Well they are actually friends, they compete over a lot of things, mostly the Pearl, but when they're not, they're buddies, they must know each other quite well after all, been through some adventures together, and I think, when you are a pirate, you have to learn not to hold grudges over everything. :)

You can see it in the third movie as well, when they are walking around the corpse of the Kraken and having a heart to heart. I think they both realized that the only way to survive was to respect each other. Barbossa: The world used to be a bigger place, lad. Jack: (shakes head) The world's still the same, there's just less in it.
What Blackbeard did to the Pearl was unforgivable to both jack and barbossa. The latter dealt the fatal blow the former ensured that it would stay fatal
I imagine he tried, but with the kind of control Blackbeard had over his Sword, they probably wrapped right back around. Plus, it was likely squeezing it to the point of uselessness
This has got to be my favorite part in the entire movie. Barbossa's story -- how he lost his leg and his ship -- sends chills up and down my spine every time I hear it. The ghost sounds in the background, the expression in his voice and on his face, the look on Jack's own face as he puts things together...all that together, plus the story itself of course, makes for an intensity unrivaled by any other scene. And I love it.
I think what made the scene work so well, is the fact there was no flashback. All you could do was listen to the voice of the character, to emotions he spewed as he told it, and see the expressions on his face, like the terror in his eyes when said: "Our own ship turned against us!", and the determination when he said: "I'm the master of my fate, not Blackbeard. I'm the master of my fate, NOT Blackbeard. So I did what needed done! I survived."

What I admire about Barbossa is that he always stood as his own man, a true pirate, and a true captain all by himself apart from characters like Will and Elizabeth who seemed to constantly need Jack to save their asses at the end of the day. Even tho he betrayed Jack multiple times, Jack has a lot of mutual respect for him, enough so that he made him his first mate all those years ago. Even now, he knows Barbossa is fully capable & willing to get his revenge on his own but he’s still willing to help due to that mutual respect. Both these men are great characters.
Yes to all of that, but a true captain? He would go down with the ship if he was. I wouldn’t blame him for being hesitant, or if he managed to get everyone to safety first (at least I think that is the exception for captains). Barbossa cut off his own leg to escape the ropes, managed to escape and not bleed to death, join the british navy despite being a renowned pirate who had a massive hand in taking down Cutler Beckett, managed to lead an expedition to the fountain of youth in order to kill Blackbeard with one leg and a poisoned blade and proceeded to steal Blackbeard’s sword, crew and ship and use the vessel and magic that previously started this plot of revenge. What an actual legend

barbossa was introduced as a walking cursed skeleton pirate. He was a legit monster. The fact that he can spin a story that chilling even though the audience has seen him as a monster too is impressive.

I love how Barbossa has wronged Jack so many times yet they still chat here like old friends catching up. I guess when Jack shot and killed him in the first movie he let all his anger and vengeance go in that one bullet.
It's more of a friendly rivalry since he got even with Barbossa in the first film, and fir Barbossa he's had his own lease on life again after being brought back and while he did steal Jack's boat he was still rather cordial in his own way by not leaving him to die like the first time.
@@JTruong3rd Well, from what I remember of At World's End, Jack was one of the Pirate Lords who held one of the nine Pieces of Eight and as Barbossa said, he failed to pass it along to a successor before he died hence why he didn't leave Jack to die when he took the Pearl (again), but I do agree that Jack and Barbossa's relationship is more of a friendly rivalry than outright hatred of each other.
Fun fact : when Jack killed Salazar and killed him one of the crew looks exactly like barbossa but without the beard So jack and hector are first mate because jacks captain likes jack more than barbossa so the captain gave his compass to jack and made him the captain
I love that at 2:01 you can hear the 'Underwater March" song from the first movie (albeit an altered version that ive yet to find); a little callback to the pearl with barbossa's arc.
For me it’s there to signal that while he’s now seemingly weakened (one leg) and has spent two movies as an anti hero he’s still deep down the terrifying, ruthless and deadly pirate from the first movie and that when pushed such as by his desire for revenge that monstrous/villainous side can come back with a-vengeance.
Just shows how truthful and epic Barbossa was. Like seriously, taking one's leg just to survive is absolutely nuts! It also gave this character even more history and character!
Hector and Jack have this sort of relationship kind of similar to Goku and Vegeta, or Xavier and Magneto. They are rivals, and they do have different views in which counter act each other but they don't necessarily want to see the other dead.

