I just bought a Silent Brass...currently awaiting it`s arrival. Can`t wait. What an innovation for brass players! I started playing trumpet 40+ years ago - how technology has moved on, if only such a wonderful thing existed back then. Apparently you can obviously hear yourself practice, play along to a backing track, and even record it. Fantastic!!!...and all without anyone else hearing a thing.
I've been told they aren't that quiet and playing a trombone regularly with one will cause developmental issues that hamper playing without it. I heard this from several professional players.
I used to have one. It is great idea but the sound deteriorates if you use it too much (it might be just personal). Another thing is that the mute picks the sound inside the bell so you do not have as rich sound on your headphones as normal (limited resonance - no full bell involved). I decided to sell it as I've found it little disappointing, however it is great if you want to use it for some electric guitar effects or for emergency practise (hotel etc).
Imagine hooking this puppy up to a guitar distortion pedal which then connects to an amplifier. Or maybe other effect pedals like a wah pedal or a chorus pedal.
Thanks for the great review and recording! I think I'll get one now! I wanted to know if I could use it to record without disturbing roommates. Now I can actually practice again!
Sounds great and beautiful playing, Tony! :-) If I could play trumpet or any brass instrument at all, I'd want to get one of these so I could process the trumpet sound through my modular synth and guitar pedals etc. ;-) Seems like they should make, if they don't already, a "performer belt pack" that would have a standard XLR connector with balanced out to plug right into the house system, a mono/stereo monitor input with level and balance and a built in mic with amplifier with level and balance so you can hear everything going on around you and blend your own instrument to a level that works best.
If there is headphones output on the device, then you can just use it as a line output to connect it to your audio interface and monitor it via interface while recording. I'm pretty sure it was done exactly like that.
Jazz Do Re Free all you need is a male to male 3,5mm jack. Plug it your computer, plug it in the audio aux, (i believe theres two so you can listen while recording)
I wasn't expecting that result when he went direct and recorded a beautiful trumpet sound. I'm impressed! BTW, how does the mute feel as a practice mute? I have my Wallace Practice Mute which I really like, but being able to record it like in this video is something perfect to me!
How does it compare with the sshhmute side by side? Which is quieter? I have the sshhmute for my cornet and it's amazingly quiet but I'm thinking about buying this one for flugelhorn because of the headphone feature, which do you prefer? By the way I'm that apartment horn player who's trying to stay off the radar!
You say you 'hook this up to your studio'. How do you do that? All my attemptes to hook this up to a combined audio/mic jack of a laptop were ... not so successful. It was not recognized as a mic.
having the same trouble, just bought my silent brass and I haven't figured out how to record with that audio. 2 years from this comment and I've dug into forums upon forums on trying to figure out how
Just to let you know, you DO still need to run the pickup mute through the personal studio, then run the personal studio ("Phones" port) into your interface. The pickup mute has a condenser mic, meaning it requires phantom power to operate, and most phantom-powering interfaces, if not all, only do so via XLR for safety reasons.
This sounds great...However, I just would like to ask one question. I play in a small church and if I want to play softly, would this help with being able to do that without cost to sound quality? Thanks
Hi Toni, could you explain in more detail how you have this hooked up in your studio set up,as the sound I get from my silent brass, is certainly not the sound you are producing,be it though you are a far better player than myself..
hi I'm a beginner trumpet player. and have just bought the silent brass, because I'm a bit embarrassed to practise playing the very lite basic I can, in my small apartment. so far I'm just getting comfortable with the lower notes, like low c d e f and g. and without the silent brass I feel like they sound somewhat OK. but as soon I punt on the mute, the tones sound very of and flat an very "buzzingy". like on the C it just sound like I'm doing a bad farting sound. any tips for me ?? to make it sound like actual notes ??
Does it eat 9V batteries like the previous model? I must have spent $300 worth of energizer lithium 9V batteries in the past year alone. On the plus side, I found I've become a much better trumpet player rehearsing with the SB all the time. No pro will endorse this, but there's a little more resistance to the sound and harmonics between middle C and upper G are a tad harder to nail, making me more careful and conscious of my embouchure, especially when attacking notes (and with slurs as well). Best money I've spent on my trumpet in years.
I just bought one of these, is it normal that it blinks a red light three times before turning green?? I am using brand new batteries, i also noticed that the cable that goes into the mute isn't facing down 90 degrees mine is straight..
i dont think it should. its the same concept as normal trumpet mutes, and the protruding bell of a trumpet is only there to exude sound, not to affect air flow. thats just a guess tho
Yes. It will. Practice mutes usually affect that, and this one does as well. However, I have found it makes it easier to play without the mute, so do with it as you wish.
Hey Tony! I’m having trouble hooking my system up to my studio. My computers and iPad don’t seem to recognize or acknowledge that it’s plugged in. Is this normal for Silent Brass or do I have a defect? Thanks!
If you're talking about 2:58, which I think you are, that is called vibrato, there are plenty of tutorials on the internet that explain it in great detail. If you're talking about 2:56, those are just regular notes nothing special there
Woodwind I think the sound comes out of all of it. Look up a saxophone mute and you can find one that envelops the whole thing. I assume an oboe would be similar
I would recommend looking into an Electronic Wind Instrument! You can find them online, and if you have even a little knowledge of MIDI you can hook it up to all kinds of stuff
So,Can this system to remove the sound completely, leaving it only on my headphones.I really need to know this.Because i gotta practice in the room when the man is sleeping.Thank you.
It will not completely remove all sound. But it greatly reduces the amount of sound. If you watch the above video, he shows examples of how it sounds when playing on their tour bus and in a hotel room. It is very quiet, but there is still sound.
Hi! first of all excuse me for my english because it's not very good looking; what kind of mouthpiece are you using? where can I get one? like your playing! and thank you a lot! Best wishes from spain! hope your answer
The mouth piece he using is made from a brand named Kelly. They are a fine brand and I myself use one. It is a plastic based mouth piece but plays just as well as any other mouth piece in the market.
Hey, thanks for the informative video. Great stuff!! I'm hoping that you'll (please) take a second to answer this question. When you were playing along with the accompaniment and recording the output of the mute, how exactly did you have it wired in? The personal studio STX module doesn't have an output except for the headphone jack. So were you coming straight off the mute pickup into your audio interface--so bypassing the personal studio module and recording WITHOUT the Brass Resonance Modeling processing? Or were you coming off the STX headphone jack, or what exactly? Please, please take a second to let me know what you did, because the end result was great! Many thanks.
Too bad these silent brass mutes cost too much. I cannot afford one. Even a used one I cannot afford so I will just either not play or irritate the neighbors
But what about the back pressure???? What is really important about the "sound" that comes out of the ear buds .....as compared with playing a trumpet without a mute??? A professional needs to feel the horn WITHOUT any change in back pressure to be able to walk up on stage and "feel" the horn perform ..... NO DIFFERENTLY!!!! Why aren't you guys providing your feedback on this important FACT??? ......or are you just interested in getting your kickback from Yamaha?? ------- The question is a very simple one, "HOW CLOSE TO MUTELESS PRACTICING IS THIS PRODUCT"?
This thing got me excited to start playing again, and now I have been everyday for over three years. Love the Silent Brass!
Thanks for the full demo! Great to hear it didn't wake people up. Sounds beautiful on the sound system.

