brilliant video. The side by side comparisons are extremely helpful. I haven't fully embraced contrast paints yet so this gives me a better idea of which ones I might need.
This was really helpful. It makes the new contrast range make more sense to me. I see that it’s not just brighter colors but also better coverage. Thank you!
I'm impressed with the opaque contrasts, it might change the game for yellow and orange. Black Legion and Baal Red will be staples in all paint collections. Good video Pete, well done.
Great review. Thank you ! I just wish you would also make a photo of all of them (collage - one next to another or just 1 by 1) - It would serve as great help for a future when selecting the the colors for a project.
Baal Red, Magmadroth flame, and Bad Moon yellow look like interesting tools. They don´t provide the instant shading as other contrasts but have enough shading to let you imagine easily where you can apply further shadows and highlights, more than with a base paint. Probably an instant staple in any paint set for people who like to apply their own contrast.
Never tried a contrast paint before, but those icy blues looks interesting. I've been trying to make some sort of frozen earth bases, and that might help.
Of all the reviews I've watched from many of my normal subs, yours is the nest example of these new colours and gives me great hope for the range. Nice job. I realised that while I have been watching your videos a lot I hadn't subbed, so now I am!
Wish the Kroxigor came out sooner, it might have worked for my Alpha legion model, but I would need to see how it looks over a metal base. I really like the black too.
I have been using Akhelian green for ages and it looks great. Alternatively, if you have it, Tamiya clear blue over a metallic base gives a great look.
@@tombrand236 lol my poor alphas have gone through some rough times with their color scheme... it started with that shade technique that needed 7 to 8 layers of shade... I had quite literally just finished all my terminators when contrast came out and I saw I could get a similar effect with one layer of contrast. So long story short, my current army has a mishmash of models painted with regular paint, layered shade, contrast paints and color change paints all mixed together... mostly because they all look good, I can't decide what I like more and I figure the alpha legion is about confusion so if I am confused about the color scheme of my own army, my opponents must be dumbfounded. Lol
Hey! every model doesn’t need to be the same! Some could be older more seasoned veterans or Space Marines that fell later on, variance can look really good honestly, it’s how my Drukhari worked out lol
Of the various 'got the early access' reviews, this is probably the most detailed I've seen in terms of "here's what this colour would work well for" and the comparison to the existing contrast range. Given the closeness of karandras and striking scorpion to warp lightning (also others, but really obvious in the greens), I suspect that part of the longer term plan will be to market groups of contrast paints as 'triads' (which Reaper has been doing for years and Army Painter started doing with their Air range)
Thank you for this review. I can definitely see a bunch of new colours to add to my collection. A lot of the new greens look amazing. Thanks for sharing!
Fantastic review, especially the comparisons to the older contrast paints! It would be interesting to see how they look over wraithbone or grey seer...
I ended up moving Badmoons yellow and baal red. Being able to lay basecoats down so liquify with such coverage is a dream. I play evil sunz so i needs lots of reds and yellows
really thorough guide. saved me a lot of cash, i was going to buy a bunch of these but now i know which ones i need and which to avoid. earned my sub. cherrs
Perfect video! You are a legend Pete! This is exactly what we need. I don't wanna buy all the new contrast paints but thanks to your video I have now spotted a few paints that would be absolutely perfect for some upcoming projects. Cheers!
Great review, very comprehensive. I appreciate the extra work required but it would be fantastic to see these new colours over Greyseer or Dawnstone base coat as those would give us a reference to something we're more familiar with. It would also give an indication as to how the saturation is affected by a non-white base coat
I wasn’t going to buy any of these before I saw this video as i have most of the old ones but going to have to pick up a few of these now…thank you for the video review!
Im really happy about the new purples. I remember getting a bottle of shyish and was taken back by how much burgundy there was to it. Leviathan is much more what I was hoping for.
A couple of those look less "contrasty" and more just like regular paints! Do they flow like contrast paints still? I use two coats of Black Templar for stuff like marines' joints, Legion stormtrooper bodygloves, etc. and it comes out looking a lot like the Black Legion demo here, if it flows similarly I think I'll be making the switch as soon as possible!
Its fun to hear you say you dont like white primers. I used to only prime black, but when i tried white primer for Speed paints/Contrast paints. I painted on it normally with paint as i would with a black primer, just to try it out. and i LOVE white primer way more now that black. Sure its harder to cover everything since the white shrine through. But damn, colours POP on white compared to black.
Definitely gonna be using Black Legion and Baal Red when I get around to painting up my Templars. I’m not very patient so being able to batch paint with these will be super nice.
This is a brilliant review Pete 👏. The side by side comparison to existing CPs is excellent. Thanks for your time and efforts matey. Very much appreciated sir 👌🖌️👍😊
Very helpful video. Thanks for it. I really like the new contrast paints. The fill all the gaps and the bright ones are so incredible. I really want start painting a contrast army :)
hi, nice, would you have pics of each bases so that it could be all on a page to have a sort of contrast galery and would be top if their was the 1st batch integrated so that we can take a look of renders simply before choosing how we paint on figs
I'm looking to use Mantis Warrior, Karandras or Striking Scorpions green for the trim and boltes on my Glooming Lords. I want a glowing radioactive feel, what would be the best way to achieve this? The models are based with leadbelcher and the armor is done with Black Templars black for a metallic effect (though in retrospect Stormhost Silver might have given a better result). Would I need to do a base layer of White/Wraithbone before using one of them (most likely Sriking Scropions)? Or do you think it would be bright enough to contrast the black while leaving the Leadbelcher for the metallic feel? Maybe I should do a base layer of Stormhost Silver first?
Great video, I have been really underwhelmed by this new range but you have given me some ideas on how to use some of the colours that don't behave like typical contrast paints.
Thank you for showcasing all of the new paints. I was waiting to see how Magmadroth Flame looked, as I plan to use it on the cloth parts of the Votann encounter suits, with the new grey shade over white on the armour panels. Looks exactly how what I want.
Thanks for the information on the new contrast paint!, definitely will pick up the new white scars spray can. Also the new contrast paint look edge look more finer as if they're edge highlight , definitely a new improvement

