Aye, paint on that yellow contrast, then if you want it to be an easier-to-fix paint, you can easily layer over a regular yellow paint

Duncan Rhodes has a pretty EZ yellow - Iyanden Yellow base followed by Yriel yellow to even out the panels. He uses Phalanx Yellow and Ushabti Bone for highlights. I plan on trying this on some 30k models where I'll probably dry brush the highlights.

As difficult as yellow can be, I've always found it a lot easier to just build out the basics in a matte white, with warm (think red or scarlet) shadows, and just glazing over it with a yellow ink. Works great for me...

That Pylar Glacier seems like it might be interesting to use as an undercoat, to establish cooler, darker shadows than some of the stronger staining colors might allow, on their own, if you, for some reason, don't want to deal with zenithal priming, or building a grisaille, before closing up with contrast colors...

I recently transitioned from using contrast paints to using oil and enamel based paints for the same purpose. Its a LOT cheaper, can be mixed in just the right way and the results blow regular contrast paint out of the water. Granted its more skill intensive and requires experience as well as some effort as it requires extra steps like intermediate clearcoats and using different solvents but has many advantages other than just better results abd more control over the paint. The fact that its 100% reversible and can be modified days or weeks after application is a bonus that cant be overstated. On top of that you can get a full set of oil paints, solvent and extra brushes for around the same price as 5-6 pots of gw contrast and the fact that this is enough to last you entire decades of mini painting was the fact that made the extra effort required worth it in my mind.

I usually go with yellow ink if I'm trying to get that result but obviously not having to add any shading after the basecoat stage before applying ink is a nice time saver so I may check these out in the future. also I've never flown to England specifically for a power point presentation...but I have flown from my home in England to visit my cousin in America, and he litterally locked me in a room and made me listen to Tony Robbins self help tapes all day...and make notes... that was my take away from L.A lol

    • @Pembolog

Bingo, this goes against what the contrast range was supposed be. It was supposed to be a way for any painter, of any skill, to slap on some paint to a bunch of models and get them table top ready. Ninjon spending over /two hours/ on a single model using Contrast paints is anathema to the idea. Not than I'm blaming Jon, because he's been told by Citadel/GW to sell these paints this way.
A proper review would have been spending that 2.5 hours painting a full BOX of Marines and getting a good result.
Problem is, I have literally zero issues with Citadel creating new tools for any painter out there, but contrast was sold as a one stop product for people who didn't have the time/ability/interest in meticulously painting a full army. They could buy a box set, get a handful of paints, throw them on at ANY ability and get a good finished product. It's not gonna win Golden Daemons but it was a finished result and looks infinitely better than a grey army on the table top.

    • @philipbowles5397
      @philipbowles5397 2 роки тому +9

@@Pembolog What contrast was marketed as and how it's intended to be used have never been quite the same thing. Contrast is basically a more strongly pigmented wash in my experience, and even GW's own videos never literally stop at applying a layer of contrast and calling it a day - even for battle ready models there is always at least a highlight step. Used 'as marketed' the less transparent contrast paints combine a layer and a shade, but they're never going to remove the need for highlighting and if - as Jon does here - you want specific recess shading in a different tone you'll need that too. The model he produced here wasn't amazing, but it also wasn't 'first time painter' quality and was probably slightly better than what GW markets as 'battle ready' - you can get decent results with a bit less than this.
It also varies how effective it is by model, and despite GW's obsession with using Space Marines to market everything Marines aren't the best models to show off contrast paints - while they do have nice clean recesses they have too many large expanses of armour that need a smooth coat, and getting a smooth coat with anything is going to take time. Likely part of the reason for the emphasis on greens, browns and flesh tones in the first range is that organic-looking models are much more suitable for contrast - skin and wood are great for it.

@@philipbowles5397 so much this. Jon isn’t trying to get a 15 minute whole marine result here. He likely spent more time than that just on the chipping effect. His example is something a lot closer to a box art marine because he’s a talented painter painting the way he paints. I don’t think he’s ever really applied contrast in the speediest manner the medium handles well, and that’s in a really thick coat. See Juan Hidalgo’s video on how that works. Jon’s honestly a little too afraid of a mistake to go that heavy - it’s not really that big of a deal to fix a mistake. His buddy Vince makes a few mistakes on purpose in his contrast video and fixes them with little worry. It’s just paint. You can’t ruin anything.
There’s still no doubt you can slap this around on a light undershade and get a tabletop result on a single dude quickly. That’s just the nature of using an undershade (helps a lot of it is a value sketch) and any transparent media to let the undershade do a lot of the work. People aren’t taking into account how much work the bright white is doing in every one of these sneak peaks. You’ll see it later when not every video available is laying it on nothing but bright dead white.

When I saw the Garagaks sewer and the Burgundy I was blown away, was great when you also mentioned them later in the vid!
I'm curious about the issue of reactivating the paint after. There has been a lot of issues with the army painter range for that, which kind of ties you into contrast paint only. Do these have the same issue?

I know I’m late to the party as far as contrast 2.0 hype is concerned, but in Pete the war gamer’s video he shows that pylar glacier is actually an amazing paint for creating ice effects. It should be under technical, or at least give an explanation on the label for what it’s used for, but that’s why it’s useful. Classic GW

My goodness! 27 new paints AND 7 shades. GW have actually outdone themselves on this one! I haven't really been using that many contrast paints to be honest but many of these look amazing! I love my shades so these will be great to try out. As always I'm sure I'll be referring to this video in the future for reference purposes.

Pylar Glacier feels like a contrast mixer that adds a little blue to whatever contrast can take it, or it just takes another color from a contrast and thins it with blue while trying to maintain consistent viscosity.

I’m glad you pointed out the difficulty with contrasts; That they are very difficult to cover mistakes on. Making them counter intuitively, more of a pain in the arse for n00b painters.

On one hand they are more annoying for us newbies in that respect. But 99% of the difficulty (for me at least) isn't in laying down the color within the lines. It's in knowing what colors to put where, and how to blend them, and how to highlight them, and where to highlight them, and what colors to pair them with etc etc etc. Contrasts do all of that for me. I am happy to spend some extra time making sure I make no mistakes laying the paint down. And if I make a mistake that's big enough, figuring out a way to make a chipped texture or scratches or something.

@@chlawl574 Right. Contrast needs more precision (or tolerance for error - will people really notice the problem when the mini is on a table a meter away from their eyes?), but less... artistry, I guess you could call it.

Great video as always, you say the paint isn't forgiving what if you had painted on the dark blue first so you could touch up any mistakes with primer then put down the yellow after? I know it isn't a perfect solution but it might make it a little easier to keep clean lines between the 2 colors.