It feels almost subtle how they put genuine fear in Barbossa’s face and eyes when he recounts the taking of the Pearl. If I didn’t know any better I’d think they wanted him to suffer from ptsd
1:18 Man Jack's face alone says so much He knows exactly what Barbossa has seen and knows all about Blackbeard's powers, but he can't even imagine how hard it would be for him and Barbossa to watch the Black Pearl turn against them.
Geoffrey Rush's acting in this scene is top notch. This man has been an undead skeleton, gone to hell and back twice, fought a sea battle in the heart of a maelstrom and committed countless merciless crimes as a pirate. And in all that time, nothing scared him like Blackbeard did.
"TAKEN not lost" I like how Barbosa emphasize on that because if the pearl was lost, he definitely would've gone down with her as stated by jack earlier in the film
The best part upon this whole sequence is the soundtrack behind the tale of how the pearl was lost. It's amazing that they made a sence of feel like as thought you were back in the first film
It's scenes like this that simultaneously make you understand why Jack made Barbosa his first mate all those years back........and yet, question that decision all the more! They are shown to share a certain kindred spirit, level-headedness and intelligence, and, under the right circumstances, work well together! But, at the same time, it's their similarities that work against them, and usually wind up driving a wedge between them. They're both proud, ambitious men, and in spite of their level heads, intelligence and abilities to solve and get out of the problems that plague them with relative ease......and that causes them to butt heads.......They both, in spite of their friendship, or at least, mutual respect, past or present, feel that need to outdo the other......the need to be on top, no matter the cost......Which, really, when you think about it, is the root of their problems.......

You know this scene would make a great flashback of what had transpired as the movie lacked a ship-to-ship battle this would be the perfect time to show it as a flashback while Hector narrates culminating in his escape from Blackbeard and his crew.
I think he cut of his leg due to the rope being "alive". So even if he did cut off the rope, it would still wrap around him and cut off the blood circulation to his leg... it's literally the same thing as having no limb if you have a cursed rope stuck on you for life... (until you meet Blackbeard again)