Very good video, thank you for that! Please also make a tutorial on how you painted the Poxwalker, it looked very ineteresting and I bet it was fun to paint. I also wonder how Yanden Yellow will look on top of the Imperial Fists Yellow, maybe this is the shade of Yellow I am looking for.
This is a great review, thank you very much for this insight. You mentioned these are the NEW contrast paints, do you happen to have a link to the Old contrast paints being reviewed in a similar fashion
That Alderei Emerald would be spot on for Sons of Horus. Age of Darkness is a thing.... It's not a coincidence. For you other old farts, it's like the 40k we remember with such rosy colored glasses.
Where can I get bases like this, I want to do a per paint sample that I can reference at my house and the details on these really help to highlight the different tones than a flat swatch.
This is definitely the best review and comparison of new and old contrast paints that I've seen. Would you happen to have (or be able to put together) a document or image that we could download to have as a reference when buying and using these?
Great review. Very excited for the reds, greens and the blues. Especially the the blues. I'm stocking up on Frostheart for sure. Thanks for the reviews Pete 🤘🐺 Side note the purples also look solid. Most of the range has me excited!
Thanks! I've been waiting for someone to cover these! Think that first blue would be good for Thousand Sons? I've been doing two coats of one of the old contacts.
friendly hobby tip for my fellow FOMO sufferers: Much as I am a defender of Citadel exactly for their selection and variety of hues, quite a few of these new tones can be found in other manufacturer's ranges as inks. Vallejo Game Color Smokey Ink (72.068) for example will give you pretty much the exact same result as Garaghak's Sewer, and AK Interactive carries inks that are comparable to Black Legion and Ratling Grime, for half the price.
This is the perfect review! I LOVE how you showed the old contrast paints next to the new ones. Super duper helpful thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Agree. Perfectly comparable and you get a great impression of the colours.

@Pete The Wargamer do you think it's a good contrast for painting Sylvaneth and Nighthaunts?

thank you for showing each new paint and ideas to paint my figurine. looking forward to buy some of them to test it out
I feel that those new contrast paints are less "contrasty" than the old ones btw I'd love you to do the same with the new washes
they seem more like inks
Yeah, exactly... Many of them don't pool and darken in cracks and crevices, so I don't understand why they're called contrast paints...
@@xtraspecialj because they have the same medium and work similarly but less lightly i'm guessing

Thank you. This is a perfect comparison and the time stamps make it easy to reference.
i like the colors but for most of these new paints, they don't do their "contrast" as originally intended, pretty much no shadows and highlights
Exactly. The yellows in particular apply completely flat. Although I guess you can't complain too much about an easier to paint yellow.
Yeah they feel more like speed paints or inks than a contrast
