Ending is clearly an emotional roller coaster.
Also best tip about productivity: if you feel unproductive check on 3 simple things:
- physical activity
- eating
- sleep
If you lack any of those it gets a lot harder to gain motivation
yeah, i assume general wellness. you aren't doing these, there is no way you can accomplish anything.
I think I know mine but even doing that requires time & motivation, its so easy to not do stuff but it just puts you deeper into a rut.
pretty much
And start doing even though you don't feel like you wanna do.
I watched a video on motication from a channel(which is related to mental health), It's a cycle were you get motivation when you do and accomplish something that you like, and you need motivation to do the same. Motivating yourself is about beaking that cycle and start *DOING* things.
Hope this helps
@@sharathkumark9692 a lot of youtube channels about mental health simply don't know what they're talking about. you have to figure out the line between "i'm feeling a bit lazy to start" vs "i'm burnt out on this thing" and forcing yourself to start in the latter case is incredibly unhealthy. for the former case, you should still try to figure out what that barrier is to starting in the first place, so rather than having to force yourself to start, you can craft an environment for yourself where starting, if you're actually enjoying it, becomes easier.
relying on "motivation" isn't necessarily the best idea in the first place - you have to rely on the environment to be set up to make you succeed. and if you can't craft that environment... that's where you have to look deeper.
dude, dont stop making these kind of videos, they r super helperful
mega helpful! The advice he puts out is incredible!
hio! thanks bud :)
@@ThePrimeagen can you please provide detail of your headphone. Apart from that video is superuseful
Seriously.. i generally ignore every video with useful title but I always click yours. Because I know you say the truth
“Pursue making how you feel align with reality as opposed to letting reality be aligned to how you feel.”
Extremely powerful words and a great lesson to everyone.
That's a worry, because I don't understand what they mean. Help?
@@oakla-video512 from what i understand, it's, in simple terms:
feel whats actually happening in reality. dont change reality in your head by following your emotions.
"pursue making how you feel align with reality" means "feel things that reflect reality." eg. if you got a job, be happy. yes, you didnt get the job you wanted, but you got a job, so dont ignore that by ONLY focusing on what you didnt get.
the opposite is also true, "letting reality be aligned to how you feel," which means, "dont change reality in your head by following your emotions." following the previous example, it means feeling SO sad abt the job you never got that you literally forget you got your 2nd top choice.
(thats what i got but someone better fact check me)
I didn't it tho...
hmm i have a way to find thing around the reality that can inspire or make me feel better when doing some task
Love the advice series: keep it up! Focused on software for over 20 years, and these are some of the least communicated, hardest to learn topics...
I came for the vim, I stay for the friendship!
snap! thanks bud :)
Yoda voice: "Vim leads to friendship." 👽😂
@@avidrucker Yoda: Friendship Vim leads to"
I really really appreciate your "hot takes", they're resourceful and inspiring actually, and more of a wise man's advice than a hot take in my opinion.
just trying out here :)
Me too🙌🏻🙏🏻
😗 Me too.
4:57 was too close to home for me; I, too, had no one telling me these things earlier, and it is difficult, but that is what strengthens you.
Thank you for these videos Prime, the general developer community is extremely luck to have you as a role model. Keep it up dude!
that is pretty dang nice my friend.
Thank you for sharing this.
I had quit 3 jobs thinking I'm not enough and it was not normal to feel that way.
yeah, we all feel this. Its completely normal.
I love these. A virtual mentor.
out here trying
I relate 100%. Going through a moment in life where I’m forced to reflect back over a decade: accomplishments, motivation, and lack thereof.
Thanks for putting your thoughts and feelings out there in these videos. They come at a very timely moment for me…
that is great to hear. thanks for the nice note.
I grew up without a dad too, and this shit still hits home at 28 years old still trying to get a career in tech and do so many things that simply go against my entire background. I would like to deeply thank you for this series since I actually watch this more than your techie stuff (promise will watch it once I'm done with basics of C++ and DSA). I never realize how much I need this before actually setting down and watching it since I simply don't understand my own feelings.
my man. sorry to hear about the dad
its hard
You are motivation for many. Thanks for sharing that. You have no idea of the impact of what you do on people's lives.
that is cool to hear :)
Dang bro, right in the feels ❤️ get after it 💪
a lot of feels in there
@@ThePrimeagen you the man… man 🫡
I needed to watch this video this morning. Thanks you for putting yourself out there and being vulnerable.