Hector and Edward were contrast and complements at the same time. They both had daughters, they both came back from the death, and they both controlled the power of Triton as well as command of the Queen Anne Revenge. That being said there was a major difference, while Edward would happily sacrifice his own daughter to the fountain for immortality...Hector sacrificed himself to save his own daughter, getting swallowed by the sea.
It's a great piece of chemistry. Granted, they've tried to kill each other multiple times before, (one of them even succeeded), but when a third party starts to take away their beloved ship, they always team up. Because no one takes away their Black Pearl.
"I am master of my fate" - true Captain, true mentallity. Also all that love-hate bromance between Hector and Jack, and honestly pegleg being coolest object in the series (not Heart, not Pearl, not Trident, not calices, but pegleg) really makes this scene stand out, and for me one of the best in the series, despite Stranger Tides being weakest of the films
1:25 "Our own ship turned against us." In truth that does actually make sense. Think of everything the Black Pearl has been through throughout the entirety of it's story: Being sunken then resurfaced by Davy Jones, becoming cursed because the pirates she was carrying were to greedy for their own good, having been broken and damaged by the kraken then dragged back into the depths by it because Jack tried to run from his debt with Jones, was stuck down in Davy Jones' locker for a while, came back then shortly after had to fight the Flying Dutchman in a typhoon, and then it was finally given a conscience by Black Beard and with the realization of everything that had happened to itself over the years she turned on her crew for everything those pirates had done to her.
"But I'd give my left arm for a chance at blackbeard". "Not your right?" "I need my good arm to drive my poisoned blade through his heart". Barbosa: ambitious but practical Not many people have that combo.
I love how he talks of the pearl as if it was a person you can clearly see that barbossa cared more about it. He even went head to head with black beard just to avenge it
God knows Barbossa's lucky 2 be alive, to survive that I tell Ya, That's 1 heck of Pirate right there ladies and gentlemen, if not the best, then most certainly one of the Best.
Goes to show that if these two were always trying to one-up, betray or kill each other, they’d be unstoppable. When they work together, they’re literally unbeatable.
That's the amazing thing about these two. With every little interaction, you can tell these two have had a long history as rivals that enjoy outwitting the other and getting under each other's skin. So from interactions like this where they start to bond, you know that it's been a very long, endless cycle for them and they know each other better than anybody else.
What i love about this scene is that it doesn't take away from Geoffrey Rush's performance at all. It allows Barbossa's story to play out in our own mind, imagining the terror the crew must have felt. A lesser filmmaker would have cut away to a flashback.
He sunk the ship that Barbossa and Jack fought over for 3 movies, presumably killed the Pearls crew, and put Barbossa in a situation where he was left with two options. 1.) Go down with the ship as a good captain would, or 2.) Take his leg and live to have revenge for his legs, his ship, and his crew. Like a good Pirate would. It's plenty personal.
So... Jack not only performs slight of hand, but he and Barbosa have a nice little heart to heart. Proof that they were, at least once upon a time, good friends. And then of course the eye-roll as Jack is climbing up the tree just seals it. XD
Captain Barbossa with his peg leg makes him even more like a real true pirate. Love how he has developed and his relationship with Captain Jack Sparrow.
He was fortunate to amputate his leg low enough (probably below the knee) to be able to use a peg. I have no left leg and do a "Long John Silver" using a single crutch which would severely limit my abilities on a pirate ship.

"I care not for King George, or tavern yarns that give hope for a healed limb." The utter conviction Geoffrey Rush put into that delivery is mesmerizing. Equal parts serpentine confidence and keen vitriol. The man fooled everyone, from Jack all the way up to the king, on his quest for revenge.
I’ve heard a lot of people ask, why didn’t Barbosa just cut the rope around his leg instead of his leg itself? My theory is that, the enchantment or black magic of Black Beards sword strengthened the the ropes so they couldn’t be cut.
It wasn't that noticable but the details of jack's cleverness and intelligence is really amazing.. Jack could actually untangle the rope on his hands easily and much earlier, but he doesn't buy with what barbossa's motive is. He knew barbossa could not be rule, not even the king of england, he wouldn't become a privateer without a reason. He also wants to know barbossa's motive as a counter or leverage against blackbeard.
2:09 That gave me goosebumps. I realized that even after the Aztec curse was removed, Barbossa would never be able to die due to his smarts. This is what made me think why this music always played during a scene with barbossa. PTS: Poor ragetti and pintel :(

barbossa was introduced as a walking cursed skeleton pirate. He was a legit monster. The fact that he can spin a story that chilling even though the audience has seen him as a monster too is impressive.

It's more of a friendly rivalry since he got even with Barbossa in the first film, and fir Barbossa he's had his own lease on life again after being brought back and while he did steal Jack's boat he was still rather cordial in his own way by not leaving him to die like the first time.
@@JTruong3rd Well, from what I remember of At World's End, Jack was one of the Pirate Lords who held one of the nine Pieces of Eight and as Barbossa said, he failed to pass it along to a successor before he died hence why he didn't leave Jack to die when he took the Pearl (again), but I do agree that Jack and Barbossa's relationship is more of a friendly rivalry than outright hatred of each other.
Fun fact : when Jack killed Salazar and killed him one of the crew looks exactly like barbossa but without the beard
So jack and hector are first mate because jacks captain likes jack more than barbossa so the captain gave his compass to jack and made him the captain

For me it’s there to signal that while he’s now seemingly weakened (one leg) and has spent two movies as an anti hero he’s still deep down the terrifying, ruthless and deadly pirate from the first movie and that when pushed such as by his desire for revenge that monstrous/villainous side can come back with a-vengeance.
It’s the one that plays at the the start of the first movie when they’re in the fog but a bit enhanced

Hector and Jack have this sort of relationship kind of similar to Goku and Vegeta, or Xavier and Magneto. They are rivals, and they do have different views in which counter act each other but they don't necessarily want to see the other dead.

