Leliță Săftiță - Romanian Song feat. Meena Cristiana

  • Arrangement by Farya Faraji, vocals by Meena Cristiana and Farya Faraji, clarinet by Ali Sehir. This is a song by Anton Pann, one of the most renowned figures of Romanian music. Born in the 1800's, Pann was a folklorist and musicologist, as well as a talented musician and composer himself, and many of his songs were known for their often lewd humour, such as this one.
I wanted to produce a historical rendition of Romanian music of the era, rather than one representative of current Romanian folk music. The folk music of Romania underwent a massive homogenisation in the previous century in the form of Muzică Populară, a highly commercialised form of Romanian music with a specific sonority and arrangement style, one to a large degree based on an extrapolation of the modern orchestral form which would not have been available to folk musicians in earlier era. It is the dominant form of Romanian folk music today, sometimes used to arrange Pann's music too.
Anton Pann, however, as a Wallachian composer, lived in an era when southern Romanian music had far more pronounced Balkanic influences. Reconstructionists like Trei Parale and the Anton Pann ensemble are good examples, giving us an insight into arrangement styles with greater use of percussions, instruments like the cobza, and an overall aesthetic leaning far more heavily towards a southern Balkanic and "oriental" feel I wanted to convey here, something that would have been more similar to Pann's own ears.
The arrangement is based on drums, now having disappeared from current Romanian folk, but once prevalent in Wallachian music, the țambal, violins, and a clarinet.
    Lyrics in Romanian:
    Leliţă Săftiţă!
    Auz,neiculiţă!
    Dar,dacă auzi,
    De ce nu răspunzi?
    Că e mult d'aseară
    De când şed pe-afară,
    Poarta-nconjurând
    Şi tot aşteptând.
    Vremea vremuieşte,
    Cămaşa-mi răceşte
    Luna s-a ascuns,
    Ploaia m-a ajuns.
    Streşioara-mi pică
    Jubeluşa-mi strică
    Nu mi-i de jubea
    Ca de fremenea.
    Că întâiaş' dată
    Azi e îmbrăcată
    Şi, de nu mă crezi
    Deschide s-o vezi!
    Du-te, du-te,neică
    Du-te de te culcă!
    Nu mai sta în drum,
    Că nu poci acum.
    Nu-ţi mai pierde somnul
    Că mi-a venit omul!
    Nu mă mai 'nlesnesc
    Nici ca să-ţi vorbesc,
    Du-te că e noapte,
    Să n-auză şoapte,
    Că e vai de noi,
    De noi amândoi.
    English translation:
    "Madam Săftiţa!"
    "I hear you, mister!"
"But if you can hear me
How come you don’t answer me?
    'Cause it’s been a while
Since last night when I’ve been waiting outside
    Walking around your door
    And waiting.
    Time goes by,
    My shirt gets colder,
    The moon has hidden away,
I am caught in the rain.
Under the projecting roof, water is dripping on me,
My long coat is getting wet,
I don’t care about my overcoat
As much as I care about my waistcoat.
'Cause this is the first time
    It’s been worn
And if you don’t believe me
Open the door to see for yourself."
    "Mister, go away, go away,
    Go to sleep,
Don’t stand in the middle of the road
    Cause I can’t right now.
    Don’t waste your time
Cause my husband has come home,
I can’t even pull myself together
    To talk to you.
Go away 'cause it’s night time,
    Should he hear voices
    Poor us,
    Both of us."

Romania might had some Iranian influences before the Ottoman conquests. The Iazyges and the Jassic peoples as well as the other Iranic tribes during the Early Middle Ages and Late Antiquity settled in the areas in Central and Eastern Europe. They later assimilated into the other ethnic groups such as the Magyars, Slavs and Thracians in the nearby areas.