Dude, this hit me harder than I thought it would...
Your "I cant let how I feel dictate what I should be doing" is my new motivational mantra.
Thank you.
Hot take: the most important skill in tech is being unmotivated and yet be able to stay rational and make progress.
Definitely agree, it's all about habits
As a longtime psychotherapist (turning into a software dev), I can't tell you how many young college students would come to therapy and want to "find their motivation" again. This rings so true. It was such a shock to the system to have to do stuff that wasn't on the top of their list of things to do when there were so many other fun things to do. I love it. I always said, "Motivation is not something that you find and keep. It's something that keeps you doing things. When you start something hard, you have to realize it's gonna feel uncomfortable and difficult. Fight the feeling to do nothing!!!
Thanks for this video. I kind of needed that.
- "pursue making how you fell align with reality as oppose to letting reality align on how you feel"
- "I can't let how I feel dictate what I should be doing"
the good fight right there.
Never saw a content creator deliver such passionate energy as you do Prime! Always get absolutely hyped when I watch these hot takes. Also appreciate not cutting out the emotional part! We're all humans, let's gooooooo! Legend!
I'm in the same boat as you. Growing without a father is not an easy task, or rather a very difficult one. But it is doable.
And that warm feeling of achievement is highly intensified, because of all the trials and errors you had to go through to get there.
Appreciate you not cutting out that emotional part at the end of the video. Keep doing what you're doing.
yaya! thanks bud. we decided to keep it and happy about that.
" stop your fellings dictate your motivation " that hit me hard . thanks for the vid sir
As someone still working on building that real sense of maturity myself, and who doesn't have a strong father figure to have learned it from, it means a lot just hearing the reality of it from someone whos' gone somewhere and made something of themselves. Thank you man.
I love this video. Thanks for keeping the emotional part in. It let everything you said hit in a real way and showed that you actually care about what you're talking about. I really appreciate that.
I have a lot of issues with keeping motivated and it's nice to see others talk about it without it just being another video they need to crank out for the week.
Awesome videos man, don't stop them. I appreciate your personal takes and wisdom. Much appreciated. Best of wishes!
Thank you so much for taking your time to make these videos. As someone who is self taught, it's tough to know what's normal and what isn't. To me, goals aren't achieved by motivation, motivation is created when goals are reached. I have so many goals I want to achieve for myself. I'm often referred to as a machine in my company because I'm constantly studying and building in my free time. This isn't because I'm explicitly motivated to do these things, but because these goals are important to me. When I start to see some real progress, I start to feel motivation to do more.
I really do appreciate you making these videos for people like me who are newer to the tech world. There is a lot to learn and it makes it much easier to wade through the water with the advice you give.
you are welcome there Brad :)
"it's tough to know what's normal and what isn't" so relatable, especially if you are the only one with a specific job desc in the company.
Man, I need a mentor just for the sake of experience sharing.
@@Rey_R_ That's my current situation and I'm really hitting some burnout. A mentor would be perfect. I'm probably going to start a twitch channel and code live. That way I can have people tell me what I'm doing wrong.
Thank you!! You always bring these and they hot when I need them most. You’re always pushing out great content and you’ve help me rethink things and place and different, more mature, perspective on them. Thank you!
I also grew up without a dad. I got bullied all my life and never really got anywhere. I’ll be 30 in a few months and in the last 2 years I’ve learned so much about myself on my own from talking to other people, the one thing I was always so apprehensive about. I really appreciate you making this video. The end spoke to me as well the entire video but the ending really tied it all together and motivates me even more to pursue the knowledge I’m seeking. I’m a newer subscriber but I just wanna say thank you. You are a great man and I am glad I found you. ❤
This is the most valuable and down to earth advice video I have ever seen in youtube. Thank you for giving out this for free.