It feels almost subtle how they put genuine fear in Barbossa’s face and eyes when he recounts the taking of the Pearl. If I didn’t know any better I’d think they wanted him to suffer from ptsd

This managed to become one of my favourite scenes. I mean just look at how worried Barbossa looks like in the end. They care about each other
Geoffrey Rush's acting in this scene is top notch. This man has been an undead skeleton, gone to hell and back twice, fought a sea battle in the heart of a maelstrom and committed countless merciless crimes as a pirate. And in all that time, nothing scared him like Blackbeard did.

I like how Barbosa emphasize on that because if the pearl was lost, he definitely would've gone down with her as stated by jack earlier in the film
What’s interesting is that this film shows a side of Barbossa and jacks rapport that was likely how they were when they first set out with the Pearl.
Damn I want Captain Barbossa telling pirate horror stories. I'm glad it didn't cut his tale by cutting into a scene of how the Pearl was taken.

The best part upon this whole sequence is the soundtrack behind the tale of how the pearl was lost. It's amazing that they made a sence of feel like as thought you were back in the first film
It's scenes like this that simultaneously make you understand why Jack made Barbosa his first mate all those years back........and yet, question that decision all the more! They are shown to share a certain kindred spirit, level-headedness and intelligence, and, under the right circumstances, work well together! But, at the same time, it's their similarities that work against them, and usually wind up driving a wedge between them. They're both proud, ambitious men, and in spite of their level heads, intelligence and abilities to solve and get out of the problems that plague them with relative ease......and that causes them to butt heads.......They both, in spite of their friendship, or at least, mutual respect, past or present, feel that need to outdo the other......the need to be on top, no matter the cost......Which, really, when you think about it, is the root of their problems.......

I like how they showed kind of support for each other.
It's that Captain/First Mate relationship still shining through after everything they've been through.
You know this scene would make a great flashback of what had transpired as the movie lacked a ship-to-ship battle this would be the perfect time to show it as a flashback while Hector narrates culminating in his escape from Blackbeard and his crew.

I think he cut of his leg due to the rope being "alive".
So even if he did cut off the rope, it would still wrap around him and cut off the blood circulation to his leg... it's literally the same thing as having no limb if you have a cursed rope stuck on you for life... (until you meet Blackbeard again)
But even then, what's to stop the rope from wrapping around his other limbs?
@@Blokewood3 Perhaps the rope couldn't tell the leg was no longer attached to his body. Whereas if the rope was cut, it'd realize that and wrap around him again.
@@Blokewood3 Because the rope doesnt have eyes and it will only react if black beard commands it too. From what I see blackbeard wasnt looking too barbossa thats why he had his chance to his leg only leaving the leg just be sure that rope still think its him.

