Great video. Was there an issue before rebuilding the carbs? I have a 1982 cb900c and only cylinders 3 and 4 are firing. I just bought it so not sure what was done before. Thanks
The bike had sat in a barn for many many yrs. This was just one video of many showing the full restoration of the bike. Carbs are just one part of the process (2 videos on carb rebuild , this was part 1) For your bike, start with the basics. Does it have spark on 3 and 4? Does it have good compression on 3&4? Does is come alive on 3 and 4 if you squirt some fuel down the carbs throats ? These carbs are quite complex, 3 jets per carb and on some model years you have to drill and tap one of the jets to remove it. There are accelerator pumps and air cut valves etc But, start simple and track the problem down to spark, compression or fuel first
Thank you for recording and posting your content! I just bought an ‘86 GSX-R 750 and I will be going through it as well. Your videos will be a huge help as this is my first GSX-R and also my first Suzuki.
Good luck with your project ! Sounds like a fun one. They’re very cool bikes
Come on, you can do the valve adjustments. A man of your immense talent. Love your work, keep it up. Just about the best channel to subscribe to
Thank you very much! Yea I’ll do the valves lol
For plugging holes, I bought different diameters of round weather strip (sometimes called climate backer rod) and cut little pieces off to stuff into holes. It usually comes in bag all rolled up
Great idea Lorne !
"Because I'm an idiot" totally made me laugh! And man, can I identify with that one. Great video - I truly admire the breadth of your "comfort zone". Thanks so much for sharing your experience! 🤜🤛
Thanks for watching !
Once a week ?
Every 6-12 months. But that’s for. Ike’s in my collection that are not being ridden. I will say that , any of my current restorations are now dry stored , no fuel in the tank at all, carbs drained. So doing a 6 month heat cycle isn’t necessary If it’s a bike that’s just away for winter storage only, I don’t start them at all Over the winter. Just fuel stabilizer, oil change, battery tender, etc
Do you miss the DCT on the Africa twin? Would still trade the Africa Twin having the s1000XR for a while now? Thank you
Yes, i miss the DCT to some degree, but I missed the general feel of the AT more. I still prefer the BMW now that I've had it for a full season. I just bought a new Triumph Tiger (I kept the BMW) which feels more like the AT. you can see the video on the New Bike Triumph tiger here on my channel. Ill also do a end of season 5000km review on the BMW shortly
Dude you’re a bit hard on yourself, not an ‘idiot’. Really enjoying your videos! Thanks for sharing 🙂 🇦🇺
Thanks for watching and commenting ! Much appreciated !
Yes, finding mis-matched and unoriginal cam cap bolts really gives me the irrits, too. Sign of someone being less than careful in the past... You may have difficulty finding all the original types that you need. Maybe you can visit a breakers/ wreckers and swish through their bins of random bolts? You may just find what you need in there, esp. if you have a correct one in hand for reference.
I managed to order all new ones, found some online
I'm really enjoying all your great restorations, top quality work , look forward to the next episode 👍.
Thank you very much! I appreciate you watching Darren!
Love watching the work you are doing and like reading all the comments👍
Thanks Don, I appreciate you watching !
I own the same bike the rear brake pedal has went solid anyone know why and they do need alotve time to clean them mine is covered up but the dust still manages to get in
Piston in the rear master cyl is likely seized up. Disassemble , clean and out in a rebuild kit.
Coming along nicely. Is that your Gretsch collection next to the engine? 👍👍
Part of it. I have 4 Gretsch guitars, unfortunately my guitar to skill ratio is way out of whack. I really don’t do them justice .
@true-moto-resto 🤣🤣 I am much the same when it comes to guitar skill. However I manage to have.... 1 Gretsch 1 Martin 1 Fender Hmmmmm, sorta reminds me of certain George Thorogood lyrics!
@@ecttreker9816right on ! Aside from the Gretsch guitars I have a Godin arch top acoustic. I really need to get back at it, I’ve not practiced in too long .
You’ve probably already moved past this point in your restoration, but you might want to get a complete set of new cam cap bolts. Due to their age and the stresses they’ve been subjected to (including people not using a torque wrench to properly tighten them) they tend to break when torquing them properly. Love the project and enjoy the updates. Looking forward to the next show.
Thanks, Good tip, finding them for reasonable $ here in Canada is a problem. Shipping and duties from the USA and Europe is madness. Kawasaki Canada has none. I have some on the way , but not all. Likely the ones there that are incorrect were snapped off at some point. On your advice, I ordered the rest of the bolts. I’ll change them all. I’ve not removed the current ones yet, hopefully they don’t snap coming out.