I was bingeing your channel and wasn't prepared for this video to shlapp that hard at the end. it got to me, as a coder and as a millennial going through therapy, massive respect my guy, and thank you.
Love you man. Can relate to dad stuff. Proud of you across the Internet and across the pond 😊
These are the talks that makes you connect with a youtuber. That's makes a follower to a passionate follower, since you gave something that is so valuable to them. Thank you.
Motivation comes so much more when you are in motion. How many times have you started something you didn't want to do at first and then thought it was not so bad? I also think it comes so much more when you are in a creator mindset (coding) rather than consumer mindset (reading news/social medias) and have a clear end in mind.
yayaya. such facts.
I agree, I often find concrete objectives/goals to be helpful! 👍👍👍 I also am concerned about over-consumption of passive content (I've quit social media outside of that one "professional network"...)
dude, you're killing it, thank you so much for making these videos!
Absolutely love the channel. Came for the blazingly fast comparisons and experiments, subbed for the human behind the camera. Appreciate all that you put out there, it's extremely appreciated.
Bro this really hits home for me. Ive been feeling like this, which is crazy because this is deft my best year in terms of career, but there is just SO MUCH work to do that i struggle making meaningful progress on my free time. I have two web app projects, a full time job as senior dev and im helping my wife start he makeup brand as well. So im on the computer 24/7 and there are some points where i know i should be working and mentally i feel good to work but there is this anxiety getting in the way because how much work there is to do, I consume a lot of work related content during these times but i struggle to get to coding. The fact that you feel this way or somewhat similar really helps me accept it as part of the lifestyle. I have to learn how to deal with it. It is a hard pill to swallow but starting is the only thing that makes the difference. I really appreciate the content you put out bro. If you ever need anything dont hesitate to ask
I can say that from my side the motivation is coming from people like you.
fighters and passionate people ramp up my motivation.
so I make sure to surround myself with inspiration and people I admire.
And I can tell you that I'm doing and refining this for the last 14 years, and it is working pretty well for me. 😄
Cheers to ThePrimeagen and to all of you!
thanks :) I really appreciate that nice comment.
I just found your channel and I am honestly blown away. I appreciate the transparency and realness that you give. I never thought I would find my passion. I felt like a “jack of all trade, master of none”. I started learning to code, and am finally really excited about something. I finally found my passion, but am also going through major life changes and trying not to sink into depression. I really needed this video. Thank you for pushing through how you felt, because this video really inspired me and gave confirmation that I needed.
Thanks for sharing this, completely agree. Also love the fact that you're one of the few videos that I don't have to increase the playback to at least 1.5 times for. :D Keep them coming.
Thank you so much for this.
You and your videos are the reason why i started learning Vim.
Your videos about how to be a better senior engineer has personally helped me a lot.
I can never thank you enough.
you are welcome bud :)
This is some straight fatherly wisdom! I really appreciate the transparency and honesty my man. By powering through to finish this video it shows how you’re walking the walk and giving the advice you wanted but didn’t get growing up. You’re being a dad to the next generation with this video. That is such a huge gift to men that are growing up like you did that find this video. Thank you for your encouragement and helping others learn what you learned the hard way.
Love you man. Your wisdom and honesty are appreciated. The take on not relying on motivation to make us move on our vision and goals never get old. Thanks for the reminder!
I grew up in a similar upbringing and seeing you tear up motivated me hard because you know what it is like and I know what it is like, you inspired me truly to make it happen and I deeply appreciate you from the bottom of my heart you are a real impact on the world at large your chaotic energy is so fun to absorb you are a true inspiration!
I love and respect the energy that you put out. Naturally getting the motivation is hard for me too and I find that showing up even when it's rough is what helps me be in a motivated state. I use the same for gym motivation as with my work. Especially for me as someone who has ADHD personality, There are so many distractions these days that will easily break any momentum requiring more motivation the next time, further depleting the resource pool of available motivation. So for me, I use the steps:
1) show up 2) close off any distractions 3) start with a easy win for warmup 4) go for the toughest thing that needs to be completed.
I usually don't comment, but man no words can describe how much this is meaningful to me. I always appreciate your energy and enthusiasm which why I always keep coming back to watching your videos.. and to see that you sometimes struggle with that just gives me so much hope and energy to dedicate more towards the goal that I am looking for.