After considering everything, I agree with this
Hector and Edward were contrast and complements at the same time. They both had daughters, they both came back from the death, and they both controlled the power of Triton as well as command of the Queen Anne Revenge. That being said there was a major difference, while Edward would happily sacrifice his own daughter to the fountain for immortality...Hector sacrificed himself to save his own daughter, getting swallowed by the sea.
It's a great piece of chemistry. Granted, they've tried to kill each other multiple times before, (one of them even succeeded), but when a third party starts to take away their beloved ship, they always team up. Because no one takes away their Black Pearl.
"I am master of my fate" - true Captain, true mentallity. Also all that love-hate bromance between Hector and Jack, and honestly pegleg being coolest object in the series (not Heart, not Pearl, not Trident, not calices, but pegleg) really makes this scene stand out, and for me one of the best in the series, despite Stranger Tides being weakest of the films
I personally think Dead Man Tells No Tales was the weakest, I thought stranger tides slapped. watched it the other day with my friend in fact.
1:25 "Our own ship turned against us." In truth that does actually make sense. Think of everything the Black Pearl has been through throughout the entirety of it's story: Being sunken then resurfaced by Davy Jones, becoming cursed because the pirates she was carrying were to greedy for their own good, having been broken and damaged by the kraken then dragged back into the depths by it because Jack tried to run from his debt with Jones, was stuck down in Davy Jones' locker for a while, came back then shortly after had to fight the Flying Dutchman in a typhoon, and then it was finally given a conscience by Black Beard and with the realization of everything that had happened to itself over the years she turned on her crew for everything those pirates had done to her.
If I was that ship, I'd be ticked too! Of course, being controlled by Blackbeard to being shrunk to fit into a bottle is no picnic, either!
Damn.... I never thought of that, you'd make a great story out if that mate!

Goes to show that if these two were always trying to one-up, betray or kill each other, they’d be unstoppable. When they work together, they’re literally unbeatable.
That's the amazing thing about these two. With every little interaction, you can tell these two have had a long history as rivals that enjoy outwitting the other and getting under each other's skin. So from interactions like this where they start to bond, you know that it's been a very long, endless cycle for them and they know each other better than anybody else.
Barbossa is definitely Geoffrey Rush's most famous role.
What i love about this scene is that it doesn't take away from Geoffrey Rush's performance at all. It allows Barbossa's story to play out in our own mind, imagining the terror the crew must have felt. A lesser filmmaker would have cut away to a flashback.
If you're gonna do a scene that involves "tell, don't show", having an actor as entertaining to watch as Geoffrey Rush is a good way to do it.
These two make Pirates of the Caribbean come alive in so many ways.
He sunk the ship that Barbossa and Jack fought over for 3 movies, presumably killed the Pearls crew, and put Barbossa in a situation where he was left with two options. 1.) Go down with the ship as a good captain would, or 2.) Take his leg and live to have revenge for his legs, his ship, and his crew. Like a good Pirate would. It's plenty personal.
So... Jack not only performs slight of hand, but he and Barbosa have a nice little heart to heart. Proof that they were, at least once upon a time, good friends. And then of course the eye-roll as Jack is climbing up the tree just seals it. XD
I love how when Hecter is telling the story you hear canon fires and and sword clashing sounds. Makes it wayy more dramatic! XD
Captain Barbossa with his peg leg makes him even more like a real true pirate. Love how he has developed and his relationship with Captain Jack Sparrow.
He was fortunate to amputate his leg low enough (probably below the knee) to be able to use a peg. I have no left leg and do a "Long John Silver" using a single crutch which would severely limit my abilities on a pirate ship.

The utter conviction Geoffrey Rush put into that delivery is mesmerizing. Equal parts serpentine confidence and keen vitriol. The man fooled everyone, from Jack all the way up to the king, on his quest for revenge.
His facial expressions when talking about black beard are so good, u can see how he’s like fantasizing about it
I’ve heard a lot of people ask, why didn’t Barbosa just cut the rope around his leg instead of his leg itself? My theory is that, the enchantment or black magic of Black Beards sword strengthened the the ropes so they couldn’t be cut.
It wasn't that noticable but the details of jack's cleverness and intelligence is really amazing.. Jack could actually untangle the rope on his hands easily and much earlier, but he doesn't buy with what barbossa's motive is. He knew barbossa could not be rule, not even the king of england, he wouldn't become a privateer without a reason. He also wants to know barbossa's motive as a counter or leverage against blackbeard.
Absolutely no way jack got anything out of that leg when his tied arms prevented him from tipping it enough

That gave me goosebumps. I realized that even after the Aztec curse was removed, Barbossa would never be able to die due to his smarts. This is what made me think why this music always played during a scene with barbossa.
