1982 Honda CB900F Barn Find - Restoration - New tires with a NoMar Tire Changer - What a Pain !

- In this video I condense 6 hours of pain and suffering into 19 minutes. I decided to use my "new to me" No Mar tire changer to do the CB900F tires.
Let me tell you, these things are not as easy to use as they make it look, especially trying to get old hard tires off.
I struggled ALOT just to get the wheels to lock into the clamps. The rest of my issues are likely down to poor technique, but it wasn't easy.
I now remember why I usually take my tires to a pro for installation.

I used to always insist on doing my own tires - nah - I now take them to a shop. Let them wrestle with it. And if they cause damage, it's on them. Many shops charge very little to do tires here in Atlanta GA. Let the pro handle it.
I take my newer bikes to a local guy, they charge 120 a pair if I take the wheels off. (Pretty average here) With the project bikes , I’ll do my own as long as I haven’t. Painted the wheels. Saves me a few $ if the budget is strict.
Oh, that's expensive.... Cycle Gear (national retail store here in the US) only charges $25 each, and even less if you buy the tires from them... ) lol @@true-moto-resto
50 each here plus tax. I paid 300 for the NoMar changer so it pays for itself in 3 uses
@true-moto-resto doesn't look like an easy method to me - From what I saw in your video... Struggle is very costly, frustrating, time-consuming..... Been there too.
@@HorsepowerHouse yea the first set was a paint for sure . I have figured out some of my mistakes now, so not as bad anymore. I had the rear clamp in the wrong slot so that was the main issue
As someone who has the exact NoMar system you have. Here in the States Practice makes perfect! Lube is needed I lather the rim and tire also lube the drop center valley of the rim. Also the plastic blocks do not lock the rim as well as the higher mount blocks. Had to order them extra? But the best thing I found is to warm the tires up. It’s like night and day difference in removal and install. During cold weather I leave the old and new tires in furnace room over night. Or out in Sun to bake them. Have watched guys at race track warming tires up with space heaters prior to install. Bought my NoMar used from someone frustrated with it! Have owned it over 10 years and done dozens of my own and friends tires! The orange thing is great also the other old style pin clamps to press tire into drop center helps. Both can be found as knock offs on Amazon. The more tires you do the easier it becomes. I am 64 and just did some dirt bike tires with the higher mounting clamps to get around rotors. I get 25-40 US dollars from the young guys needing tire changes? Good luck and cheers!
Cheers, I used alot of lube, but I had one of the locking blocks in the wrong hole , so that was a big part of my problem. Live and learn, thanks for the tips.
Im only using this in the summer, winter here I'd never get anything warm enough when its -20C outside
That was painful to watch. I have the Harbor Freight changer with the Mo Jo upgrade. I think it's better overall than No Mar especially after watching this. Did you check the date on those old tires? I've mounted those exact Shinko tires. They almost fall on the rim. Got to use the opposite side drop center, keep the tire in there.
Problem was one of the rim holders was in the wrong position, so the rim kept popping off.
I had been considering buying a nomar to make life a bit easier. After watching this I’ll stick to spoons and my 2x4 wood box.
Well, after I didn’t this I found that I had one on the clamps in the wrong hole so that was my issue. I’m sure if it’s used properly it would be fine.
Haven't quite finished your video just yet. I'm laughing a bit because I put up 2 videos on my channel using the nomar. It can be a struggle. I have gotten much better at it using bar clamps to squeeze the tire to get the wheel in to the blocks and keep the tire in the drop center of the wheel while bring the bar around. Also "upgraded" to buying 3 XtraHand® Clamp Tire Bead Depressor Tool from nomar. These are very helpful. The videos on the nomar channel must be using the softest tire in the world.
LOL, yea my back is still in recover from that episode . I saw those extra clamps on the no mar videos , they look very helpful. I’ll have to watch your videos and pick up some tips ! Love your channel BTW !
Be careful mate apparently the old comstars are notoriously easy to distort. Very soft unlike the battleax..
Cheers. Thanks for the warning. Everything is still straight. Had them on the balancer and running true! Thank goodness
Comstars are not easy. Old tire? cut off wheel in the angle grinder, what are you going to do with a 20 year old tire?. Put the new tire to be fitted in a race tire warmer for 20 minutes, makes them much more pliable and easy to fit
Don’t have race tire warmers and they’d cost me more than unpaid for the NoMar. tires were outside in the sun 35 degrees C . Having said that, I do most of my restoration work in winter so I sure won’t be using the no mar then LOL
I feel better knowing comstars are not easy
Oh my goodness. That was insane. I hate removing and installing tires.
Yea, not fun. At least I figured out why they kept popping out of the clamps (I had one clamping puck in the wrong spot) But getting them in to the clamps is still a mystery
holy smo0ke Straycat good job
Thanks, I lost 5 lbs in sweat I think !
It's a struggle sometimes! 😀
Lol yes so it seems
Just cut the dam thing off.
That’s one solution , however my preference is leaning how to use this No Mar. otherwise I may as well cut them off and use tire irons to install…. Or just take them to my tire guy. So… I’ll keep trying and learning, I gotta be doing something wrong
@@true-moto-resto nothing wrong with learning all for that. And I don’t think you were doing anything wrong just an old very hard tyre