! I am glad I could do that for you :)
Its true though, I don't always feel on fire constantly. I make my own fire.
I am so glad you shared your story. It's very inspiring how you managed to keep this positive attitude given what you have been through.
Very heartfelt and super helpful! I definitely have felt the change over time as I've continued in the industry. I still love it and have a ton of fun most days, but yeah, there are always going to be those days where you just wake up not ready to do your job. Glad to hear everyone, even you, have that. It definitely helps with any potential second thoughts.
Thanks, I needed to hear this right now. Even if my job should be fun right now, actually I did not feel so unmotivated for a long time. Your advice is simple, but when you have never thought about it like that, it is pretty profound.
well hears to some accomplishments in the future.
Amazing advice. I have been letting my mental barriers get in the way of what I know I really want, I needed this. Love how you can talk about everything from vim to this. Keep up the great work, been watching you for a long time and will continue to do so.
yayaya
same!
Thank you so much, You have been giving me so much hope in actually progressing in the tech industry, your vulnerability and showing how it really is is honestly just what I needed, Thank you and I really wish you keep going and teaching us your experience.
Prime, I appreciate you so much for doing this. You are truly an authentic person trying to help others and that is invaluable to me. Thank you
You’re the reason I fell in love with coding again, after couple years of hating it. I started using vim and rust and doing side projects thanks to your videos.
dang! Thanks bud for such a nice note. I really appreciate that :)
You know I love you Prime UwU. Y'all got this (Me included, hopefully).
Can totally relate with the not feeling motivated at all to do crap. I had the notion that the novel feeling I felt when I started off would be constant. The apathy set in within a year of being in engineering. Now I am making changes in my perspective so that I stay connected to what reality is because this crushing feeling in my case was caused by the hyperrealistic expectation of enjoyment from my work.
TLDR: (In my opinion) Do stuff, you'll feel great at best and meh at worst. But do stuff because you made this choice. You got this!
yayaya!
Man, your content and energy really motivates me. And all that you said I can relate, we are not told do get motivation inside of ourselves, but thinking a light will come up on our heads. I really appreciate your way of being real, sharing personal deep and funny situations, that's real life. That may sound cliché, but you are one of the few people I just click right away to watch the videos ~blazingly fast~
Much love and admiration from a Brazilian fan!
I can feel every single word. Thank you for sharing all that and this is actually more motivating than 99% of “motivational videos” out there❤
This so true, I have had the exact experience of getting motivated after starting to do what I really wanted to do for so long but just didn't feel like. I could be still waiting to somehow get motivated if I never gave myself a force to start it.
gotta force it. it works SOOOO often.
I needed this, thank you Prime!
you are welcome my man
Hey, thanks for sharing a little bit of how you feel sometimes and a little bit of your story. I also grown up without a dad but I had my mon and my grandma which gave me a solid base to do whatever I wanted. I didn't get to college but I'm a self-taught software engineer and my learning resources are people like you (specially you). I'm pretty happy with all the things I know and the things I have today. Thank you so much for doing what you do, you really deserves everything good you have in your life. Keep doing the awesome work you do, you're my hero!
Thank you for being so open and vulnerable, it is an inspiration
okey i opened youtube, feeling bad...
top recommentation was this video
now i am 🙃 going back to study for next weeks exam.... thanks for your grate motivation
yaya!
spot on advices prime, i've been feeling axiety sometimes in the last months by doing work on a project that is always on a brink of a disaster with deadlines
but i'm just pushing through anyway and greasing myself with coconut oil to stay motivated
careful. them extrinsic ones can be very hurtful. I hope that you get through all the deadlines and shit. Those are rough.
@@ThePrimeagen yeah one thing that always helped me, is doing exercises almost everyday after working and getting good nights of sleep.
That helps alot and play a great role on staying motivated
Thank you for being real, and for humbling yourself and letting us know you struggle exactly the same way we do, and thank you for telling us what you do to try to overcome it. I have massive imposter syndrome, I feel like everyone around me delivers so much and I deliver so little, it’s nice to be reminded of the reality that you just have to sit down and do what you don’t want to do and hope that at some point your head and your heart connect. You taught that lesson, and you taught it from a place of compassion whilst most other people would get tired of people whining about motivation and lash out calling them lazy. Instead you met us where we are, and with compassion gave us the advice you’d give yourself, that’s fucking based.
