid back in the ‘50s and ‘60’s.
Wow, water brings you closer to god, it's very refreshing to hear someone with so much intelligence, come visit us at det Grace Church of the Nazarene 18020 hoover rd
Was at Belle Isle last year and the aquarium was definitely open although not completely populated with fish. About half of the tanks were empty. Planning to come back and check it out again soon. The zoo is a whole nuther story tho’...

All the things you say about visiting the isle as a kid are very memorable to me!
I heard it's nice to spend time there in the morning before the troublemakers get out of bed.
This is a REALLY well-made Belle Isle small documentary!!! As a Detroit Native and long-time Belle Isle myself, this is REALLY good.
Helena- Nice job on your video! I really enjoyed learning about Belle Isle!! Thanks for caring enough to do this.
I love Belle Isle💜 i have been coming here since I was 5 I’m 27 now . If I’m not there everyday I’m there every other. Detroit’s little gem.

My grandmother would always have her church picnic up there. And I've also had relatives that would go up there to pray as well.
My ancestor Barnabas Campau sold to city in 1840s My mom was a Campau

AMEN!!! I KNOW GOD IS THERE...
fertile land
When you sat in the lap of James. S. Scott statue, if you rubbed his nose it was supposed to be lucky. As of 1950’s his nose shiny!
Thanks for history lesson 😉
Great video sister

I don’t think it’s pronounced “ob-ji-wa”, I think it’s Ojibwa - oh-jib-wa.
save it? it hasn't gone anywhere. no need for cafés. just need aquarium & zoo.
that zoo looks like something out of mad max now.
Was at Belle Isle last year and the aquarium was definitely open although not completely populated with fish. About half of the tanks were empty. Planning to come back and check it out again soon.
The zoo is a whole nuther story tho’...
I think you mean Ojibwe Indians
The Indians sold it for cheap. I would have insisted on 2 rolls of Toilet Paper also! ijs.
AhhhhhBJewUh. Girl this is horrible. You made a whole documentary and mispronounced my tribes name the whole time
Like and I’m an Anishinaabe Detroiter. Horrible
It’s oh-JIB-way and oh-DOW-uh