@ you’re welcome. I’m glad to help however I can. I have a small fleet of motorcycles as well and have encountered many of the same issues as you when restoring them. I enjoy your videos and they give me a different perspective than mine when working to solve issues. You’ve helped me with a few things without knowing and the least I can do is return the favor.
U do lovely work! I do wonder which of these lovely machines u r going to cull next? ( lack of space) I got a bit sick of my resto m od fz961 And decided to build myself a baby Honda based 800cc V8 Cross plane always wanted one mated to a kawa zr 1000 crankcase gearbox etc Big task but getting there keep up the great work
Thanks Karl, I just culled 7 bikes from the collection, 2 more to go (CB1 and the Bandit)
Very nice, good work, I do like to see older bikes being looked after properly.
Thanks !
😂 Couldn't stop laughing when you called yourself an idiot. Shouted it to myself many time's. Im sure most of us have.😂
I seem to donut alot LOL
Man, you’re in deep. Have you considered building a bigger workshop.?😂 Thanks for the weekly reminder to just maintain and be happy with the few bikes I have. Good to see the ZX turning the corner.
Definitely not building a bigger shop LOL. The more space the more I collect. I just culled 7 bikes from the collection so that will help
"The big book of resto" - you should publish your notes in a big book of resto on AMZN , I m sure it would be a success regarding your xp gained through all your projects.
Lol, I think there are lots of guys that know more than me, but that’s a lot for the complement
It's starting to come together, when you get to the second bike a black frame will look better with the RBS paint scheme! keep these vid;s coming.
Cheers, thanks for watching
The decision to paint the cam cover was a right choice . The cam cover looks so much better now
Thanks , yea just polished and clear coated.
Great progress so far, and the parts are looking fantastic. Regarding the painting of the smaller parts, have you considered maybe using a "mini" paint gun, might be a lot less of a hassle for you? Looking forward to the next instalment. 😎👍.
Thanks. Yea I have several mini guns, but to be honest they’re more of a PITA to use. I’d rather dial down the fan pattern on the bigger gun. I use the mini guns for touch up sometimes
At last , thanks for the video. I have a 1998 model ran fine when put in storage but after years I came to start her and fuel was pouring out of carbs . Took them off and sonic washed them and also replaced every seal in the carbs also new carb rubbers as the old ones were solid . She was a runner again . Not used just put away in the garage as a runner but now she wont start . Upon trying to start she backfires and that's it . Took the tank off and put a direct fuel feed to carbs and happy days she started so put the tank back on after several start ups and she ran with tank on . All fresh fuel by the way . I could feel the pump pulsing and thought that was it shes good to go ! No shes not having it so bought a new pump just incase it was working independently 😢😢. No shes still dosnt want to play. I've checked all fuses and your explainastion is the best I've seen . Am from England and we have what's called Haynes manual, that rubbish. I have 2 Honda trained mechanics and this has got them stumped . They haven't been to the bike but over the phone we have addressed every possible Avenue apart from bridging the wires as you did . Haynes dosnt show another detail a as for as trouble shooting they are saying valve clearens and other crap not related. I joined a forum and they are all saying the same jobs we have already covered . Shes a 1998 and tidy for roads in this country but yours is mint . Anyway time out I've probably board you enough but thanks last check is bridge wires ! Something am not comfortable doing but you have helped .
Glad the video was helpful. Yes, try the jumper wire, it’s easy to do. You can also pull the fuel line off at the same time and do a flow test to see how much fuel is getting delivered from the pump. If it runs fine when u bypass the pump off a separate fuel supply, then it is likely a problem between the petcock and the pump or filter . Assume u checked the petcock I assume you changed the filter Check the fuel lines too, make sure none have collapsed. One caution I would give is this… I use an ultrasonic cleaner too…However, they are not the be be all and end all. In fact there are places in the carb circuits that the UScleaner will not help. I always clean via 3 methods on each set of carbs. 1) chemical - Use a quality carb cleaner, and let them soak for a day. make sure Andy rubber diaphragms are removed first, and make sure u can see the carb cleaner spray out of all the correct orifices to show they’re clear 2) mechanical, use a high E guitar string or carb cleaner tools to run through the carb passages etc 3) ultrasonic with a good cleaner product in it. So many times carbs get ultrasonically cleaned and they really are not clean. It happens.
good job !
cheers !
I’m trying to bring an 81 cb900c back to life and after cleaning the carbs I found a tiny ball bearing, tightly wound spring, and what seems to be a brass square with a circular nub on one end in the bottom of my ultrasonic cleaner. I have no idea where it came from and was hoping it was something from the accelerator pump but the little brass square is still in the carb body for the accelerator pump. Any idea where this might have come from?