This got real very quickly, wasn’t expecting the emotion - love the honesty and the wisdom! 😊
Ok, Prime. This one was a hard-hit.
It makes me happy to know that you're doing well and I wish you the best.
If I was your dad, dude, I'll be so happy to have such an awesome personality as my son!
Thank you.
ty man :) what a nice comment.
Had to write an exam about java this semester, failed hard because i couldn't get any motivation learning this language. I've started reading books about rust and go, but that uni forces me to learn java really kills alot of motivation :(
yeah. this is truly where maturity needs to play a key role. You have to set aside how you feel and just push through for the sake of winning. I totally get not working in a language you love. I work in c++ all the time and I absolutely hate that language.
Never commented on your videos but this video deserves it. Going through tough times at the moment and motivation is really hard to find. That's a self-destructive loop, the less you accomplish the less you are motivated. I have to start breaking that loop even though I feel like shit that can't do anything. Thank you for this video.
Thanks for posting this video. Your courage and vulnerability will definitely help others. Helped me for sure
Waiting for the new “bun” runtime hot take -
BLAZINGLY FAST 🔥
i heard these things. i 'll probably do something with it shortly.
wow, man this is the best one ever! I never expected the last bit to be emotional and I decided to comment even before I watched that bit anyway. And I wish there was a plus button on the damn thumbs-up button! I'm going to watch this one over and over, it's gold, sorry my English is not strong enough to give you the best appreciation. I'm not sure even you can beat this video, and that's a compliment. respect prime! respect! 🙏
yayaya! Thanks bud. I recognize you from practically every video I have ever released. Thanks for always commenting and engaging :)
100% man, this is great advice! Love the content, the raw hot takes, and delivery, don’t stop being you :-)
As a developer of 15 yrs, in IT for 20, I know this advice will help many in tech survive. Heck, great advice in general in any field.
Thanks for what you do sir.
I just wanted to tell you that I love you and your content. I can tell that your words are coming from your heart, and genuine will to help others. I've been struggling with motivation lately too, and your word hit me home hard. I always thought that motivation needs to come naturally, but you made me realize that it's okay to start your day shitty, and you can still feel good and productive afterwards.
This hits me right in the feels. I have the same issue growing up without a father to now teaching my almost teenage daughter lessons. Soon, It will be my son.
hah, only an 8 yo son right now (oldest). Haven't quite got to the advice years.
How do you maintain that gorgeous mustache as a Software Engineer?
he commits small and often
shaving... properly
I enjoy watching because you are informative and authentic…keep going!
You're a true inspirator and a motivator. Thanks to you, Prime, I pushed through with learning VIM, I pushed through and committed myself to learning Workman to replace qwerty. I push myself every day to learn something new, improve and become a better engineer. You are one of the biggest inspirations for me, and I am truly grateful that you find the time and motivation to push these videos out, even when there's a lack of motivation.
Dude you are so amazing. I love your videos and your passion and energy. The thing about excelling in anything you do is just doing it even when no part of you wants to do any of it. Thanks for being such an awesome person man. Thank you.
I love how genuine you are, you really bare yourself to your audience. I would love to meet you someday! You seem like a totally amazing guy to have in one's life! Your kids are very lucky, as is your audience (me included)! In regards to your video about carefully choosing your mentors; you are definitely a VERY good mentor if you ask me.
Also, I'm glad you don't shy away from giving your "hot takes". Sometimes people don't think they want to hear the hard truths, but once the truth is spoken, that's when the seeds of inspiration, hope, and direction can be planted.
Thank you Primeagen!!
I love this from the hearth approach. I need this more than the technical docs. Please keep doing this.
From all the tech videos I’ve seen, this is the best most truthful one!
Thank you for sharing!
