  • Building our outdoor kitchen was our most challenging, but also most rewarding project. In the two months since completion, we have been enjoying it regularly, thanks to our mild Phoenix winter.
    Whether it's just the two of us (and all our pets) doing some grilling, or entertaining friends, it's been an ideal venue. Of course, we're never 100% satisfied, and have made a few small tweaks, and have plans for bigger changes in the future.
    Also, we've gotten a lot of questions regarding costs. I went through our shopping lists, estimates, and receipts, and did my best to reconstruct what those were.
    As always, feel free to post questions, and follow @shoestringmartha on instagram for updates on past projects and previews of future projects.
    Accessories we used (affiliate links included):
    Mophorn Outdoor Kitchen 14W x 20H Inch Wall Construction Stainless Steel Flush Mount for BBQ Island, 14inch x 20inch, Single Door with Vents -- HEADS UP! The opening was too narrow for a standard propane tank. It was too late to return it, so we ended up just buying a smaller tank. Bonehead move, but we made it work.

    Mophorn BBQ Access Door 20W x 14H Inch, Horizontal Single BBQ Door Stainless Steel, Outdoor Kitchen Doors for BBQ Island, Grilling Station, Outside Cabinet

    Mophorn 18x20.5 Inch Outdoor Kitchen Drawers Stainless Steel with Handle for BBQ Island, 18 x 20.6 x 12.7 Inch
    amzn.to/2RqQpal
    Also, one should note that the handles are different on each item. Just a heads up, in case that's a deal breaker for you.
    The drink trough is an Ariel 42" zero radius undermount bar sink, and we got it from Overstock. We top-mounted it, in case we ever have to replace it.

    I've even seen people use a length of gutter, but we wanted something sturdier and wider, with straight sides.

    I have no doubt you both are glad this project is finished. It is a lot of work and your vision can now be shared with others. Thank you for posting. I would have purchased a concrete mixer from harbor freight at a very low cost which would have made you much more efficient with the pouring of your concrete table top.

    • @ShoestringMartha
      @ShoestringMartha  Рік тому

      We did consider it. but then we'd have to store it. I ended up getting pretty good at hand-mixing though, granted, an entire countertop was a bit much. 😀

    Very nice video, enjoyed watching the original build and this new one. I'm curious how you keep the rain water out of your cabinet under the stove or does it run off somewhere else. The concrete counter top came out very nice.

      Thank you! We have had a lot of rain over the past couple of week, and were pleasantly surprised by how little actually got in. Also, the whole thing is about 1/8th inch off the ground, so that water can flow through and out.

    I'm just starting to design an outdoor kitchen. I love the drink trough you put in. I think you said you got it at Wayfair. I've searched and I can't find anything like it. Do you remember the description, item number, manufacture, or anything that might help me find it. Loved the series. Very informative and helpful. Turned out great!! thanks.

    Nice work !!! I have started my project as well after watching your videos. One question I am having is how did you anchor the structure to the ground. Did you just place everything on the decking board or did you anchor it with a fastener. Also are the decking boards anchored to the concrete ?

    • @ShoestringMartha
      @ShoestringMartha  3 роки тому

      We didn't use any anchors, relying instead on the weight of the concrete countertop to keep everything in place. You can get a closer look at the leveling we did with the decking in part one. I timestamped it: ua-cam.com/video/xxlgRifkVe0/v-deo.html Good luck with your build!

    Just an awesome build you two. I have a quick question. I too have the “landscape door” that I’m guessing you are using as a storage door? I bought it thinking it was different but now I have it and wondering how to utilize it. Do you have a post of a video that shows it open so I can see just how it is utilized?

    • @ShoestringMartha
      @ShoestringMartha  Рік тому

      Thank you! I don't have any media showing it, but we were using it storing for bags of wood chips for the smoker. We were hoping to put lump charcoal in there too, but the interior space is a bit too small for those huge bags. Since we haven't really been using wood chips lately, it now holds the popcorn popper we recently acquired. 😄🍿

    Great outdoor kitchen looks beautiful, how height is the bar and how much overhang did you leave to sit under the bar?

    • @ShoestringMartha
      @ShoestringMartha  2 роки тому

      Thanks so much! The bar is 35” to its underside, and the slab is 2.5” thick, making it 37.5” total. The overhang is 9”.

    hi, can you let me know how you made your drink trough cover. you gave me the idea to add it to the kitchen i built but all the rain water is driving me crazy. i do use it for other things though.

      If I recall, the top panel was the size of the outer lip, and the bottom panel was the size of the inner diameter, and I just screwed them together. However, it didn't hold up to the weather and warped pretty badly, so we had to toss it. Do recommend better materials, or sealing. A bit of weatherstrip around the inner layer might be nice too.

    Inspired by your project. Never used metal framing before though. What resources would you suggest to learn how to work with them?

    • @ShoestringMartha
      @ShoestringMartha  2 роки тому +1

      UA-cam of course! 😄 I can’t find the particular videos I watched, but I am a fan of this fella. I think this vid came out after our project, but hopefully if can help you! He’s doing house walls, but a lot of the concepts are the same. For an outdoor kitchen, you’re just constructing a series of little walls, connected together.

    In the video you mentioned using shims to level the project. What material did you use for shims?

    • @ShoestringMartha
      @ShoestringMartha  3 роки тому

      There are pieces of Trex all the way around, to raise the framing off the ground. For leveling, we jammed wood shims (the kind you buy in a pack) between the Trex and the framing. The SE corner had quite a drop off, so we used pieces of 1" lumber between the Trex and framing.

    • @ShoestringMartha
      @ShoestringMartha  3 роки тому

      You can see it a little better in the framing video. I timestamped the link: ua-cam.com/video/xxlgRifkVe0/v-deo.html

    Is there any heat shield under the grill? cement board? I'm currently building my own outdoor kitchen and all resources that I've read warn about storing the propane tank under the grill. How did you get around that? Thanks

    • @ShoestringMartha
      @ShoestringMartha  Рік тому

      There is none, but you could put a layer on cement board there. If you are re-using a standalone grill, like we did, you would have to cut a hole in it to access the battery for the igniter.

    Did you put wire support in smaller section of the concrete? I wonder...is there a rule of thumb for using the wire support in concrete?

    • @ShoestringMartha
      @ShoestringMartha  2 роки тому

      Yes, there is remesh all the way across the slab. You can get a closer look of that in the countertops part of the build: ua-cam.com/video/o-RWrLGGgpM/v-deo.html -- I'm sure there is some sort of formula out there, that involves thickness of concrete, distance of overhang, and such and such -- but we're just operation on Google, UA-cam, and guesswork over here. 😂

  • @johnkeesee3252

    Why did you decide to put the green egg on tile vs. concrete?

    • @ShoestringMartha
      @ShoestringMartha  2 роки тому +1

      A bunch of small reasons. Mostly, we wanted to keep the continuous flow from the side of the grill, across the platform, and down the small side - like a waterfall. Secondarily, we wanted to frame and pour just one slab of concrete.