It’s been so long since I cleaned the carbs on the CB900. I’ve done so many carbs, they all become a blurt. On some carbs , the small springs and balls are from the choke assembly. The rod that actuates the choke plungers is held in place by a detention ball and spring so it stays out and doesn’t go back in (choke off) unless you push the rod in. These are usually on the carbs that have the choke actuator rod right on the carbs and not in the handle bars. Mikuni flat slides are like this On the CB900 carbs, I honestly don’t recall. But I will say there are 3 videos on these carbs here on my channel It took me 3 attempts to get them properly sorted out On the pre 82 carbs, there is a slow speed jet that you have to drill and tap to extract it in order to properly clean it. I can only suggest watching all 3 videos and hope that you see what your looking for Thanks for watching as commenting
So the owner must have pretty happy to see it look so good!
I think so! LOL
Nice work very well done as always top content,a pleasure to watch !
Thank you very much! Thanks for taking the time to comment and watch
Well done. Tell me, what brand windshield is on your bike? It looks like a nice one.
Hi there, I don’t recall off hand. I do have a video here in my channel, I think I say in that video where I got it . The mount kit I bought seperate to the glass and had to modify the plexiglass to fit
Great work! Do you mind posting the details of that dent puller?

Just awesome! Wish I had your skills and garage. How did you match the paint?
Thanks, I got the paint when I took another CB400 tank and had it optically scanned at the paint store . I still had a bit left over.
Looks good enough if the owner wants to retain the " battle hardened " appearance of the bike .
Yes, the owner was happy. Just a display tank
Great job 👍
Thanks 👍
You must live, eat and sleep bikes if you`re working in pyjamas 😀
Ya know how it is Jerry, head to the shop to check something before bed, get distracted and next thing you know your swinging a wrench LOL
I have the same one , where do you get the parts mate ? I’m really struggling
EBay, CMSNL , Depends on the parts . Cam and starter chain came from the UK. Rotor and electrical stuff is basically available every where. What are you looking for?
Are you telling me you went from a Valkyrie to a triumph? No way🙏🏼
Yep, check out my New Bike video I posted last week. 6 bikes gone, 1 new one in
It sure is big and heavy. Not a bad thing but by no means a canyon carver
I just traded it in a new Triumph tiger , Rode the Valk for 2 years
Option to get bike running right before resto is a good one. I’m about to restore a 1979 CB900f and will do that myself as a precaution. Thanks for all the tips you pass on to viewers.
Your welcome, thanks for watching and commenting !
Ich habe auch eine cb1 selbst stärkeren Maschinen konnte sie mithalten
Das kann man nicht vergleichen höchstens mit einer africa twin
Please tell me that bike is gonna be original green I seen some on other colours, none of them look as good as original ninja green
Yep, OEM green, Pearl white and blue. The next one, a 1990 will be red, black and sliver ZXR750 euro colours (I already have a green 1990)
@true-moto-resto when you're done with those bikes you keep them? Sell them?

Yes, but all worth it in the end (I hope). I think the 1990 I’ll be doing next will be even more work :(
Great to watch a vid of someone doing normal stuff. Don’t mind the cleaning bit myself 👍
Cheers Gary!
not the most interesting part of the job but it needs to be done.
Exactly !
Very tedious and not very glamorous work, but needs to be done.
Yea, it’s all worth it in the end. These are the things that have to be done if you want it to look right
Gotta admire your commitment to seeing a project through to the end. Think I would’ve cut my losses on that one. Great content though!
My stupidity knows no bounds ! Lol
Windscreen washer fluid next to welding 😳. Be careful there i want to keep watching your hobbies 😉
I was thinking the same!
Good point, I had not even thought of that ! Thanks !
Nice job! I'm having a 1990 ZX-7 restored. Currently, it has a polished frame and I'm wondering if it should be repainted or left polished. The purist in me says to repaint it, but it will be extra. Most everything else is getting repainted and or rebuilt.
I’m a hater on the polished frames , I like OEM. If your stripping the whole bike you may as well get it painted
@true-moto-resto I feel the same. Thank you!
@@sgt13echojust make sure to prime the raw aluminum with epoxy primer
@@true-moto-resto yeah I saw that you mentioned that in your video which was great. It's a restoration shop in California that's doing the restoration I'll verify with them that they're doing that so that the paint sticks. Thank you
you have the mapp gas, try the low temperature aluminium brazing rods as a filler on the frame/swingarm!
Yes! You know I do have those in my Amazon wish list !. I should get some I guess