Well this ending where you almost cried really got me, and it's amazing that you keep that in because I would have just cut it off. Kinda shows how you are truly open to your audience and trusts us to be like that
So I'm just here to add in that this trust goes both ways. Thanks man ♥️
hey man, i just want to say i really enjoy your videos in general, they are super informative and just flat out enjoyable. Thanks you for your advices, as a junior dev and young person in general it's nice to have a source from a person who's been there, done that. I hope you keep enjoying doing videos and i'm glad you found your own place in life after having to grow up on your own. love : )
Prime, you're the freaking greatest! Your content is helpful AF (and entertaining too). Thanks for sharing
Great inspiration in this video. I take no pleasure in seeing how emotional that last part made you, but It’s somewhat comforting to know that even the great ones struggle with motivation sometimes. It would be easy for us watching to think you’re always “On” 100% of the time given how proficient you are in your steams. The great thing about that struggle that you shared, having to learn it on your own, is that you get bestow that on your children and make great resilient little humans :)
was gonna comment "Aww you're the greatest" but I don't feel it really does you justice. I just wanna say I think we are really lucky to have such a positive and healthy person to look up to
Man I feel you and I also I felt so emotional coz I also lost my dad when I was a kid and its so hard for me growing up and I also struggled till i became a Software Developer. I always go through your videos and today i'm SUBSCRIBING to your channel. Thank you sir for being real and honest in all your videos especially the one on Netflix where you left because you didn't want to listen . I have noticed a lot of Software Developers are so egotistical and cocky so I try to stay in my lane. Keep up the good work
True wisdom in less than six minutes! Thank you very much Sir, I appreciate it. I'm now a fan and a new subscriber! ❤
Thank you so much for your honesty really opened up my eyes to a new perspective on how to move forward with my passions. I can relate to a lot of things more so that I like to admit, but I understand that you went through a lot to get there at your advice. My brother is in so many ways.
Absolute amazing video. I will definitely rewatch when times are tough :') Much love Prime, keep at it.
You're a big inspiration man, for real. Thanks for sharing with us, without going on a rant what you said about aligning how we feel with reality is the answer to a question I've had for like my entire life. I said it in another comment but I'm really glad I came across your channel.
Hey Prime, just wanted to say love your content and really appreciate the effort you put into your videos. Your videos have been an inspiration and have often motivated me to get out my slumber and get to work. So thank you!
When you said, "I wish I had someone telling me these things when I was younger". You are making such an impact in so so so many people's lives, thank you for all you do! I honestly have felt it for so many months on UA-cam and Twitch, with 0 to 1 viewers when I would wake up at 6:30 AM in the morning to stream outside working hours, but the motivation that someone will watch the recording, and learn something new, keeps me going. Even the fact that I get to learn and challenge myself every day for the things that I absolutely love doing, is enough for a reason to work in that direction. :) Thank you again!
I love you bro ❤️ you are one of the people makes me motivated. when I watch your videos, all the cool stuff you say and you know. That's just great 🙂
Thanks for these kind of vids. I usually get too focused on how I feel and its just so hard to get started into doing something when not in the mood... the contrast hits hard knowing how productive and great one was when motivated or passionate while doing something cool. As a young aspiring engineer it just feels so hard working on my thesis and having that goal in mind, or finishing that feature your app really needs in time, but as you said that maturity is something you just have to forget in the moment and get to it.
I kinda needed someone to tell this to me.
The more I watch your videos, the more I love you. You feel so down to earth, humble. More developers should be like you!
You are truly the man. Thank you for all of your videos, appreciate it a lot
Thanks for sharing your experience and advice! I’ve been feeling unmotivated, and I didn’t know what to do.
This video is what I needed! 🙌
Super insightful, insanely entertaining, and incredibly genuine. You’re doing the tech world a favor with every bit of content you create. Don’t stop ever! Thanks ThePrimeagen 🤝
SUCH a great video. I had a crazy mix of feelings between smiles and "almost" crying watching that, tks man from Brazil.
Thank you for that video and also for being so honest. Keep up the great work!
You're great man, the tears on face of a men that's gold, wish you all the best, i still have not even fully understand my garbage vimrc but i will keep on doing it, thank you.
One of the best advice I have ever heard. Thank you Prime. Really appreciate it.