Excellent vocals, as well as excellent instrumentals. Well done again, brother!
Greetings from a Bulgarian. One thing to also mention is that Anton Pann was born in Sliven, Bulgaria (Ottoman Empire at the time). His mother, Tomaida, was Greek and his father was Bulgarian - Pantaleon Petrov. Pann left Sliven at the age of 15 and settled in Chișinău, Bessarabia, when his family fled the Russo-Turkish war of 1806-1812.
In a way, Anton Pann not only represents Wallachia and Romania, but also Bulgaria, Greece and pretty much the entire Balkans.

It really depends on the region where the music is from. And also the time period, as this song has been composed in times when Romanian culture was influenced by the Ottomans. I think this song is from Wallachia (Southern Romania) and that definitely shows. The Moldavian music (Eastern) sounds more Russian or at least East Slavic and the Transylvanian one indeed sounds more Western/Central European.

Have you never listened to Rapsodia Română ? Search it, or Poema Română, op. 1. You will realize the diversity of music here. This piece is evidently an oriental tune, the Anton Pann Ensemble is specifically specialized in portraying the Orientalist elements of Romania. These songs are less so the general character and moreso an exception or component to music in Romania, but a valuable one. This piece has a hyper-specific origin, from an Balkanist composer of the 19th century, the same period which saw the pinnacle of Francophone influences in philosophy and art. To some extent, Anton Pann was an exception and a continuation of a particular trend that was seen as stemming from the Phanariot district of Constantinople. This Hellenic 18th to 19th century trend was combated by classical music, and operettas. Subsequently, these sonoric elements were syncretized into modern Muzica Populara, which is a commercialized form of Folk music.

Always fun to listen to older Romanian music for a klezmer (musician). A lot of the passages, themes, and riffs that are used in the more popular klezmer tunes, especially the horas (duH), are almost completely ripped from this folklore. The best example here is the descending phrase that is used to end the instrumental parts: the one that goes *dooh DeDeYyaDeeyyadaAa* Like a stomp of the wooden leading leg and then the stepwise squiggle of a tentacle for the second leg.
Sorry for not using music theory vocab but this is how this stuff gets taught: it's about the feel of the playing, and if we had to name every feeling present in the human head at any given time, we would run out the short, fitting, and practical ones that don't feel like melodies and be left with long ones that would begin to sound like feelings put to music anyway.
Your first son is a deceased relative, your second son is a stone, a lion or a gift of G-d, your third son is a newly deceased relative, and your fourth son is a combination of whichever number of the first three you confuse him with at the time.

Whenever I hear Klezmer music, I recognize the "Romanianess" of it as well. As a Romanian, I feel that Klezmer is probably the most similar kind of music to ours) and there is no surprise since we had 3 centuries of convivance with the jewish population...it is really tragic what happened to the Eastern European jewish population and that Romania took an active role in it too...

The singers are great but i wouldn't call this song "based" considering that it is about a women that can't sleep with his "boyfriend" because her husband is home.
Maybe that song about Mircea the Elder, maybe is "based" but not this one.

Your romanian is very good even if romanian language is quite hard to master, especially when you use very old words like you do here. I'm patiently waiting for a song from Transylvania too. Yeeeees, you listened to our requests, thank you so much! Wonderfully accurate pronunciation as always.
I have always regretted the loss of Romanian folk music when compared to our western counterpart (the Irish and Scots come to mind). I find the current instrumentation and lyrics usually found in the genre to be somewhat lacking, childish and tiring. I had not realised how much of this was due to the cultural impositions of the Soviet period since I was born after the fall of the Communist Regime. To this day I still manage find so many aspects of our culture which myself and many others were not aware of due to the influence of this period over the perception of our history.

Amazing work, Farya! It's great both musically and visually, and your pronunciation is wow!
You knocked those whispered i's out of the park. Beautiful î's as well. The last syllable in 'jubea' sounds great, and it would have been ideal to have the same for 'fremenea', but how you said it is perfectly acceptable in some regional variants. In the south (and in standard pronunciation) the 'ea' diphthong never sounds like the glide-vowel sequence /ja/- but in other regions of the country it does. All in all, amazing. Thank you!