Sounds great Tony! I like the way your mouthpiece matches your mute.
Finally a decent review of the new silent brass. Nice.
His music is beautiful. He needs to record a cd for sure.
Thanks for the great intro and advice and demo of the newest Yamaha Silent Brass System!
I gotta get one, for sure. Christmas is coming - soon.
I've been told they aren't that quiet and playing a trombone regularly with one will cause developmental issues that hamper playing without it. I heard this from several professional players.

Ace Hearts or on an octaver or harmonizer
Outstanding video and... I mean,... that was a really sweet song there
Me has convencido , lo voy a comprar. Gracias.
I wish they made one like this for saxophone
This is what I thought before I watched the video. Pitty.
How do you hook it up to a computer?
what is the song you played at 2:39? i love that trumpet solo
same
w00borg it’s i cover the waterfront

Holy %^&* This basically just sealed the deal on me getting back into playing trumpet again.
Me too. I cant even practice cus you can hear my neighbors sneeze

When someone finally will do something similar for singers? Thanks for the review, it sounds beautiful!
Great video an explanation! thank you!
Hey, how do you conncect this to like a laptop and actually be able to record?
Hi, im Interesses into this too!
With the included amp, instead of plugging in the headphones. You would plug an aux cord
@@isaacarroyo03 so you can plug it in straight to your computer/other device without an audio interface?

is there some of these things for sax ?
